The more precisely you describe a problem, or an emotion, the greater ability you have to do something about it. In this video you’ll learn the difference between stress, anxiety and worry because knowing the difference can give you a ton of tools to change your relationship with all three.
Anxiety is, in essence, your reaction to the perception of being in danger. Especially physical danger, so if you were the roof of a skyscraper, your brain would perceive the potential danger and trigger the limbic system to send out a super loud warning to you in the form of thoughts and physical sensations of anxiety.
    Anxiety Serves a Function
Emotions aren’t just “bad things that happen to you”, emotions serve a function. I go into depth on the function of emotions in my “How to Process Emotions course”. But the emotion of anxiety is meant to help keep us safe from danger, to motivate us to move away from the edge of cliffs, or to stay away from venomous snakes and spiders.
And to make emotions powerful motivating forces, they aren’t just in our mind, they’re in our bodies too. Stress, Anxiety and Worry aren’t the same thing, they’re three different aspects of our Fear response. And when we know the difference, we can tailor different skills and tools to work through them. Just like with people, when we know their names, we can learn how to relate to them.

My main worry was worrying about getting anxious. Not much else seems to bother me. The anxious feeling is so powerful I’d avoid situations where I think it may occur.

See this was always my concern too. I have a hard time looking at anxiety as a core emotion to respond to. Aren’t we responding to fear, like isn’t fear the core emotion of anxiety? There may not be a threat present, but our body thinks there is.

I completely understand how overpowering anxiety can be, and the way it leads to avoiding certain situations. It's a common challenge, but there are effective ways to manage it. If you're open to it, we can explore strategies together to help you cope with anxiety and regain control over those situations. Remember, you're not alone in this, and seeking support can make a significant difference.

It’s funny, because I came across this video while looking for some advice. When I started the video, my anxiety was at a 7 or 8….rough day. When the “anxiety video” started, it actually made me laugh and within a minute, my anxiety was down to about a 2. What they were doing was so ridiculously, stupidly, unnecessarily dangerous that it made me remember that I’m good, I’m stressed out, but I’m ok…and I’m certainly not those dinguses.

My anxiety was at a zero at a beginning. After watching the videos, I thought it was still at a zero. I don’t feel empathy and have a hard time being in touch with my somatic sensations. I had thought of worry as being thoughts with no emotion behind them, anxiety as being thoughts with worry behind them, and stress as when those feelings actually do get intense enough for me to feel in my body. But since you said worry was part of anxiety, I realized that since I had a couple thoughts of worry pop up in my head while watching the videos, I’d rate my anxiety going up from zero to one. Really good psychoeducation you’re doing! I look forward to watching the next part

I started off this video as already having anxiety but wanting to get away from specific thoughts for a moment, so it was at around a 7. But after watching the videos, it rose to 9. I felt really scared and wanted to turn away from the screen in hopes that I wouldn't be able to see if someone was falling. But yes this video did help a lot in giving me more awareness of anxiety and how to deal with it just by allowing myself to feel it and describe it instead of always trying to avoid it altogether. Hoping to learn more from this anxiety course and slowly but surely get better!

Anxiety & nerve thoughts are like being in a one way tunel. Come out of it, and go in a better rail track of being practive and sorring your fears and worry. Worry is the fuel she said. Mine was all physical feelings and tension. 6 months its took me to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Its hard but dont let it master you. Tell yourself off and also praise yourself for overciming fear and emotiions. Do slow exposure therapy, play music its helped me a lot. And Emma of course...she's great. Dont avoid yr sensations, just do. Change your thought pattern. Talk it through. Write it all down. You will get there but dont rush it ok, it takes time.

It is a natural and healthy response when it isn't chronic in nature. Stress and anxiety are signs that our body is trying to heal. Well they are chronic, happening all the time, it is a sign that we need to change our lives in some way.

For a lot of people just talking about anxiety does nothing for them because many around the world have gone through very serious mental/emotional trauma. So, they end up creating a wall of emotional protection called getting very nervous. That is the way of the body releasing the stress of anxiety. Unfortunately, doctors just numb you down with medication which never fixes the problem.

I’m an artist and photographer…I was interested in the visual effects of the images that were at the top of the skyscraper…so I think I was mostly visually captivated and also viewing on my phone vertically so the video was even smaller and I wasn’t very immersed in the reality of the scenario…also I knew that I was going to watch something stressful so I think my mind/body was more prepared…i probably only went to a 5 tops and that was toward the end where the man on the bike was over the ledge. I do have chronic stress and an anxiety disorder…along with ADHD and my executive functioning challenges do often instigate anxiety which can lead to overwhelm and at times a kind of a meltdown of sorts… I have been working with my doctor to medicate my symptoms effectively… I enjoyed this content. I’ve been working on my body awareness when I’m triggered and my joining group therapy has really helped with processing my childhood trauma and understanding what’s going on in my body and mind when I’m experiencing anxiety. Thanks!

