I personally love 'only a northern song' its one of my favourite sequences in yellow submarine and I love George Harrison's (and the other Beatles) sense of humour
So handsome and such a gentleman. As long as the Beatles are remembered you will also be remembered because you were part of it, a very important part.
@@jamescarter3196 You are right. George Martin was an experimenter in the studio and made quite a few innovations. I remember I couldn't hear a Beatle song in stereo; only two tracks of: "She's a Woman" until I used a mono-aural approach and then realized it was a recording made IN FRONT OF THE BAND AS A WHOLE. Regards
He'll be remembered for his piano-playing alone - on "Rock And Roll Music," "In My Life" and others - not to mention all of his other contributions. His facilitation of John Lennon's ideas for "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Tomorrow Never Knows" are legendary.
Yeah the 5th was Epstein. Then Sutcliffe was the 6th. Yoko was the 7th. Then Eric Clapton was the 8th. And Mal Evans the 9th. Then MAYBE George was the 10th.
@29Feb sober - Epstien is an excellent Manager and packaged the band in it's early days, and is very important in the band finances. Creatively it is George Martin who helped made the Beatles music. He is the key musical arranger. Mentored them in their musicality and on how they play. Helped them in their compositions. Most of BG orchestral works in their song are composed by him. The music you hear in their albums now is heavily influenced and worked by George Martin. So artistically and musically, George Martin IS the fifth Beatle.
To be a 14 year old when The Beatles changed the world. appreciating the time of all that, was for me the most fortunate time to be a fan of pop music! Those of us who really love the music of The Beatles appreciate the fact that Sir George Martin played such a key part in the band's sound and of their phenomenal success!
Let´s face it: The Best Band, the best songs, the most beautiful harmonies, outstanding creativenes AND the Best Producer, all together The Beatles!!!!!
Martin was very wrong. As long as we remember The Beatles, we'll remember George Martin. And Only A Northern Song is great. Always loved that song. And now that I know that George Harrison wanted it on Sgt. Pepper, it makes me wonder where on Sgt. Pepper it would have been. (I do the same thing thing with Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane. Thinking where they would fit as to keep the album flowing. lol)
Brilliant content. Sir George was the FAB four's Professor X 👍 Lennon and McCartney as the first hand song writers were the ones doing the sketches while sir George Martin dazzled it with amazing colours to conclude a Work of Art. 🙏👍✌️❤️😊👏👏👏👏👏
I believe that the Beatle phenomenon was one of those situations that comes together in a perfect sense . Lennon , McCartney and Harrison , along with Pete Best were the gemination . Brian Epstein then enters and his belief and drive brought them to George Martin . Pete is let go and Ringo Starr balances out The Beatles as a group . But another part of the perfect puzzle were the engineers at Abbey Road Studios . The engineers always got such great mixes from the recordings and right from the start . I remember very clearly how many of records of other bands were not mixed very well and the recordings sounded amateurish in comparison . George Martin was such an important part of being able to make those outstanding songs bloom and always in a new , and so very creative way . The Beatles changed the world as we knew it . But if George Martin and his engineers had never been a part of the Beatle vehicle I seriously doubt that the impact might never have come about . I believe it had to happen as it did . Guess you could look at it as a perfect storm .
George Martin was the Producer for The Beatles. I mean you can have a team of great players, but you need a great coach to bring out the best in those players. That was George Martinis greatest gift to humanity. Without George’s Classical stuff you would never have had Revolver onwards.. RIP to John, George and George.
I, like probably most of us here, inherited my love and admiration for The Beatles from my parents, so they were always around and in watching film after film about them and the sort it's absolutely undeniable the role Mr. Martin played in all of it. At least, I was well aware of it and I've always held him in such a special place in my heart...also, he was so freakn' handsome and brilliant and kind, just an amazing man! We do remember you, George, always, and with so much love!
Mr. Martin, thanks for helping to create, populate, and decorate my fantastic musical world as a child. I am a professional symphony orchestra musician today, and you helped to give me this wonderful, music-filled life I love so much. I hope you one day will read this. Seriously: thank you.
'Only a Northern Song' has to be absolutely one of my favorite Beatles songs of all time. That and 'It's All Too Much', Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' and 'A Day In The Life'. I love their psychedelic work the most.
Nice piece about the perfect producer for the Fabs. Despite his status, I always thought how hurt he must have been with events later on. For example, Macca's sodding off with Mike Leander when, for once G.M was otherwise occupied; or the Phil Spector involvement towards the end; later after the split, George Martin's input was belittled, particularly by John, probably down to a mixture of ego and however he was feeling about The Beatles at the time. Without George Martin I do don't think their leaps of quality, from one LP to another, would have been so great. Thanks again for this latest video!
