  • Last and least of the Apes series tries to bring the story full circle but suffers from tv-style production values and haphazard last-minute re-cutting‚ to reduce the‚ violence‚ and‚ secure a PG rating. The uncut version is now available on Blu-Ray.

I get very offended when people put down this film, for it is without a doubt the very finest of all the PLANET OF THE APES films that were shot in somebody's backyard.

It's a pity that they skimped on the budget, as the timeline and lore concepts were quite well developed, which would have made a good movie if they made an effort.
That said, the imagery of the ruined city was still extremely effective and haunting, and indicates what might have been if properly funded.

Agreed. I’ve learned not to listen to other people’s negative comments about a movie or a song. It’s all subjective anyway. I feel Battle is a good film under the circumstances in which was produced.

Gosh, local tv Channel 5 (NYC) played every Apes film every Saturday afternoon for a year once in the early 1980s, completely out of order, so I never knew which numerical sequel I was watching, and I honestly didn't think it mattered. I was age 9 or 10 at the time and it was just background noise for me as I read my comics or cleaned my room. I never knew what the heck was going on, but I loved the original first film.

I laughed out loud when Landis introduced himself as Marie Dressler! Film buffs know her as the star of the very first feature length comedy film "Tillie's Punctured Romance" (1914), made by Mack Sennett and also starring a young Charles Chaplin. I love that Landis does these weird false intros of himself. This one was a particularly bizarre non sequitur that just tickled me for no good reason. :)

"It's a bad movie!" No it's not. It's really limited by a budget but honestly I'd take this one over Beneath any day of the week. They had a lot of good intentions/ideas here that worked well and some that failed. However it wasn't fully their fault as Fox had grown so cheap they barely gave them any money. They had to make the movie on scraps and it shows especially in the battle scene itself as that same treehouse that got blown up was used a ton in different angles. Thompson was smart that way. There's really some fun stuff here: McDowell's awesome as always and added dignity to the movie, Paul Williams is a hoot as the smartalecy Virgil, Ayers is fun in the 3 scenes he got, the arc with the kid was just sad and well done, and the real star of the movie was Akins as Aldo.. he's freaking hilarious and fun to watch every time he shows up. I watched this on Easter Sunday for a kick and had a ball with it.. once you get over the limited budget it's a fun ride. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes did this movie's idea more fully thankfully but this one's still fun.

I saw the film as a kid( 9 or 10). I liked it at the time. Like all sequels it was trying to cash in or out, on the series. The studio's in my mind have not changed much. But, the Ape series each film had less and less budgets. But, still like this film for the memories of going to the pictures on a Saturday afternoon.

I heard that originally Roddy McDowell was looking forward to doing this picture because originally it was going to be significantly darker and would have the Ceasar character becoming a power hungry tyrant, but when the budget was cut everybody just decided to phone it in, and they made Ceasar a total pussy.

    • @animatorFan74
      @animatorFan74 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I actually liked the Ceasar character in this - he was tough when needed but he never resorted to the human's level of "you killed us so we kill you" violence, which I thought was a main point in the film.
If he had started killing off humans here and there, I think he would have lost me in this film...

I so wish they would have evolved Ceasar's character more in "Conquest" before his original speech at the end. Then follow on to the originally intended arch because he would have made one hell of a tyrannical leader. It would have made so much sense to have him fight with Aldo if his ego felt threatened on top of craving absolute control. He should have been the complete juxtaposition of his parents.

Paul Williams played a very likeable character in the film. This movie still had it's bright spots as we learned that apes and human would live together as friends all thanks to Caesar bringing that mindset and changing history. The final scene is also very sad many say.

People usually consider this or Beneath the worst of the original series. What gives Beneath the advantage for me is that it at least has most of the original cast, General Ursus, it has a more epic feel, the climax is one of the most unforgettable in sci-fi cinema, and it has more ambitious ideas.

I saw this at the drive-in in the 70's and went ,well, ape over it, begging my parents to take me again. After behaving like a brat they caved. Not my proudest moment but it achieved the objective. The confrontation between Caesar and Aldo is still pretty intense. Mr. Landis is alone in his opinion.

Saw when I was a kid, after 'Conquest' could not hold a candle, and absolutely no sympathy for the 'mutants'. I loved the Planet of the Apes saga (and still do) but was so disappointed with this. It plays out like an episode from the TV show. A war between the Apes and the Human factions sounded so good but all we got was about 20 men in a bus, a motorbike and a couple of jeeps up against about 20 guys in badly fitting ape suits!!! Roddy McDowall and Claude Akins made this barely tolerable but it was a sad end to the Apes story that should have been a spectacular, showing the rise of the apes and how they subjugated mankind. I had no idea though that there is an uncut version of this movie!! Is it available in the UK?

Yep, bought the Blu-Ray set of the original 5 movies. Even with the film being extended, it still aint much!! So yea, I'm going with the superior original cut of Conquest as the true ending to the ape saga, much more violent and such a dark climax, so much better than the cinema release's badly edited upbeat ending.

Personally, I was NOT impressed with "Battle for the Planet of the Apes" because of a substandard plot and a limited budget. I agreed at first that it was going to be a movie about some kind of new destiny for both the apes and humans. In other words, the movie was going to be somewhat family-friendly like the first three "Apes" films. But after what happened with "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes" where that movie had just about having scared some of the audiences because of the extreme violence, the filmmakers had decided to go back to the family-friendly approach with "Battle." But unfortunately, "Battle" was a disappointment. If the movie would have been remade, perhaps with a much better screenplay and with a bigger budget, maybe the remake would have turned out better. Then again, who knows?
