  • We're kicking off a series on modelling snow and ice. Last time we built the mini dioramas that I am using as test pieces (check the video out here). This week we're starting with a look at the Precision Ice and Snow snow base set. It's also branded Krycell if you are looking out for it.
    I've been blown away by the results you can get really quickly and in a variety of scales. This is the first product I've tested but I'm really impressed so far.

    I've been using this for almost 2 yrs now on all my winter scenes and it blows my mind that this product is so effective and yet no one knows about it. But here are some tips I've picked up while using it...
    1. Use the snow powder over an area that is very smooth (maybe a square piece of glass or the white, fold out project/diorama/presentation boards) bcuz this stuff seems finer than powdered sugar and you need a smooth surface to scoop up the powder and re-use it.
    2. The slightest breeze will knock this stuff loose bcuz it's so fine, so be sure to have still air when using it. (I use clear acrylic spray or loctite spray glue for adhesion like the TH-cam videos describe)
    2. A razor blade from a box cutter. Sounds a lil funny considering you're using a white powder... But the fine edge of the razor coupled with the super smooth surface you should be using it on will give you the best recollection of the material possible.
    4. A VERY soft bristled fan brush for cleaning off excess powder from your work.
    5. Finally, a small but thicker piece of paper folded into roughly a 5x5 square and, using the razor blade, scrape powder from your work surface onto that piece of paper to then dump back into your sieve.
    I was able to fit all the listed things above into the box that the product came in so it has everything I need all in one box. I know this is a long message but this product needs praise bcuz it's hands down the best show material on the market that I'm aware of.

      @@KathyMillatt Absolutely. I've been given a bunch of empty PC towers. I want to use them to build a vertical diorama display, for my classroom, with each tower containing a main diorama, and perhaps a smaller one in the CD-ROM bays. All of them to be junkbot in style, but rethinks of old nursery rhymes, Mother Goose, that kind of thing. The first one I'd like to make in a Christmas winter village theme, hence the desire to learn how to make a snowy diorama! The overall title of the diorama set will be Daddy Junkbot (instead of Mother Goose), and 'he' will be Father Christmas in this first diorama! This should be a lot of fun!

    Excellent result. Like it! And in snowy Russia, it is still customary to use improvised materials to create dioramas, since special materials cost a lot of money. For example, snow is often created by mixing PVA glue, soda, and white acrylic paint.

You can wet it again to make it look melted around edges etc but spray the vehicle with the lacquer first and use the powder only in the sieve and shake it over the effect is perfect! Don't paint it on! Use there TH-cam video for details on this it's easier than there instruction manual haha!

    Very nice. I used the Precision Ice and Snow kit on a small diorama. It was so much fun to do and it came out very good. It takes a LOT of experimentation to figure out how to get the look you want. As you pointed out, the glue you use totally changes how the snow looks. And yes, I had the same yellowing tint to at least one of the hairspray brands I tried. Others didn't seem to do that. I never did have good results with the adhesive they included. And you also pointed out, you have to constantly shake the ice and snow wash. Otherwise it's just clear liquid. The "snow" in it falls out of suspension really fast. Again, it was a lot of fun and the kit is really a bargain with how much/many diorama or model you can cover with it.

    • @KathyMillatt
      @KathyMillatt  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bruce, I totally agree with everything you’ve said.

    • @modelsncrawlers3209
      @modelsncrawlers3209 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The hairspray never worked well for me with this stuff. I think it's too good for hairspray! I've found AMAZING results using the acrylic gloss spray (AutoZone Rust-Oleum rattle cans) that it mentions in the tutorials tho. Or loctite spray glue fine mist worked good too. And of course scenic cement works too. I actually ordered my kit 2 yrs ago so mine didn't come with the adhesive they offer now but I don't think I'd use it anyway since I've become much more confident with the gloss spray or spray glue.

    • @KathyMillatt
      @KathyMillatt  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I found the tyre tracks worked best with a glue that stayed wet a little longer so the snow remained malleable for longer. Hairspray worked well for this and was recommended in their instructions so I didn’t try it with the other sprays. It’s good to know that other sprays can work too. It was fascinating to see what different results you could get from the same product.

    I would assume that if you are spraying the adhesive in a particular direction to match the prevailing wind or wind direction, you would also sift the snow in the same manner. Tilting the piece so the snow hits at the same angle as the adhesive. Although I did see you tilting it after I posted this. When you did it didnt look like very much was sifting to where you wanted it.

    • @KathyMillatt
      @KathyMillatt  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is hard to get the powder to apply sometimes but it only sticks where the glue is so you can move the diorama in all angles to get good snow coverage if needed then tap the excess off.

I have some of this stuff up in the loft that I was going to use for a winter layout (now on hold.. maybe in 2mm later) Anyway I think this stuff does look really good, However it's a little more difficult to shake off the excess if your layout is all fixed down! It can be done, but it depends on the size of the board or diorama, and forward planning. There are techniques for applying the snow as you want and fixing it afterwards after you are happy with the coverage. These watering in techniques can produce some of the most realistic results imaginable. See 'Fine Snow Effects' here.

    We were concerned that our sieves were releasing the snow powders too easily and too fast. They were 700mu, or .7mm aperture. We have now changed the design, width and mesh size completly. The mesh is now 500mu, or .5 mm aperture.
    The new sieves work with all of our snow powders and they give modellers the complete control they need over the dispersal of our snow powders.

      That's a good point. I wonder if something like a static grass applicator would be able to charge the snow particles and make them go in a particular direction? Thanks Kathy, I am just experimenting with these at the moment. How permanent is the hairspray finish? does it stand up to any knocks when dry or is it still quite loose powder? I have heard that a spray over with clear laquer at the end is recommended.

    • @KathyMillatt
      @KathyMillatt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hairspray is the least robust and I would generally not recommend it for items that are going to get knocked a lot. Cheat lacquer over the top would make it look icy but you could dust a fine layer of snow over and blow off the excess to get a more powdery look. If you want a more robust snow, I’d use a solid white base/paste then just use the lacquer and a light powder coat.

      Thank you. I experimented with a generous layer of air spray over the top and it seems to create a good top layer and fixes everything down. I even tried putting powder on dry and then sealing on top of it with spray which works well to. 🙂

    Nice product but seems it would be hard to use on a permanent layout since you can't flip it upside down to tap the excess off

    • @KathyMillatt
      @KathyMillatt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A hoover would work well if you have a dedicated one like I do. I build a lot of even my layout scenery on dioramas so it’s perfectly doable. I would have thought though, that if your layout is too big to turn upside down to tap, you wouldn’t necessarily be using this for the bulk of your snow. A layer of white DAS clay or another snow paste could cover a more expansive area first. They’re coming up.

    I don't tap it off if wanting it thicker I just leave it and spray the top of it with the hairspray to build it up in 3 goes! Then top fine layer! Waste of time for same results really ! More you play with it you get to know it but wouldn't payer by layer for starting your build up when top layer does it all after the depth is set to your likeness! Have you tried out AKs products for there snow and ice yet? Im away to try them through the week when they arrive they look great check out there TH-cam videos for this too!
