    Goodness.....I'm thinking of doing this at 55. I'm retired but I'm bored. This was a dream when I was young. I really think I would love this....I also think I'm insane. I'm in better shape then most 30yr olds in my gym so that's not the problem. I may go for it!

    I'm not a trucker and I'm not even an American (I'm a software developer from Europe for god's sake) but I enjoy watching videos like these purely to expand my knowledge on different things across the world. Been playing a game called American Truck Simulator and having great fun so it's interesting to see what's it actually like in real life. Ironically I would actually love a job like this - no bosses, no colleagues, just you organising your own work. I'm sure there are tough times too once in a while like in all industries but I think it's still a great profession.
    Would love to move to US and buy myself a 389 and just cruise from state to state. It'll never happen due to visas and stuff but a man can dream :) Stay safe out there mate and keep up the good work!
    P.S.

      I'm sure there are "down times" in a trucker's "economy". It most likely depends on where you are located versus what the main market is. For example, if you are in the mid-west / south where a decent amount of the market is saturated with farm-harvest "goods", you will likely have a dip in the market come summer / late spring (most places often have best prices per bushel during winter since the "availability" of harvest drops and obviously not a lot of harvest is done during summer, mostly during fall). On the other hand, if you live a coastal city where you deal with import / exports or near a manufacturing plant, the dip in the market would be less significant since they are operating virtually year round.
      Also, I cannot speak for Europe as I am American, but here truckers are literally the backbone of our economy; without them, our society would break down. So the overall job-market for owner-operators has to be plentiful otherwise we're screw. LOL

    $80,000 max on your first truck, doesn’t matter what make, just make sure it’s a Cummins. Why? Because every shop can work on it!!!!

    • @bradgrimm6982
      @bradgrimm6982 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Just make sure its pre emissions, currently cummins have the most problems and shortest longevity. The big network of shops does help with all the breakdowns however.

    • @benjaminjackson2310
      @benjaminjackson2310 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Brad Grimm why would I buy a 20 year old truck with a 20 year old motor, with millions of miles on it?
      Poor fuel mileage, and if it hasn’t been rebuilt, it needs to be soon.
      One mpg is a huge difference on your bottom line$$$$
      Pre emissions engines will get at most 6mpg if you’re nice to it. More like 4mpg
      These new trucks are getting 7 plus mpg. I’m running a Cummins X-15 turned up as far as possible, doing 70mph all day long, and still getting 7 mpg.
      Also Cummins x-15 as far as I know, has almost zero problems with after treatment.

    • @bradgrimm6982
      @bradgrimm6982 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@benjaminjackson2310 X15 still runs 0.8mpg less on same spec vs. all others. Make sure you add 5-8k to your yearly cost for that, it is much better than the previous generation, but still at the bottom of the pack for reliability. Of course we only buy new, avg 8 mpg in the NW, I was just explaining the lesser of those two evils.

    i did the same thing when I switched over to my first T800 after being a 670 for three years. I'm horribly biased but I've never been left stranded by any t8 I've driven. best compromise of all trucks kw offers. built solid for any vocation, light weight, same cab as the w9 for comfort and style and great visibility and turning that you're used to in your Volvo. nice thing about those kw sleepers is you can add the top bunk or just put the storage cubbies above you.

    First it depends on how serious you are as a CDL driver/holder. And how hard you want to or, are willing to run. How long are you willing to stay out. How long have you been driving. Discipline to save. Do you have patience for the long haul. Your first truck will also depend on your finances. And your driving record will also come into play. Used trucks with low mileage. Again how hard are you going to run. A new truck might be better. Used trucks. Need to ask about any existing warranties. Maintenance records. How many miles is it getting,.Any recalls. Or any serious problems with that model or year made. If you wil be putting cash flow into excessive repairs besides usual maintenance. New trucks have pretty good warranties. Still can have recalls. Should have low repair and usual maintenance. All trucks can have issues. Make sure yiu have sufficient cash flow to start up. Also do a Business Account for day to day Business expenses. Second a personal account to pay yourself/personal expenses. Third a MUST a Escrow account for Repairs and Majors Truck issues. Don't touch . Use your Escrow account when needed so not to drain Business Account. I use Bussiness Account to pay for fuel. I can fuel any where. Easy to keep track of fuel consumption monthly. Just my opinion. God Bless.

