    I'm surprised you didn't mention Builders club. It was one of the very last things that was remaining until their corporate overlords nuked it, and removed any shred of personality left in the platform. What made Roblox so special back when I first played over 10 years ago is that it felt more like a community project more in line with something like Garry's Mod than an actual platform to play games on, which I think fits the theme of the whole platform a lot better considering it's limitations compared to a normal game engine. The site wasn't just about playing games, but messing around with the platform's features and goofing off with the community. They've pretty much moved away from that, and the result is the corporate husk we have today in it's place. Sure, modern Roblox has more features than ever to better assist game developers in making high quality and profitable games using the site, but for me, that was never the point. The simplicity was key, and the creations that spawned from the limitations usually had more of a focus on passion than profit, and ultimately had much more of a soul than anything on modern Roblox.

    I feel like the core reason why Roblox is not working, Is that they're trying to be like discord. Discord used to be exclusively marketed towards gaming, and that worked. Eventually, more people started making servers for other topics, so discord saw that, and decided to widen their scope by becoming a more generalized social media. Roblox is trying to do this, going from a predominantly game platform to more of a social interaction platform, but the problem is that a very large amount of people are still not wanting to change. Roblox is desperately trying to widen the platform's scope, but falling flat. They need to realize that most of their audience is just there to play cool games.

    • @ArbitraryOutcome
      @ArbitraryOutcome 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Ah yeah, Roblox trying to be an "all-in-one" type thing when being a gaming/creative platform was something that already worked for them. If anything, I think Roblox needs to do a better job at supporting single-player games when their current platform inherently puts them at a disadvantage.

    • @rnindless
      @rnindless 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    What I miss the most about OG Roblox (2016 for me) is for sure the old tycoon and obby music. Ever since they took out the old songs bc of copyright it hasn't ever felt the same. Not only that, but so many games are so oversimplified now. Most of these simulators all have the exact same boring outline that's just meant to make people spend money to get good. If they could bring back old Roblox music and more original games, Roblox might actually be as enjoyable as the past.

      @streetrider1001 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      yeah I agree, I am a bit more OG than you (2010) but I miss the times where the real good maps were made by people who were just passionate about the game and just made content without the intention to monetize it. I started in 2009 as a guest originally, I still try to rediscover these old tycoons that just have a crude charm to them, instead of the rainbow strobe buttons telling me to BUY ADMIN GAMEPASS FOR 2000R$ and the floors littered with robux purchase buttons for "OP boosts". Modern tycoon games fall into a garbage dump of bad mobile games but in Roblox form, all made out of the same template for a tycoon game with a different kid-magnet title.

    You sir, have hit so many points well. I joined all the way back in 2012, and I was able to experience the growth and decline of Roblox firsthand (albeit with a fuzzy memory).
    Early Roblox really reeked of old internet. It was basically like a 3D flash game arcade where people usually made games-not because they wanted money-but because they wanted to make something fun. So many early games (albeit crude) had so many fun and neat concepts that you don't see often anymore and, if you do, are so heavily monetized that you feel like you're playing a mobile game. Or they're so hidden behind Roblox's terrible search algorithm that you sometimes don't even know they exist.
    I understand why Roblox needs money (they're supplying free servers for us) but I really wish they weren't so open about how you can "get rich" on Roblox. I honestly feel like the mindset of making a game for profit has really hurt the whole platform's innovation mindset. At least, do a degree that is.

    • @nathaniel1069
      @nathaniel1069 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      I agree, I also joined in 2012 but you made one really good point that I want to clarify. Back in the early days, roblox was a small, private corporation which had a higher incentive to retain its player base so this culture easily shifted down to the games themselves. Before 2013 developers weren’t even paid. Roblox as a company could afford to do that.
      Nowadays, roblox is a multibillion dollar huge corporation that actually needs to optimize for revenue to pay for its expenses, or they will go bankrupt, so they can’t mess around anymore. Now it can be seen how this culture has traveled down to the games where developers try to micro optimize their monetization and focus on reaching KPI goals rather than making a fun experience just for the fun of it.
      Funnily enough, the top roblox game, Brookhaven, doesn’t do any of this. It’s simply fun.

