My favorite Henry quote (on playing shows for sparse crowds):
"It doesn't matter how many people are there. I don't care if there are only two people out there. Those two people came out to see you, and it's not their fault nobody else showed up. You go out there and you give those two people the best fucking show of their lives."

    • @angryeel2864
      @angryeel2864 4 ปีที่แล้ว +323

That's actually a Chuck Dukowski quote, the original bassist from Black Flag. He said that to Henry early on when he joined the band and there was sparse attendance at a gig. Henry was apparently a little bummed by the lack of people there and wasn't fully into it. The Duke grabbed him and said that quote with the conviction Dukowski was known for, especially back then, which stuck with Rollins thereafter. And rightly so, it's a kick ass quote!

But, it was just a group of people on a front porch in Athens, GA. listening to Henry banter on about this, that and the other. And in between his planned word constructs, he was just conversational. He would just randomly ask someone a personal question and then want to know more and more about them. My daughter had just been born(so that puts it at 28 years ago) and we ended up discussing her and he dove deep in asking the 20-year-old me how I was handling it, among other things. It was like a therapy session with a really intense and really nice therapist. About 8 years later, I ran into him at an event in Dallas, TX, and as soon as we made eye contact, I saw that light go on and he immediately asked how my daughter was, and that she must be around 8. We chatted for a few minutes and it was like catching up with an old friend.

Yup, same here. What changed my mind about Henry was his stand-up special "Keep Talking, Pal." I always had respect for him, but found his earlier work/ talks/energy to be... exhausting, for many reasons I won't go into here as I may have already in earlier comments. Currently, I'm a HUGE Rollins fan.
And I don't mean to objectify the guy but... He's aged well and definitely a "silver fox" IMHO, although a lot of my attraction towards him is based on his personality. If he looked like he does now and still behaved the way he did 30 years ago? I wouldn't find him attractive at all.
I'm not saying you're objectifying him though! I could be wrong, but it sounds like we're mostly on the same page as far as what makes him attractive... it's what's inside as much as the outside.

What I love about Henry is he just seems like a smart, well-read person who could be anything, a life-coach, a CEO, a rockstar, whatever his passions, or angry, led him to. That's what makes him so captivating and I think why he's been so successful.

His analogy about not losing the ambient rage but recognizing he should sharpen his skills- the scalpel versus hacking the forest bit- is amazing.
Like, that's a piece of life advice everyone could use- especially since it comes from this "battle hardened" hardcore pioneer who has also fit into other aspects of popular culture without sacrificing his character or sense of self.

Not sure many people caught that, but you did. I believe most people tend to hack away on their paths because pride gets in the way. Tearing down those personal barriers allows the scalpel to move in precision, but as Henry suggests keeping the intensity or rage. NICE!!!

BUT THEN: I recently saw a clip of a show he did in Portland (Keep Talking, Pal) and I was FLOORED. Rollins was *happy* and *funny.* I ended up buying the show... It's hilarious.

The actual people on the street are not their government, just like the people on the street here in the US are not our government. The man went to Tehran and spoke to actual people face to face, and he was commenting about that experience. If anyone fucks with me, I’LL HANDLE EM”
Later edit: And I’ve read several of Henry’s interviews dating back to his first interviews with fanzines back in the early 80s and he’s really engaging in down to earth if the questions are interesting but incredibly dismissive if the questions are stupid and ignorant

