There's another reason to sleeve the cards before inserting them in the binder: Those pages with the soft texture in back can actually leave an imprint of that texture on a card (if you insert a bare card and there's enough pressure put on it over time). Also, If you want to use ring binders instead of the ones with a fixed number of pages, you can buy side-loading pages, including the kind with that soft texture in back.

Can't thank you enough for this video. Got a binder at the store as the Pokemon 151 got me back into collecting recently but remembered that some of my old cards from back when I was a kid where in pretty bad condition despite having used a binder back then (never got anything precious by internet standards ruined since I never got anything better than a rare card, but still a loss for the childhood memories). I also had a recent issue with a collection of vintage books getting ruined due to bad storage and so it's been on my mind a lot of late. So I end up here and - I kid you not - the binder at 03:05 is basically the exact same make as the one I got. Different cover but otherwise same O-rings, same cheap sheets, same zipper, same pointless leash. Returned it and got an more appropriate binder for the same price (less pages but I figure I'm starting small so it's no big deal and I can always buy more if I need to). You, sir, have saved me a lot of misery in a few years. Thank you!

I dont use perfect fits, I like the extra buffer of the standard size. The side loading binders with the soft back are the best option imo! I use the ultra pro binders, but I'd like some with zippers! Quality vid :)
Yeah I stored a bunch of my old collector cards outside in my shed because I never knew that the blistering heat and humidity would essentially destroy them. Ironically my Pokémon cards held up better than my other ones. I also learnt the hard way to NOT lay them flat unless it is a SINGLE binder. This makes it much harder for me to store my card binders because I have limited space...so I have learnt to use small gaps behind furniture as maskeshift shelves (if it's too tight of a fit then I don't do it and I always clean to ward off dust).
Wow Pat you’ve been reading my mind I was hoping someone will make a video like this because my binders have been making my cards curve and I’ve been buying new Binders more expensive ones to try to fix that issue
Love how you gave details on the all the binders untill you got to the ones you'd suggest/preffer, only showed a snippet of them with zero detail, real helpful,
This was great, Pat, thank you. I was looking for a video just like this a month or so ago when I was trying to decide whether to plough on with ring binders or convert to higher end binders. In the end, I've stuck with ring binders as I can make custom labels that make the folders look great on my shelf. Am wondering about sleeves (the boxy/cardboard type) for the binders for added protection from dust though. As ever, much love and appreciation from across the pond.
My favourite thing is a top loader binder, just like a normal binder but the pockets are big enough for top loaders, really gives peace of mind for those vintage sets
This is all amazing info, I try to steer people away from ring binders all together for cards. Honestly by the time you buy better quality pages and a dring you are better off at least getting a side loader fix page ultra pro with the strap. Just don't overload binders. I know a lot of people prefer direct fit but I prefer penny sleeve myself for binder cards. I feel like they fill the space better, and better protect the card / don't damage the card by being too tight fitting causing light scratches, scuffs, abrasions. I used to direct fit and penny sleeve but just penny sleeve now. (My binders are pretty much never mobile / moved though, this might factor into preference) I only have 1 vaultx binder, the rest are ultra pro side loaders. I also have too many toploaders and card savers in use to count. I team bag and shallow tote card savers, single row standing vertical, never stack. Depending on humidity I recommend dessicant balls, rechargable ones that change color when they draw moisture and can be dried in the oven can be bought in bulk tubs and put into pouches. I use them for storage and around my binders etc. I noticed holo warping early on in collecting from humidity and this seems to have helped/saved me 100%. Depending on your area/climate there can be a few factors to consider that would vary. I mean I wonder about just oxidation etc on cardboard over time. I love the channel and info you are providing in your videos.
