Very much appreciate you content. You helped me make a decision and I bought both the Manta and Nomad. Thank you.
I'm watching this because I'm looking at the manta and the 10.3 . Price is a consideration but the prime use will be notes. This decision is not easy😂
fantastic review as always, Jeffrey. the one thing I would take a small amount of issue with is the characterization of Supernote's software as "the most professionally oriented." I think it depends heavily on use case. Ratta's refusal to make their devices more general purpose by eschewing the Play Store and generally not optimizing at all for application support outside of first-party software has pluses and minuses in a professional context. I don't think anyone actually gets this "right" per se, but e.g. Boox permits installation of "full" OneDrive, Outlook, and other software that is important from a productivity perspective; you can sideload these on Supernotes but their degree of function varies widely because Play Services are often required for some of their components to work right. if I tried to use Supernote's native support for OneDrive at work, I wouldn't be able to because (and to be fair, this is an arcane if important distinction) the Supernote integration is considered a separate application from OneDrive that has to be separately approved by corporate IT (which will never happen). on a Boox I can install the OneDrive app and be sure that it will work as normal. that's just for Microsoft environments -- plenty of corporate IT environments use Google Workspace for all their services, and if you're trying to use those on a Supernote, you're up a creek. just some things to think about. I agree that the organization features are a huge productivity boost.
Great series! I'm already waiting my pre-ordered Manta but the shipment will start by the end of the month in Europe!
Another fantastic and thorough review of the e-ink tablet. Thanks, Jeff!
your thorough videos are incredibly helpful!
Excellent way to kick off the new year my friend. The reference and flow segments are excellent, couldn't agree more.
Very good and thoughtful review! Excellent job!
Very thorough Jeff, awesome wrapup!
I would think that the first component of an e-reader that you would want to replace would be the screen as these technologies progress, as we continue the quest for pure black on pure white. Not the motherboard or the battery. Hey, when Carta 1400 comes out, how about selling a compatible enclosure and I can move my motherboard and battery over to it? 😂 And maybe make it crystal this time?
I'm with you on the Crystal. And that's a good call out with just selling the shell. Maybe they will do that as well?
Pen loop. I suspect I'll be adding a stick-on second loop as I often do with my paper notebooks.
Jeffrey - another outstanding review. Your reviews continue to be my favorite on all of TH-cam. I am curious if you have any interest or plans in creating a video comparing the Manta with the Viwoods AiPaper and/or an update video on the AiPaper with the big software updates they’ve made. Since these two devices are the only 10.7” Mobius devices on the market, I’d love a more detailed comparison between the devices and to see if your opinions of the AiPaper have changed with the software updates. Thanks for creating such valuable content.
Yeah, I think I'll do that. Esp. when Viwoods drops their next update or two.
my battle with the Ratta and the remarkable line is it better to have all the functions of supernote as far as headers and such or with RMK just downloading a planner aka my deep guide and therefore you get all those type functions of a Ratta plus added syncing between devices
I purchased the Viwoods AIPaper several weeks ago. I like the tablet very much, however, one thing that really bothers me. The 3 buttons on the bottom of the tablet are an issue with me. Viwoods did issue an update where you could disable the buttons because when writing if your palm, wrist, or forearm touched them, it interrupted your writing in mid sentence. The latest update ( 3.3.0 ) has the same feature, however, when writing, if your, palm, wrist, or forearm touches any of the 3 buttons, there is a message at the bottom of the screen saying " Button is Disabled " if you have the buttons turned off. That is fine, except the same problem exists when writing, so in the middle of a sentence, when you touch any of the bottom buttons, your pen strokes STOP, for about 1 second. In a full page, this happens to me 5-6 times. Totally unacceptable. I have reached out to Viwoods, but the response was they are on a " Company Retreat ". I bought this from Amazon, and if this isn't fixed, it's going back, I'll get my money back. Nice tablet, but it is buggy, especially in the calendar with the latest update. This is NOT a Remarkable 2, the pen strokes are really smooth, not feeling like paper. I even tried it using my LAMY with friction nibs, making it better, but not even close to the RM2. For over 500.00 dollars, right now it's not worth it, just my opinion. I have about a 2 week window to return to Amazon, if the button issue is not fixed, it's going back. Just something I wanted to post so others could see this. It's a real issue with me, in my opinion.
