- In this pilot episode of Gothic Homemaking, Aurelio Voltaire begins the process of turning a tiny, New York City apartment into an elegant Gothic lair. In the process, he demonstrates how to make a "Gothic Wine Bottle Candelabra" and invites some sexy friends (and possibly a werewolf!) to a Gothic painting party.

Compared to other guys who dress gothy, I realized that Voltaire has a unique style to him. I like it.

It's simply the elegant-victorian-historistic style, while the others are more punky or cliche-spookey. Personally I am more the Voltaire-type of goth, but I wouldn't put any of these styles over the others, as long as they are that artistic and full of details. ; )
The problem is that punk-style, no matter if black or colourful, is more common and it's much easier to put your clothes together in that style. I'm having really hard times finding clothes for myself.
A guy I was joking. I love all their styles. I just got a serious kick out of "Disco Dracula".

I've tried the classier kind of goth that he does (though to a much lesser extent) and I think it takes a very particular kind of person or presence/vibe for it to work.. so it didn't work for me xD

I'd paint any apartment any color for free wine.
I painted four rooms in a house once for a small crate of Imported french wine (9 bottles) and a pack of Marlboro.

The joke "Count Crapula" was so smart, even if you don't realise it. Dracula comes from Romania (Vlad Tepes). In Romanian, "pula" means dick. So, Crapula, was a double joke. Ha!

That "constant nod to endorsers" as you call it is me sharing my love for things I think should be in a Gothic lair. Zero endorsers approached me.. I approached THEM because we were already showcasing their items.
at least $2000 a month?? NYC is fucking crazy, but I guess that's no big revelation LOL
2000 isn't terrible for where he's at. good areas go for anywhere between 2.5 and 4k. anything less and you're looking at renting with 4 people in a 1 bedroom 6th floor walk up.
Cross99obx $2000 a month isn't on the high end in NYC. I live in NYC and there used to be a reason to live here - there's no reason now. Most industries left except the fashion industry left and there certainly hasn't been any rock scene here for decades. Kinda pointless.
Dylan A. Kent there are definitely niche rock joints still around. But after white noise closed and St marks square turned around.. it's tough. The pyramid club still has good events, the bowery and madame x and ottos, too.

Wow, I've heard about living expenses being astronomical in major cities, but this is just ludicrous... I'll never complain about the kinds of rent we have to pay here where I live (western Germany), ever again. 2000$ for that shoebox... x.x

Decided to hop in here for an October rewatch. I remember eagerly awaiting the day that this first episode would come out. To think it's been nearly seven years, and that I've gone from living with my parents when I was 16 to being a 23 year old just now preparing to make my own gothic lair with the help of these videos. Jeez, time sure flies.

I watched this episode after your 100th - great start to an epic series. Orville was much chattier back in the day. It was always satisfying to watch a bunch of goths paint your apartment.

Yeah, he should come to Ayden. I have a doctors office and a pharmacy with a little sidewalk connecting them to my apartment complex. The grocery store is right across a not so busy road. My apartment retails for $575.

My boyfriend and I lived in an apartment for years where the walls were white and we could not paint them. So when we moved out and bought a house, the first thing we did was buy dark grey paint xD I've been looking forward to this series for a long time, can't wait to see the next one. Much love!
Raven H. If you have a place where you cannot paint consider large wall hangings. Large pictures will distract from the great expanse of white walls or if you are truly creative (or truly broke) take flat sheets or large pieces of fabric and paint them, then hang them up like the tapestries of olde. Instant "wallpaper".

My room was used to belong to Denver Broncos fans. It was painted orange and blue. Mom was like "So lemme guess you're going to paint it black?" And I was like, "Close, I'm gonna paint the walls red and the TRIM black. Good to see I made the right choice.
I just moved and already started painting the walls in black and dark purple.... this is a great time to discover this channel

Honestly anytime anyone says they live in NYC its immediately a 'WOW!!!!' because just getting to LIVE in the city is something just outstandingly amazing that few people ever can accomplish- regardless of size! But so awesome that the whole series is dedicated towards How to take what you got--- and make it great! And that is something that most of us need, regardless of where we live, how big it is, or how much we pay. A house truly needs to be made into a home. So amazing kudos on the theming of Gothic homemaking. @.@

The little old lady that comes into the apartment, love her! So adorbs! That hotel is absolutely gorgeous- and when the iron came out and it was at that moment, "Even the iron.." I seriously made a little squeak of happiness. A black iron? :laughs: Loved the play off of Rest in Peace from 'Recycling' -- What a vivid imagination someone has there ;D

I was about to say you can't paint a room grey in all black cliothing, but then I realised, that's exactly what I do. I'm a Goth handyman, I used to save the black clothes for after work but one day I realised I was tired of wearing paint splattered torn blue jeans to work and looking like a schlub, so I invested in a bunch of black work clothes, they get paint on them but I feel much better about myself, and can just paint over the paint with black later. also mighty Zarquon is that redhead cute @_@

I know right? Voltaire just seems to hold back on the visuals just a tad...he doesn't look nearly as eccentric as some others might.
Not that I'm saying it's a bad thing, but he seems like he could fall into a variety of crowds at any moment but is at home with the goth.

Voltaire, I haven't done it in a while, but I used to purchase the Castello Banfi Bellagio Chianti bottles, and because my grandmother died when I was a toddler, one of the gifts I remember her sending us for Xmas were the color drop candles, I use those. Made my first one over 25 years ago. Seeing your clip here compels me to make a few fresh ones for our abode we bought last year. Thank you!

So after I watched your Nooseletter this month, I figured I'd pop over and see what on earth this gothic home making thing was.
Was absolutely not disappointed. I'll definitely end up using the candelabra trick at some point, and you've introduced me to faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar too many things I'm inexorably compelled to buy. The bits were funny, and I hope poor Orville didn't have too bad of a hangover the next day. :)
Also, if your music didn't cement you as one of my favorite musicians, your beer choice definitely did. Good on ya.
