The maxforce engine was made by Navistar and only found in International trucks, the Paccar engine is made by Paccar obviously and a better engine than the maxforce which was pretty much a POS. I am not a big Cummins fan but if I was buying a truck these days I would probably go with Cummins mostly because if you are somewhat mechanically inclined you can do a lot of work on it yourself and Cummins will supply the knowhow free with their Quickserve account and like you said there is a lot of shops that can work on them.
Back in the early 70's when I was a teenager growing up on a hay farm my dad bought a 53 Mack Thermodyne with a blown Cummins engine that had been sitting for a couple of years. Dad had been a mechanic in the Air Force. I helped him rebuild the engine and we had a cab-over for hay delivery that was classified as a farm vehicle that I could drive at 16 years old. Dad had never rebuilt a Cummins but he followed the factory service manual. It had 3 gear shifters so it had 24 forward gears. I ended up hauling freight with it as a summer job in Florida when I was in college. That job motivated me to get my Business Degree. Good pay but it was hard work for 12+ hours a day. And now I am in semi-retirement and driving CDL Hot-shot three to four days a week.

I know in Canada its different- most candaian trucks don't have APUs but do have a bunk heater, but I head if its like -45 degrees celsius - you have idle the truck the whole night or the next day it won't start
Any Peterbilt or KW dealer can work on an MX13, same as having to go to Freightliner to get work done on a new DD15. I’m 120k miles into my second MX13 with no issues, sold my previous truck a year ago with 600k on an MX13 and had no issues with it. Both ones were 510/1850.
@@chrismoody5977 My current truck is 7.67mpg for the year. I track my fuel mileage on paper every time I fill up. Weight is never a concern for me so if I’m stopping for fuel I top the tanks off all the way and fill my def.
@@chrismoody5977 Hi My average has been 7.8 mpg. I will take that all day long. And as for reliability I cannot fault the MX13. I am now on my third Pete with the MX13 and for sure I will continue with this set up.
To add to what has been said, if you’re buying a truck newer than 09-10, the chances of finding a CAT engine will be slim, as Caterpillar got tired of trying to do the EPA’s emissions dance and so stopped making commercial truck engines in 2010.
Yeah after 2006 the Cat engines went to crap, they closed down the Mossville engine plant where i worked and moved it to Texas. The Cat 3406 Acert from 2006 and older is the BEST ENGINE.
Man I missed watching your video during the time I was on my CDL school!!!! Great video and thanks again to share with us 🔥 15:44 ''you suppose to got it with the 13-speed when it's a RED spliter '' ✌
When there is a splitter on the side of the stick, you can tell what speed it is from the color of the splitter. Red-13 Blue-15 Grey-18 There is also the 10 over, I think it's a red splitter, but it doesn't have the hi/lo in the front because it's basically a 5 speed that you have to split every gear
I run day cabs now, but my last OTR was a 16 Cummins pro star, the factory APU was fine @ 30-40 degrees, but could not cut the mustard on a 0 degree north Wisconsin evening, and there wasn't a trick in the book to over ride the auto shutdown system, ugh, and screw DPF, had a plain jane 06 9400, was the best truck I ever ran :)

All of 2005-2006 we got unlimited overtime cause they were pushing out all the Cat 3406's they could before the new emissions of the 2007. The older 3406 Cats were in my opinion the BEST ENGINE EVER!
Hey Justin the mx motor is not a maxxforce motor the mx is paccar motor maxxforce was international motor which was actually a c13 cat internals and block international head and emission controls. Cat sold the rights to international. To each his own but stay away from emission motors and for sure stay away from cummins they are nicknamed cumapart for a reason. I've got one 12.7 detroit and two c15 cats inframed the detroit with head for around 15000.00 done the cats with head for around 18500.00 each. The transmission shifter has a red spliter button it's a 13 speed if the spliter is blue it's a 15 speed (don't make those trans anymore) if spliter is grey it's an 18 speed. As a diesel mechanic for 10yrs I can tell you that paccar is a sister company of cummins almost everything is interchangable with the Cummins and their good engines not the most powerful but their great work horses and more affordable

Alot of the new peterbilts have what's called smart air a 4 battery system apu from the factory runs ac for about 14 or so hours before it will automatically start the motor until batteries are charged
Loved this video been driving over two years and wanting to fulfill my dream of getting my custom w900. Long way rings but motivated. This was also the best video yet amazing work.