another con has to be syncing between Ratta devices, Cal notes don't sync, PDFs you mark up don't sync and the note conflict issue is a major deal breaker
Thanks for calling that out. I use my Manta and Nomad for different uses, so I don't sync between them. So it's helpful to know this issue exists.
Great summary - next up is Sync on these devices; RE: feedback, "Thank you for your feedback" comes to mind; good that you addressed your company feedback IMO
Jeffrey. Kudos sir. Your detail, breadth of examples and overall professional delivery makes this video series important viewing for anyone looking at an E-Ink device. I have been waiting roughly 18 months for the Manta and as a finance professional, couldn't think of a better device for my note taking, coaching, and board meeting files. Your thoughts helped underscore all of the reasons I chose the Supernote system over some of the more "glamourous" devices like the Remarkable Paper Pro. And as an Android user, I am used to having my peers be jealous of my knowledge and my tech. I expect that to continue once my remarkable friends get a chance to try the FeelWrite 2 screen and my HOM stylus. CHEERS SIR!
So after the review……where does it rank? I saw your video of devices you reviewed in 2024. Just curious
I'd put this on top.
Outstanding synopsis of the best and brightest features (and a few cons) of the new Manta! Thank you for this thorough review. THE KEY to the Supernote devices is given in the company's motto itself: "For those who write." IF your work requires a lot of writing, the Supernote is simply unsurpassed in what it offers. Too many people who are keenly interested in the relatively new e-ink technology seem to want a desktop replacement, and that is simply not what these devices are intended or designed for. They will not grind your coffee or wash your dishes, so if that's what you're looking for, go elsewhere. But if you want a fast, convenient, mobile, reliable tool to write down all your most important ideas as fast as possible, the Supernote is it! I wouldn't trade mine for 10 Booxes or the Remarkable or the Viwoods etc. If you WRITE, get the Supernote and be done with it. No need to look elsewhere.
What about the values of the A5X with no load shutdown ? You say the table is equal but as far as i can tell, you only mention a5x2 with no load and say its better if not the best...but wouldnt a5x be even better ?
That's a good point. I never measured the A5X with No Load Shutdown on. Unfortunately, I gave my A5X away so am unable to test that. But that's a fair call out that the Manta and A5X are a bit apples to oranges when I include that subsequent table with that feature on. But in my personal experience, but devices have great battery life and it shouldn't be a concern for folks. For example, I used to use the A5X for a work week with the screen constantly on and only burned 30-40% of the charge. In theory I could have gone two weeks between charges, but I put myself in a routine of charging every week and never worrying about battery life. That worked for me for almost 3 years.
@jeffreymoss ah too bad I mean I imagine it'll scale up similarly with a5x and as such the previous generation should still be better than new one
Very helpful video. Thank you. Specially the "concept of flow" part.
*9:30** - Storage.* After two years I've got just over 1GB of free space on my A5X, which is why I've just ordered the A5X2 which offers the ability to add an SD Card. Yet I still have some concerns regarding how that SD Card is synced/backed-up... worse case scenario is that I have to tare off the back every few days and manually back the card-up to a computer or something, but then will it back-up _'the invisibles,'_ such as annotation files? Personally, I think the device should come with the option of larger internal storage, maybe we'll get that option when they offer replaceable motherboards with different specs?
Yeah, I'm curious what the motherboard options will be whenever that comes to pass. Additional storage options make a lot of sense.
