Do you know if the paint or wallpaper on the walls was green the green pigments used at that time contained arsenic and were pretty toxic so this might explain things.
its possible but the arsenic lead or other harmful chemicals that might cause hallucinations should gradually fade in the passing of many years and yet 30 or 40 years passed and still, people who went there still encountered the strange crature
Only if the walls got wet, ie. Started to mold. Would have taken quite a few years of wear to start to get arsenic poisoning, explaining the passage of time.
that was victorian age, the green pigment was indeed arsenic and there was so much of it that in one occasion, a child who had been shewing on a piece of it died within hours. the damp conditions indoors also created mold and that ate the arsenic and so it created extremely toxic spores. arsenic poisoning is painful and causes both excessive diarrhea and vomiting before death among other painful symptoms like convulsions and confusion.
Glad to see that the animation has really improved in this, it really adds to the atmosphere you're trying to build. Excited to see how you guys go from here!
Love your stories! I first read about the Nameless Horror of Berkley Square in an old book I found. It didn't describe a cephalopod, but the sound of a very heavy bipedal creature climbing the stairs to the second floor. I remember it said the sound was as if its feet had been cut off and was climbing on bloody stumps. I don't remember what happened when it reached the landing. But it was said one sailor was thrown through the window (or jumped) to land on the spiked fence. The other went mad. It was the scariest story I had ever read. I went back for the book several times but never saw it again.
There are many YT channels where listening is as good as watching it, but the joy of you all is looking at the gorgeous artwork along with the narration. Thank you for a cozy story on a day får below freezing.

I've been fascinated by the Berkeley Square Horror ever since first reading of it in an Elliot O'Donnell book as boy. This is the first time anyone ever gave actual names for most of the victims. Thanks for taking the time to do that research.
@@johndavies1090 I don't know if he came up with it, or just repeated what others said. I have read of the Berkeley Horror from other authors who reported it back then and independently of O'Donnell.
The illustrations in your videos are excellent. I'm somewhat of an artist myself and can appreciate the time, skill and effort that has gone into these illustrations. It must have taken many hours of work for just this video alone, and it makes your videos look very unique (and also not re-using other people's content, which is admirable on TH-cam). I'm very impressed.
Nice one guys, I remember reading about this in a book of ghost stories when I was a kid. Forgotten most of them now, but this one stood out. Mainly because it terrified me. I also remember seeing the property featured on a paranormal show around 25 years ago. The owner at that time let the crew in, but told them he'd sealed up "the room". When asked if he'd seen anything he said no, but there were noises from time to time. The main differences in the other accounts of this story that I've encountered were that the mad brother was locked in the bedroom, not the cellar. I guess that could have been an embellishment to try to tie everything together around that room, but who knows? Then in the version that I read the sailor was running back to the house with the policeman, they heard a hideous scream from inside & ran in to find the other chap laying at the foot of the stairs, twisted up & with a look of pure horror on his face. There will always be discrepancies with every retelling tho. Top work as always.
One of the best things I like about your videos. You don't 100% buy into some of these stories. I think everything can be logically explained. It's when you're stumped that's when it gets interesting.
The part with the sailors makes absolutely no sense (from 10:20). Was there someone else present or were there camera's? How else could anyone know that Blunden woke up, saw something slithering towards his mate and grabbed a poker from the floor before the only other 'witness' woke up?
@@rene2106 Hold on; you do understand how storytelling works, right? It's the same way we understand what a character in a film gets up to while completely alone. How can we know what they are up to if no one else is present? Because the camera is telling the story, just as the narrator in this video is telling the story. It's not hard to take an educated guess at what Blunden's actions were before Martin woke up. Fuck, it's just a story!
This has always been one of my favorite ghost stories The only place I ever heard of so terrifying that one would age incredibly & would flee to ones death fling themselves out windows to escape the horror...
Great video, well made as usual! I first heard about the "Horror" of Berkeley Square back when I was in elementary school. From some book in the classroom I read during some free time. I don't think I'd heard about it since ... until this video. When I saw the title "Nameless Horror" I immediately thought, "is this THE Horror I read about as a kid?" (I had forgotten the name Berkeley Square.)
This story has always fascinated me for many years. I worked opposite there and was forever taking pics of the windows at night.. hoping to catch something. Alas never did. Thanks for upload 👏🏼
Great video. This reminds me of a Halloween documentary on the paranormal I saw many years ago, where one of the items in the programme involved interviewing people who work for the antique book seller mentioned in the video - the company is called Maggs Brothers. They moved out of the house in 2015. There were two stories. The first was an account of someone who was working late on the second floor, and at around midnight he heard a thud on the landing outside the room he was in - followed by what he described as: "something large and wet being dragged across the floor". The sound seemed to be getting closer to the door of his office (which was the only way in or out) , and the bloke is by now crapping himself wondering what to do. He somehow got up the nerve to get up from his desk and walk towards the door - at which point the noise abruptly stopped. He looked out on to the landing, only to find nothing out of the ordinary. The interviewer then asked him if he had checked the rest of the house over - and he replied that the next thing he did was to grab his coat and wallet and go home! He also said that he told his manager what had happened the next day - expecting his manager to laugh at him; but he instead became very serious and quiet, and advised him to only work late on his own during the summer months - and to make sure he had gone home before sunset during the autumn and winter. The second story was from a secretary who was looking for some paperwork in a room that was being used for storage. She had left the door half open behind her, and as she was sat at a desk facing the door; she saw: "a black mass - about the size of a few footballs. It was floating about a meter off the ground, and it came in to the room from the landing; and when it came in it knocked the door open all the way. It moved in a straight line from the door to the opposite wall, and then went back out the door again". Apparently she sat there in stunned silence for so long her manager came looking for her. I don't remember the name of the programme or the channel it was shown on. This would have been a late night satellite channel I was watching back in the 90's. The two stories have always stuck with me. No idea if they are true or not, and the programme was shown at Halloween time; so things should be taken with a pinch of salt. However, I think they are two great stories about the house - so I thought I would post them.

