Awesome video, Bob! It's great that you're highlighting uncommon species of tetras! Those green lizard tetras are a must on my fish keeping bucket list! 🙂
Thank you very much for visiting Dan and bringing us these unique fish in the Tetra game. I'm torn between the first and the last. Guess I'll be spending the weekend, reading 👍
The swordtail tetra was often portrayed in older books (approx. 1970) about the hobby (in german aqu.literature) , the first time I see them at a shop.. Pitty they are so rare here. Thank you for the entertaining documentation. Cheers from Austria.
#1: Those swordtail tetras look SO MUCH LIKE furcatus rainbows (pseudomugils...); #2: That "slow jazz" clip of the sailfin @ ~12:00 is absolutely brilliant editing, Bob. AAA+++
Pumped I was gifted a subscription in the last stream bc I’m loving all the videos! I pretty much want all the tetras you showed in this video but those colletti tetras were gorgeous!
I have a film and yes a real film of Spraying Characin from the days that I was busy with aquariums a lot... that was 1977 or 1978 wow time flies. I was hoping to see it here again.
Ok, those moenkhausia collettii are pretty amazing. It's interesting that the red in the tail fin goes so far up the body. Normally, when the tail color doesn't continue all the way up the body, it is really just limited to the fin it's self. And that oddball one is crazy.
The advantage of internal fertilization -more of the eggs get fertilized and since the female lays them alone, there's less fish around to eat the eggs.
Awesome vid and interesting species. One thing I notice is that some of these species represented act like they could out compete for food in a community tank.
Hi the sword tail tetra u talking about we dose catch it in trinidad in our rivers first time seeing it on TH-cam which is so cool am happy to see that
Gold colour is most likely … Coloration in fishes is typically produced and controlled by specialized cells called chromatophores. The metallic hues exhibited in wild H. rodwayi, on the other hand, are quite different, being produced by a cutaneous reaction to a parasitic trematode. The golden shine can be linked to guanin, a substance that is secreted by the skin as a protection against trematode infestation. This fish appears to be more prone to disease than many other tetras (particularly to skin parasites). However, wild specimens, which (judging from the preponderance of gold “morphs”) usually show evidence of exposure to the parasite, tend not to be carriers and pose no general threat to their tankmates.
The one with the iriscident scales...keep that one and try to breed it and then breed back and see whether the descendants carry that trait of the gold scales?

The sailfin tetra is very territorial. Keep in low numbers. Males get very beautiful.
Glad I looked at the comments I want to order 20 of those blood cap moon tetras when I get home
I had sailfin tetras some years ago.. Found them beautiful, but a bit agressive, they took out all my neons over a period of 2-3 months....

The gold collet tetra fish has had the same parasite that gives gold tetras there iridescence.