Note the DDC DD 13-15-16 DPF one box has replaceable DPF filters and all components are replaceable. Many times techs replace entire components based on mileage Buying used get the shop to back up the filters. Most Freightliners are turned in by big flees at or near 500k Get a sales agreement on emissions devices of you can. I'd also request test drive with a tech and DL8 diagnostic running during the drive.any faults ask for repair first. This would be on any truck. Realize Freightliner and Western Star run Detroit and Cummins.
Cats aren’t that bad to rebuild, cummins seems to run higher from those I’ve talked to. I have a cat and have talked to multiple people who have recently rebuilt theirs for mid 20’s. If you take it to cat it will be higher. Cummins seems to make it to the 6/700’s , a well maintained cat will make it to a million miles. Detroit seems to split the difference. Cats are definitely expensive to maintain but go further between rebuilds. Detroit is the cheapest, can rebuild those for less than 15. (60 series) best engines: cummins n14, detroit 60, cat 6nz
When i worked at the Caterpillar Mossville Engine Plant back in 2007 when the new emissions engine came out it was the downfall for Caterpillar and its engine division. We would have engines that would fail the hot test dyno testing and they would tell us to still ship it and they would fix as warranty work, hell they had trucks burn to the ground on tye highway. God knows i had fires in my test cell every nite when it came to the 2007 emission control engines.
4 out of 7 of my semi trucks I owned were salvage no problems with them one had a front end damage nothing crazy one had a new cab because it rolled on its side as long as you stay away from a maxforce you will be fine an apu is key
I drove both auto and manual. I prefer manual cause I like to have full control of my truck. From what I've heard, it's more costly to work on an automatic transmission. Also I have a 12.7 detroit and I love the motor, cheap on parts and alot of people can work on them.
Hello Justin just watched your video about buying trucks.you talked about Freightliner having a one box. I work for Cummins Tampa FL. 42 years. I know all about egr,dpf ,scr and doc. Is the one box that you talked about in Frerightliners a whole assemble that is welded together. Can you explain more.
Manual transmission last longer, cheaper to repair, more affordable trucks are manuals AND best of all they are the most engaging and fun to drive, and God knows for them long trips we need to stay engaged.
I have Two M2-106 with Cat Motors without any issues we bought both Pre Emission @300,000 miles and both don’t use a drop of Oil or Leak a Drop Either they are Both Dump Trucks where we Run the heck out of them, we are definitely a Freight liner Fan the thing is Western Star, Mercedes, Volvo all owned by Daimler Chrysler
My 2016 Volvo has 850Kmiles(more than 23k engine hours)on it and I haven’t needed to do an overhaul. I haven’t too many issues with the after treatment system either. I probably won’t be doing an overhaul until it reaches a million miles
I drive a 23' peterbilt with a packard And to be honest with you I get between 8 to 10 miles to the gallon I wish it had the Commons in it I wish it had the Common And it
I got a 23 kw 680 Currently has 189160 on the ticker, MX13 on it's 2nd set of injectors and the engine light is on again. I can only imagine it's the same problem as always, time to start looking for injectors again before it goes into Lymp mode again.😢
Driven both manual and automatic I absolutely loathe the automatics. Also have experience with the x15 and dd15 I prefer the detroit slightly more because the Jake just seems a bit stronger.
18 speed has grey splitter button on the shifter, 13 speed has a red splitter button.. quick easy way to tell from outside🍻 EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculation
Thanks for the video. Currently a year in to my flatbed career . Plan to have 80k this year. Hoping to have 50k for down payment and 30k for uhoh money if I end up buying my own truck.