I love "Only A Northern Song." What's not to love? I love the noisy bits. That period of George's where he wasn't necessarily enamored playing much guitar on his songs - Love You To, Within You Without You, Only A Northern Song, Blue Jay Way...Long, Long, Long maybe? - they're good songs.
Had the pleasure of going to a theater in Manhattan in the mid 90s, the entire evening was George Martin standing on stage talking about his history with the Beatles. Loved every minute! After, outside I was delighted to get a big hug from Sid Bernstein in front of my friends who I had told years before Sid took my partner's and I to lunch where he'd taken John Lennon years before... George Martin was an astoundingly good producer. And having been there throughout the years when the Beatles put out each of their landmark albums means he will be remembered for as long as they will.
George Martin, you are in integral part Beatles. Each Beatle brought something unique to their sound, and you bound it together in a way that really pushed them beyond the sum if the parts. Thank you for that!
When I was fourteen I used to play In My Life on a guitar as it was my favorite Beatles song and the best part in it for me was its solo. Later In My Life I found out that this particular solo was written by George Martin on a harpsichord when the members went for a short break during the recording session. When I started following the bits and pieces of the music making of The Beatles, I started recognizing the magical touches of George Martin all over their production. Now that I know more about their music making I know for sure that their legacy would not have lived like forever without the input of George Martin. Just a simple example is Eleanor Rigby, Yesterday , For The Benefit of Mr Kite, Strawberry Fields Forever and many other remarkable Beatles song would not be what they are if it wasnt for George Martins musical genius
Really great review. Another nice picture of G. Martin’s role. I personally grateful to him for continuing to release wonderful Beatles’ records even after their break down. The excellent job his son now taking over. Some facts from this video explain why it is possible.
I cried all the way towards the end of your video knowing the magic that made possible all Beatles music couldn't be reached any other time. George was indeed the fifth Beatle.
George Martin’s innovations and technique’s like playing a piano slower than the song in a lower key and then speeding up the recording to match the key that the music was truly in were instrumental in giving the Beatles their unique sound. Martin’s special know-how and recording abilities catapulted the Beatles to another level that they would have never accomplished without him. He also convinced them to use orchestration in their music early on producing classics like Yesterday and Eleanor Rigby. His multitalented skills and knowledge were the integral components in creating what we know as the Beatles. Without him the finished product would not have been as complete.
Excellent tribute! I have long believed that George Martin’s contribution to the Beatles has been greatly overlooked, and underestimated where it is recognized. Without him, the Beatles would probably have stayed kinda-sorta the 1960s equivalent of the Clash: A clever, but “scrappy little band” - versatile, but with nowhere near the depth of experience, and experiences, the Beatles did give us. You cited many superb examples, but there are also the strings behind Eleanor Rigby - a little more dramatic than those in Yesterday - and Martin’s unleashing of the Beatles’ creativity upon the field of Musique Concrete in Revolution no. 9.
Stu Sutcliffe. He's not on any Beatles recordings, but he was a huge early influence on them (John especially) in their aesthetic. He was the first to adopt the "Beatles haircut," for example, and may have even been the one who came up with the name "Beatles" (people argue about that to this day).
Thank you for bringing up Giles, at first I was thinking (whenever I saw his credit on remasters)psh trying to live up to your dad eh (I know quite a cynical attitude) but you changed it by bringing up what he did to help his father. Thank you. You always seem to have such great videos.
I remember sitting in my bedroom for hours on end, every single day, from 6th grade when i started piano lessons, obsessing over how to record myself playing and singing, then trying to layer harmonies between an old two-cassette boom box... the frustrations of not remembering to switch the tapes from the play to record side and recording over things, then discovering the loss of quality with each generation of layering... the throwing of cassettes and tantrums of trying to learn to record. My Mormon parents would 'punish' me by locking the piano and hiding my LPs/cassettes because they thought i was obsessed. (Probably not wrong there.) :P But i'd read about "All You Need is Ears" and when i went to college in rural Idaho (Mormon college), i found it mispriced on a clearance bin for $1.00 (the sticker was for another title, but they'd priced it that way) :) I lived on $20 a week for food, books, personal items, everything, so i figured if they rang it up and i could get it for a dollar, it would be a 'sign'. So i took it to the counter, they let me buy it, and i went home that night and fell in to the CLEAREST and most technically accurate-yet-accessible explanation of EVERYthing I'd been experiencing, hearing, and wanting to know. My ears have always been my strongest sense, but George Martin taught me how to use them AND how to use my mind to augment and clarify my understanding. I have a photo of him on my piano and i smile at it every time i sit down to play. :) I'm not big on God, but God bless George Martin.
