Henry is simultaneously really intimidating and really sweet and vulnerable.
@@pacosinbag7755 You're only looking at the image he presents. Underneath, he's a very damaged, very vulnerable person. That's practically why he looks the way he does. It's a shield to protect him from the ghost of his dad and what his dad wanted him to become.
They're reading an awful lot into his inability to draw
The small details of characteristics of a person can speak for who they are. Even a childlike drawing to example it.
@@wolf42i40 First of all, the majority of people on this planet have no artistic inclination, so they have no idea what to do when they start to draw, because they never draw. To analyze someone based on that, i think is a bit much.
@@Abrahamhamham Its not too much, just not accurate because he cant draw for shit. Its a great tool for pyschologists though.
'Never go down on a woman whith shorter hair than you.'
I guess thats why he was bald for 20 years lol, genius.
Henry said it himself, he's not talented he's just hard working and determined. He is definitely entertaining.
"You see here, in his drawing, he drew the left hand slighty bigger than the right.. That suggests that he experiences pain while shitting and this pain sexually excites him in such a manor that makes him angery at his father"
There's a disarming truth and fearless honesty in this man... sadly for us, he's one of a kind
He’s honest but somewhat unwell. That’s helpful to some people, but I wouldn’t want to be like him. He lived something like his best life and matured recently though. He’s alright.
I love how even the person in his drawing has a giant neck.
I wish my neck was as wide as my head.
+logwind It's largely genetic, but squats/deads+bridges and neck harness work will get you there. I emailed with Rollins back when he had an AOL account, and he claimed to do no direct neck training.
You have never seen a neck until you've seen Cannibal Corpses, corpsegrinder
"I can't draw very well"
"Well, that means you are damaged, you felt small as you grew"
What the fuck?
+Gimpy2k7 I can draw well, so when they had me do the drawing even a sketch by me is pretty decent. The shrink did a bit of a double take watching me while I was drawing. It was strange.
Ok, when he said damaged, am I the only one who thought of the Black Flag album?

Am I the only one who feels a little better after watching this interview
it seems henry showed more intelligence than the psychiatrist
if you listen to him in his speeches or his comedy shows, he's very well spoken and seems far more intelligent than he tries to be. it's almost like he puts on an act of stupidity.
As a fan of Rollins persona and music in the 80's (Black Flag) and 90's (Rollin's Band) I am now a 44 year old that has been in a 12 Step based Emotional Recovery group, and am looking at him with fresh eyes. I now can see a very wounded man inside who was shown very little empathy, love, or physical connection.
In this and in other interviews Henry makes it clear that he had a hip but emotionally distant relationship with his mother through a shared love of music. I have a similar background as well, and while I still enjoy his desire to 'teach and reach' I do hope that someday he can find that emotionally lost 6-8 year old still inside him, and with a safe group of people find what simple, beautiful, connection to other human beings is about.
In eight years of recovery I have went from being constantly angry and yelling at my wife and son to being someone who is balanced, no longer isolated and alone inside, and have happiness in my life - partly because I let people into my soul now because I am no longer afraid of being hurt or misunderstood.
Keep growing Henry, there are many of us with damaged childhoods that are healing and growing into the kind of people we wish we had as parents and peers.
@Froggy Noddy note how there are 5 times as many likes for the guy you insulted as there are for you.
@Froggy Noddy You sound like someone that has a nice selection of jorts and firearms.
@Froggy Noddy I am. I don't have nearly the savvy necessary to find all the good deals on jorts that you have.
Im not tryna judge or put him down but he seems cool to certain people but if you walk around like a pitbull almost barking it just seem so fucking stressful but that could be from coming up in his neighborhood idk but keep rocking
@Froggy Noddy but I can still get even more stupid by using your comma, splices, in, my, replies.
It is amazing what that psychologist figured out just from a drawing. He was pretty much spot on with his analysis
Well, he did have an album called Damaged. It’s not too difficult to extrapolate that..