For my binder/master sets I use ultimate guard quad row zipfolio vault X perfect fits for every common/reverse/holo and vault X perfect fit going down and ultra pro penny sleeve going up for all hit cards. For my top loaded cards I use an ultra pro penny sleeve ultra pro premium top loader and an ultra pro resealable team bag over it for extra protection then I store them in an etb
PRO TIP READ TILL THE END: put the card in a sleeve upside down and then right side up in a top loader. This seals it so the top of the card is protected from the sleeve and the bottom from the top loader. Now buy a 4x6 photo album. You can add pages and the pages are screwed in with a bolt that screws into a long cylinder nut (so screw doesn’t damage the page), no ring. Put 2 top loader cards in one 4x6 picture slot and boom. Good to go. I highly recommend a 4 or 6 picture page with the opening in the middle of the page for all picture slots. The synch of edges from one photo slot to the one beside it of the top loaders will keep the cards inside much better. Other formats for the openings may result in the top loaders falling out. Disclaimer: you should turn the pages rather delicately or the top loaders may fling out and the pages can tear if you’re not careful if you get a cheaper page quality
In the other video about scratching Chanseys, you didn't try toploaders - curious as to why. Also, here I was therefore wondering about toploader binders. Are they guilty of more Bad Binder Behavior, or are they the answer we are looking for to protect our collections? Would be awesome to know your input on toploaders and toploader binders, even if it was just a quick reply. Thanks
The problem with the pages is that they’re small, only fitting 4 on one side and also in my quest to find one, they sell out very frequently. They are way better than just sleeveing your cards though. The important thing is to sleeve your card upside down and then put it into the top loader right side up to protect both top and bottom. The binder still has the ring which can cause damage and the number of pages it can fit is limited. What I did and suggest is picking up a 4x6 photo album without rings. It has no chance of warping your cards even in the top loaders like the ring can (trust me, learned from tough experience thinking top loaders meant it was always safe). 2 top loaders fits in each photo slot. Just get one where each page is 2 pictures wide and where both picture slots are accessed from the middle. This ensures with the edge to edge of your top loaders that your cards won’t simply just fall out, at least not easily. If the cards are going to stay in that spot, you can also add double sided tape to the back of the top loader if you’re concerned about them falling out. I haven’t done this though because I like to be able to move my cards around easily if needed. A little extra care turning pages is all you need to keep it neat, in order and the cards staying nice and snug in their slots,
I just got back into collecting my cards and still have my cards from the WOTC era - and this has been a super helpful video - especially when you thought you were collecting/storing the right way when you were 13 lol. I appreciate all the tips!
Storing up right for those with d rings 9 page sleeves are the worst options. You will need to store it downwards and let the sleeves hanging so the cards does not warp when the population is not enough to make it stand in the 1st place. And make sure all cards are populated and no odd one out to prevent those cease.
...Almost instantly went and switched out Binders after watching 😂 Thanks for the helpful tips! I was afraid I didn't have a D ring to transfer to but Thankfully I had an unused one. Makes everything 10 times better! 👍
Man I wished I saw this sooner lol I started recollecting Pokemon in 2021 and have literally been doing every single BAD binder behavior up to this point because I was just replicating how I did it as a kid back in the day 😭 I've already noticed on a few occasions that the top loading sleeves get some dust around the opening that I periodically try and wipe away. Idk why in the world I never thought of zipped binders either smh I'm gonna implement all of these asap thanks so much 🙏
Now I am far from an amateur collector as I have been Collecting for a long time and I just don't collect in one Type of area. I have a wide range of different types of collections. With that said I did find this video Very well put together and very informative. Especially for those who are just getting started in collecting. I actually recommended this TH-cam video to my brother who has 2 young boys and they're getting more and more involved with pokemon collecting. So again, I found this video well informative and very well put together so much that I recommend this video to my brother for him to watch it with his 2 boys. That's it great video and I look for more good content in the future and I have just subscribed to your channel my friend.
man, i put two cards in one slot but i got no choice, i got to many cards and tiny binders that can't store much, but my cards are still not scratched, i gotta get bigger binders but over here i can barely find any type of binder so when i found the small ones i was like jackpot, but ill really try to find big ones. this video really helps me take much more care of my cards and whats good for the cards and what isn't.thanks a lot!!!!
I always use the d ring binder and my cards never got damaged and for someone who owns a d ring binder i really recommend it and i used i d ring binder before i even saw this video lol and ultra pro pages are very useful and great also really good for a collector who wants their cards in great condition
Learned from experience that ring binders are really bad for cards whether it be circle or d ring. Don't chance it fellow collectors, I lost cards to binders and they were not overstuffed. Just use the portfolios (high quality ones are pricey but worth it). With portfolios the weight on top of it doesn't matter and you can store it flat if necessary. I don't have shelves to store ring binders upwards so I had to go out of pocket and reorganize my entire collection to avoid damage. People say double sleeves with perfect fit are best for max perfection too. I recommend though probably not necessary since portfolios can zip the sides closed. I have a lot of out of print cards so not chancing anymore loses.
I double sleeve my cards before putting them in the binders. I use the perfect fit sleeve and then use the Pokémon promo sleeves that come with each set.