Excellent review, very valuable... Happy New Year
Definitely helpful thank you. E-ink devices are getting so good now that once you have chosen one, unless money is no object, changing from one to another only seems to give marginal gains for the most part. The one thing that might get me changing from the Go 10.3 is a bigger screen size. I’m looking at you Note Air Max and RMPP. All the best to everyone for 2025.
I agree. That's the good news about this space. If you do your research, get the best device for you at the time of purchase, it can last you a really long time.
@@jeffreymoss @davidr1431 it's pretty difficult! I'm looking at getting into a eink note taking device and am looking at the go 10.3 and the manta. The price difference in the eu is between 420 vs 720 or so euros. That's significant money in either case. What format are notes? Are they readable by standard programs?
@@MrWiggenhammer Both use proprietary note formats that can only be read by their respective devices/software platforms. However, both also feature web and desktop apps where you can view your notes, assuming you leverage their cloud services. Boox has a bit of an advantage here in that they can convert notes to PDFs and then you can sync that to an outside cloud storage option. So, for example, I have my Boox devices sync'd to Google Drive and I can view (but not write) my notes there. I'm not familiar with any similar option on the Supernote platform, but if I am incorrect on that point, hopefully someone can post that here.
Thanks for another very thorough reviews. I am currently thinking of switching from Viwoods AiPaper to Manta, one of the review is about the Viwoods’ software and writing feel. I do have a nomad and really love the writing feel but I needed a bigger one at that time. What’s your view on this?
I like both the Manta and the AIPaper. The Manta has much stronger reference functions, so if that's important, going that direction is a no-brainer. I do kind of like writing on the AIPaper more than the Manta, however. Not by a large margin, but the way writing pops on the screen and the pen types (I like to use calligraphy and fineliner styles) are really good. I like the Manta more for my professional work, and the AIPaper more for creating writing, but that's just me. The Supernote is the better device overall, as it's more functional.
A few corrections/additions to the video. First, having a Mobius screen is a pro due to its durability over non-Mobius e-ink screens. I’d consider this a secondary pro, but I know that for others this is a bigger deal and would be more of a primary pro. Rank for yourself accordingly. Second, I learned subsequent to recording this video that the Manta does allow for the connection of audio devices like earbuds or a speaker. However, a lack of a speaker on the device itself remains a secondary con given that many competing devices in the market do. Cheers!
I consider durability/robustness as one of my primary pro. Excellent review, Jeffrey!
A secondary negative is that the Mobius variant uses a darker and yellower fluid suspension for the particles.
Very good video. One question: If you starts with 100% battery, how long Note Air4 C works reading pdf file before recharge battery? Thanks
It's hard to say, but if wifi were off, and no front lighting was being used, you might be able to get over 50 hours of reading in. If you'd use half front lighting, then it might be a bit over 20 hours. But if you are annotating as well, that will add to the drain.
@jeffreymoss thanks
Thank you so much for all your in-depth reviews. It is quite helpful.
Always very informative my friend. I don't know if you are aware but even if you don't use the partner app, you can still download it and use it as a note viewer on your desktop or mobile. You don't even need to sign in to a Supernote account.
Neat!
Could someone please explain more about syncing and storage on the manta? I would like to know what the best way to sync all my work would be. I’m looking for something which is safe, reliable and something that can also be viewed on other devices (iPhone, Computer). As for storage, I’m unsure if you can just sync to an SD card or not (as this maybe the safest and most reliable option for me). If not then I’m unsure if I even need an SD card because the 32 GB of storage seems good enough.