It's kind of hilarious listening to this guy try to explain Henry's drawing. It's not like Henry just lacks any artistic skill or anything.
Perhaps, or the alternate explanation is it's not the quality but the features of the drawing that show intentions in drawing it.
Henry Rollins is a good guy...end of f*ing story
Nick Paxoulas Yeah, if you pretend Rollins isn't a complete waste of life..
Nexus MOCs Well he lives an honest life. He travels, doesn't drink nor smokes. His life advices are solid amd and probably the most healthy for a person. He is a modern day philosopher
The fact that he chose to do that half-assed tongue-in-cheek drawing has meaning in and of itself.
"I'll take anything at this point". That is both sad and yet funny as hell!
this picture analysis is nonsensical
+Ash Bartlett don't discount his years upon years of study of the psyche... or do, I don't care.
+Ash Bartlett I believe this what is called "armchair psychology". It is generally not considered to be particularly viable, in any sense of the word.
+J Berg Phil McGraw has "done years upon years of study of the psyche", he even has his own tv show! He also got his license revoked a very long time ago. Applying your reasoning, McGraw is a credible source of information regarding human psychology. That would be quite a ludicrous proposition. Just because someone studies a subject for years does not mean they studied well, nor does it signify that they have a good grasp on the subject matter.
This is an awesome video that really shows how is Henry inside and out. You can see how he really was a loner, smart, geek, compassionate guy early in life and at some point just got pissed off at the world or people in general and put on a cold and aggressive shell. He still is that loner, smart guy, who has a passion for life from what his other works hold but at some point those lonely geeks get pissed and just dont take it anymore.
There’s no way of saying this without sounding “gay” but if I was a woman. A real woman with brains and all that. I would be all over this dude.
What on earth did he say that makes you think he'd be a good catch for a woman? He very clearly said that he finds relationships difficult and would fuck anything. That's the exact opposite of what a sane woman wants.
I remember seeing this about 10 years ago! Thans for the upload, thought i'd never see it again.
Back then, it was like Rollins was made of stone. Stoic. Handsome. He seems much more approachable today. Am I wrong?
I love what he said about leaving the house empty like a huge dojo! I would do the same thing if I bought a new house! Computer, clothing, food, drinks and music equipment/weights are the only things I would move in.
The fact that you would do this interview shows an aspect of introspection and self analysis. This shows a maturity of a soul.
I was drinking water when he said, "when you go out for too long with a women, the ovaries start to speak". The I coughed and water went up my nose.
Rollins is so intense, sometimes it makes me laugh. Like real laugh, with noise.
It's ridiculous. I respect him for being honest, i know he's real, but my brain can't go with it for too long before giving me a nudge. It only lasts a few seconds, then i'm ok with it again.
Coming from an art background, I'd say maybe he drew this this way because he never really learned to draw, b/c he didn't give a fuck about it or it's not what he wanted to do (hence he is a musician, writer and spoken word performer).
Umm, could that be it? Naw. To simple. Not psychological enough.
Maybe....or maybe Henry just sucks at drawing.
No. He could have just drawn a stick figure. He didn't have to emphasize or label his unskillful drawing. Your personality can be read through your handwriting, alone.
When I was younger I didn't appreciate Rollins at all. But within the last two years I find myself becoming more & more into him & also I've discovered that who I've become as a man based on my personal experiences is very similar to who Rollins is as a man. Because of that I'm able to connect & understand him as an artist & as a human being in ways that were impossible for me as an adolescent. He truly is fascinating & I'm grateful to my friend for re-introducing Rollins to me
8:12 It was very hard for me to not busy out laughing. The question, and facial expression was hilarious.
Thank God he found music.
Otherwise, he would have definitely been a serial killer.
I love this honesty!
I actually recall meeting friends like Henry's dad back in fifth grade and they would give me advice when I didn't need it. I no longer see them.