      The creativity decline didn't really hit me until seemingly any game with a grind ended up with a set of eggs you can hatch, one or more costing a premium currency, that give you some stupid "pet" to help you grind more. Speaking of grinding, modern roblox games should be charged for the amount of time they try to get you to play/how much they encourage microtransactions. I remember playing games like the first Lumber Tycoon or those "nfs" or "gta" games that were kinda just car tycoons. Wasn't much put into them but enough to maybe keep you occupied for a day or two, maybe you'll come back for shiggles. Gamepasses available but didn't change much and were cheap. Now everything requires weeks or months of grinding or more(all the while they shove their many expensive gamepasses down your throat), which for certain games with a lot of content is acceptable. Most games however don't actually have that much content and instead expect players to sit there doing the same thing for hours at a time, some even expecting the player to have macros set up for autofarming (like why tf should I need to leave a game running whenever I'm not using the computer to unlock a car in a game for example). "roblox is dead" really hit me when I found out "fishing simulator" is another autoclicking dumpsterfire with pets and skins.

    Yup. Roblox overall has just fallen off when it comes to fun games. Sure quality and graphics have improved but that’s just obvious and most games do. Gameplay and creativity is what matters, and when it comes to 2023 roblox, only a couple games have that. I find this year of roblox to be pretty alright and a HUGE improvement from 2022 roblox (which was easily the worst year of Roblox don’t even try to change my mind), but games have just become the same thing and nothing truly interesting. My favorite Roblox game to play atp is Guts and Blackpowder because it’s actually fun, simple, and easily replayable. Just a recommendation game for those who want to find actually fun games to play nowadays. Now let me actually finish the video lmao.

    I work for the studio Cakebomb Studios, most popular for our game Make a Cake: Back for Seconds. We’ve seen the platform change a lot, and our game is sadly now on the more forgotten side of the algorithm despite being HUGE back in the day. I love this platform, and it’s a shame that the death of it’s culture was mostly caused by external forces (lawsuits.)
    We will see where the culture will continue to move, as the site becomes more of a profitmaker and to corporatism. Now that it starts to orient towards adults, maybe we can see a new renaissance in fun times, who knows. There is a lot of money to be made here, which has its own pros and cons.

    Roblox's loss of identity really falls majorly on the staff team itself. Yes, the community sometimes had it's own issues and mistakes when it came to things, but the creativity they had to provide fun and entertaining games to make up for it. Meanwhile the Roblox staff we're making too many horrible decisions that changed up the original feel of Roblox itself and made it for more corporate business instead of the simplicity of true and fun enjoyment.

    I started playing as a guest in late 2014 and i will say that the game did feel more fun because i was younger, more naive, and oblivious, but then there is that undeniable fact that the community was more friendly and lively. I think its because more friendly teenagers + children played.
    And honestly, those who think that children being in the game is annoying are childish themselves. Children being in games makes them easier to play because you can have a chance to beat them, theyre funny to observe or be with, and overall just give the game more joy. I dont know if its just my personality but i dont like how every game i play is filled with grimey teenagers and adults, despite being a teenager myself, i miss the innocence and humor of kids in every game. After all, we are what made roblox popular, kids!
    Also there are so many players making games and items in the shop now that its lost its quality. Quality>quantity. I dont mind the better graphics of games because it can make the game nice and advanced.
    I just wish roblox would stop being so corporate. Its like theyre choosing to ignore our input! We want to play games, not chat and meet up and 'experience' things. We want to be involved in gameplay and special events that require us to actually PLAY the game! A fun game.
    If you read, thank you lol. If not, i understand 💀 i got carried away cuz i have nothing else to do

Most of those games were wacky, fun, imaginative, and so much personality was dropped into those games that you can feel it. Even When I was limited to a few games at max I still had more fun then I do now.

