As a college student who also games, the relatively slim design of the Victus makes it extremely portable. I also recommend anyone that is interested in buying this to check out the HP store online and get yours custom built, if there is a good sale. I got it on sale for $449 for college with rysen 5, and 2050 and 8gb of ram, I only use it for light gaming and streaming and browsing, but I was thinking to upgrade the ram to 32fb, do you know which ram I should use?
I recently bought victus gaming laptop 16-r0097nr they said it had a 144Hz screen but when I received it the default was 60Hz or 40Hz. Customer service wanted to act like it was a technical issue and no one wanted to take accountability
So, for anyone wondering about the temps while gaming... I got a victus 16 with a rtx 4060 last week and ive stressed tested it playing Ark Survival Ascended and Total War Warhammer 3 (made sure gpu was running 100%). Temps on the GPU never surpassed 73°C.
I've never understood the hype with opening a laptop with one hand. If it means I don't have screen wobbles and a weak hinge that just falls apart after some time, I'll take it. Good review😂
People most likely not going to use the laptop display anyway my Victus is 16 inch 75 hz (overclocked) so I just bought a 144 hz 24 inch monitor to game on
I own a 2021 version with RTX3060, 11400H and 144hz 100% sRGB screen. Enjoying it a lot. The only issue so far is 83 degrees GPU after 1.5 years of no cleaning, but I'm about to fix that
Hi I have a question? Do you have g sync or free sync? Or do you notice something regarding to tearing or something like that? I’m not quite sure if the laptop display is good for me (fhd, 144hz) Lenovo victus 16 with Rtx 4070
I picked this up from Costco a few weeks ago, but with several upgrades (a 4060, 32gb ram, an hx i7, Wi-Fi 6e and the 144hz screen) for $1099 on a sale. It’s been great, and I’m extremely happy with it for that price. I also really like (as you mentioned in the beginning) that its appearance is more discreet than most other gaming laptops. My only complaint is that the 250 nit screen on the 144hz display is a bit dimmer than I’d like (as you also mentioned). But otherwise I love it, and the screen is fine indoors, which is the only place I’ll be using it, anyways.
A 60hz screen in a laptop with any graphics card in 2023 is a huge failure. Nevertheless, I am pleasantly surprised by the very good temperatures at idle. Anyway, thanks for the review!
@@JarrodsTech I Jarrod thank you for the video. I own a Hp victus with 8 gb ram i5 - 12450h and with rtx 3050 but only with a 60 hz screen, and my biggest doubt is if the computor could run a monitor with 165hz. (i am new in the gaming laptop zone).
I have the RTX 3060 Ryzen 5800h Victus 16 (2021) from your videos and have enjoyed it since! Even though there are minor setbacks, like having to mess around with the Realtek audio drivers for my headphones to sound good. But it's still a very solid gaming laptop nonetheless. I never found the screen wobble to be a problem unless you're typing on your lap. Really disappointed with the 2023 version though haha
@@v1d300 In my experience it's pretty average like other gaming laptops, 2-4 hours depending on usage. If I use battery saving and turn the refresh rate to 60hz then it "could" survive a full college day.
Hey man i have the same problem with the audio where my headset sounds muffled somehow. I've spent hour trying to fix it but nothing worked.. did you manage to the fix the sound issues if yes,pls tell me how
The more I watch reviews and read different subreddits (laptop, gamedev, and engine-specific forums), the more I'm leaning away from the 4050 just because of the cost per value of the gpu. And this video just reinforces that maybe I should consider something from the cheaper 30xx series. Thanks!
Do not forget power consumption (and eventual thermal throttling) as a key criteria. Yes, the 3060 140W laptop version gets better results in some games, but it really needs to consume more than RTX 40XX series in game to perform well. The RTX 40XX series never consume more than 90-110W in game (so far), which means a few $ saved on electricity bill each month and less heat to be dissipated by the cooling system, so less risk of overheat / thermal throttling / eventual battery damage. Consequently, between two gaming laptops sharing the same chassis / cooling system / price, I would definitely recommend to buy the one with (let's say) i5-13500H and RTX 4050 120W instead of the one with i7-11800H and RTX 3060 130W. Edit : I forgot about perceived value if ever you wanna resell your laptop later and the battery which capacity is already impacted after many months without turning the laptop on (which will certainly be the case for a laptop based on RTX 30XX if you buy it in october 2023). Last but not least: the probability of future Nvidia drivers' update improving GPU performance is always higher on the most recent gen compared to older ones.
@@mrlito1 these are good points. One of my criteria for buying a laptop is definitely some future-proofing. And your point about drivers is a problem I already have with my old unit, an ASUS ROG GL553VE with GTX 1050ti. It's about time I upgrade for work purposes, game development is becoming more demanding. From your point of view, driver-wise how long do you think the 3060 series would be supported by NVIDIA that it won't F up? Because right now, if I update my nvidia drivers I get BSOD after just a couple of minutes of game development. Which always prompted me to revert to an older driver.