So about a day and a half ago I started watching your playlist called "All Episodes in Order". This is the video I'm on and I plan to keep going until I watch them all. And I'll probably drizzle comments in along the way, like this one. Let me just say that I cannot express to you how much it warms my heart and how much I appreciate the fact that at the end of every one of your videos, you essentially say "Hey, we've discussed it, we don't know who's right, but the fact of the matter is that this event was traumatic to [Insert name of affected individual/group of people here] and they were a living, breathing human with friends and family that miss her/him/them until this day. May [Insert name here] rest in peace and may their loved ones find their answers/peace." And that is so amazing. So thank you for your videos (Your content rawks my sawks) and I appreciate you guys as people. Keep up the good work!
Back around 1994 I was in the 1st grade and we went to the library for the first time. I found a little section of paranormal and cryptid books and the first one I ever checked out had a collection of ghost stories. One of them was the Berkeley Square Horror. To this day I remember reading the part about the sailors breaking in. That book and more specifically this story is what started my fascination with all things paranormal and cryptid. Everytime we went to the library after that I would check out one of those books, even if I'd already read it. I had completely forgotten the name of the place in this story until I stumbled across your video. Thanks for the memories and keep up the great work. Love your channel

@Super Otter Idk why you would be sad but you should feel a bit guilty when the USA played a role in ending the British Colonial Empire by seizing its role as the foremost Superpower after WW2 and as the world's largest currency reserve with the dollar replacing the sterling because of how much the UK was indebted to the USA after WWI and WWII. In the Middle East USA did not side with the Brits and France during the Suez Crisis and the USA took upon itself to ally with Saudi for its Oil Reserves after British prestige was shattered after the Suez Crisis for example. The UK has so much to be blame on itself by continuing to relying on an outdated economy model with its colonies even after the age of colonialism wasn't lucrative anymore and it felt that huge blow when colony after colony and its dominions declared independence. USA took upon itself to partner with many of the UK's former holdings. Well off UK citizens and ordinary folk alike migrate to better life elsewhere in the USA, Australia, France, Germany, Spain, China and former colonies. No surprise that many of its immigrants are from former colonial holdings for cheap labor.

@@johndanes2294 interesting. Don't get me wrong, you should never start believing what people tell you, research and look at all the possibilities. But some skeptics are very closed minded. Addendum: I’m pretty sure it was a Ridley’s Believe It or Not graphic novel, and the story was titled “The Thing with Claws.” A major plot point was that, every time an “incident” happened, there would be visible claw marks in the carpet, drapes, furniture, etc., but the victims always died of fright.