    I am diggin ur channel man. Just watched a bunch of vids.
    I have been in the business for about 12 years. I gotta say in this day and age I strongly urge people against buying a truck.
    There are plenty of companies out there besides the mega giants that will pay you a decent wage, deal with your maintenance, deal with your loads plans, assist you in other times of crisis and at the end of the day carry all the liability.
    Our OTR drivers start out at .50cpm but there are various incentive lanes including a new dedicated lane for .75cpm with 2500 miles guarneteed, home weekly. 5.5 days out 1.5-2 days in (depends if you want to keep a regular schedule) that is 90k minimum but guys who want to stay out run their full 70 reset on the road and keep running are going to make way more. All with zero liability to them and a job they could put on hold or walk away from.
    With all the hardened CSA standards, Elogs, Emissions standards, general complexity and expenses in maintaining trucks new and old it is hard as a solo OO to make the kinda of money one once could.
    I have seen so many guys who were decent 2400-2600 mile a week drivers who liked being home weekly get sold on the idea of the freedom of owning a truck and then going out on their own to talk to them months later and tell me they go 3-4 months without seeing wife and kids and they aren't doing much better financially. It takes a real badass to make it as an OO today.

    Having been in the business for 31 years and covered everything from company driver, owner operator, dispatcher, and company CEO. How much to spend on any truck is 100% dependent on what your freight pays. Of course the make of truck is all up to the buyers preference. As for the engine, transmission, gear ratio, and horsepower. Remember this and you’ll do fine. Horsepower is fuel mileage and the higher the number in ratio the better the truck will pull. The lower the number, the faster it will go. It’s up to you if you’d rather be able to run top end 120mph and crawl up Monteagle or walk up it like a boss but stay under triple digits. I prefer the latter. Good video as always. Keep it up hand.

    The first question is " Are you knowledgably and financially prepared for trucking? What is each states requirement for you to legally drive a semi in their state? What is the price for each type of requirement? Commercial plates, Commercial insurance, each of the state stickers that you see. On the side of the trucks etc? Then there is the type or type"s of freight you are going to haul? What is the make and type of semi you are going to purches? In addition is the truck a day cab or sleeper? What are the most types of part failures. And what are their costs? what is the price for basic maintainence? How much is a avarage monthly fuel bill? After I complete all of the requirements to get my truck purched. And legally driveable on the road. How do I require work? What do I do if I do not receive new loads? How and when do I get paid after completing my delivery? And these are just a few of the many questions. That you as a new buissness person need to ask.

    I hope you get a new truck & find out what you've been missing. I'm a Transfer Driver for Ryder & I've driven every make & model trucks for over 25 years. I personally don't like Volvo's, especially if it's a sleeper. I don't like the shape of the cab, just to big & not aerodynamic, shakes when your doing over 55mph. Mirrors are to big & clumsy. Windshield is to freaking wide & one piece. Also I had more issues with DPF & check engine lights in Volvo's than in any other trucks. Also I don't like the shape of the turn signal handle & the dumb sound of the turn signals. Also the cruise control is awkward.
    I like Freightliner Cascadia's the most because everything is placed right & to me they have much better visibility & feel more nimble. The power window buttons have little dimples in them so you don't even have to look at them, also the cruise control buttons are on the steering wheel & you don't need to look down to bump your speed up or down. I live near Philadelphia & we have a lot of Freightliner dealers in this area so you never have to drive far if you need a part. Freightliners used to have a bad reputation but they've come a long way over the past 20 years. Peterbilts & Kenworth's are to expensive. Internationals are still having a lot of DPF & sensor issues. I also like Hino's, they are made by Toyota.
    Thanks for you channel I watch all your videos.