I've been using so many of these "bad binder behaviors" for so long, most of my cards are alright because I don't touch them a lot, but I will be looking for a new binder when I go to the store :) I've been getting more and more rare cards and I should really give them the treatment they deserve
I only collect cards and have a preferred method (also use the binders mentioned in the video). When I store my pokemon cards I always sleeve them with the Ultra Pro brand or a similar brand that has a thick protector. I put my cards in the sleeves upside-down so the bottom of the card is at the opening. When they go in the binders they are upright so the top is protected by the sleeve and the botton protected by the page. As for putting in multiple in a slot I only put 2 cards (sorted in numerical order) because I find it to be more secure due to the thickness of the cards and sleeves make the slot tight and prevent them from falling out.
I'd say if doing cheap because low of money, I would recommend the format. Sleeve the card not perfect fit. (They can bend the cards.) And put the sleeve on from top of the card to the bottom. So decrease the chances of losing it. Only do one side. Put the cheap cards (common or energy) on the ring side and put the more expensive cards in the middle. And finally dont fill the binder to the brim make sure they are flat and close with ease. That would be my suggestion having a cheap binder when can't afford the more expensive binders.
This made me spend my last 25$ on a new Acid free non PVC side loader and penny sleeves just to fix the collection I'm trying for my daughters and son thanks for the info on what not to do much appreciated
No I am afraid to check my old collection... I have 10 binders with cards and I did not sleeve them before storing them in the binder and for sure stored them back to front. I just bought some perfect fit sleeves hopefully most things are still ok. 🤞

I have two of the zip up card books and I use them to store my cards (Mostlys Vs, EXs and GXs), the opening is on the side and I always sleeve my cards before they go in so my cards have remained in really good condition. Didn't know the not storing them on top of each other them thing so good thing I found this ^^
When at 3:33 you say "top of the line, I really enjoy these binders here", which binders are "these" if you could share? Or is "top of the line" the brand? Sorry it wasn't clear :) Also, about those, don't those cards on the first page on the left, and any cards close to the binding, get bent because of the bend in the page? I'm sure most MTG players who're serious about storing cards might not use those? I'm curious because it seemed like they could bend based on the video! Thank you for making this!
I put them in one of those phone case holders so that they don’t get scratched or anything sometimes and they don’t even fall out they don’t get scratched nothing

I dont use perfect fits, I like the extra buffer of the standard size. The side loading binders with the soft back are the best option imo! I use the ultra pro binders, but I'd like some with zippers! Quality vid :)
I use ultra pro too
Yeah I stored a bunch of my old collector cards outside in my shed because I never knew that the blistering heat and humidity would essentially destroy them.
Bad Binder Behavior is gonna be stuck in my head now. Thanks!! 😂
As a grown adult about to start collecting cards, I just watched a bunch of your videos. Thank you
Another awesome video. Really love your editing style too. Inspires me to make better videos. Keep up the awesome work.
And sealed items are placed carefully in a storage container with not too much things stacked on top of each other
PRO TIP READ TILL THE END: put the card in a sleeve upside down and then right side up in a top loader.
BAD BINDER BEHAVIOR!
Lol
BAD BINDER BEHAVIOUR!!!! 😂
Sleeve and load the open side into a top loader the best advice I've ever been given for my top cards
I cant afford a binder so I have just have all of my pokemon cards in a stack on my desk, even the super rare ones
BAD-BINDER-BEHAVIOR
@ATOMICspring72 can't be bad binder behavior when you don't have a binder
I'm so glad that I decided to switch binders and always was careful with my cards no matter the binder I had before hand.
Storing up right for those with d rings 9 page sleeves are the worst options. You will need to store it downwards and let the sleeves hanging so the cards does not warp when the population is not enough to make it stand in the 1st place. And make sure all cards are populated and no odd one out to prevent those cease.
I love VaultX binders this video is honestly top notch and everyone needs to see/hear this.
3:03 A lot of kids use these kind of binders from amazon.
I was one of them😭🙏
...Almost instantly went and switched out Binders after watching 😂 Thanks for the helpful tips! I was afraid I didn't have a D ring to transfer to but Thankfully I had an unused one. Makes everything 10 times better! 👍
what will happen if you dont have rings at all ?
I use those cardguard binders so it’s nice to know that there good in your eyes

Hey Pat! I have a binder with a zipper but, honestly, it’s created really well and, best part, no o rings or d rings.
