I fully agree on the their history and their lackluster skincare and make BUT my favorite scent ever is Mademoiselle. I've had a bottle consistently for over a decade.
As for fragrances, Chanel has also maintained a great level of quality in the formula, and consistently. They have nearly no misses in the fragrance range, which cannot be said about other brands like (unfortunately) YSL or Dior, which just put out cheap, easy to sell junk with ever new new new versions that will disappear at the end of the summer. Which is a shame, since those were incredible maisons with amazing scents (think M7, first oud perfume, Diorissimo, a perfect lily of the valley, Kouros, maybe the most sensual fragrance ever, Dune, a strange perfume that makes you travel), though thankfully they still sell those legacy fragrances
I think Chanel may be the only one that hasn’t changed the fragrance formulas over the years as well, I don’t know because I’m not into the fragrances as much as I am anything else, but I was under the impression they were the only one that hasn’t changed any of the scents since the very beginning, except for making the manufacturing a little cheaper
@@underskinYT they've had to change certain ingredients due to the IFRA rules on allergens (for instance), just like everybody else, but they've been far less impacted than others. @@darlahays2471 The whole selling point, in its day, was that it smelled artificial. That was the innovative bit. The standard fragrances of the day were single ingredient florals (rose water, orange blossom water), or were blends of distinguishable natural notes. No5 was outstanding because it did not smell natural, but also because it smelled 'like itself', it was so well blended that you couldn't actually distinguish the individual elements that went into it. This was a time when 'chemical' and 'artificial' were things to get exited about, because they were new. It seems weird today, because of our current love of all things natural, in ingredient lists and aesthetics, but people of that era had only known the natural, so synthetic and lab-made were 'fire emoji' marketing terms. I personally really like No5

Really educational video! If Chanel, in 2023, still does not have a diverse range of skin tones catered for in its make up collections, it's likely not by accident.
the main question I have remains unanswered by this video: how the hell did they save ther reputation after Coco Chanel had been exposed as a Nazi? Something must have have happened in the 60s and 70s??? Also I find it deeply disturbing how you will find countless pictures of Coco Chanel in French language schools (been to one myself last year) as if she was some sort of national hero. Are the french simply ignorant about this or do they just not care (possibly because there are still strong antisemitic/racist tendencies - especially across the wealthier popluation??)
The truth is its not as widely known outside fans that have looked into it. The brothers and Karl worked exceptionally hard to rebrand her as an icon of fashion innovation and sweep her views under the rug when he came in, and clearly it really worked
There was a musical in 1969 called Coco which earned Katherine Hepburn a Tony nomination. There was movie in 2009 called Coco before Chanel. Recently there has been a museum exhibition on Chanel. I believe the exhibition covered her collaboration with the Nazis and her horrendous behavior during WWII. I think she appeals to popular culture because she was a highly successful woman with a colorful life.
2:47 not sure how Chanel wasn't duped here... She already had Chanel N°5, it was already popular, so why was her share of the new company only 10%?... She was right to be unhappy with her share. I understand the Wertheimers financed everything and basically this was a new brand that they made successful. But I don't blame her for becoming bitter about it. Her actions afterwards though were absolutely appalling...
I’m so glad you enjoyed the channel, thank you so much for watching. The title is in reference to the fact that most of the Chanel products throughout the history have been private labelled and priced up because of the brand name💕
There is one product you forgot, which was a creation with Heidi Morawetz: the black red lipstick and nail enamel. I remember its launch in the Nineties, and it made such an impact that it was frequently sold out and had waiting lists.
The Jews of Europe are also 'White', they are just not 'Aryan', as defined by the Nazis. By the way, they rarely used words like 'Christian' or 'White' to denote non-Jews in occupied lands in Western Europe. They did use the term 'Aryan', which was quickly made even more meaningless than it had already been, as it was sometimes applied to non-Jewish ( ie Catholic) Poles, who were often also considered non-Aryan as (in the Nazi way of thinking) subhuman Slavs. Anti-Semites in the United States before World War II would often refer to Jews as 'not White', but Nazi Europe had its own tropes.
Christian White people aren't what Hitler meant by Arian. The Arian race aren't completely human. It's worth researching. WWII was to kill as many White people as possible. The Zionists didn't care who won the war, only that White people died. Oh, and also to get Jews to Israel. The Zionist Jews lived, it was the antizionist ones who died. In order to escape Germany, they had to lie about it.
The first viral Chanel beauty trend was the lipstick color "Vamp" in the mid 90s. Karl actually did the following rtw collection based on a new version of Vamp. He reintroduced it in silver and of course it was a huge flop!
There were celebrity fragrances before Chanel and very many in between Chanel and Elizabeth Taylor, a lot of the perfumeries that became commercial became commercial with blends that were originally consigned as bespoke fragrances for royalty or socialites - the celebrities of the day so original perfumes were marketed as celebrity fragrances. But if we are talking about traditional celebrities Elizabeth Taylor was not the first celebrity line post Chanel and designers weren't celebrities back then any more than the socialites were when perfume became commercial. Cher had a scent in 1987, there were celebrity fragrances before then.
Youre completely right, yes, the only thing I dosagree with was that Coco wasnt a celebrity, or that designeds werent celebrities because they very much were, they were put in magazines and even on TV on quiz shows. In my Schiaparelli video on my fashion channel you can see actual clips of Elsa on TV if youd like. But yeah, very interesting history of celebrity perfumes all around
@@underskinYT I was just saying Coco wasn't any more of a celebrity than the original aristocracy that commercial perfumes were based on their bespoke perfumes. I was attempting to say that perfume was always based on celebrity to be commercialized.
They also aligned with her personal anti-semitic beliefs. Obviously idk if she knew the extent of their evil, but she definitely wanted to support them and use them to further her own wallet, yeah

