  • 03-31-11 Installed a hypercharger on my 2008 V Star 1100 today. Not too bad of a job. Hope this video helps you decide if you want to do it yourself or call in a professional. Use the video at your own risk. I am not a motorcycle mechanic and my way may not be the right way. Part 3 of 3.

    What a convoluted intake. A miracle the bike even runs.

    thank you for this video I bought a bike that previous owner had installed the hypercharger and that hose had dry rotted .... it took me some time to figure out what the aftermarket air cleaner was and i would have never realised i had a vacume leak on top of needing a new air filter but now i have a fully working setup

      Glad to hear you got your bike running good. It's always a good feeling when you fix it yourself.

    I can not tell if it improved performance. I did not put it on a dyno after the upgrade. It felt like it did, but when you put louder pipes on the bike, it always seems faster. My guess would be gas millage went down a little with the bigger jets, plus the temptation to get on it a little harder. I did have a video of the bike with the exhaust and hyper-charger on you tube but I had to take it off because of copyrighted music.

      The problem is when you keep the original airbox under the tank , airflow is still restricted even after a hypercharger is installed..when I did my 2008 Yamaha v star 1100, I took the airbox completely out and added a separate hypercharger for each carb naturally I couldn't use the air tube that came with the v star . I bought 2 rubber elbow connectors, in the future I plan to replace to chromed metal. then i made some brackets to fit for both sides. I saw a big performance boost immediately and not just because I re -jetted the carbs. Haven't ran a dyno yet, I will soon so I can find out how much hp and torque the engine now has..I know that I have better fuel mileage than before , it doesn't take as much throttle to get going and get up to the speed limit..still have one more upgrade to do involving the cluches, clutch plates,friction plates and a spring clutch kit to replace the diaphragm plate that is factory. this upgrade will grab tighter and prevent slipping at lower speeds and higher torque and will make more precise clutch adjustments ..

      @@brians.1247 I don't want to discourage you in modifying your bike because it is a fun thing to do and there is a possibility for increasing horsepower. A hypercharger works by increasing air pressure and volume into the carburetors by ramming air into them as your speed increases. If you look at the opening shot on the video, look at the upper right part of the video. It clearly shows a cutout in the lower hypercharger housing where air can pass from the intake and straight out the cutout bypassing the ram air effect of the hypercharger on the carburetors . I am not sure why they do this but it seems counter intuitive to ramming the maximum amount of air to the engine. This bothered me right away when I installed mine and made me skeptical of the horse power increase I was going to gain. I am not an engineer or for that matter the brightest light bulb in the pack, but in my opinion you could do the same thing with re-jetting and an exhaust change. I have seen modifications that use an air tube going directly to the carburetor using a performance air cleaner and if I was going to do it again that is the route I would take, along with re-jetting and an exhaust change. The other thought I had was the motor was rated at 51 horsepower and the dry weight of the bike was 640 pounds. Even with a 10% gain in horsepower we are taking 56 horsepower total. My last thought is save your money and ride the bike like it is. Buy yourself an old Vmax at 140 horsepower and tear up the town and then pull out your V star and take it out for a cruise after you get your adrenaline rush from the Vmax.

      @@OnTheEdgeNow the porpose of theopening at the bottom of the hypercharger is to let rain water pass through otherwise it would build up around the k&n filter an choke the air flow..

    • @brians.1247
      @brians.1247 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OnTheEdgeNow as far as the actual functionality of the hypercharger it is mostly for looks..you would get the same effect as the dragons breath air intake design but the k&n filters are exposed and not shielded in any way from the elements, debris or run away carts at the store..the hypercharger provides a little protection and it looks cool..

    im doubious about these- i know the jets will help--- didnt know it still used the air box... GREAT JOB tho mines in the post and my brother told me you can get 12BHP with other mods and the hypercharger is mainly for show which is depressing- lol- you can use pod filters i guess--- but im going to try this as at least you have explained everything exellently thankyou for the help great vid!

      I agree with your brother. If you look at the back side of the hyper charger you will see a hole where air can escape before it goes into the carburetor. It was still a fun project and I got to know the inside of the carburetors pretty well. I ended up taking it back off when I did not see a substantial gain in horsepower. I just had to accept the bike was a dog and enjoy it the way it was. It would have cost too much to increase the horsepower to a level I would have liked. I only paid $7700 for the bike brand new off the floor so I didn't want to stick the money in it. I put 29000 miles on it and it was a comfortable bike to ride but I am thinking of selling it. Glad you enjoyed the video. I tried to show things in detail so a person could judge if they have the skill to attempt it themselves.

      we still have the jets and increase in air flow means itll be a fun mod if anything else- thanks dude... i can see how you've paved the way so i know what to expect :) cheers

      I had videos on TH-cam after I put the pipes and hyper charger on but I added music to the video and had to take them off because of copy write infringement. I should look and see if I have the video before I added the music.

    Very good documentation! But I do have one bone to pick with you :) .. After I viewed all three parts, you did not start the bike and let us hear that intake sound ..... great job on this project. But why did you have to bore out those plugs. What purpose did that have? Either I missed it, or you did not talk about it again

    • @OnTheEdgeNow
      @OnTheEdgeNow  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I apologize, you are not the first one that asked why I did not start it up after it was complete. I guess I wanted to hop on the bike and try it out right away. Because of the lack of performance gain I took everything off the bike and put it back to stock. I was riding a Honda CBR1000rr before I bought this bike and I finally realized it is what it is and it will never come close to a CBR. Now I'm happy cruising down the road like Grandpa Gerkins and keeping all the points on my drivers license. The plugs cover the idle mixture screws which may need adjusting after the re-jetting.

    • @Sotonsmr
      @Sotonsmr 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      thats the idle circuit plugs- it reduces decelleration backfire making idle richer as does the shims thru the throttle range... ive had to do this on lots of bikes when u debaffle them :)

    Are we obligate to change the jets in the carburator or is it only to add more power.

    Why is it that it seems like that you use the same size intake and air box after spending a lot of money on a water catching air box sorry but it doesn’t work for the money other than a show piece.

    • @OnTheEdgeNow
      @OnTheEdgeNow  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you 100%. If you look at the back of the hyper charger it has an opening that would allow the collected air to escape. I think a person could get the same results much cheaper by re jetting and pipes alone. I ended up selling the hyper charger to someone else. It did look cool though. When it comes right down to it I realized a V Star is a V Star and if you want more power buy a different bike. Now my V Max is a different story. At 140 horse the thing is a torque monster.