MX-13 is actually a PACCAR motor manufactured by Cummins for KW and Peterbuilt. It's not a bad motor, but the electronics and DEF is problematic. You will see lights on the dash quite a bit with the PACCAR system. My T680 is a 2016 and I'm constantly seeing warning lights.
Sorry, kinda responding as I watch, but to tell which transmission a truck has between 10, 13, or 18 speed, the color of, or lack there of, of the side splitter. If there’s no side splitter, only the front one, it’s a 10. Red side splitter it’s a 13. Gray side splitter it’s a 18.

Bro - the rock chip in your windshield made my eye Twitch the entire time!
Thanks for sharing.
Great video, thanks for sharing all this information.
What would you recommend between volvo and kenworth
Volvo but really it’s the engine that makes the truck … depends on if your starting out or if you’re established and running TH-cam content
JUSTIN your wife is lucky to have u u workaholic 😆 🤣 God bless hopefully these times get better for the industry
I had 3 paccar motors never a problem
Great information Bro, thanks for sharing
This is great information thank you
One thing you didn’t cover pick up a dye kit that will show if there is anything like Antifreeze mixed in the Oil.
Manual transmission last longer, cheaper to repair, more affordable trucks are manuals AND best of all they are the most engaging and fun to drive, and God knows for them long trips we need to stay engaged.
That was a good listen about engine thanks a lot
I have Two M2-106 with Cat Motors without any issues we bought both Pre Emission @300,000 miles and both don’t use a drop of Oil or Leak a Drop Either they are Both Dump Trucks where we Run the heck out of them, we are definitely a Freight liner Fan the thing is Western Star, Mercedes, Volvo all owned by Daimler Chrysler
Great video. Very informative. Thanks for taking the time. New to your channel.
My 2016 Volvo has 850Kmiles(more than 23k engine hours)on it and I haven’t needed to do an overhaul. I haven’t too many issues with the after treatment system either. I probably won’t be doing an overhaul until it reaches a million miles
Thank you, very informative and advanced advices, definitely like!!
Get pre emissions truck or find a good tuner. On cummins or.DD.or d13.
My 12.7 Detroit d deck 4 did 1.3 million miles before in frame
POOR HYUNDAI 😂😂😂 Great vid ! Look to become an owner op this year thanks for the tips
I had issues with paccore,im with you ,cat is a good motor but since they don't make them anymore parts are going be crazy high
18 speed has grey splitter button on the shifter, 13 speed has a red splitter button.. quick easy way to tell from outside🍻
EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculation
Thanks for the video. Currently a year in to my flatbed career . Plan to have 80k this year. Hoping to have 50k for down payment and 30k for uhoh money if I end up buying my own truck.
Did you get a truck?
@@capriceboney5394 negative. Got out of the industry all together
Just constant great information!
I’ve been told that if an injector goes out in a volvo motor you have to replace all to get warranty! Former boss told me that!!
Thanks for the video 👍
No problem 👍
Thanks this was very helpful
MX-13 is actually a PACCAR motor manufactured by Cummins for KW and Peterbuilt. It's not a bad motor, but the electronics and DEF is problematic. You will see lights on the dash quite a bit with the PACCAR system. My T680 is a 2016 and I'm constantly seeing warning lights.
Volvo VNL series started from 2003- 2018 with the same body lines.
Appreciate the insight bud
I just brought a 17 vnl 630 with a d13 526k miles and im stressing a lil more then normal with just getting leased on with a company
IDC if the year is 2197... im still using a manual.
For owner operators your I promise you get you a glider truck easy to work on parts are easy but if you get any of these new trucks good luck
It's a paccar motor not max force motor in the Pete. Max force is International
Great informative video. This is going to help first time buyers. Truck it safe Justin 😎
APU is a HUGE plus for sure. The opti-Idle and bunk heaters suck! I hated it in my ‘18 freightliner.
You keep calling the paccar MX13 a maxxforce. That is the funniest mispronounciation of a paccar motor I have ever heard. Thanks for a good laugh.
Anytime 😁🤘🏽
Great vid, I have watched it a few times. Please turn the motor off next time it makes it hard to actually hear you at some points.