I must say I like both versions of Ministry. I really love synth-pop and metal. It's one of, if not the only band that's ever made that kind of transition. Kudos to there ability to drastically change and take their work in a new direction.
I can't tell if this is a troll, or if you genuinely think that Rollins was the lead singer of Ministry
@@arielmoon4021 LOL. I swear I posted this comment on the video of ministries first album not this video. I think it's funny enough the leave it up.
@@guitargod259 I love this whole exchange. What a funny little world we’re in that this type of mistake can even happen. I’m glad you kept this here, it’s a nice moment of levity before bed.
I love it when he talks about his dad
Jesus, I can relate to alot of what Henry said. Crazy.
"I'll take anything at this point". That is both sad and yet funny as hell! Just let it roll man! There are many chicks who dig you man!! Get Em'! Enjoy them!
Henry is fucking great! I’ve seen his solo show many times since the late 80’s and he’s always been hilarious!
His drawing “skills” are actually better than mine!
Henry is awesome!!!!
Psychologists make things sound so interesting. I don't know if it's a pseudo-science but it's entertaining, the analysis.
He's a cool guy and I think he's learnt alot in life, he's got alot to say.He says it well
When I watch a psychologist "analyze" someone in this way, e.g. Rollins's drawing of a human figure, I worry that viewers will think that the mental health profession is a joke. Clearly Rollins likes being goofy, and he probably can't draw well enough to want to be evaluated in front of millions of viewers on how realistically he can render a human figure in under a minute. So, understandably, he chose to make a joke out of it. The subsequent analysis -- well, you know where I'm going with this.
The smallness claim was ridiculous, most people who can't draw would draw a stick type figure. The damage though might mean something, Rollins is an intelligent guy so I'd say it almost certainly does mean something.
One could make a solid argument that this is the most interesting Henry Rollins interview to date.
thank you
assaulted by puberty. no greater truth for me, way back then.
the narrator sounds like the same guy from Kurt and Courtney lol
Another guy that should have been a guidance counselor, Henry Rollins that is. Just like Peter Gabriel, he admits not being extremely talented or intelligent but highly determined and obstinate.
thank you.
I think Henry is a very intelligent articulate man who has an incredibly big heart. He has been scarred by his parents, particularly his father and therefore developed his stage persona of tough, angry man. Part of that is real; however, I get the impression that he is fighting his true self, the self he hides in his solitude. He is in such a race to not be his father that he turned to ultra-radical liberalism which unfortunately makes sense although he overshot a bit. Now that he is 58, he seems to be settled down and has softened around the edges a bit, but it's obvious he keeps everybody at an arms distance. That's a shame, because he seems like a bit of honest love would be good for him. I suffer from the same stuff. I watch this and I can relate to everything he says. I wish him well and hope he knows he is a better man than he thinks he is. Love to HR. :)
Ultra-radical liberalism…do you even hear yourself? At best he was on the center left of the Democratic Party.
"a fear of being damaged..."
DAMAGED = BEST FUCKING BLACK FLAG ALBUM
this guy makes me want to do pushups
I'm happy to know that Henry and I share the same drawing skills.
thing is, any psychopathology Henry has is the very thing which has propelled him artistically this whole time; initially his unbridled self-directed rage and extreme isolation, where he projected all his attachment needs onto music and literature, forever alienating himself from people; and following this, the efforts he has gone to throughout the years to try and mend the immense psychological scarring that he wielded upon himself as a adolescent and young adult,
henry knows what a man want's. as in himself
He is one of the few people that says what he thinks its right, and I like it...
thumbs up for that dope bass line
LMFAO...
LONG LIVE HENRY ROLLINS!
(All my love Brother!)
this reeks of the 90's
wow! that's awesome. henry just gets cooler and cooler.
Good video.
Henry is a odd guy and a pretty deep thinker...I like it!
This is why people doubt psychology as a legitimate science.