I remember being a teenager and saving up for their Rouge Noir nail polish. I still love Chanel makeup, I can’t help it. Edit: I also saved up for her skincare around the same time. The cream caused a massive reaction, I think my skin doesn’t tolerate so much fragrance in a face product. Never tried anything since then.
I heard that Nivea Germany is the good one, not the same than the Nivea US, UK, Spain😮...are they using a different formula depending on where you live, climate etc.?

Seeing and hearing this makes me think that J Galliano was trying to do the same w his antiemetic tantrum in 2010. Maybe there is a long term plan to install him. I think VV will find her stride there because the house has such broad codes in accessories and wardrobe staples for enough people that her market is already there (I’m passionate too)
Oh Im sure financially she will be fine for a good while, Chanel is Chanel, itll do well with or without her. But when they lose creative credibility, the fall will come from the top down, theyll notice and then kick her out ruining her career (at least imo)
Per your own video….. they weaseled money out of her…. That’s the extent of her “anti semicism” …. She tried to weasel it back. Yet they knew even when unfavorably seen, her name still has cache so it was continually used.
A couple other people said this in the comments and it makes so much sense for his brand. Maybe Ill do a JOG cosmetics video one day bcs I adore the companys design perspective for fashion and Id like to learn about the cosmetics side
Chanel cosmetics aren’t great at all .. and the skincare is ridiculous. Fragrant substances are In there, which makes the skincare potentially irritating. Also there are no cutting edge technology ingredients in there that are proven to work (superficially of course like all skincare). Better use products for a comparable price (or cheaper ) with ingredients that are actually working. Beauty TH-camrs like Caroline Hirons are great sources of knowledge. Some of the perfumes are great though - especially the private line
@@underskinYT yes sensitive skin likely tells you immediately these products are no good (which is a blessing in disguise). I fully agree on the their history and their lackluster skincare and make BUT my favorite scent ever is Mademoiselle. I've had a bottle consistently for over a decade.
It sells very well, must have a huge fan base for sure
Yours is an absolutely wonderful channel. Thoughtfully researched and edited. Am glad to have discovered you, and am a happy subscriber. :)
Thank you so much! Im so glad you enjoyed :)

