Hi Jake, I am a new collector. Can I buy raw cards from TCGPlayer and eBay that can be graded as a 10? I suspect that I am getting the left over cards that the sellers don't think it is a 10. Or am I being too cynical? Keep up the great work. Subscribed.
Hey Van - first off, thanks for watching and subbing! This is a great question, and I’m glad you asked it. I RARELY buy cards on tcgplayer and I have to say my overall experience hasn’t been great. I pretty much never want to buy cards if I don’t have well lit photos of the cards. The only time I’ve done it on tcgplayer is with really cheap cards that are < $10; that way if you take the risk you’re not out hundreds of dollars on high end cards. The ugly truth is that it’s good to be cynical in this hobby, especially when the hobby is booming and a lot of bad actors come into the hobby with ill intentions. That being said, don’t let the cynical side of you consume you. There’s lots of great sellers that are honest so always keep that in mind. All that in mind, if buying in person at local card shops/ card shows isn’t feasible, I would stick to eBay where you can request additional pictures from sellers. Some may say no, some may get annoyed, but there’s a lot of people that will happily help you. I hope that answers your question!
@@Johto-JakeThank you for your thorough reply! Much appreciated! Overall, I have better experiences with eBay sellers as I can at least check out the pictures. With TCGPlayer, it is more of a crapshoot with often no pictures. I am inspired by your binder and in the process of collecting the Brilliant Stars Trainer Gallery. Please keep up with your videos!
A couple months ago, I really wanted to buy a few paldean fates gardevoir SIR's cause I knew it was criminally underrated and would go up (unfortunately I'm like broke rn lol). Sure enough, it seems to be skyrocketing
One of the top 5 SIRs from Scarlet & Violet! Did you end up getting one for your collection or never got around to it? Last I checked it’s pretty affordable raw!
@@Johto-Jake I've had one for a while luckily :) but I knew that if i had the funds to buy multiple, it would have been a wise investment lol. absolutely beautiful card irl with insane texture!
@ with all due respect that is amateur thinking. That Moonbreon is gonna be worth exactly zero dollars in the next one to 200 years. See I’m thinking long-term. That’s why I’m trading all of them for every copy of Quaxly there is. Then in one century I’m strutting down Gold Street baby.
Will find out soon. Sent in two Raichu #211 cards that are really minty. I think one might get a 9 unfortunately but it could maybe get a 10 and then there’s one that I’m almost certain should get a 10
That’s a fantastic card to do this with. I recently picked that up in a 10. Keep me posted on how it turns out once you get your grades back. Wishing you good luck 🤘I hope you get multiple 10s!
Despite it being a trading card game, I've never really traded much. Where do you do this? Who would want to give up their PSA 10 Umbreon for a bunch of lower value cards? Serious question. I'd love to trade up, but just don't know how it works. I have a PSA 9 Latias EX and the big chase Pikachu EX also in a PSA 9, from Surging Sparks. What do I do from here? Do I trade these up for a PSA 10 Charizard EX from 151, for example?
First off, thanks for watching and for the great question! My approach isn’t necessarily a linear one, but I’ll break it down to help with your situation. The example I gave illustrates selling into a new (higher) value to reinvest those gains into bigger chase cards. For your two PSA 9s, the strategy depends on your risk tolerance and how much you’re already into those cards. Did you pull them, buy them raw and grade them, or purchase them already graded? The amount you’ve invested so far will play a key role. If you’re into them at a lower cost than their current market value, you might consider cracking them and selling them raw, especially since ultra-modern PSA 9s can be difficult to move. Alternatively, focus on selling them graded for as much value as possible to reinvest. With those funds, consider targeting raw cards with high potential to grade as PSA 10s. For instance, think of a card like the Alakazam example I mentioned. Find minty raw cards you can buy in multiples, grade them, and aim for 10s. While there’s some inherent risk in this (since 10s aren’t guaranteed), the goal is to create gains by flipping raw cards into high-grade slabs. You can then use those gains to work toward your bigger collection goals. Hope that helps, and best of luck with your journey!
@@Johto-Jake Very helpful thanks! Yeah I got a deal on both of those grade 9s, so I'm technically "up" but not necessarily a ton. Just like 10-15% below market value. But I see what you're saying, it's not that your directly trading a stack of Alakazams for a Moonbreon, just that you're working your way up to have the funds FOR it. Alakazams are a good example because you take the risk of tripling the value for a PSA 10. But it'd get even more risky with something like a raw Moonbreon, since while you could close to double the value if it's a 10, you just break even otherwise. It stinks that grade 9s are so often the same value as a raw card.
Still have yet to pull the alakazam! Can’t wait to get it :) have over 50 packs to rip open for it. Any doubles are getting graded and traded for those high end chases. Thanks for the tips! This been super helpful!
This is just one example and 151 singles are not the only cards you can do this with! Think outside the box, there’s always opportunities when all eyes are following the hype of whatever it is that’s popular or being talked about. As far as grading goes it’s educated gambling, the more you grade the more you learn what to look out for. Once you build confidence and become more knowledgeable about grading your risks are reduced and your gem rates increase. Thanks for watching 🤘
