I had my Neon Tetra’s for well over 15 years. I had them in a heavily planted 55 gallon aquarium. It was a Dutch Style tank and very natural. I started out with about 20, and over the years the number increased to over 50. The Fry would hide in the plants. I let nature takes it course, so I think I could have had a bigger amount of Tetras. I had a decent amount of Otocinclus Catfish as my cleaning crew. I move across the country, so I sold the whole setup with fish and all. I even helped setting up the tank for the lady.

Another note: Columbian tetras are extremely easy to breed if you are a beginning breeder. I have had them spawn in a quarantine tank, eggs hatched, fry appeared (some were not eaten). OBviously if you remove parents after spawning, protect eggs, etc -- you will have better luck. Mine spawned in tap water (slightly hard) so they are not picky about water hardness or pH either.

Rummynose tetras, hardy beautiful fish, it has taken me several attempts, as I found they do not tolerate change, moving an are most stressed when you first get them, I found treating them for everything in quarantine an feeding small often brine shrimp baby brine cyclops an small blood worms, feed them up.
Once through provided your tank is stable they are hardy

Fish stores are not what they use to be back in the 60's and 70's. i really liked all the fish that came from the Ross Scolof fish farms in Florida. The platties were my Favorite. Surprised you did not have the Cardinal Tetra on your list. back 50+ years ago there were at least 15 or more Tropical fish stores in my area. Now sadly only about 2 and they both were originals from 60 years ago. i worked for one of them when i was in jr high. was soooo much fun. every night at closing the owner would tell me another installment about the fish trade or where certain fish camr from. I also remember all the fish we could no longer get back then b/c they were from the wild and their populations were dwindling. One of them was the Tr-colored shark or as they are sold at Petsmart, the Bala shark. Another was Red Tail sharks. Back then too they never told u how big the fish you were buying would eventually get...like Plecoo's and Clown loaches and the tri-color sharks....lol

2nd comment. I have the Rummy nose tetras. I've been lucky that I have never had an issue. The group of 10 I have had for three years now. My water is almost mineral free out of my well. You might want to try adding RO water with water changes. I dont think they like hard water. My Ph stays around 6.8 if this helps TDS around 45 in this tank. Hardness 4 with not much gh. And I do water changes every week about 20%. Temperature 76. Hope it helps.

my Rummy nose tips are, rare small water changes ,filter threw charcoal peat & spagnum moss, lots of leaf litter , i collected from my back yard boil the leaves ( condences to black water , they dig black water ) let them dry very very dry then place in planted tank , also i noticed they like a heavily planted tank with intermitten clear spaces like hedge rows, lots of jungle val, guppy grass, crips,& highgrow sperma driftwood & sandy substright

    Great list, well commentated.
    For me:
    1. Glass bloodfin
    2. Black line tetra
    3. Emperor tetra (palmeri)
    4. Brycinus longipinnis
    5. Congo tetra
    6. Marble hatchet
    7. Glowlights (also the albino variety)
    8. Pretty tetra
    9. Red pencil tetra
    10. Yellow tetra (H. bifasciatus; although unable to find them for more than 40 years now).
As for the Rummy nose, they do well feeding on live Artemia, 2-4 times a week, having their own spacy planted (not heavily) tanks.

We have similar taste in tetras. I just got my Congo tetras. I had been looking for them since you did the species spot light on them. I’ve had similar experience with rummy nose tetras. I wish I had the magic solution for you, but I’ve killed more than I’ve kept alive. I currently have a small school of six which I’m hoping to enlarge soon. The Pristilla tetra or X-ray tetra is pretty cool too. You can see all it’s insides.

You nailed the issues with Rummynose. Small changes. I have a slew of them in a 55, and I change 5 gallons a week on average. I use a faucet aerator diverter that uses an aquarium airline hose and my water change fills are down SLOWLY. Radical changes, like you alluded to by moving them from tank to tank never seems to fare well, especially if they've been established in a tank for a good while. A lot of people I know struggle with them also, I seem to have great luck with them. Nothing more incredible than Rummynose housed with a school of Neon's or Cardinals, or as I do, both. I unlike most, like Neon's better than Cardinals. Cardinals color is deeper, but Neon's are brighter and sparkle with the silver.

I had Lemons, Cardinals and Rummy Noses in a planted tank with bogwood arches and caves, Java Moss and a big centrepiece Amazon Swordplant. That was a blast of a display.
Tip if you get Lemons - they're washed out looking in dealer tanks. When you put them in a proper planted tank, feed them a mix of colour food and live food. Once they grow a little, they'll be bursts of sunshine yellow in your aquarium.
As for Neons - recently they've been problematic due to inbreeding, and Neon Tetra Disease destroys them mercilessly. Cardinals are much less prone to inbreeding weakness.
With Rummy Noses, the BIG problem is that they dump stress hormones into the bag at the dealer. They need to be kept in the dark after bagging to stop them dumping stress hormones in the bag, and acclimatised to the aquarium in subdued light. Once they settle in, several feedings of live Daphnia will bring them round, after which they'll be a lot more robust. They also appreciate having tankmates swimming above them to act as "warning canaries" to feel safe, and if you can pop a couple of floating plants in the tank, even better.
Another odd feature of my Rummy Noses, was that they seemed to prefer plants such as Amazon Swordplants and Vallisneria to bushy plants like Cabomba. Might be worth trying this next time you run with them.

How about Serpae tetras? I have a 75 gal with a juvenile gold severum and three young angels and I'm looking to displace some of the severum's aggression toward the angels. Nobody has gotten hurt but I don't want the angels to get too bullied.
Are Serpae's fin-nippers? They look great and have longfin varieties and could be just enough distraction for the severum.

I have a 90 gallon tank that has almost all Tetras, two of the fish are Hillstream Loaches. I have 25 Rummynose tetras, 25 Cardinal Tetras and 20 hengli Rasboras. This is the most peaceful community tank I have ever had, there is zero stress in that tank all the fish get along great. Along with being a planted tank makes it an awesome tank. I have been thinking of also adding some Panda Cory cats which I think would be a perfect addition to finalize the stocking. Also could leave it as is, it's pretty good just the way it is.
P.S. I have 25 Rummy nose tetras, they are all thriving with no problems. I don't know if I'm doing something different than you are or what the secret may be but they are doing great, haven't lost a single one and it's been about five months now. I do 50% water change once a week, I also inject CO2 into the tank for the plants. The tank is heavily planted, maybe it is the size of the group or something? They start schooling back and forth at dusk every day and the Cardinal tetras join them it is quite the sight to see them all schooling back and forth together like that. The one thing I do is make sure everything about the tank stays stable, I don't chase parameters so much as I work to keep the tank stable.

Thank You, it is an awesome tank I really like it. I'm surprised I've had the success that I have. It's my first attempt at a high tech tank and it all went good, almost to good lol. Now watch, I probably just jinxed myself. I liked your list and the lemon tetras would be a pretty awesome fish to start with. If your doing a tank for schooling fish I would think fewer species and larger schools of 20 or more. A school of 20 0r more lemon tetras in a planted tank would look pretty sweet. Cheers!

Oh wow.....Rummy nose Tetra is very hardy for me but other fish seem to not make it. I live where there is very hard water, I keep them in a planted tank, not too big. Perhaps you live where there is soft water and that's the difference. I have them with balloon mollies, mono shrimp and snails. I don't know....go figure.

How is this for experience and common sense . Encouraging for the less experienced. No sign of the “ fish police “ who had out absolutes .