Tried a few items out of Chanel makeup line and hated every single one of them. Considering the pricing I was hugely disappointed. Never looked back
If its not for you its not for you 🤷
As for fragrances, Chanel has also maintained a great level of quality in the formula, and consistently.
I don't know if it's just that their noses have done a better job at compensating, or if their fragrances weren't as susceptible to change anyways, but they definitely suffered less than say Dior, or (RIP) YSL Opium
@@ambergris5705what they done to my two favourites….opium and rieve gauche breaks my heart
love your voice and clear video organization!
Thank you so much 🙌 I get so self conscious about my voice so this is so nice ❤️🔥
I came upon your channels today, and I just binge-watched a ton of your videos. Great job on this channel and your understitch channel ~ really smart, informative and interesting. Bravo! 👏👏👏😘
Oh and with the S channelSSSSSSS thank you so much 🙌🙌 Im so glad you enjoy my videos so much, new videos are coming this weekend too, a great time to find 🤌🤌🤌
Chanel no 5 is literally the nastiest smelling perfume out there.
Its so unique that I think it helps it really stand out
It's nothing like the original. Not the one my Mom wore. And certainly not the one that Marilyn Monroe wore..it's too artificial and cloying.
I like it. It smells so completely different to everything else I have and the man enjoys it
😂😂
I personally really like No5
The fact that it turns out that the Coco was a nasty human being and a user of men makes me regret all the No5's I bought
for my mother in the past.
Well, if it makes you feel any better, little of that money went into her pocket 😂
Hello! love the video. I'm a Fashion student I followed both understitch, and this channel and your videos help a lot with research for my work. I would love to see a video about Tom Ford on both channel! Since he's now will be leaving his brand, what do you think Estee Launder will do with Tom Ford. Thank you!!
I love Tom Ford, I definitely want to do a video on him, but I think his cosmetics may stay exactly the same, are they licensed anyway? He chooses the perfumes, but I think the manufacturing and everything is licensed with Estee Lauder so his role is choose the perfume and conceptualise the concept and then leaves Estee Lauder to do the manufacturing, distribution, promotion and everything, could be wrong though? I know you know more than me on this
@@underskinYT Yes, Estee Lauder own the Tom Ford beauty, but without Tom Ford presents at the brand there are some skeptical of how everything will turn out after 2023 as he will step away. (Hopefully nothing change much to his fragrance line because I love them!)
Do you know how much influence he had in the business side of the business during his time at Estee Lauder? Or was he mostly just the creative side?
@@underskinYT I believed that he is the head of creative for the beauty line, with Estee Lauder manufacturing, marketing, and sold Tom Ford Beauty products under a licensing arrangement since 2006 with Black Orchid being the first fragrance. But any more then that I do not know haha
I really enjoy your videos. I've learned alot from them.
Really educational video! If Chanel, in 2023, still does not have a diverse range of skin tones catered for in its make up collections, it's likely not by accident.
you dont need to say that twice
the main question I have remains unanswered by this video: how the hell did they save ther reputation after Coco Chanel had been exposed as a Nazi?
I might need my morning coffee first, but the title of the video doesn't make sense to me.
Great content, so glad i stumbled upon your channel
I’m so glad you enjoyed the channel, thank you so much for watching. The title is in reference to the fact that most of the Chanel products throughout the history have been private labelled and priced up because of the brand name💕
So interesting! I love your videos. Both beauty and fashion. I appreciate your research and insight 🙏🏼
Thank you so much! Im so glad you enjoy my videos, Im literally uploding a new video now so it should be out soon 💕
Thank you so much for this series, I found it informative ❤