As a teen I discovered when trying to bounce multi track recordings between two cassette players that they didn't run at exactly the same speed, which meant having to tune the guitar and bass to the cassette player.

I didn't know he was the Beatles orchestra connection. That was new to them and it is strongly associated with them, and made their already great songs much more enjoyable. Also if was new to rock music.Very informative background on George Martin.
VIDEO APPRECIATED. I was aware that George Martin had an academic musical background. His SOPHISTICATION was, no doubt, VERY significant in their studio success. I didn't know much else about him, though. SIR GEORGE MARTIN, rest well; you will NEVER be forgotten.
0:45 My dear goodness, what an astonishingly gorgeous refined young man! That's beyond belief!!! Not only was he stunning but also such a gentleman, so noble, poised, rational, hardworking and talented. My respect and admiration go to you, Mr Martin!
George Martin was a God send for the Beatles. Without him, they may have never happened....ever. He encouraged them and enhanced their music by making it sound professional. I ran into him just before Steely Dan recorded Aja at The Producer's Workshop in Hollywood in the spring of 1977. He was coming in just as I was about to leave after delivering the set of drums to Steve Gadd for the session that day. Perhaps he had been called in to help out .....who knows....but it was wonderful seeing him in the flesh that day.
It would be impossible to remember the Beatles and not remember George Martin! Absolutely impossible! He was a genius!!! RIP Sir George! You will be remembered throughout all time!!!!
George single-handedly pulled the Beatles from being a rock band into being something undefinable. Even in the early days, besides their amazing songwriting, it was his arrangements that separated them from bands like the Stones, the Zombies, and the Dave Clark 5. R.I.P. Sir George, you will always be remembered for your greatness...
Very well done. He wrote all the stuff in the background that most people don't hear, but I heard it gorge, and I will remember your contributions, which are as equally good as John, Paul, George or ringo
George Martin will always be remembered as a great producer of the world’s most incredible band. I salute George for the fantastic music he helped produce with The Beatles and for giving the world and generations to come, great music that will live on forever !!!
Absolutely.. George Martin helped polish and extend The Beatles music to heights unforeseen... and Geoff as engineer, made the unique combination of a critical lightening strike propelling rock into the modern era.
I think of the Beatles and George Martin often as I perform many Beatles songs on my piano.I add a Jazz/Latin twist to attract contemporary listeners, in order to keep this valuable Beatles legacy alive. To me they will always be the best in musical revolution and personality. 😎🦘
George martin deserves to be recognize. He is a great musician and a great contributor to the beauty of their songs. It is but right to call him the 5th beatle. RIP george
Everyone with even a passing interest in The Beatles should watch that documentary. It's about George Martin, not just The Beatles, so it gives you valuable information on where he came from and how his experience helped shape the modern sound. Unlike the lads, his life wasn't just all Beatles all the time, he was working with many other projects through the 60s.
You most definitely will be remembered George Martin, we will all make sure that our children's children and so forth know who you were and what your magnificent contribution to popular music is.
I've always been a big. Beatles fan because of their charm and great writing abilities. They were prolific and consistently stretched beyond their comfort zone. Also, they respected the ones who csme before them..
Your vids are brilliant. I hope all the work and research you put into these come back as blessings to you. As far as GM...what a stroke of luck that Decca said no to the Beatles. Who knows what the product would have been under the thumb of an entirely different Producer. God bless the amazing Mr Martin and his contributions to the greatest band in history.
Beyond his wonderful creative talent, what George Martin appears to bring to me (as an American) is a dash of ...the generation we call 'the greatest generation'. I'm not comfortable using the expression 'stiff upper lip' as I'm not sure exactly how it's used, but he goes back to a time before the Beatles. In fact, before WW2 actually. He adds a timeless, yet somehow quintessentially English element to the Beatles. He may not have appreciated them immediately, but he sure did over time. Understanding him is now the next level of understanding Beatles music.
how can anyone 'know' the beatles and not understand that he was the fifth...i've thought of him that way since orchestrations started popping up on their songs...really GOOD orchestrations...and i'm thinking...'well...if they coulda done this beFORE, they probably would've...so what's this george martin guy all about?' i knew a lot of the stories...but there was CERtainly enough that i DIDn't know to force me to come here and do something i don't usually do...which is comment...but you folks did SUCH a good job putting this together...i was commenting on the editing/jumps from and to all the right places to make the maximum use of the video time...so yes...thank you for your time/effort...it was SO good i might actually follow up to see what you folks do...thanks again...