My anxiety was around a 4 and it stayed more or less the same? Like some people said, I didn't quite connect with that experience. I did experience a bit of worry and felt a bit incredulous. I love your examples/material/analogies and the structure of the course videos! Really insightful, distinguishing between the three concepts is a game changer for sure. Will apply the last exercise to my current feelings, sensations and thoughts. Thanks Emma!
PD: Bought the course on your birthday weekend, which actually falls on the same weekend as mine, so happy belated bday to you and thanks for the deal! Very satisfied with my purchase, I know I will be making good use of the course even with the little time I have at hand. 💛

For me anxiety represents feeling of danger that I'm not going to make it. The "it" Could be concrete task, social, health, or life/death scenario. The feeling is usually lifted if I get rest or change perspective. Basically tackle the two underlying causes of anxiety. Thanks for making it really clear.

My anxiety is situational, it isn’t something that is ongoing, in every aspect of my life - which I’m grateful for! I’m at a low point right now, I’m on a stress leave from work. Been off for two months and it’s been extended. My manager is a huge trigger and I am not sure I will ever be able to get to the point that I will be able to work for that same manager.

When I’m in fight/flight mode, I have a lot of intrusive thoughts that play on a loop, to the point where I become fearful of my thoughts. Also have some OCD which causes thoughts to be extra sticky. It’s a lot of work to constantly remind myself that not all thoughts are true, to sit and meditate, dial down the messiness of those thoughts and calm down my nervous system (as calm as it can be! Lol). Your videos have been a huge help!

    anxious (adj.)
1620s, "greatly troubled by uncertainties," from Latin anxius "solicitous, uneasy, troubled in mind" (also "causing anxiety, troublesome"), from angere, anguere "to choke, squeeze," figuratively "to torment, cause distress" (from PIE root *angh- "tight, painfully constricted, painful").

Although the videos of humans look terrifying, to me it shows people who have made decisions to experience thrill and excitement. Which is positive. The unknown, uncertain, lost feelings we have inside us are far more terrifying than most dangerous things. And it doesn't go away 24/7.

I am almost 60 and over the past three months i have been enduring an insurmountable amount of anxiety i have lost at least 30 pounds in weight really fast. Alot of the time I am on the verge of absolute panic. I am totally over whelmed by the thought of being homeless even though that is not on the immediate horizon. At the same time I can not help but be fascinated by what's happening to me. My senses are heightened i am totally aware of my surroundings there is a part of me that is soo lonely it hurts me and makes me feel very venerable and i want someone to tell me that they will always be here for me and the love me but but I have cut off most in my life i am alone and the solitude gives me comfort.

Main takeaways: 4:47: Stress on the short term is not bad for you. Chronic stress/anxiety is bad for you, but it can be treated. Don’t try to avoid short term anxiety, because it can make it worse. Accept it as a normal part of life; a normal reaction to short term dangers.
5:23: Stress is the physiological activation of our nervous system; it’s what happens in our body. Worry is the thinking part of stress. Worry involves the future or the unknown.
6:12: Anxiety is the intersection between stress and worry. It is fear of future events.
    10:07: Steps of emotion management:
#1: Be aware of how stress shows up/feels in your body and in your thoughts.
#2: Don’t judge your anxiety. Observe it and describe it with words (uncomfortable; difficult, etc)
Exercise: rate your stress level before and after watching the stressful video at 1:06; notice what you feel in your body as you are watching it.

Small suggestion that works for me. When you feel anxious close your eyes and think back to a moment of pure joy and happiness like when you were a small child running around with other children in tow, the mixture of peace and bliss you felt. See how wonderful it makes you feel. You will even have that Buddha-like smile of contentment and feel-goodness. This is your true natural Godly state. This is the best meditation there is. Love you.

My initial anxiety level was 2 or 3, then after the video it went up to 8? maybe.
So yeah, it's true, I'm overthinking things a lot. I tend to see the negative side of things, and it deterred me from taking actions to build the life that I want. I even started to think that it's not good to want the things that I want.
And it's not just about thoughts. The feeling that's always present in the background of your mind, or the world, it's somehow made me stifled, fearful. And now I have an inkling of what is actually going on.

    Okay, here I go.
First, I rated my anxiety at a 4. Then I watched the video clip of people dangling from skyscrapers, and rated my anxiety at an 8. I thought "Ohhhh my god nooo why would you do that ahhhh!!!" I felt butterflies in my stomach and my palms began to sweat profusely (I am talking, dripping with sweat for the next 15 minutes). Emotionally, I felt thoughtless like I had been frozen watching them. I felt this in my guts and my hands, which are still clammy as I type this...

Anxiety is an expectation that something bad is about to happen. This can be hard wired into our nervous system by bad experiences in our past. When we see this as a leftover from our past it loses its power over us. A daily exercise that really helps is to sit quietly for a few minutes with eyes closed and picture this feeling as a dark cloud that drifts away and disappears.

Dear Emma is it possible to make a video about feelings that block you while you have anxiety and want to go outside, for example with anxiety you feel so much things you get nervous you feel stressed, you get overwhelmed, how can you deal with those feelings , so even when you go outside you just stay calm and you dont get panic thoughts, anxiety is all about feelings i think its the core. We get anxiety because we feel so much . Im not sure but for me its like i am stuck in my head all the time always feeling thinking how i feel thats what cause anxiety.