Absolutely, yes please 💕
There is one product you forgot, which was a creation with Heidi Morawetz: the black red lipstick and nail enamel. I remember its launch in the Nineties, and it made such an impact that it was frequently sold out and had waiting lists.
Do you know, I don’t remember that at all, I should look it up
The Jews of Europe are also 'White', they are just not 'Aryan', as defined by the Nazis.
Very interesting ty
Christian White people aren't what Hitler meant by Arian. The Arian race aren't completely human. It's worth researching.
WWII was to kill as many White people as possible. The Zionists didn't care who won the war, only that White people died.
Oh, and also to get Jews to Israel. The Zionist Jews lived, it was the antizionist ones who died. In order to escape Germany, they had to lie about it.
Thanks for the clarification.
I just subscribed today, thank you, very interesting content.
Im so happy to hear you subbed tysm 💕💕💕
Didn't know This about Chanel
Glad to inform 🥰
I absolutely adore your voice. You give the impression of a classy lady and it perfectly suits the video.
Thank you so much, from this point onwards I shall only wear Lacroix and a tiara at all times
The first viral Chanel beauty trend was the lipstick color "Vamp" in the mid 90s. Karl actually did the following rtw collection based on a new version of Vamp. He reintroduced it in silver and of course it was a huge flop!
So fascinating, absolutely love your channel ❤
Thank you so much! Im so glad you enjoyed 💕
Your French is far better than mine. Thanks for making this video.
Once upon a time I was quite good at french, but I havent practiced in years

such a well made video ! thank you !🎉
Glad you liked it!
Guerlain had a terracotta bronzer for men in 1988
Oh thank you 🤌
There were celebrity fragrances before Chanel and very many in between Chanel and Elizabeth Taylor, a lot of the perfumeries that became commercial became commercial with blends that were originally consigned as bespoke fragrances for royalty or socialites - the celebrities of the day so original perfumes were marketed as celebrity fragrances.
Wow, u sure know how to do this!
Enjoyed it again😀

They're pulling out of department stores in North America. Sales aren't what they were.
I think theyre doing it on purpose to create an idea of exclusivity
I can see why she supported the Nazis. It’s all about the money for her. It’s a means to take the wealth of Wertheimers.
They also aligned with her personal anti-semitic beliefs. Obviously idk if she knew the extent of their evil, but she definitely wanted to support them and use them to further her own wallet, yeah
Always buy No. 5 for mom. I knew she was associated with Nazis, and that she skated punishment that others received. Didn’t know it was this deep.
Luckily the people truly behind it (the wertheimers) won out in the end
I remember Jean Paul Gaultier had a makeup line for men in the 2000's, i think the video campaigns are still on youtube. And I think YSL also had a makeup line for men in the early 2010's. I had a touche éclat from that line.
Yeah, somebody else commented that JPG had a line as well, but I thought the touche eclat was from the womens line? (I had it even)
Your videos are amazing! Also I love your voice haha
Thank you so much!! 💕
Your research work is amazing!