Thanks for watching everyone! Hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it. George Martin was awesome.

(Probably not wrong there.) :P
But i'd read about "All You Need is Ears" and when i went to college in rural Idaho (Mormon college), i found it mispriced on a clearance bin for $1.00 (the sticker was for another title, but they'd priced it that way) :) I lived on $20 a week for food, books, personal items, everything, so i figured if they rang it up and i could get it for a dollar, it would be a 'sign'.
I'm not big on God, but God bless George Martin.
As a teen I discovered when trying to bounce multi track recordings between two cassette players that they didn't run at exactly the same speed, which meant having to tune the guitar and bass to the cassette player.
George is the fifth Beatle, no question and no doubt about it. Love this man. Thanks for the wonderful video!
Zero dislikes.. that's what I like to see at video like this. George was awesome! He IS the fifth beatle
Sir George Martin was a fantastic producer he truly was the fifth Beatles they all must have gotten along great he will be missed he was one of the greatest producers of all time!! rip sir George Martin we love you in that great gig in the sky🤘🤘🤘🇱🇷🇱🇷🇱🇷❤️❤️❤️🇬🇧🇬🇧🎸🎸🎸maiden manic up the irons🎸🎸🎸🇬🇧🇬🇧❤️❤️🇱🇷🇱🇷🤘🤘
George Martin will NEVER be forgotten....He will remain the father of modern day recording and producing, forever!
I didn't know he was the Beatles orchestra connection. That was new to them and it is strongly associated with them, and made their already great songs much more enjoyable. Also if was new to rock music.Very informative background on George Martin.
I shed a tear at the end for the passing of Mr. Martin. Truly, a kind, fatherly man. The world is a lonelier place without him.
Couldn't agree more. All five have left their mark on the songs they'll be playing "many years from now".
For someone to put up with the young Beatles...he IS A GOD!! Thank you for your love of vision.
Just discovered your channel. Thanks for these. RIP George Martin
Loved only a northern song by George, another facet to their genius.
3:17 - Tape Engineer Chris Neil just might be the very FIRST Beatles fan - BEFORE George Martin was!?
The mind 'reels' :)
Hahhaha nice thought
This is great. Thanks for sharing. George was right about the tie. Cheers!
Awesome video ! Thank you.
Beautiful mate, loved it👍
Great video, great great great video! Loved the conclusion
Never forgotten, and always thoughtful ...
"I'm warning you with peace and love"
The video is great, but that piece of Ringo editing is pretty poor !
RIP george
Love love love George Martin. The documentary "Produced by George Martin" on Amazon prime is lovely.
You could tell what an intelligent and gentle man he was in all of his interviews. He will be missed.
Sir George Martin to give him his correct title musical genius
I've always been a big. Beatles fan because of their charm and great writing abilities. They were prolific and consistently stretched beyond their comfort zone. Also, they respected the ones who csme before them..
George Martin will always be a record producer role model for me.
Listened to your album... really great stuff hope there’s more on the way! It honestly felt and sounded like a beatles album, excellent job!!
Interesting. Agreed about "Northern Song." It's terrific.
A true genius, his input into the success of Beatles catalogue immeasurable. Its a true shame how George and John treated him towards the end.
The 5th Beatle. His contribution is so under appreciated. The Beatles wouldn't have sounded as magnificent without him.
hard to believe a channel of this quality does not have more subscribers.
how can anyone 'know' the beatles and not understand that he was the fifth...i've thought of him that way since orchestrations started popping up on their songs...really GOOD orchestrations...and i'm thinking...'well...if they coulda done this beFORE, they probably would've...so what's this george martin guy all about?' i knew a lot of the stories...but there was CERtainly enough that i DIDn't know to force me to come here and do something i don't usually do...which is comment...but you folks did SUCH a good job putting this together...i was commenting on the editing/jumps from and to all the right places to make the maximum use of the video time...so yes...thank you for your time/effort...it was SO good i might actually follow up to see what you folks do...thanks again...
Thank you for your film..so revealing!
George Martin will not be forgotten. Thank you, George!
Very interesting. He helped shaped them and bring their ideas to life. He's an important fixture to the Beatles and music's legacy....❤️
I’ve never bought into the idea of a 5th Beatle but I do consider George to be the greatest producer of all time.
