  • This video series, hosted by Michael Gross, will teach you the simple how-to workshop techniques you need to know to take an HO scale electric train set and make it a scenic model railroad. Well show you how to build a 4x8 model train table (benchwork) from plywood, lay sections of track, create easy realistic scenery using foam and paint, assemble model buildings, and wire your layout with a DC power pack. When youre done, youll have a railroad that operates well and looks real. Our techniques would work in N, O, S, G, or Z scale also. This video is scene 7, Scenery part 1 how-to. Thanks for posting! It’s very clear and it will help me out a lot! Last time i had a layout i was 16, and now i’m turning 27, so i’m rusty to say the least. Having vids like these where i get a step by step guidance will save me so much money, time, and frustration, the ideas are all in my head, and thanks to content like this i get an idea on how to start with the practical bit. Can’t wait to get started myself

One can get usually obtain the Dow blue, extruded polystrene foam from wholesale and retail stores that also supply lumber. I saw a large selection of Dow extruded foam at a Home Depot Store.
If your timing is right you could get some of the blue foam left-over from building or rebuilding structures in your area.

I would use news papers , cardboard strips and masking tape for the mountains...Also i use durable paper towels soaked in woodland scenics plaster , it works just as good as rigid wrap. Just roll the newspapers in a ball and support them with masking tape and build it up. It will save you alot of money

@816hondarider I seen a article in "Modelrailroader" magazine they made a 4'x8' for $500. One thing you can do to save money make things like building out of trash (building/details/benchwork). Use meal dirt/sand/stone for scenery. Use toy cars like hotwheels for car (a little out of scale but they work) they are more cheap. I know many other ways I can PM you and tell you more.

Let's say I can afford to buy this stuff, but lack the space... HO and O scales are my favorite, and I wanna buy a lot tracks for a huge layout. Has anyone ever dug a huge hole in their backyard to build a basement or underground room for stuff like this? I'm thinking like 25-30 foot long and 15-20 wide...

Go for N Scale. You can build it to represent a Larger Area of Real Life.
N Scale (or more correctly N Guage) is 1:160; but take note that Models for N Scale are not always 1:160; even though they may be labelled as N Scale. Many are 1:150, or even 1:148; so be sure to choose one or the other in particular: Otherwise you'll end up with the same type of Structure in 2 different physical sizes (not counting 1:160). However, using 1:150 (the smaller one) AND 1:148 (the larger one) of, let's say 2 Houses, can have its benefits. If you want to make them seem further apart in a small space, such as one in the foregound and one at the foothills (your backdrop), you can use the 1:148 in the foreground, and the 1:150 in the background (or 1:150 and 1:160), to show perspective. Although, 1:160 Model Structures & Scenery Accessories are not easy to find. Also, some Plastic Models (such as Vehicles/Planes) that need to be assembled only come in Scales such as 1:100, 1:144, 1:200. In this case, you can, if necessary, in certain circumstances, use 1:144 with N Scale, but not advisable. If you do, try to use 1:148 in conjunction with it, rather than 1:150.

nice layout, however, i do prefer atlas code 100 , more realistic.