To advertisers + sponsors: Ads on Jarrod's Tech are some of the few I don't skip and actually watch. Because I feel he is one of the more trustworthy TH-camrs, and I'm actually curious to see what products he's chosen to support. If I didn't own a budget android phone, I might actually buy a CASETiFY case.
I already bought my laptop based on your score and review(asus m16 4070 2023), and I don't need a new laptop but I still subbed because you have great quality videos, it's thanks to you that I fell I to the rabbit hole of laptop and pc gaming
I've just get Hp Victus with AMD Ryzen 7 7800HS + 4060 RTX for 899$ in Spain! I couldn't believe it, I thought it was a kind of scam xDD, but it is from a well known shop, so... lol!
Thanks Jarrod! Considering the number of issues regarding HP's broken screen hinges since many years, is it really a good news to have stiffer screen hinges on this Victus laptop? HP as #2 world leader laptop manufacturer still cannot implement correct quality screen hinges, unlike Lenovo's... Sad.
It is good news so that the hinge is more durable. Lenovo might not stand for Hinge Problems, but they still managed to ruin the Thinkpad, so i wouldnt look to them as a role model
Very nice review of HP Victus 16 . Now I got one in December 2022 and after using for almost a year I got some problems : 1) The battery is draining very fast like 2% per minute and I am using the laptop for browsing and listening music ( The best efficiency power doesn't resolve the problem either). Intresting when I plugged the charger it charged up very fast like 5% per minute. 2) The FPS are not as high as they were when I bought it . What should I do in this case ?
there is a config of this laptop that i think of getting, the configuration is a Ryzen 5 7640hs with an RTX 4060. It also has 144hz screen with mux switch all of this for Rm4300 or 910USD. do you think that's worth it?
Amazing video, I've been binging a few of your videos and im loving the in depth comparison and reviews in your videos, thanks for the information Jarrod
@@techno.maestro Personally, i like the tuf dash f15 more as its slightly slimmer and is cheaper (for medium specs), but recently my fav is probably the lenovo loq 15, as its relatively cheap, has good build quality even tho it is all plastic, the specs are on the higher end and it isnt that bulky, sure it is heavier for the price, but I personally really like the look and performance of the laptop
@Resnicu i ve been using it for 5 days quite fine for the price. The case is not the best quality but nice plastic, screen quality is okay. Performance on win 11 is quite good and fast. When it comes to cooling, if you play games it goes more than 70 or plus celsius but fan works all the time at thag moment. I disabled turbo boost and for example with Hell Let Loose it goes to 60 65 celsius max ( highest graphic options) similar with cod WWII in full graphic settings. Both games work quite fine and without any problems. I tried battery once while gaming, it went around 2 and half hours so i assume with standard use around 4 hours it would go.
@nogo5198 Awesome, gonna get it myself since it's got the best configuration for what I need. My only concern is the build quality since I don't want the hinges to give in with time. Thanks for the reply.
@@nogo5198 Just got it myself aaaand big bummer, it doesn't have a charge limiter so I can stop it from charging past a certain point (just in case anyone wants to buy this and is wondering if it has that feature). One big reason I got this over it's lenovo counterpart was the battery life but If I'm forced to keep it at 100% all the time it will drain the battery's health effectively invalidating the very reason I bought it, so I might end up throwing it back in the box and returning it. Other than this it's a great laptop, I just don't think I can get over the lack of this feature when their cheaper, non-gaming laptops have it. So yeah If anyone that wants this laptop sees this make sure you are ok with that.
I’ve found locally a Hp victus 15 i5-12500h 4060 gpu, 16 g ddr4, WiFi 6 and bt 5.3, 512g storage. Is it a good idea or the ddr4 would cause a bottleneck?
the annoying thing about the victus lineup is the huge variety in configurations .....i've the 2022 version and when i wanted to check the review there was three totally different configs, the chassis interior upgradeability screen were so different please check carefully before you buy
A version of this laptop with the 144 Hz screen, i7 HX CPU, RTX 4060 and 32 GB of RAM has been available for $1100 from Costco brand new or $899 refurbished from MicroCenter.
If I buy a second hand laptop that is branded as 'manufacture refurbished' and they have replaced the hard drive, then how can I work out its total run time ?
@acecodm2550 Thanks for asking I upgraded from a 5 year old non gaming laptop, so my expectations were pretty low. But from what I can say, it's really good. I really like the design the most. You can take it anywhere without looking weird, but it still has some gaming look. I heard the general belief in the gaming laptop community is that HP's tend to have some more issues, I haven't used it long enough yet, but I don't have any issues so far. I don't play very extensive games, but the ones I do play run very well. The screen wobble isn't that bad at all, and the plastic build feels solid. My spec is a little different than the one Jarrod has, so stuff like the bad wifi card doesn't apply to me.