Tearing song got me thru lotta breakups and new one
Psychology is like an art really. Its so open to interpretation and there are so many branches of opinion, its ultimately bullshit. I've had 3 psychologists and none of them helped me know myself better.
me: analyzes the picture with my (limited) psychological knowledge
the psychologist: says something totally different and nonsensical
me: what the fuck
OMG I TURNED MY MOM'S OLD ROOM INTO MY DOJO AS SOON AS SHE MOVED OUT OMFGGGGGGG
This stuff is really interesting. I'm majoring in psychology right now and a lot of this reminds me of the documentaries my teacher draws upon for examples of what she's talking about. Makes me wonder how I'd do on this test though...(biting own lip)
Henry is one of my favourite people in the world! Nick Cave is there aswell!
"Im just a well spoken muscular celebrity icon I have no luck with women" hahaaa
for a few months i admired this guy. until i realized my life.
I saw Rollins play around 2000 or 2001 in the Key Arena at Seattle Center during Bumpershoot
D. Jones he tried to get me back stage at his show at Georgia State University in 1993.
freaking brutally honest
He says that he thinks love is one of the two most powerful experiences of his life, and this comes from someone who saw his best friend get splattered on his doorstep among other crazy stuff. People who draw the connection between love and softness is full of shit.
i wanna find more episodes of this
that little "hey" *smile he does at 8:05
Agreed Bro..........Henry Is The GENUINE Article........No B.S And He Practices What He Preaches 100%!
When I had a psychological test given to me they made me do the person drawing. Then things got weird.
I will never get back these few minutes of my life
Regardless of what everyone's opinion of the shrink's analysis, Henry is a very interesting person. Whether you like him as a person or not, he's very unique and raw.
Excuse me if I don't take life advice from Henry Rollins. Seriously, who told this guy he's a sage?
I can so relate to him.
i relate to much with henry. especially with dating.
I dont know what to believe about Henry. Hes told so many contradictory stories over the years. Love him...but his stories dont always add up...
If they could make all men from a mold of him, we'd be in great shape.
awesome video, thanks for sharing thiis. im curious though, what was the other most powerful experience in his life? anyone know?
oh i love u henry
From a psychological perspective Rollins is not a normal client. People like him, men like him have convinced themselves of looking themselves as a warrior, this sort of romantic version of themselves, alone and against the elements, removed from human interaction. And they aren't introverts, which is all the more puzzling. I think Rollins said it himself, is that even with a relationship, a friend, that really that person wouldn't find Rollins hasn't much to offer. Or he perceives himself in that way. I think he has built a glass house that he can't get out of. He's the type of person that when presented with crisis would mostly likely never recover. But a lot of this is smoke and mirrors. You have to wonder at the image Henry Rollins wants you to believe is him, and what in fact is actually him. I think his private persona is that of a recovering addict, bordering on obsession as a means of trying to cope with his addictions. Something like a man who has grown up not knowing structure or discipline and has had to create it for himself.
I would agree with the general gist of that. However I think it's more so that when he (or cases like himself) reach out to find someone they only find contempt for that person or something that's not there, so he uses the warrior mentality to cope with the fact that he hasn't found anyone to love even though he is going out of his way to find someone.
Jon Gardner I'd say that removing the words "something like" from your last sentence would make it a bullseye.
The psychologist has no idea what he's talking about. The drawing doesn't represent damage or a fear of damaging others, it represents him not really giving a fuck about detail and having a sense of humor like "haa I'm going to make him mutated". That's it.
Agreed... that's what much of psychology is. A specialization in bullshit.
foroparapente John Bush There's a difference between sound psychology and watching a person draw the figure twilly-nilly than make assumptions based on that drawing.
Big fan
he's got that typical soldier look
Enter the void, empty and become wind.
Henry Rollins is the most extroverted introvert on the planet.
He fuckin' loves people, he's so idealistic and stuff. But has no close relationships.
hes an introvert with expression
That's sweet

"Planet"😂😆🤣
It's 2019 did you seriously just say the word planet?
