  • With the release of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes in theaters this week, we take a look at the final chapter of the original Planet of the Apes series: Battle For The Planet of the Apes! Starring Roddy McDowall and Claude Akins, this finisher to the series didn't live up to the hype when originally released, but perhaps it was ahead of it's time? We dissect and drink our way through it to find out!

I saw all of these when they came out from 1968 to 1973 and no one thought any of them were bad. They filled theaters and Drive Inns to the max every where and played for weeks and weeks. It took 40 years later, till someone called this one or that one bad. Bet they were not there when they premiered.

Exactly people around the early 2000s and 90s started saying bad things about this movie. I was born in 2003 and watched the first movie when I was 3 and the rest in the early 2010s but I watched the show aswell in the year 2010. But I love them however my parents don't like this one my mother went to see escape and my mother was just about one when the first movie came put and my farther was born in 68

It's ironic how the Tim Burton remake & the three Andy Serkis films have made way more money than all the original five movies did combined. In fact, due to the surprise success of the last 4 recent "Apes" films (including the Tim Burton revival) the franchise has grossed over $2 billion dollars worldwide against a combined budget of $567.5 million dollars. The Tim Burton remake grossed $180 million dollars domestically & $362 million dollars worldwide, despite a negative reception. The remake proved there was still an audience for this franchise. Fast forward a decade later, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" became a surprise critical & box office success grossing $176 million dollars domestically, which is slightly less than the Tim Buton revival, however, it managed to outgross the Tim Burton remake by making over $481 million dollars worldwide more than 5 times it's production cost of $93 million which was a smaller budget when compared with the budget of the Tim Burton revival which carried a budget of $100 million . "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is not only considered the best in the franchise, but it is the highest box office earner in the "Planet of the Apes" franchise at $208.5 million domestic & $711 million dollars world-wide against a budget of $170 million dollars. "War for the Planet of the Apes" would earn significantly less than ""Dawn" both domestically & worldwide, despite critical acclaim. It would gross $146.9 million dollars domestic & $490.7 million dollars worldwide against a budget of $150 million, slightly less than the budget for "Dawn," so it's not exactly a loss as the movie made its money back, which is why there will be another film coming out in late May of next year called "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" which will be a direct sequel to "War." The three Andy Serkis movies did more with the story than the first five movies ever did with memorable villains such as Koba &, a more grounded story & a wonderful performance from Andy Serkis. What do you think?

Given the miniscule budget the director had to stage a "Big War" I think he did a terrific job. The plot's good, Aldo the Antagonist is good. I think he made this with about 20 extras who had to act on both sides. Thanks to editing and close-ups they did a good job and it's an entertaining film.

planet of the squirrels would be crazy. They have ninja skill, are badass parkour athlete, they reproduce faster than chimps, grew up faster. I live in montreal, there is a lot of squirrels, if tomorrow they pull some planet of the apes sh*t, I m out. They will plot, sneak, got us by the number and good prep. F*ck it, if I was Bruce Wayne, I would be squirrelman

I grew up with all of these pictures as a kid in my dad's movie theatre. 1, 2 and 4 were terrific. But 3 and 5 felt like TV movies from the era. Battle, in particular, felt like it was put together in someone's back yard on a few weekends. The lower budgets really showed. Also, Battle didn't move the story forward that much. It just filled a small unimportant gap, like how SOLO showed Han and Lando meeting for the first time... it just isn't necessary. Sadly, even John Huston's legendary voice didn't add much gravitas as probably it was expected to do.

Personally I think it's the best of the bunch because along with how not only does an ape Lawgiver tells a story to an equal society of Humans and Apes but along with in the story that he tells it also explains how to got to be there in becoming an equal society of humans and apes. Also to top this off how at at the comics group of Malibu Graphics they were just as annoyed by me as they were glad to have me there for them.As a result I of me it's also how The POTA:The Forbidden zone Miniseries got to come into existence.

It changed the future this way from the first planet of the apes 1968 with the birth of of the talking ape would change the future from going back in time that is why they did it so that can happen and give it a ending to the movies

You want to talk about a good battle for the Planet of the Apes movie? How about instead the mutants had like 200 or 300 plus men and had a few tanks maybe a few more Jeeps and a couple more of those army trucks and that would have been an epic battle between the Apes

Imo, the reason it isn't liked very well is that it's so openly campy, and barely seems to be taking itself seriously. There was plenty of camp in the previous movies, but it was largely unironic camp born from the melodrama that drives the series. But Battle basically felt like a kid's movie. On the other hand, the previous movie (Conquest) was literally about the Watts Riots and basically asks "What if Malcolm X violently won the race war?" So there was some insane tonal whiplash that makes Battle feel very fluffy and out-of-place.
    .
(Also, it's not uncommon for fans to think the 2nd one, Beneath, is still the worst of the bunch aside from its ending. Battle may be silly and campy, but Beneath is just painful to sit through. Like "bad Star Trek TOS episode" painful.)

I for a change fully agree with you here lol.. this one's quite a fun ride. I hated it the first time I watched it as I watched all of them especially the sequels one Saturday on AMC as I taped them in order; it was such a let down compared to Conquest. I watched it a 2nd time a few months later and it got better, but on my third watch on Easter Sunday I finally got this movie.. it's a hoot. Granted the budget is extremely low as Fox forced them to make this on scraps but they were smart and filmed their way around it. The lack of a budget hurts in the battle scene but besides that it's good entertainment and a perfect farewell to the films. McDowell's awesome as always and added class to this movie, Williams is a hoot as Virgil, but Claude Akins steals this movie is beyond fun to watch. He's hilarious and hams it up times 10 and it makes the movie so much better. That whole arc with the son's sad and then it all gathers for a random and fun ending scene.. that shot of the statue is quite haunting and has haunted me for years.. way more fitting than they realized. Is it as good as the first one or Escape is? Not at all, but is it better than Burton's movie and Beneath, yes it is.

Escape and Conquest lack the fantasy environments of the others, the villains are boring to me as well.

Tim Burton movies was far from being bad . It was different which in my book is good. People saying the movie was trash didn't understand it. There is time travel and parallel universes in this w.

Agreed.. this one got way better on my 2nd watch while Beneath got worse. That one I'll give credit for the idea of it but it was handled so badly. Fransiscous was a terrible replacement for Heston.. shoulda went with Burt Reynolds as it was down to those two before they went with James. The ending's just random as hell and the movie lead to nothing. This one meanwhile did.. it was super cheap but it told a great story of how Caeser's POV on everything changed from start to end. The end with the crying statue's just haunting.. haunted me ever since I first watched it. If it had a bigger budget it woulda worked a lot better.

I didn't think any of them were bad. Maybe it's because I was a kid as they came to the theatres (I can't believe the last one was '73, I was only 10yrs old!) but I love all of them.