@joshuaedwards3522 I'll take the first stab at this and then Ed (Change-1820) can fill in the blanks. If you create a Supernote account, you can back-up your files on the cloud and then view them on a web browser, desktop client, or mobile device. You can also export those files individually as PDFs from those portals as well. So that's all the functionality you are looking for, but in terms of something that is safe, it depends on how well you trust the Supernote servers (Supernote is a company jointly HQ'd in Japan and China). You can back up your files on other platforms, such as OneDrive, but those are in the native format only Supernote can read. You might be able to view those files in the Partner App, as Ed suggests above, but I'm not clear how that is done and cannot comment on that. In terms of the SD card, there is a bit of effort getting to the place where you can insert and remove the card, so I'm not sure it's a viable option to load files on there and then just remove the card. It's more of an option to extend the storage capacity. Plus, those files will be in that proprietary format, although you can export files on the device as PDFs or PNGs, however I don't believe you can do that in bulk. Hope that helps, but if not, head over to the Supernote subreddit. There is an active community there that can go deeper into your question than I.
Thank you soo much for the detailed response. Once I get my Supernote Manta I will have to try out Onedrive, but if it’s not as I expected then I will just use the Supernote Cloud. I have also seen many people using the Supernote Cloud to screen mirror the Supernote onto other devices, which would be great for my needs. I guess I will just have to see once I get the device (eventually 😅) Thanks again for the reply
Great video. Very informative. Many thanks
Wait. So, if I understand you, you can sync the Supernot to both Google Drive and Dropbox or the other options? I.e. sync to both at the same time? Selectively so, or all content?
I think that's possible, but in practice I've only synced into one service at a time. I'm not sure how the device would behave if the user logged into more than one service.
Always great videos. Keep it up
This even helps me as a new Manta user. :-) Regarding the lassoing and creation of to-do items from Notes, is there some way to add a whole list of Note entries as to-dos without having them all get jumbled into one run-on line? When I lasso a bunch of items I‘ve jotted down, one over the other (as in a list), Supernote just lumps them all together when I lasso them and try to create multiple to-dos. To make things worse, it fuses them together with no space between the end of one task and the beginning of the next. I realize that Ratta is probably assuming most folks will only add to-dos one at a time so as to be able to possibly assign them to a certain time/date, but what if all I want to do is dump a bunch of tasks into my To-Do inbox and then assign them to dates/times later? I have several pages of to-dos in Notes and want to now port them to the To-Do app without having to do so individually. No hope?
Yeah, I can't see how to do that. The system does seem to be set up to add on to-do at a time. I don't even see a way to easily then edit the newly created to-do and split that into pieces. I can see why you'd want to load multiple to-dos however. For example, you could have a bullet list of items and might want to bulk load those as to-dos instead of each one at a time. Personally, I don't use the to-do app, but rather just use the star-marking system to track my to-dos across notebooks. You still have to draw a star for each item, but it's much quicker and more elegant, in my opinion. Then you can do a search to get a list of the to-dos. However, the weakness of that is that you do need to click on each item in the search to see what the to-do is, so it's not a perfect solution either.
@ Yes, precisely: Being able to shovel a bunch of bullet points into the To-Do app would be brilliant. But short of that, your idea with the stars is interesting - thanks for that! Maybe I‘ll even resort to sideloading Trello or some other app for my to-dos, since I‘m the kind of guy who likes to see them all in one place, and shift them from one priority to another on a daily basis, depending on how things are going. Not very well-structured and maybe not the best approach to productivity, but it works for me since I often have to relegate „top priorities“ from today to tomorrow (or later) due to what‘s happening around me. I like being able to create to-dos in handwriting and have them be converted to text, and thereafter easy to shove around from one „priority column“ to another. Committing to days and times often feels too restrictive for the dynamic flow of things.
While listening to your concluding remarks of why the Go 10.3 exists ... I purchased it for multiple cloud interface capability, good note-taking, at a reasonable price. As a budget-concious therapist who takes notes all day and reviews them on several platforms, I LUV the Go.
Very fair review, but I really wish you had demoed writing on the device
Thanks for calling that out. I should do that more on my reviews.
How does typing via Bluetooth compare to the Nomad?
The Nomad is quite a bit better at this point. I wouldn't call the Nomad the best typing experience I've had, but it's pretty close to the best. That lends hope that the Manta will get an adjustment at some point in the future.
