When hooving a layout, cover the nozzle with a ladies stocking! It still sucks up the grass/dirt but it keeps all the particles in the stocking which makes it easier to put back for reusing as well as not having to deep clean out the hoover as often. Not sure if it will work with the fine snow powder but its a life saver for grass and dirt!!!
I have my own little hoover for scenery but use tights over my big hoover nozzle if that’s what I have to hand. I’m not sure about the really fine snow powder either but I guess it would pick up most of it.
Happy New Year. Thanks for sharing this. I'm going to have to see if I can find the icicles and try them out on a diorama. Looks like a good challenge to master a new technique.
Very nice! Thanks for doing some of these reviews of new products or techniques.I had not heard of these materials yet, but they sure cry out for use in an armor diorama from the 1944-45 Ardennes or from Korea. Happy 2019 Kathy!
Again, thank you for doing all these experiments. Some of the Noch products are definitely interesting. Are you planning to do a final comparison with art supplies like acrylic gel, acrylic and spray paints? I would be really interested to see how these specialized products fare against the art products given all these are some way or the other variations of common art supplies.
Kathy, I would like to know where, I can get the Noch products? I would like to try some of your ideas for a diorama that, I have in mind. I just need to know where to find the Noch products. Please have a great day. Love to see your demonstrations.
Hi, Kathy. Really nice video and very well presented. I know it's not really proper to this video but do you know, or have you posted a previous video, on how to make your own pigment fixer? The commercial products are so expensive especially when I am building large dioramas (my latest WIP is over 1.5mts in length). Cheers, Pete
Pete, I usually just use isopropyl alcohol to fix but it depends how much you are going to handle the model. That’s not enough for model railway rolling stock.
Thank for the video, a bit late, but happy new year, i really hope you will have a demonstrate video using Tamiya snow paste, Noch, and Kycell product is not very available here in the east
Interesting! I‘m considering to do my layout in a winter setting, cause it would allow to build a European layout, but I could also run US engines from time to time and nobody would see the European track.
Good stuff. I think the paste is more for building up deep snow drifts than for putting snow cover on foliage. It’s meant to be put on thick and built up. For the past episodes over the recent months I’ve noticed the audio from your lav mic (I assume) is really muddy sounding like all the high end is clipped. Is the mic or transmitter gone bad?
It’s not showing as clipped on my audio tracks. Hmm. Not sure. It did knock the auto adjust on for a while which caused some headaches but it’s all sorted now.
@@KathyMillatt The straight to camera bits (assuming using the lav mic) all sound like it's being recorded at a way lower bit rate than the voice overs on the rest of the video (which sound good).
Interesting, I'm using a Zoom H1 and I don't think I can change the settings when I record although I do choose the speed when I plug it in as an extra mic to the Mac. It's the same mic so I'll ask Professor Google whether he knows the answer.
@@KathyMillatt As a test you could try playing back the recorded files directly on the Zoom and see if they sound good or not. If they're ok, then I would assume the problem lies somewhere in your video editing software, in how it's importing or converting those audio files.
Your channel is so useful. I've just binged all your snow vids. I'm getting back into miniatures after a long hiatus and I'm wanting to base some in such a way that they match a gaming mat I have on order. The snow on the artwork looks more powdery than anything. Would the Noch powdered snow pair well with some PVA to make it permanent? Subbed btw!
Thanks for the sub. The Noch powdery snow would be a great choice and PVA should work well with it. If you need more depth, experiment with hair spray to hold a second layer.
@@KathyMillatt I'll give it a go, cheers! I've been looking at a UK company called Precision Ice and Snow that seem to be a dedicated snow effects place. Ordered a bag of their Krycell fine powder for £8 so will have a test with that first.
Hi, I found this video really interesting as I am trying to choose a snow to base all my models with so thank you. I think the snow powder is by far the best effect for what I'm looking for, would a Pva spray glue be effective in your opinion? Thanks.
Hair Spray - please can you advise on what it says on the rear label? I ask as I was undecided looking at three types in Yorkshire Trading Company last week. 1) Firm Hold 2) Extra firm Hold 3) Quick spray. The thing that made me undecided was that, on the rear label, they all said “no sticky residue” - but isn’t that what we want?! I just wondered what “style” your T***o hairspray is, and if it’s a sticky one?!
I just buy whatever’s available in the highest sounding hold I can get. I’m not sure what the sticky residue is but I guess it means no tackiness afterwards and we do want it to dry properly well.
I LOVE those icecicles. Very nice.
So cool aren’t they!
I really like the Noch products, especially their winter line up
They have great variety don’t they.
Love your videos Kathy! Thanks so much for trying out all these products for us and giving us such great comparisons!
It was fun to do!
BBBRRRRR you made me feel cold with that snow and ice, so much for not being able to do it ,well done.
Thanks a lot!
Morning Kathy ,Happy New Years to you, Regards John