All iconic 🤗
Parfumerie should be sold in more little bottles.
Lowering prices in size and therefore selling more. 🤗
You used to be able to get samples of it
Chanel products are tested on animals to this day, so for me, they can eff-off.
They want to sell in china, so they have to 😬
Huh?! I watched the whole video, I don't understand the title of it. What does it mean that it was never worth it? The description of their products is very positive in the video.
again, another fabulous video!
Thank you so much! Im so proud of this one
Chanel has gotten too big for its britches and has become a bunch of snobs. I rarely buy from them and when I do it's NEVER directly from Chanel.
You mean Chanel the fashion house or the beauty line?
What about Vamp lipstick and nail polish in the 90s that everyone had to have?
I literally don’t remember this at all, I’ll have a Google 🥰
Vamp changed everything, is copied to this day! Definitely cult status!
As always stellar! I can’t wait to see what’s next! 👀👀👀
Thank you so much! You wont have to wait long, Im trying to get another video out for the 5th 💖
Your French is so good!
Merci beaux coupe
I heard that Nivea Germany is the good one, not the same than the Nivea US, UK, Spain😮...are they using a different formula depending on where you live, climate etc.?
I have some makeup products that were intended for men that I bought in 2005 at Selfridges or Harrods, in London....I don’t remember the brand but I know I still have some of their nail polish somewhere, if I find it, I’ll come back to edit the commment!
I remember man-scara being a thing around that time, so maybe it was something to do with that? (But in my recollection, it wasn’t luxury make up?)
I am a huge fan of Coco Mademoiselle but I honestly hate No 5. The smell is just too pungent for me.
Its defijitely acquired taste, bit like Marmite, those that love it really do love it
You give perfection in your videos and such a rich history . A Pleasure .
I’m so glad you enjoyed the video, thank you so much for watching
I’m so glad you enjoyed the video, thank you so much for watching
Seeing and hearing this makes me think that J Galliano was trying to do the same w his antiemetic tantrum in 2010.
Maybe there is a long term plan to install him. I think VV will find her stride there because the house has such broad codes in accessories and wardrobe staples for enough people that her market is already there (I’m passionate too)
Oh Im sure financially she will be fine for a good while, Chanel is Chanel, itll do well with or without her. But when they lose creative credibility, the fall will come from the top down, theyll notice and then kick her out ruining her career (at least imo)
The green nailpolish colour is realy ugly 😂
They also had a dark cherry one that was everywhere, but I cant admit to liking that very much
Jean Paul Gaultier launched a mens line of makeup before Chanel...
Yeah a few people commented this, super super interesting
I'm not much into their cosmetic or skin care line...I'm intrigued by their handbags!
I did a whole fashion video that goes over all of the history of that, I highly recommend it 💕
Gtfo! I didn’t know Chanel started the different lighting that we literally all use on our ring lights! So crazy!
Its a take on diffusion lighting for sure, but soft boxing has existed for decades before Chanel used it in stores
I love how this anti semitic designer was trumped by Jews.
Thats how I see it too, almost like a sort of karma or justice
Per your own video….. they weaseled money out of her…. That’s the extent of her “anti semicism” …. She tried to weasel it back. Yet they knew even when unfavorably seen, her name still has cache so it was continually used.
@@alejandromolinac she was antisemitic well before she knew the wertheimers actually, its quite well documented
I believe Aramis for men had skincare products for men back in the day and Jean Paul Gautier had mens cosmetics in 2007.
Oh yeah JPG did for sure, but I didnt know about Aramis
I love Chanel no5❤
It’s still so popular even 100 years later
well done i love these videos

That moment was so iconic though
@@underskinYT hopefully you can explain the situation of Revlon cosmetics 👁️👄👁️🌟
I also find perfumed products extremely difficult to use, I have exceptionally dry and irritable skin, so I totally understand what you mean
@@underskinYT yes sensitive skin likely tells you immediately these products are no good (which is a blessing in disguise). But all of us should use only effective ingredients that are proven not to harm us. Brands like drunk elephant, Kate Somerville etc have all the science behind them. And yes they come at a similar price tag but they work and aren’t harmful! They just don’t have the fancy brand name ..
This was a great video but the title of the video is really misleading and doesn't reflect the thesis of the video at all. Weird.
Glad you enjoyed it 🥰
I got a Chanel ad when I clicked on this video. Lmaoooooooo
Jean Paul Gaultier was the first HC house which has launched, as first, a makeup line meant for male costumers.
Ah thank you!! I knew there mustve been one!
I don’t understand the appeal of Chanel perfume….it was boring like a detergent
Its an acquired taste fs, but those that like it really do love it
Today Chanel is owned by two Jewish brothers. lol Coco is rolling in her grave.
Very poetic justice
No. 5 goes stale in a day. I love it when it's fresh but that scent does not last.
