John Landis on KING KONG vs. GODZILLA

  • Original Kong animator Willis O'Brien never got credit (nor would he have wanted it) for his treatment of King Kong vs. Frankenstein, which ultimately transmuted into the third and most popular entry in Toho's Godzilla series. The redesigned Big G was played much more for cartoonish laughs and the series became basically kiddie-oriented. The less said about the ratty Kong suit the better. The restructured US version incorporates new American footage plus much stock material from The Mysterians.

Saw this in 1963 in the Fox Theater in Redlands, CA and it was as much fun as Landis says it was. Especially enjoyed the natives getting Kong drunk on their native brew.

Obie probably "wept" because the Kong suit & head puppet were so bad.

Unlike other outsized monsters, KONG proved to be mortal in his screen debut, which makes this embarrassing misfire all the more confounding. As such, KONG wouldn't have it this bad again until 2017's KONG:SKULL ISLAND, although in truth, the giant gorilla in the current Monsterverse series is actually KINO -- a different character entirely. KINO shares none of KONG's history or even his physical characteristics, and most significantly he doesn't share KONG's mortality. As everyone knows, KONG met his end after falling from a New York skyscraper while trying to protect his beautiful blonde "bride" from attacking aircraft. KINO, conversely, has survived altercations with enemies toting unlimited firepower, making him just another indestructible behemoth who always comes back for the next round of destruction. The KING KONG created by Edgar Wallace and Merian C. Cooper and magically brought to life by special effects wizard Willis O'Brien, simply would not impress contemporary audiences who now expect their movie monsters to be hundreds of feet tall and to live to fight another day...

The first movie I ever had on VHS. I was 10 years old when I got it and love this movie to this day. Excited for the Kong remake and possibly if successful, there would be a remake of this film.

Saw this on TV in the 70's. It was like watching a monster wrestling match without the ring. Great fun.

yes and that's Godzilla swimming away underwater cause he's a sea creature and lives and sleeps in the ocean and kong is bee-lining his way home too....it was a draw. Godzilla kicked kongs ass all over the place you know that (on land) what did kong do to Godzilla in the ocean??? nothing. it's just that you've only seen the butchered Universal version which purposely deletes Godzilla's roar at the end and keeps kongs and that geek carter guy says "Godzilla has disappeared w/out a trace".... why was a submarine down there with sonar or something ahh ha ha joke it was sooo biased. not in the Japanese version. they just fall off the cliff and that's it. the guys in the helicopter say Godzilla probably survived....no really??? and kong is going back home well sure cause he looks like he is 20 football fields away going straight "home". and then the scientist on the cliff says we must respect all animals and plants and then you see a Japanese symbol for the end and you hear a loud roar from Godzilla and then kong...that's it. I recommend going to a great site called showavideo.com and you can buy the Japanese bluray of king kong vs Godzilla w English subs. it also comes with the English universal version in bluray. it's 22.99 plus 6.75 for 2 day priority shipping. if it was just the Japanese version another words a single bluray disc like Godzilla vs mechagodzilla 74 in bluray w English subs it would be 16.99 with 6.75 for 2 day shipping. it's a great site. I have every non available Godzilla movie not in bluray now in bluray. plus other kaiju movies like space amoeba in bluray w English subs and Frankenstein conquers the world in bluray with 4 different versions of the film including I think the great Japanese alternate ending when Oodaku comes out from the lake and drags frankie down into the lake and drowns him. great site and a they have all the re-releases of all the Godzilla movies in bluray that toho did in the summer of 2014. the only thing showavideo.com does is add English subs...yeah THE ONLY THING..THE MOST IMPORTANT THING UNLESS YOU UNDERSTAND JAPANESE. another must have movie in blu ray is war of the gargantuas. although me being such a nice guy you can go to google and put in the search "king kong vs Godzilla from 123 movies" and it has the Japanese version with English subs....just when that stupid flash player thing pops in the part where the subs are close it out and it will come to a flash player full screen just minimize it and you got your movie!!!!! make sure your Norton antivirus is on and you will be fine trust me.

Godzilla is knocked unconscious by Kong underwater (possibly by the electricity when they hit the water) and he is washed ashore by the hurricane in the opening of the next movie, at which point he eventually revives.
You don't have to like it, but that was Toho's intent: Kong won.

The Japanese version is pretty similar in tone only it's intentionally spoofy. The US edit is trying to be serious.

When people blast the Amerized version of Godzilla (and for good reason) should see some of the sillier adventures that the Japanese themselves subjected Godzilla too. I would really like to see the original version of this but cannot imagine it being better. I enjoyed both version of Godzilla and prefer the opening of the American version with the slow tracking shot of Tokyo after a Godzilla attack and then it's aftermath over the Japanese version of the attack on the fishing boat.

CannonballZ1975 What he meant was the 30th anniversary of Toho Studios in Japan. Toho was founded in 1932 and this was a super production in their company.

I don't accept the basic premise of this film because in reality King Kong is much smaller than Godzilla. This King Kong could never stand atop the Empire State Building and Godzilla would simply fry any size Kong anyway.

your right it is a co-production between Rankin Bass and toho which rankin bass had a cartoon of king kong and that's what the movie is based on. it IS NOT IN ANY WAY RELATED TO FAKE KONG VS GODZILLA 62 your right because it's kinda funny how kong is blown up like a 100 feet more than he really is and given a fake power of electricity making him stronger and then 4 years later in king kong escapes ohh boy kong shrinks to 60 feet and no longer has that fake power so your absolutely right sir. fuck john landis by the way!!!! the Japanese version of kk vs Godzilla is a much better movie with akira ifukubes soundscore and they don't delete Godzilla's roar at the end and just keep kongs and they don't say "Godzilla has disappeared w/out a trace) I mean Godzilla is a sea creature who lives and sleeps in the ocean!!! he just swam away big deal as kong swam away and made a bee-line home too. it was a draw..period. actually Godzilla kicked his ass pretty good. gave him that 2 legged drop kick from hell and kong was out of it if not dead and then here comes a convenient thunderstorm which for some inexplicable reason electricity raise kong from the dead??? since when. every king kong movie I've ever seen he get's killed by the military very easily. ha ha ive seen shin gojira or Godzilla resurgence 2016 and believe me kong doesn't want any part of that in 2020. America sucks at doing Godzilla movies....stick to kong and japan will stick to doing Godzilla movies. if I was toho I would not allow a Godzilla vs kong movie cause it makes no sense!!! kong is 25 feet tall per the 2005 movie and Godzilla is like 400 feet tall in 2016.....oohhh but in kong skull island there going to have another fake kong who is taller all the sudden just to be able to fight Godzilla in 2020....what a joke. I understand that toho will do it for the money of course and don't worry g-fans ha ha Godzilla will not lose!!!

Yeah, the guy who rigged the stunt fucked it up! Not Landis! It's the same as if you hire an actor and they seem great, but then they flub their lines and suck! The director may be able to handle that kind of thing but YOU go and try to deal with a copter fuck up!! You can't!
