    The focus on focus is merely a marketing campaign, whatever you may think of that. The real benefit of the device is its advantage as e-ink device over an iPad, for example, especially when it comes to writing in long hand, drawing and reading. For me, e-ink remains a complementary technology .The long battery life and the ability to use these devices in all sorts of lighting now that we have front lighted devices are their real advantages. That said, I do find the experience of writing on the RM2 and the Scribe most pleasant and the fact that it comes closer to writing on a piece of paper than does writing on my iPad is an added benefit.

    There's a "special power" in a device that your mind ASSOCIATES ONLY with productivity or at least distraction free activities. Without any "history" of watching movies, playing, scrolling etc. After all our memories last very long time.

    I ordered a pro today. I'm not interested in the distraction free idea at all. I want to be able to take notes about my hobbies off my computer and out of magazines, that kind of thing. It's more for all my hobbies and journaling.

    I read and annotate technical reports for a living. Most are 200-750 pages. They are boring to read. I leave my phone and laptop in my office and sit in a reading chair with a good lamp to force myself to focus and keep reading. My printer budget was a couple thousand dollars a year. A near A4 sized color e-ink device is perfect for my use case. I just hope RM doesn't add to much friction getting files on the device and getting annotations out of the file afterwards. That would kill it for me.

    • @ByteSizedSociety

      Getting annotations out, like filtering just the pages with annotations?
      I've wanted to find annotated pages, and will be asking for that from Remarkable in a support ticket soon.

    The question of whether or not to be distraction-free is meaningless because it is your mind that gets distracted, not an electronic device.

    • @NigraXXL
      @NigraXXL 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      What something "allows" you to do makes a difference. Sure, if you're easily distracted you will probably pick up your phone and start scrolling, but not being able to do it on the device you're using adds friction. This makes a difference to someone who is actively looking to be more focused. In short, your device can become your enabler.

    Great thoughts about the distraction free arguments! Devices with wide range of tools often also have more ways to customize them towards a completely distraction free experience. I also wanted the A5X2 at first but then I found a way to make the NA3c Supernote-Like (with launcher showing just 4 work-focused apps as obsidian, calendar and todoist. This way I got a distraction free experience without any notifications with a more powerful/faster device.

    Color e-ink remarkable would be tempting if they would have a smaller size. Thankfully they don't have an A6.
    As you said, any device can be distraction free, if you turn off notifications, which is why I don't really get dumb phones. On the other hand when I bought my supernote I wanted a device dedicated to writing, which is why I didn't go the ipad route. I do have an ipad that doesn't distract me, because all notifications are turned off, but the device is capable of doing so much which is the reason I didn't want an ipad when making the decision.
    So I agree, more focused, could have been a better way to say it.

    "Can a niche market support all that?" It can if you expand the market and make it less niche. Personally, as the technology stands today, I think that can only be achieved if they drop the price by half.
    This particular product, though, addresses the already existing gadgety productivity-tool early-adopter market and tosses them a thing that does something a bit different. And it has the insane price tag to match the expectations of that market.

    I remember you doing a video in which you compared colours between Kaleido 3, Gallery 3 and some regular LCD tablet with a colour pallet. It would be nice to do the same test, merely comparing the Galy and the Remarkable, to see what has changed.
    Remember that at the time they talked about roughly 50.000 colours and now 20.000 colours, so I suppose the picture would appear differently.

      Yes! I was thinking the same thing and was planning to do some of that in the first video. I'm going to use a different pallet this time, not the color swirl, but I too want to see what changed. I also want to see how the behavior of pen strokes has evolved. I'm glad I didn't get rid of the Galy!

    Regarding ghosting, reMarkable's coders seem to have found a way to challenge _'BOOX Super Refresh Technology'_ without adding a GPU but as great and intuitive as these companies are... screen technology will to a large degree lead the way because once ghosting and the slow refresh rates are resolved, the emphasis will truly be on the companies ability to adapt as companies like Apple offer devices with some form of e-ink screens. Personally, I think the likes of Boox are heading for a direct clash with the likes of Apple, however, Supernote and maybe reMarkable could possibly carve out a market that might circumvent such a clash, I guess time will tell.

  • @rantsabouttechnology
    @rantsabouttechnology 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

    Could you wink one more time... People just don't do that enough :)
    Seriously though, this is a hardware refresh with a bigger battery to push that Gallery 3 display and power that pen. Because of all this, the screen HAD to be bigger, the device HAD to be thicker. That screen choice dictated every design choice for the whole device. Nothing new except that screen, which seems impressive, to be sure. But that's it.
    Great video, and I love the tone, and you're mini "rant" on distraction-free devices (16:26). You tell 'em Jeff! I have been arguing this point for months.
    As far as the stratification of the market is good for us reviewers, and users in my opinion. The Plama has gone mainstream and that's something I didn't expect and I think that due to this stratification. Good time to be into eInk for sure. Aight I'm done. ✌🏾

I wanted simply to mention that since the announcement of Remarkable Paper pro, one of your "competitor", Voja from Norway, issued a video that already answers some of your interrogations ( pen technology, etc.) as he has been invited as a neighbor at Remarkable headquarters in Oslo and was able to talk with them and put the device to a quick test. I enjoy watching your videos discussing e-ink devices. I myself is a new user and am still getting used to the pros and cons of this type of devices. A few days ago I sent back my RM2 after a month's use. I love the design and how simple it is to use. The browser add-in and Word/Powerpoint add-in are amazing. However, I struggle to use this device for my main purpose - reading and annotating PDFs. I find the background to be too grey and the contrast low. After hearing the release of Paper Pro which is larger with a backlight, I am very excited. However, from the online photos/videos shared by users so far, it seems the Paper Pro's screen is darker than RM2's and the resolution is the same. This really gives me pause. At this moment, I am willing to settle with two devices, one for writing and one for reading. For reading, i am deciding between Go 10.3 (300 dpi), or Boox Tab X (227 dpi but larger and have front light), or Kindle scribble (front light and much whiter background). Do you have any recommendations? Say, if you were to read PDF files at your desk for 2 hours, which device would you use?