As a substitute teacher I used to tell my students a (tamer) version of the nameless horror of Berkeley square if they were good for me. It was one of their favorites.
11:30 Interesting how we have an account of parts of this story that no one alive would know. Martin was supposedly still asleep, but we have an account of what Blunden did during that time, even though he was dead when Martin returned?
question , if the 2nd sailor was asleep until waking to see the 1st sailor (who was killed during the incident) being attacked , then how can we possibly know what the 1st sailors actions were before the 2nd awoke ??.
Sometimes the "straightforward" is the "outlandish". Sometimes to tell the accurate truth without any exaggeration is uncomfortable for people to believe. Yet it is what it is. I'm not speaking of the above account necessarily. All I'm saying is I know it takes alot of courage to speak to others about what many would rather not believe because it threatens their mental comfort zones. All I can say with absolute certainty is this. Spirits absolutely and certainly exist. Take everything with a grain of salt by all means I do as well. But I also know what has happened in my life. And I would rather accept an uncomfortable truth than concoct a comfortable foolish and ignorant lie.
I have an open mind, but I won't straight up believe in something without proof. If there are ghosts then I want tp sit one down and ask them question after question, not see some brief glint of something
Thank you thank you thank you!!! I've been trying to find this story for the longest time! I read it as a teen & to this day I've not forgotten it because it was so terrifying! I'd only remembered the part of the two sailors & now I've learned more about it. 👍👍👍👍👍

Having heard & read this story many times over my 40+ years on this Earth, this version of the Warboys encounter in different than all the others I've read. In the other versions of this story, there is a dinner party taking place at #50, at which the topic of the place being haunted is brought up. Warboys declares he is not afraid to sleep in the "haunted room" and after much convincing is allowed to stay in the room, with the instructions that if anything odd happens he is to pull the servant bells immediately. The rest of the party remains downstairs, anxiously passing the time. Suddenly there is ONE very sharp ring of the servant's bells. Everyone rushes upstairs to find Warboys in the condition mentioned in this version, and he dies later before being able to describe what he saw. In some versions he has a pistol with him, in other versions he's unarmed.