Kathy, thanks for all the great tutorials from 2018. I enjoyed all of them. Looking forward to all the great ones from this year. Happy New Year.
Thanks a lot Norman.
Thank you very much you did tell me where to start looking.
Snow and ice are so much fun to do.
Best wishes for the new year. I look forward to seeing and using the fruits of your investigations. Thanks.
It’s been fun! Thanks.
Good Morning Kathy, Wishing you a belated Happy New Year. Great tutorial! Kind Regards Johnny x
Thanks Johnny. Happy New Year to you too.
This has been a very interesting and informative series! Thanks for sharing these techniques.
Thanks John
Hello Kathy, Happy new Year from Germany. Thank you for this little Tutorial.
Thanks. Happy New Year.
So realistic and atmospheric, close ups on barbed wires are stunning, have to try this technique! Meanwhile, Happy New Year!
Glad you enjoyed it.
Very nice work as usual thanks for sharing
Thanks a lot.
Kathy Millatt you’re welcome 👍😃
Happy New Year Kathy!

I felt it was a challenge that I could win with a little practice!
Thanks for sharing I'm, looking forward to trying these products... Thanks again Kat!!! Signed, your buddy 'ol pal Mr Notorious B.I.L.L...
Good luck with them.
@@KathyMillatt thanks I can't wait to try them...
Hi Kathy Happy New Year, nice video may give it a try, you up for another model railway challenge this year All the Best Brian 🤗
Hi Brian, yes doing another GMRC this summer.
Happy New Years' Kathy." Ice work" love it, Cheers' John
Thanks John and Happy New Year to you too.

I tried some art supplies but didn’t really get much traction. I do use some ordinary products such as baking soda in later videos.

Without knowing which country you are in, it's hard to recommend. I generally buy mine from Amazon though. The links are below the video.
Wishing you a great 2019. I am enjoying your tutorial videos. Thank you 👍👍😎
Thanks a lot.
Nice
Thanks
What I'm missing from Noch that the Deluxe brand does have is 'shovelled snow'. I bet you can combine both makes though.

Tamiya snow paste is on the last video (up end of next month). The good news is that it looks good.
Interesting! I‘m considering to do my layout in a winter setting, cause it would allow to build a European layout, but I could also run US engines from time to time and nobody would see the European track.
That’s really clever!

I use PVA for most things and it would work well here. Shake off any excess snow and you will know the snow is properly glued.
Noch glue and noch punder works well Also?
Yes, I’ve used that combo.

Hi Kathy is there an age restriction on the great model railway challenge because I really want to take part.👌
Hi, you’ll need to check with the production company, knickerbocker glory. The details were after the shows.
How about gypsum powder or even salt?.
Either could work. Have an experiment and let us know!
can we remove the snow after installing the snow ?
If you don’t glue it down then you can but I’ve not tried it and I suspect you’ll need a hoover.
So what would you recommend? Noch or Krycell?
The one I’d use is in a later video I’m afraid!
@@KathyMillatt ok cool. I look forward to the next video. Thanks for the reply. Great video as always btw.