Absolutely agree! I had a chance to meet him briefly years ago after Katrina. I'm originally from New Orleans but had been living in Texas when the hurricane hit. It totally leveled the home I grew up in and my old neighborhood was just wiped off the face of the planet. When my old next door neighbor sent me pictures of it I rented a pick-up truck and headed home. I wasn't with any particular group and some asshat had the nerve to tell me that I couldn't help clean up the area where my neighbors home used to be. She tried to explain to him that her family owned the property but her grandmother was to old to be out in the sun sifting through the wreckage trying to salvage any little piece of her home she has been in for 80 year's. I told him that we weren't looting or being in restricted areas or anything like that and what right does he have to stop someone from being on their own property assessing the damage caused.
Well according to him, he was with fema and the area is a bio hazard due to the sewage and whatnot that was in the flood waters and he said that if we didn't comply that her granny would be ineligible to receive assistance from fema and possibly even her home owners insurance.
I don't know how much of that sh!t was true and how much was him being a bully with a badge but we were at the coffee shop on the corner kinda just trying to wait out the guy so we could walk back over there and keep doing what we were doing and I guess we were being a bit loud about our outrage at the audacious behaviour of fema guy over there, because when this brunette in her 30s sauntered over and asked what happened, we had the attention of everyone in the café.
So turned out that she was on Henry Rollins staff and they were down there helping with the clean up as well and she invited us to come hang out with them and help.
Of course we said yes. We had plenty of energy to burn off at this point. So we actually wound up spending several days with the crew. Henry was filming and had appearances to make as part of his fundraising contributions so I didn't think of them as part of his crew just as some cool new friends trying to help make things easier for those who had been hit so hard.
On day 3 he showed up on site and EVERY ONE was like Sir-Yes-Sir all the sudden it was like something out of a military training academy. I was kinda freaking out like, should we go, or hide or something? But shortly after that we were introduced to him and he was so nice and so attentive it's unnerving. Have you ever had someone REALLY listen to you, like really listen, not just waiting for their turn to talk.
There is no one else I can compare him to.
He is so utterly in the moment with everyone he talks to its fascinating to observe. The only way I can discribe it is to say that every second that he spends is deliberate. There is no small talk or polite but forced meet and greet, he was exactly where he wanted to be at all times. And his crew wasn't behaving like soldiers out of fear or duty, it was out of total respect for the professional that he is and the knowledge that he is going to give you the equal amount of respect in return.
He wasn't there to get his picture taken or shake hands with the Mayor while he writes a check and says how sorry he is. Nope. He got down in the dirt with the rest of us and busted his ass doing all that he could no matter how mundane or manual the labor was. It was humbling and I aspire to be more like him every day. He really is a genuinely good guy.
People can throw shade all day long but when the going gets tough, Henry grabs a shovel and says move out of the way I got this.

He likes to hear stories about how different people from all walks of life are able to take something that he wrote about how he perceived life at that moment, and turn it into something that they were able to apply to their situation and it gave them what they needed at the time... Only be said it way cooler and worded it much better lol I'm just trying to give you the jist of the story. Either he really enjoys meaningful connection with fans or he was trying to sell me a book. Lol but if he does come to a town near you, go see him. Tell him hi for me from the people who he helped in new Orleans and let him know that he made a difference and we're forever grateful to him for all of it... (That should get the ball rolling.)

Henry Rollins is very well known to be responsive to fan emails, and really doesn't try to hide it, I mean here try it for yourself two1361@aol.com. I will send the whole email in text on here since it was really funny and in true Rollins fashion.
"Liam. Thank you for your letter. I had a great time doing the Calvin Klein shoot day, all 75 minutes of it. I have been using that brand since I was in Black Flag. Flag are a bunch of old men who have to ply their past to pay the rent. They are taking battle hymns and turning them into entertainment. That to me is the ultimate sell out. Calvin Klein wants me to be in some ads, I have been in their ads since 1993 I think. What, I can't do things because I was in a band once? Fuck that. I do whatever comes my way that seems interesting.
A Black Flag shirt being sold for a dollar or 250 has nothing to do with me. I don't own the name, the logo or call the shots. Call Greg Ginn. If he is able to respond from his cloud of marijuana smoke, let me know what he says, on the other hand, don't bother.
Life is short. I ride the big waves on the Sea of Consequence. Calvin Klein ad at 55 years of age? Absolutely. Hopefully they run all the pictures extra large and very, very brightly lit. It's all vengeance and defiance to me and I am not interested in being quiet or tasteful. I hope that answered your questions. Henry Rollins"

Sean put together one of the coolest gigs someone could have. He gets to sit with people we'd all love to sit with and share some food and stories about life. I run out of time to watch a movie at night since his videos are one of those I spend my time viewing.

I was happy when I saw Rollins mention that, it's very true in the modern world where two cultures are in a cultural cold war, we perceive the opposite sides as different or even evil when in reality the sides are two happy groups separation by a massive wall of false information and mis-representation, like a wall with a painting of a big angry monster when behind it is a happy family, everyone I've met who's gone to Iran has had nothing but nice things to say and seems almost blown away by how pleasant the people were against their expectations from their society