    • @jeffreymoss
      @jeffreymoss  9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yeah, I've seen some Reddit posts on the new Pro that leave me a bit underwhelmed. But hopefully it will be much better once I have it in my hands. If you are reading PDFs a lot, as in 2 hours a day, each day of the week, I'd go for the Tab X (keep in mind I have not reviewed the device myself, I'm just going by your use case). Why spend any time trying to resize documents when you can just load your file and go? But, of course, the X does cost a lot. The Go 10.3 is much more affordable. I'm not a heavy user of reading PDFs, but when I do, I like to go landscape on 10" devices such that each page is essentially the top or bottom page of the PDF document. That works pretty well. I wouldn't consider the scribe for that purpose. If color matters in your documents the Note Air 3 C might be a good choice as well.

    🙋‍♂Hi Jeffrey! reMarkable has a nice-looking device with this new iteration. Is the color screen leaps and bounds above Kaleido 3 still needs to be seen. I was not impressed with the way colors worked significantly in the sketching. The color you selected did not appear after a short rendering process and they claim blending will be great for drawing and I cannot see that if I have to wait to see what shade has rendered. Some will claim this is the best thing since "Sliced Bread" and will jump at the opportunity to purchase one. My only concern is that the chipset and 2mb of ram seem low if you need to open up multiple PDFs simultaneously. The focus gimmick is something I personally don't need. My NA3C works fine for me and I can make it focus free as much as I want or need. You make great points. Thank you for sharing your opinion. Kudos from NYC🗽.

      I'm not going to say, I just thought it was an amusing moment I wanted to share. There's a lot of respect among the TH-camr community in the Eink notetaking space and that's one of the things I really like about it. It kind of reminds me of the World's Strongest Man competition. It's not uncommon when two athletes are completing against each other and one finishes the challenge, that that person turns around are starts encouraging the other participant. They are competing against each other, but in a way they are brothers at the same time. I like that a lot. I have that kind of respect for my peers in this space.

      I’ve ordered one. I tried the RM2 on the strength of their return window. My confidence in buying the Pro is based on the same 100 days.
      I’m very interested in the screen size for my personal needs.
      The back light looks very good (compared to boox).
      I’m not too worried about the 229 PPI as I thought the note air 3 was fine. This could be a factor.
      My main need is for a good contrast black. If it looks washed out (like on the NA3) I’ll be sending it back and sticking with the Go 10.3.
      I’m assuming the software will be more developed than stock RM2 as the processor is capable of more.
      Also I need it delivering in a reasonable window (6-16? Days is what i’ve been told) otherwise buyers remorse will take hold.

    reMarkable is really the Porsche of e-ink, who pay utmost effort and full focus in user (driver) experience and built quality. Comparing with competitors they may not have as many functions/gimmicks as others appear to have, but they excel in the area where they deem important and they always strive to achieve the highest possible standard. Only those owning them will understand their differences with other competitors and you can never judge them on spec sheet and internet articles or reviews. Once you are used to them you will find it hard to leave them. Yes, they are expensive, but they worth every penny if you are the kind of user they are targeting.

    What the guy said was that on this device black is not truly black, but a deep darkish blue.
    That is not totally surprising, as it works with CMYW (Cyan Magenta Yellow White), so there are no real black eink particles in Gallery 3, it generates black by having an absence of the other 3 particles.

      I'm surprised to hear that. The Bigme Galy, which is the only other device that had Gallery 3, had that issue as well. But the fix was to just change the contrast settings slightly. Distraction free kind of means putting aside your phone and other devices then focusing on the one tasks. For example, on the Boox GO 10.3, you have the other apps that could pull you away from the task at hand. Just sit in the backyard to read or write away on a specific work item. Yes, you can do with other devices and make yourself focus but the device can help. I have the RM2 and got the Boox GO recently but noticed that I still feel the RM2 is just simple to go back to. If I just want a tablet with eink display, the Boox is fine but if I have a specific task of reading or wring, the RM 2 wins hands down..
    Remarkable could still fix some basic functionality issues with the software for sure. I just can't understand why no custom templates support up to this point. Also allow custom links etc.

      @TheVorst 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You have a good point. It is those apps on those other devices that distract you and complicate the contents writing experience interface. The notification argument is not the problem. 99% of the people have a phone and/or a laptop next to it anyway, that pulls you away if you are not careful. The Remarkable application interface focus on the core writing/reading experience, which makes it very close to the real paper notebook experience. I currently have the Supernote A6X2, which is a nice alternative and has a lot of nice features. But I find it frustrating, when somebody calls me and I want to write something down, I have to start it from a full startup, which takes like 30 seconds (after 1 hour it turns off automatically - user setting). The standby is no option on the Supernote, since it takes too much power so it drawns the battery too much during standby . Apparently the Remarkable 2 is much better in standby mode, so you never need to turn it off !!! So these subtle details makes a big difference for me.
