Unbelievable to see the RDCs still in operation in 2023. The Budd people that designed and built these nearly 75 years ago knew they had a winner on their hands back then but I'll bet they never counted on longevity such as this. A solid tribute to American design and manufacture--they'll be around a lot longer. Thanks for sharing.
We've got a couple of these Budd cars (B&M livery) up here in N. Walpole, NH/Bellows Falls, VT They're in need of restoration. I remember commuting in them from Gloucester, MA to Boston back in the 60's.
It is nice to see 140 again! It was parked near my house on a leg of the wye west of Needham Junction for years. My dad made an HO model of it by modifying an Athearn RDC.
The Budd Company built really solid equipment, from RDCs to coaches of all types and configurations. Here in Canada, Budd built rolling stock is still used on scheduled trains everyday, including coaches, sleepers, observation cars, dome cars, diners, and baggage cars. After over 70+ years of service and numerous rebuilds and upgrades, they will be around for a while longer.
I used to vacation in Lincoln & saw the Hobo RR rolling stock incl the "Roger Williams" set included here. For those who are curious the "Roger Williams" was a special trainset built by Budd in Phila. for the New Haven RR using RDC technology but in a special dedicated train with streamlined cab-end cars at both ends. Where's this equipment headed now that it left Lincoln?
If those cars are 75 years old and likely built at the Budd plant at Red Lion, Philadelphia, my grandfather was production manager at that time and would have overseen their construction. He was also responsible for overseeing construction of the first Vistadome observation car. The first one "leaked like a sieve." as he recalled.
Those old Budd's reminded me of years gone by when all MARC Camden line used old Budds like the lead B&O car. They use to sway from side to side approaching stations an were loud and black smoke coming from the diesel engine at the top of the car. I looked it up turns out that was an old MARC unit number 1. Its a strong possibility I have been on it at least once in the 80"s before moving on.
I got to ride on one of the B&O RDCs in 1992 from Camden Station to Washington Union Station. There were few people aboard so I spent most of the trip at the railfan "seat" in front and shot stills as we passed JD Tower, Relay, MD, the Thomas Viaduct, Riverdale, and at the junction where the NEC, Camden Line, and the Metropolitan Sub all converge. usually one has to jostle for position or split time with others to get good photos while riding, but I pretty much had the whole thing to myself. That was a good day.
I remember as a kid in the early 60's playing by the tracks in Dedham/Readville area MA how quiet and fast these were. Kept us on our toes in terms of track walking, that's for sure!
I'm from Long Island, and I remember seeing a couple of RDC's on the Port Jefferson Branch, but they Never had Diesel style cabs, on them. For some reason, they were Not as popular, being that the LIRR, was mostly a 'Subsidiary' of the Pennsy, for quite a few years, and a lot of older PRR passenger cars, were used in 'interchange service', at Penn Station.
Rode in the cab or one of the roger williams units on the shore line at speed in the early 60's. Fan trip out of boston to fitchburg, down to mansfield and return to boston.
Frenchie here. I did not know there were RDCs with an EMD look ! For witch RR companies were they bilt ? Were they intended to be used as DMUs ? Thank you, and sorry for my broken/airport english...
I thought I saw the Roger Williams there in mid July. Had it and the other cars been sent up to be refurbished, or did they belong to the Hobo for a while?
Were these the Budd cars in Lincoln, MA, or somewhere else? I didn’t think that track still went anywhere (it used to go from Arlington, Ma all the way to Reformatory Station in Concord, Ma)
@@RailroadEngineer123 Hobo only refurbished them and that was the plan all along, im not sure what the museum is going to do with them, whether it be display or as you said restorational operation
@@Mountaindivisionrailfan252 I never knew that. I know they remained at Hobo for a long time. I hope Berkshire restores it to operational condition. I guess only time will tell.
My special needs son loves trains 🚆🚃🚄🚅🚇🚈🚉🚊🚝🚞🚋🛤 especially railcars like those he thinks they are highly underrated rail transportation vehicles and all should be preserved, restored, and put back into service carrying both passengers and mail on tracks that are not used anymore or at least don't get passenger service. He also thinks that Siemens, Progress Rail, or any other company that builds railroad equipment should build exact copies of RDC's and the departments of transportation should rebuild railroad lines that were abandoned and removed and run these on them. Definitely! The line was only some 50 years old when the steamers ran on it. Then again these cars haven't moved since the 2000's, so maybe they're going slow for safety? Not sure.
Understand the concept of the "zombie" railway The B&M likely operated it as a 50MPH scheduled service. It died and yet it still moves in a decayed state.
Sale of the Hobo Railroad to Patriot Rail may be a good reason this equipment departed.
That is exactly the reason. I just wasn't allowed to tell anyone.

In Australia we have a very similar kind of locomotive like the one leading the train, its called the Victorian Railway Y class
What a catch this is an amazing little train

Love the Budd cars, don't know why many small rails don't use them on fan trips. Those NH with a nose look kind of different.
1:01 Holy mackinaw what are those RDCs doing with cab noses? I'm a big RDC fan and I have never seen those 😅
Never seen a loco like that before! Very strange, but yet interestingly cool.
Are you talking about the Roger Williams or the red 1590 up front? Both are pretty cool and have interesting histories!
@Mountaindivisionrailfan252 not the engine in lead (or pulling the cars) but the two that are half loco an half passenger car.
Can anyone tell us about these half loco / half pass cars ? Or are the locomotives made to look like a passenger car ? Very interesting L

LIRR had a fatal accident with their Budd cars ( hit a truck I think) and the engineers union convinced management to get rid of them.
