- In this episode of 'Basic Skills Challenge', 50 people try to fillet a fish. Some don't even know what 'fillet' means. Some try not to vomit. Others go right for cutting off the head. One actually broke the cutting board. One person blamed the fish for their difficulties in fileting. Amongst the madness, Robert Ramsey, the Culinary Chef Instructor at the Institute of Culinary Education, demonstrates how to remove the bones from a fish.

Yeah, I've never wanted to learn to filet a fish, to be honest. The guy at my Asian supermarket where i get fresh fish has knife skills which I'll never match.
But i guess I'll learn how to do it, just in case of apocalypse.

@@taetm8868 To fillet a fish is not common knowledge. Many of the people in this video are your average american, not people who have been taught how to cook above-averge difficulty dishes. It would be reasonable to think that it's embarassing for a person studying culinary not to know how to fillet a fish, but if you are an average joe human, it would be understandable that you wouldn't know how to do it. So stop bragging, because it's pointless.

Dull knife is even more dangerous. It causes you to apply more force to make a cut. That when you can easily loose control of a knife and get cut.

Where I come from, we don't do all that and fish is a staple food. We just remove the guts and scales and then cook everything else. When eating, be careful of the bones. They're like little thorns and you could die if you swallow one.

If they're so tiny that you can't fillet the fish, the trick it to cook it until it either falls off the bone or the bones get cooked enough to eat.
I've swallowed a few salmon and bass and halibut bones in my life. I just eat more stuff and drink water and I'm fine.

Unless all of those people are vegetarians, the way they react to a whole fish is sad. People are so disconnected from where their food comes from.
In real life, looking up instructions for this kind of thing would be super easy. It only looks silly because they probably put these people on the spot without any direction.

Tbh, when compared to the other videos in this series, I don't think filleting a fish should be classified as a "basic skill".
They also have a video on how to prepare artichoke.. that isn’t a basic skill either...
Filleting a fish is a basic skill when preparing meat and seafood..... its one of the things i did a lot of in culinary school.
If you eat fish a lot it should be. At least if you’re trying to get the highest quality of fish

But its a skill you should know (i think that, of the basic meat processing techniques, filleting a fish and cutting chicken are the most important)....... unless you are way too much of a city person like those depicted here that freak out when you have to touch a whole fish to fillet it.
And btw, its (almost) always cheaper to buy whole fish than fillets whenever possible on a per lb basis.

Fillet means a cut of meat that has no bones, and is from the main body of the animal, like the rib or stomach area, but not the arm or leg area.
