EPIC Fly-fishing Adventure in the Scottish Highlands | NC500 Route | Wild Brown Trout

  • Join me on the north coast of Scotland where I fish for wild brown trout in what must be one of THE BEST small stream and hill loch systems in the country. The fish are stunning, beautifully proportioned and eager to take a fly. The scenery is almost as impressive!
    Blue line angling with fibreglass rods, dry fly and traditional wet fly fishing are the order of the day.

    So what's the script with permits for these wee burns/hill lochs? If they're on an estate etc
    Cracking video mate

    • @SouthsideFlyFishing
      @SouthsideFlyFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks mate. You can get permits for most rivers/lochs up that way easy enough. I just did a bit of research and found the right angling club for the area I wanted to fish. There’s Gairloch, Scourie, Shieldaig lodge, anchorage, altbea, Assynt group - quick bit of Googling and you’ll find permit details for literally thousands of lochs and streams 👍🏼

    That was excellent. I did like the tips and suggestions. What would be good would be for you to say why you’ve used fly x rather than any of the other 200 flies in your box, and why you’ve chosen a static or retrieve presentation. That will help people like me that can’t catch diddly-squat here on Skye. And….cutting to music now - nice!

      If you get up into the Highlands
      or Hebrides there are lots of small locus and streams off the beaten
      track where you can fish for
      trout all day with no license.
      It's really Salmon fishing which is
      subject to licensing laws .
      Try Sutherland/ Wester Ross and
      Lewis / Harris . Off the main road you will find places. Good luck !

      Generally yes Stephen. I wouldn’t expect a fluo pink blob to work on wild brownies (although you never know). But buzzers, crunchers, diawl bachs, beetles, daddies black lures in smaller sizes will all work on their day. I fish dries and traditional wet flies 99% of the time

    Sean, great video. You make some pertinent points and inadvertently raise another one in particular that I am constantly frustrated by. We have wonderful wild brown trout fishing available in so many rivers but the size of the fish are in keeping with their habitat. So many anglers call for stocking as they want big and easy to catch trout but they overlook the ubiquitous wild brownies in our rivers and show little appreciation for the natural stock. Understanding that rivers aren't supposed to produce large numbers of big trout is the starting point but one that is missed by many. It is all about tempering expectations and developing appreciation of the wild environment and the fish that have inhabited and adapted to survive in it over 10,000 years rather than the recent stillwater phenomenon that encourages 10lb plus fish that are stocked a few days before! Keep travelling.

    • @SouthsideFlyFishing
      @SouthsideFlyFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Stuart, really glad you enjoyed the video and took the time to share your thoughts. So much to digest there! I think stocked fisheries have their place, particularly for families and people getting into angling. But I agree that this can inflate the expectations of newcomers to the sport and feel we really ought to value the resource we have on our doorstep. As a society, we've got a long way to go in terms of learning to appreciate, protect and nurture wild fish and their habitats both on land and in the sea. I honestly feel the excellent points you make are part of a much larger conversation that we should be having about biodiversity, the land and our relationship to it. Celebrating the stunning wild fish that we have in our rivers and lochs would be a brilliant starting point. As would avoiding any comparisons with pellet-fed rainbows!

      @@SouthsideFlyFishing Sean, I agree entirely and didn't mean to discount the value that still water put and take fisheries have for angling and introducing newcomers. Your 💯% spot on with what u say it’s clear to see your love of fly fishing ! When I started fly fishing very young I just wanted to catch big fish,like many anglers still do, but as I got older I realise how amazing & beautiful small wild trout are. I’m on my local northern irish river every weekend since 1st of March and it’s now July and I haven’t met one angler yet. Cause the fish are all around 6-10 inches. Personally I think u can’t beat it catching small trout on a light rod and dry fly!! But come the end of July to October when dollaghan and salmon arrive there’ll be a lot more people on it.

      You've described my own journey pretty much! I love catching big trout but get a totally different sense of joy from catching fish in these wee intimate streams. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to pull a 17-incher out of a little burn! But I'm learning to appreciate the beauty of every single gift nature choses to offer you in these places, regardless of how big they are. Aye, fill your boots before the big fish hunters show up on your local river! Tight lines mate 🙏🏼🐟

    • @SouthsideFlyFishing
      @SouthsideFlyFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks John! Glad you liked the video! For the small streams, I go for a 3 or a 4wt. A 3wt is great because even a little one will put a bend in the rod. But 4wts tend to perform better in the wind (and as you know, it can get a bit windy up north!). I've just ordered a 6'6 4wt Greys GR60 that I'm planning to use for fishing the wee stuff. I also have a couple of glass rods that are ideal for this style of fishing. But essentially, you'll enjoy fishing with something much shorter and lighter than the rod you use on the reservoir!