    I started playing Roblox around the time of 2016-17 after Tix got oofed, I think that most Roblox games have one thing in common, as the graphics improve, the creativity of said games decrease. I've paused playing any Roblox for the time being because of schoolwork and other stuff, but since it's pretty clear Roblox is going to go down the drain if the major problems with the platform don't get fixed, I'm contemplating quitting all together. I might play stuff like Blood & Iron, Guts & Blackpowder, D-day, and other great games, but lets all hope the creativity of Roblox games returns to its former glory.

The average quality of games has gone down but damn, when you find one or two of those hidden gems past the front page that took time, effort, passion and the blood sweat and tears of the developers, those games are some of if not the best games on roblox. I joined in 2018, so I'm not someone that experienced what many considered "peak" Roblox, but in my opinion things weren't in a full downward spiral till pandemic hit. Yea looking back there were for sure cracks in Roblox as far back as mid 2010s era, but at that time it wasn't really on the mind of the average player. Nowadays with all these new features they're pushing in your face it's really annoying for your average person. (Like trying to moderate voice chat?) But let me get this clear, not EVERYTHING is bad. I'm not trying to be one of those guys that go like "oh all these new features are bad I wish it was whatever era" The webpage was horrid at launch, but I don't exactly dislike it nowadays. I think the platform’s biggest crime is just ignoring the community. I mean the recent TOS updates that Roblox tried to introduce would break GOD knows how many games. Plus the new avatars are just.... Off-putting. Rthro in like 2018 wasn't THAT bad, it was more of a optional thing for added customization and roblox's marketing at the time wasn't hyper focused onto it. In conclusion, while yes roblox has been on a downward trend, not everything has been bad. (Just like 75% of roblox's decisions are stupid, like the people making those choices don't even have roblox accounts)

  • @somethingmysterious1135

    I joined in 2016 and my opinion may be biased, but I think Roblox's direction is generally positive. I think the corporation is viewing the fandom long-term through their recent 17+ update because this shift will decrease their multimillionaire lawsuits from stricter internet policies. Overall, their profits are increasing as they shift their direction; slowly but surely for the company. Although as with any big corporation, their leadership ethics can be biased toward the fandom if the company decides to go to extreme lengths due to the post-pandemic economy it is just my personal take from a sales perspective.(Looking at you TH-cam) So hopefully their morals don't place their profits over the community to the extreme if isn't needed to. tdlr; Roblox is getting older so does fandom, corpo playing long-term. only worry is new leadership in office that are greedy that could take it to the extreme and lose Roblox's core identity/fan base if isn't careful in transition

      It's strange. There's some horrible attempts at individual changes like trying to make all UGC items limited (something that will greatly harm both creators and consumers alike) and the whole "off-sale item" thing they tried pulling (which would pretty much destroy most of their games, old and new, and might lead to TH-cam-esque false copyright claiming shenanigans). But that's all wrapped in with excellent additions like more studio options for developers, more customization options, and just generally more things creators are able to do.

Nowdays if you take any small to mid military group or gun clan as an example you will only see the most hideous things imagineable, lowest points of degeneracy to the most psycho leaders. But it didn't used to be like that: Before that roblox had many varieties to advertise your communities and the amount of groups with young people just expressing their creativity was truly a pinnacle of enjoyment. We were asking this back when 3.0 released and that body type basically took over their marketing, alongside a truckload of packages nobody realistically wore because it was like, 400-800 robux when you could buy multiple hats and faces instead with that money. This happened with Rthro's initial release, and only trolls would even breathe on that aspect of the site for years and only with UGC has it gotten even remotely considerable for use.
    Roblox has just been constantly disassociated from it's own community - it's best not to concern ourselves too hard with Roblox's next suicidal gesture, and instead focus on what we could do for ourselves if we're going to continue to be on the website. I've found Roblox is most sufficient when you are focused on yourself and the small communities that could exist - though, I am speaking as a veteran roleplayer, so my experience may be wildly different.