      I started in IH 4670 no p/s no a/c barely had heat winter but got some serious trucking done oh btw powered by big cam 350 cummins wasn't fast but get hills done. Pulled flatbed and became a steel hauling fool. But that was then today trucks are so easy to drive but still require expertise of yesteryear. The biggest thing about owning a truck is very low debt going and at least a 10k cash reserve plus your down payment. Stay away from credit cards or if you use one pay it off asap. When I started trucking fuel was 38 cents a gallon and being a company driver still made about 450.00 to 600 per week and home every weekend. The fixed costs that are associated with trucking today is not cheap and hos don't the cause. But if I was able I would be in it still but someone else's negligence took me out. It's still my life and I love it so.

    The paint isn't only for looks. The paint is sprayed on everything to cut down on the corrosion from the salts on the roads from the winter treatments. When looking at the paint, see if it bubbling. If it is, most likely there is rust under the paint. Otherwise, look for areas not painted and ask for it to be painted to protect the trucks.
    On the weight of the W900, they are nice trucks, but you have to cut your weight. I drove one an pulled a end dump. All I could do was light loading and when getting paid by the weight, it hurt the bottom line. I also pulled a reefer with one and was only able to load light loads west and produce east because of how heavy the tractor was. I got a Freightliner Cascadia in 2009 and was able to haul 43000# in the reefer with ease. The truck I miss the most was my 2001 Freightliner Century Class with the Detroit 60 in it. I could haul 45000# in the reefer with half tanks. When paid by the pound of produce you could haul, I was able to make a profit. I sold the last truck in 2011 to walk away from the driving and focus on wrenching. I enjoy wrenching a lot more than driving. I miss driving on the open roads, but man, the traffic is horrible and the cut throat rates are not worth it to me any more.
    Good luck and Keep on a Truckin'!

    As an old B-School (Finance) Prof, I like your approach to trucking and particularly for your considering the truck and trailer as 'assets' as opposed to trucks and trailers as 'extensions of the driver's personality.'
    If I were in your shoes I too would have bought a used Ryder truck with a great drivetrain with its low cost and high reliability for $30,000. What a deal! What a steal! Reliability is a key metric in your business. So are costs.
    I would bet the farm that if you paid $180,000 for the power and one third of that for the trailer, at the current load rates you wouldn't have had it paid-off in two years - especially if the truck weighs one third more than the Volvo you are driving. Two tons more is *always* two tons more that you are hauling and burning fuel on.
    For all of your viewers, please remember this: All of you went out on the road because 'You want to make money.' That's why you got into trucking to begin with; isn't it? So make as much money as you can with what you've got (your truck and trailer; your assets.) Hold out for profitable loads; limit your operating expenses; and prioritize reliable equipment. Common sense.
    Finally, thank you 'TruckingDad' for 'keeping the balance in your life.' (Love the little ones; they are our future.)

    First truck should be no more than 25k. to begin with dont get a big head and run to a peterbuilt or kenworth dealer, stay with fleet liquidation sales or penskie used sales most large fleets have direct used sales of nice spec trucks, stay away from the chrome and long hoods you out to turn a profit and try to make a buck, looks and chrome wont pay the bills.

    My experience is wait and save up for a new one or rent because buying something used you always risk losing all your money and going bankrupt. It doesn't matter if it's going good now, eventually your engine might completely go. I've been through it before. Always playing catch up after repairs. It's a nightmare.
    I've also seen what a brand new truck can do and that is security and not looking over your shoulder and stressing whether it's going to take all the money you have.
    The best position possible is to have enough cash to buy a new one. Maybe finance $20k and the rest of it cash. That could be $130-150k saved. Yes it's a mf to save that much but this business is about longevity. A new truck has a good warranty. You're covered for 3 to 5 years. Then you get another new truck.