Thank you for the tips! I'm super focused on preserving my cards properly and this helped a ton
Idk why in the world I never thought of zipped binders either smh I'm gonna implement all of these asap thanks so much 🙏
I kind of want one of your binders
I always use the d ring binder and my cards never got damaged and for someone who owns a d ring binder i really recommend it and i used i d ring binder before i even saw this video lol and ultra pro pages are very useful and great also really good for a collector who wants their cards in great condition
i have a ultra pro binder lol
i like ur vids
These videos helped me when I first started collecting again.
I recomend the z-Folio LX
I double sleeve my cards before putting them in the binders. I use the perfect fit sleeve and then use the Pokémon promo sleeves that come with each set.
My old binder WAS the definition of “BAD.BINDER.BEHAVIOR” 😭🙏
Love this! Super helpful as a parent getting back into Pokémon with their kid!
Hahaha. Never got into it as a kid but my daughter loves Pokemon so we both started a collection. Have no idea where to start. Haha. Good luck
Oooooooh so THAT'S how you store cards. I just put it in the binder. This was great thank you. Will have to share this with my daughter
i watched this 2 months ago & “ BAD BINDER BEHAVIOR “ has been stuck in my head till this day
I use VaultX binders and I love being an affiliate.
I've been using so many of these "bad binder behaviors" for so long, most of my cards are alright because I don't touch them a lot, but I will be looking for a new binder when I go to the store :) I've been getting more and more rare cards and I should really give them the treatment they deserve
One of the most important videos for the hobby
I have one binder, and its protecting the cards, I got it for Christmas and when I saw it I was so happy.
This video help me to buy a Pokémon binder thank for this video
Ordered a Gem loader binder a couple of weeks ago. Just got it and my top loaded cards are right at home in a sick zippered binder.
Just for completion: Don't use binders, that have only two rings, best use four. Awesome video, thanks for sharing those tips!
Definitely could have used this 20+ years ago, but I'm doing it right now, thanks!
I had to pat myself on the back when you went through the binders 😂 Proud of my vault x one 🤣
Ok this is what I needed. But not yet, I'll have to come back and actually watch!
But comments are important for reminding me to come back.
You can also buy a binder that zips up.👍Thanks for the helpful tips.
someone needs to mention the cinematography here
it's nuts
This made me spend my last 25$ on a new Acid free non PVC side loader and penny sleeves just to fix the collection I'm trying for my daughters and son thanks for the info on what not to do much appreciated
We love everything you teach us. Thank you for everything you post
No I am afraid to check my old collection... I have 10 binders with cards and I did not sleeve them before storing them in the binder and for sure stored them back to front. I just bought some perfect fit sleeves hopefully most things are still ok. 🤞
VIDEO IDEA: I think your the perfect channel to do a review on the top 5 card protection companies a lot of new companies out their now that I use and I also have heard that most are made in the same factory… none the less think this video idea has a lot of talking points and great info every card owner has had thoughts about
Valtx is a goat of a binder personaly there the best and are a binder to go for.
I have two of the zip up card books and I use them to store my cards (Mostlys Vs, EXs and GXs), the opening is on the side and I always sleeve my cards before they go in so my cards have remained in really good condition.
Didn't know the not storing them on top of each other them thing so good thing I found this ^^
I can't believe my mum three away my 1st edition Pokémon set when I was younger I want to cry most days when I see these vids 😢
When at 3:33 you say "top of the line, I really enjoy these binders here", which binders are "these" if you could share? Or is "top of the line" the brand? Sorry it wasn't clear :)
Also, about those, don't those cards on the first page on the left, and any cards close to the binding, get bent because of the bend in the page? I'm sure most MTG players who're serious about storing cards might not use those? I'm curious because it seemed like they could bend based on the video!
Thank you for making this!
I put them in one of those phone case holders so that they don’t get scratched or anything sometimes and they don’t even fall out they don’t get scratched nothing
Deep pocket monster you inspired me in pokemon and vaultx binders cause i dont wanna practice bad binder behavior😊 and i loce youre videos
My son and I use Dragon Shield sleeves for our good cards and keep them in a Z Folio LX zipper binder from BCW. Works well
this is a very nice video i had a o ring binder and i needed a new one so i decided to get the card folio one because of you
I have the same sleeve pages with the padded backing and they go to the side and it has a gold pikachu with a black background and I love the way people made these I love this binder that I have ❤
You bring the information in a fun way😁