    Roblox had something special and they were too stupid to realize it. From the distinctly Roblox charming character and level designs to the website UI. It is unrecognizable from its former self. Additionally 90% of website features were removed for no reason killing off every Roblox subculture one by one. The group leaderboard was removed sending war clans into obscurity. Forums were removed which hurt item traders / clans. The ability to see when items were uploaded / sale count needlessly removed. The trading community is a hollow shell of its former self after the UGC update due to users being able to get cooler items/copies for only 30 Robux. Commenting on places, being able to view how many times your profile was viewed, KO/s Wo/s, best friends list, shouts, etc all removed for no reason. Additionally they broke most of the build tools in multiplayer games for no reason destroying the casual building community and discouraging entry level builders. I can't believe Baszucki would let this all happen.

    im sick and tired of this. The bad updates, and the overall negative community who whines about stuff all the time. Its annoying and i wish roblox would pick themselves back up, as well for the community to stop crying about it. Like thats ever going to happen.

    I finally dived into Roblox like a year ago. And while it IS a cool service (and hay its free with micro transactions), I'm surprised it doesn't have a better SERACH function or ways to Find games. Like your telling me you have GOD KNOWS how many games and no way to Filter your search beyond tying in a name? I'm sure their are PLENTY of grate games to play, but good luck finding them without people like You Skit or Tankfish doing videos on said games.

    Roblox in the 2010s was absolutely amazing, games like flood escape, work at a pizza place, epic minigames, MM2, Roblox High School, Speed Run 4, Prison Life, Deathrun, and Natural Disaster Survival were so fun to play back then, I played those games a lot. But now, unfortunately today roblox has tuned into a shitty corporate company that is EXTREMELY out of touch with their community, they dont care about their players anymore. Meanwhile, their moderation is absolutely terrible, lots of inappropriate assets, many incidents with predators, bad updates, trying to erase their past by going rthro, messy UGC, etc. you also have meepcity and the horror of its parties containing so much inappropriate content, with roblox taking barely any action whatsoever until constant outcry and many TH-cam videos made them act, permanently removing parties from MeepCity.

    i like how people say " old roblox was better i wish it changed back" while simultaneously funding the roblox corporation with their money which is the sole reason why these changes were put in motion 😂 so if you truly want roblox to not go into the direction its going stop creating content or buying content that gives roblox the incentive to take advantage of you lol

    me as a roblox user since November 2015, i can definitely say that roblox has changed significantly over the years. we are now getting all of this trashy AI generated and ugly avatars, i can still sorta remember when i used to play it in early 2016. and man times were simple back then. i kinda wished i had a time machine and go back to when i used to not get as many headaches back then when i used to not be an overload of everything on the internet now and days.

    It isn't necessarily losing it's identity, it's only getting so big that its identity is way way more complex than before.
    In its current state, it is mostly the same game with new features. However, with the influx of Roblox's horrible changes that move the "game" towards being more generic and the newer generations of players who are content with them we might slowly lose any identity to begin with as it will either fade away or become completely unrecognizable as Roblox if the course is not corrected.
    I still find a small amount of love for parts of Roblox, that are around the same as they were years ago. As of now, the direction the game has gone can be mostly ignored as long as you know what you enjoy in the large catalogue of games, but this may change soon.

    Community diverges , shifts and ultimately changes . For better or for worst as trends and attitudes change . We get new players who think differently but similarly. They still want fun but want different from the same games had in 2013-2014 or even before . Personally i think its good I still play often with friends and it's just something I play with friends only often . Besides friends most game get bland and it's just better to play another game . There is also the idea of just doing something else entirely like a hobby. It's just people growing up and tides changing really. Mainstream appearances also helped a lot .