Only if the walls got wet, ie. Started to mold. Would have taken quite a few years of wear to start to get arsenic poisoning, explaining the passage of time.
that was victorian age, the green pigment was indeed arsenic and there was so much of it that in one occasion, a child who had been shewing on a piece of it died within hours. the damp conditions indoors also created mold and that ate the arsenic and so it created extremely toxic spores. arsenic poisoning is painful and causes both excessive diarrhea and vomiting before death among other painful symptoms like convulsions and confusion.
lead too right? Once heat from a fireplace is applied who knows what’s possible. Good call on your part, clever one fruit cat.
I'm glad I discovered this channel, you are the modern day equivalent to Unsolved Mysteries.
You are mixing up the Calvados Castle haunting with this one. I othewise appreciate the enthusiasm
There are many YT channels where listening is as good as watching it, but the joy of you all is looking at the gorgeous artwork along with the narration. Thank you for a cozy story on a day får below freezing.
"Its all faked..."
"Than why dont you stay in there for a night?"
"I... i... i.... i have to write shitty comments somewhere else, so..."
I'll stay there if someone will pay the rent
Maybe octopi are just too smart for us, they can get away with murder
... and, apprently, staying out of water for an extended period of time, and not only surviving but having the energy to throw an attack and fight with much larger and stronger opponents ;)
@@bioLarzen You forget that there's water pipes upstairs. And octopi can traverse them quite easily due to a lack of skeletal structure. You underestimate their abilities and cunning. th-cam.com/video/BN6KEhu6JvE/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/SCAIedFgdY0/w-d-xo.html
They are ridiculously intelligent 🐙 and can last for awhile out of water
Octopodes or octopuses, not octopi. It’s Greek, not Latin. Yes, I know I should get out more.
@@sarahmillard6401 all three forms are correct according to dictionaries. Look it up.
This is probably my favourite paranormal story, so different from the usual ghost or monster tales! Well done and thanks for covering this!
Ugh, do I watch now or do I wait until dark for maximum spooky? Life is so hard!
I upvoted, naturally but, last thing at night with cocoa and popcorn is the way to go for me.
Go max settings, I do everytime.
Life isnr hars you asked a totally, one sided question...darkness of course! I waited like 12 hours to watch this. These guys really are the best at what they do$
Seen it in my news feed at 4pm, saved it till now. (midnight) lol
This channel is one of very few where the time of day is irrelevant; truly one of the scariest on TH-cam. Sad Satan ain't got shit on these guys.
Impossible as it may seem, you folks have actually gone up in my estimations. This has been one of my favourite ghost stories for years. Brilliant! Thanks very much.
Who here is actually watching this in total darkness all alone?? If you aren't then I HIGHLY recommend it. The suspense factor is incredible!! Another great Bedtime Story. Y'all are amazing!!!
I've been fascinated by the Berkeley Square Horror ever since first reading of it in an Elliot O'Donnell book as boy. This is the first time anyone ever gave actual names for most of the victims. Thanks for taking the time to do that research.
Oh, dear, if Elliot O'Donnell had a hand in it, then in my personal opinion it immediately becomes suspect. The man was a fraud and a romancer.
I'm very impressed.
thanks..we try:)
Isn't "Nameless Horror of Berkeley Square" technically a name? 😏
Haha, yes it is!
Maybe that is its name and he was just discussing it formally
But not like “Trevor” or “Dave”.
SvenTviking personally i think Steve would be a great name for him
Now you're just arguing semantics!
Thought the same and looked to see if someone else mentioned it.
After all, it's only a story...A BEDTIME STORY!
@@steventan2754 Of course it's just a story. That doesn't mean it's okay to have huge plot holes.
I remember reading about it as a kid, the way I recall them describing it was a vaguely humanoid black figure with talons, not an octopus.
This has always been one of my favorite ghost stories The only place I ever heard of so terrifying that one would age incredibly & would flee to ones death fling themselves out windows to escape the horror...
I found this channel 2 weeks ago and I've already seen every vid. You guys are the best.
Was it the book with the Jersey Devil on the cover?
This story has always fascinated me for many years.
I worked opposite there and was forever taking pics of the windows at night.. hoping to catch something. Alas never did.
Thanks for upload 👏🏼
Ahh so freaking excited for a new video!!
Love this channel, I just discovered it last week and have been hooked ever since. I always love a good scary story. Keep up the amazing work.
Was that the one where they showed a blue light under a door? I remember this from that show!
Been waiting for this one. I've had interest in this case since I first heard of it on some British haunted places show.
Did you hear of "50 Berkeley Square" through that book, "Haunted England," by chance?
Kat Alday that’s where I read it I think
Nah, it was some 90s tv program about paranormal places in the UK.
@@BeeLZBeeb - Me too. I read "Haunted England" about 10-13 years ago. I totally eat up all this paranormal phenomena! You have yourself a great life. 😁👍👊fist bump!
@@Mirokuofnite - That's pretty cool, do you happen to remember the name of that particular show? I would love to look it up on TH-cam. Many thanx too you. 😁
I love this story. I've heard it countless times it is one of the most bizarre paranormal event I've ever read
Humanity is sadly becoming a rare commodity nowadays and so every time I see the ember of it, I try to fan the flame. So thank you for your videos (Your content rawks my sawks) and I appreciate you guys as people. Keep up the good work!
The artwork was amazing in this episode. The story itself sounds like a short tale Lovecraft would've written.
I remember reading about this years ago, the story really stuck with me so was chuffed to see you’d uploaded this. Thanks
Finally!!! I been waiting for a new video!! And it’s awesome as always, I really enjoy the artwork and the way you describe every single detail 😍
Was it the one with the Jersey Devil on the cover?
there plenty of haunting stories here in central New York state, check em out. down in New York City there is a small house where survivors of the Titanic were brought. some did not live , the place is haunted to this day
Love you guys! Thank you for your storytelling! Unbiased and thoughtful!
I remember reading about this back when I was in elementary school. A book of real life horrors and ghosts. Good work on this. Always love to see a new video by you all.
1840s London: "Here's a pistol in case of monster."
2019 London:
Oi do you have a "Getting Killed By Monster" loisense bud?
@Stephen Murphy Yet American crime tends to be highest in the large cities with the tightest and most strict gun regs.
😂
Well, Lovecraftian horrors existed during the 1840s.
I have been watching bedtime stories for a few days now and I would just like to say this channel is absolutely brilliant. Thank you guys
I absolutely love your channel! The intro, the drawings, the true stories and of course, the narration! Thank you so much for all your hard work! ☺❤
Major props to the whole B Stories team. Content never dissapoints. A truly unique channel since it's inception. The artwork, research and unbiased narration always manages to inject you straight into any story regardless of how outlandish it may seem.
The sound design and art create an atmosphere that will send a chill down the spine of even the most hardened veterans of dark, mystery or horror stories . Blows my mind that channels like this recieved so little recognition. This team of guys put some seriously hard work and hours into entertaining us again and again while NPC top ten channels and disguised copy cats reel in the cash with little to no effort, truly dissapointing.
Keep up the great work fellas, your fan base loves your work and it will only continue to grow and support you
Lol that bell and pistol story is literally the plot of a Sherlock Holmes story
Now you know where Conan Doyle got it from. He was well known for being interested in the paranormal, it makes sense he would have been aware of this tale.