@ thank you
It would be wonderful if at some point in the future you could have a series of Supernote instructional videos as you explain all these features very well.
Thanks. I will keep that in mind for my videos in 2025. Other folks have asked for more tips as well, so it sounds like there is some interest for that.
Excellent tips here. I've now switched all the power-saving modes to ON on my Nomad and will do the same the moment my Manta arrives. As for the typing lag: it was the worst I've ever experienced on the Boox GO, but essentially non-existent on my Nomad. FWIW, I never look at the screen when I'm typing, nor at the keyboard as looking at anything distracts from the flow of thoughts. Many thanks for these insights.
You don't look at the screen or the keyboard? That is really interesting. I look at the screen myself. But as I think about how you do it, I kind of get it. Thanks for sharing!
Regarding the Go, it really depends on the refresh setting. I've seen it where the typing is much worse than what we see here with the Manta, but also much better. I can't recall which mode was the best, but it certainly wasn't HD or Regal.
@@jeffreymoss Try it! At night I always use my Alphasmart NEO2, hit the on button (as I always know and can feel exactly where it is), wait 2 seconds, and then start typing away - all in total, pitch-black darkness. Thoughts are then unencumbered by any extraneous visual stimulus. The Alphasmart is IMHO the greatest thing ever created for writers after the fountain pen :)
Very informative specially for newbies like me. Thanks
👍
a bit too late to the party, but do you mind answering if any font can be installed on the system like it would be on,say, Windows OS on a PC? I'm specifically asking about right-to-left languages like Arabic, Persian and Hebrew?
The device supports a lot of languages already, but I can't read them to know if the ones you selected are there or not. If you click on this video, th-cam.com/video/6o1_gukbv5Y/w-d-xo.html, and go to 15:44, you can see the list there. I hope that helps.
@@jeffreymoss ♥ Thank you so much for your time. Okay, just as Jeffrey Moss mentioned, actually at 15:54 of the link he shared, I can see Arabic (العربية) somewhere towards the end of the languages list. However, does this already mean that the user can, for example, tag a page in Arabic? I think it does.
Thanks!
Much appreciated!
I thought Nomad was not Mobius
Correct. That was an error on my table.
I got one, and I can't create an account. I'm unable to use half the software because of that. We're you able to create an account?
I actually just logged in with a Bigme account. They have long since shut down operations, so that's probably why you are encountering an issue.
@jeffreymoss it's strange that the item is still for sale on amazon. It was rude of them to lock out features such as chatgtp and setting up login security on the device.
Manta 😢😢😢 i watched this to see where manta is going to be.im guessing now that manta has been reviewed...it wont make the list for. next year
I should have a review in about a week or so. So far, so good.
Jeffrey, is there a way to clear background apps on the AI Paper ? I can long press on a google app, and " Clear Data " I assume that is removing the app from the background, and improving RAM. Any dedicated way like a Boox tablet ?
Yes. If you long press the center haptic button, a task manager screen will come up.
@@jeffreymoss Okay, thank you ! I had quite a few apps running in the background, this will help ! Probably should read the manual huh ?
@@HH-os7zh I actually didn't find this out until I saw another TH-camr talk about it. So you are following in the rich footsteps of tradition!
With that packet of screws there is plastic piece which is used when you do not want the pen loop attached to the device. That will act as a dust protector, as I heard.
In your opinion, how does it compare to Viwoods AIpaper?
I really like the Viwoods AIPaper, but at work I use the Supernote (A5X currently) and I wouldn't replace that with the Viwoods. I mainly use the Viwoods at home for to-do lists, creative thinking etc. I use the Supernote for work notetaking. The main reason between these two use cases is the reference features of the Supernote (e.g. star-marking system, handwriting search, keywords, etc) that Viwoods simply does not have (can only tag pages). There are other differences, but I think that's the main differentiator for me.