It's also in "The House and The Brain" by Bulwer-Lytton: www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/17953

How about we give The Nameless Horror of Berkeley Square a name?
I vote for Squidward.
I vote for Swampus.

I prefer O J Squidson
Once again, brilliant stuff guys!
This channel can do no wrong!

Wow...just...WOW! Another excellent story...made a chill go up my spine. Thank you for your excellent work!
I never understand why people leave dislikes for videos on this channel, the quality is fantastic.
Skeptics without a doubt dislike these types of channels.
I'm a skeptic and I like their videos. I personally believe that most of the supernatural occurrences have some reasonable explanation but I still love the way this guys present the story.
@@johndanes2294 interesting. Don't get me wrong, you should never start believing what people tell you, research and look at all the possibilities. But some skeptics are very closed minded. The paranormal can not be real to some. I think skeptics and non skeptics should work together, just imagine the the things that can be solved on this topic.
Always appreciate your willingness to find several sides/views. Always interesting.
Brilliant.

Lol
Ha Ha, I laugh nervously as I Iook back over my shoulder in the darkness of my bedroom at 3am.
I read about this in the mid-70’s in a graphic novel about true ghost stories. This one scared the living hell out of me.
I'd never heard of this story. Wow...now I'm worried about bloodthirsty octopuses lunging out of dark corners at me. 😆 Seriously, great video! It's definitely a favorite.
wasn't this one a real creeper? bed and breakfast anyone? jeez!
#50 Berkeley Square! That was my favorite ghost stories when I was a kid. This is the first time I've heard it since! It's been 30 years! Great video! Subscribed!
As a substitute teacher I used to tell my students a (tamer) version of the nameless horror of Berkeley square if they were good for me. It was one of their favorites.
One of my favourite stories from bedtime stories 💀🤍
11:30 Interesting how we have an account of parts of this story that no one alive would know. Martin was supposedly still asleep, but we have an account of what Blunden did during that time, even though he was dead when Martin returned?
lol
Thanks for posting this. It was always a favourite of mine as a kid and it never gets enough coverage.
question , if the 2nd sailor was asleep until waking to see the 1st sailor (who was killed during the incident) being attacked , then how can we possibly know what the 1st sailors actions were before the 2nd awoke ??.
Could of seen that the poker was moved and from there figure out what was the most likely scenario to happen.
exactly.
The long wait is over. Finally a new story before going to sleep. Keep it up.👍
Yes I have been waiting to see this all week thank you
Fell asleep listening to this last night and boy did I have nightmares, woke up soaked in sweat......Thanks Bedtime Stories.
WOOHOO! one every week from now on please guys??
Glad to see the Horror get some attention! I've been interested in this story for a long time. It's genuinely creepy.
I read about this as a kid. Terrified me back then.
It's cool that title of this video is so similliar to how Lovecraft titled his stories, like The Dunwich Horror, Thing on the Doorstep, etc. Very nice!

Brilliant investigation, narration, and illustration. Thank you for the top notch content. I will be contributing to keep the channel alive 😉
I'm unsatisfied with not knowing what the root cause is
Wow, this was amazing, loved the eerie narrative and the accompanying pictures. :) I think I'm gonna love this channel. :)