I have a question. Do you think that this exact laptop, but with a lower tier i5 13500h, would still thermal throttle? Im asking because i was looking at upgrading my laptop, and this victus is the cheapest laptop with a 4050 in italy (at least, that i have found), and it looks like the perfect solution for me, but i'm not a fan of having the cpu contantly at 95°.
HP gaming laptops are actually really good. I had a budget one for a while and it was fast never crashed had a nice design and I had the gpu overclocked! Will always recommend them
Would you consider making a laptop comparison between Ryzen 4 processors and 3+ processors? Is there enough difference between R7 7735hs and 7840 hs to be worth the price difference?
Nah, probably not doing gen on gen comparisons anymore as they get few views despite being a lot of work, also much harder to match GPUs to do gaming. We will instead focus on Intel vs AMD from current gen, which I think is of more use to most people
I cannot find the answer to this: When I close my HP Victus 2023, in a number of hours, the battery dies. I haven't changed any of the factory settings. Do you know how to solve this? Thank you!!
I always thought, "why do people complain about laptop noise" I've had plenty of gaming laptop and never had complaints about fan noise. But God damn this laptop is LOUD!!
Hi, Jarrod. I would like to ask you if there is any actual difference ( except build quality/material ) between an Hp Omen and a Victus if the hardware is exactly the same ?
Regarding the slow WiFi speed, do you ever check the tested laptops using another WiFi card? I see in your list that e.g. the ASUS TUF A16 that comes with a WiFi card with the same WiFi controller reaches nearly twice the speed of this Victus, which makes me wonder if it's because of the specific M.2 WiFi card installed, or because of laptop limitations such as antennas, bus speeds et c. which also would affect an upgraded WiFi card.
So far, I haven't had a problem with this computer, except for the limitation on customisation. I bought the laptop very recently and I cannot change the backlight color on OLS (OMEN Light Studio). Is there any limitation now or is it a software thing? Im not sure.
Just bought the ryzen 7 7840hs, rtx 4060, ddr5 ram and 144hz version for 1000€ its a very good pc and I really love it to play some games, programming and study, the only down side its really that you can only have one ssd and as you mentioned for wifi 6 its really low but atleast you can upgrade the wifi card
Ive got a victus too but i cant see the gpu in gaming hub if km not playing games, or if mux switch isnt on, it says its inactive, have u exprienced the same thing?
@@farshidq356 I don't really use the GPU out of games so Idk about it but you can try changing it on the Nvidia control panel on the manage 3d settings area
Got mine with a 144Hz, 300 nits, 100% SRGB (according to HP) screen, the one on your unit is a bit ridiculous. So weird that in 2023 HP is even offering a 60Hz display considering everything else packed with it.
Writing from a 7640hs rtx4060 120watt 144hz screen victus 16 2023. Thermals are amazing for the amd models. It never gets pass 80 degrees celcius while gaming. Very good considering this was the cheapest 4060 laptop on sale in my country.
Any chance the new Zephyrus G16 is on the list for reviews? i know it's similar to M16 so maybe you don't feel like it's worth it, but i'm curious on how much performance we are trading for a better price.
Bought the Victus r0075TX variant recently, it comes with 13500HX, RTX 4050 120W, a 300nits 165hz 100% Srgb screen,16gb DDR5, and 512 GB NVME. This model has 2 NVME slots and the wifi works fine, I'm getting over 600mbps which is the best my router can throw. SO most probably HP listened to your review.
Strangely, or amazingly, my country's Victus actually uses an i5 13500HX processor. Which is surprising considering it's a budget machine. The only downside is of course thermal throttling but it's not surprising. Still not bad for a budget machine. Definitely a great midrange option.
hx is better than h because you can undervolt hx processors to reduce temps without sacrificing performance, but if you go too far your computer will crash. make sure to test stability thoroughly if you do go this route. beyond -125 mV is when it becomes sketchy
that single M.2 Slot already a dealbreaker for most people, and the screen too, gosh... It's like HP deliberately want to make their gaming product on second tier when compared to ANY other brand. I wouldn't even think to get this laptop... maybe any consideration to buy an HP product is their service availability, if you can easily access HP service center with available spareparts, then you might consider this (because you know, other brand such as Asus, MSI has a really bad rep in their aftersales).
As a laptop reviewer would you consider the HP Victus 16-r0073cl 16.1" Gaming Laptop Computer (Refurbished) - Mica Silver Intel Core i7 13th Gen 13700HX 1.5GHz Processor; NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 8GB GDDR6; 32GB DDR5-4800 RAM; 1TB Solid State Drive for $649.99 to be a good purchase. I am going to get a one-year warranty, adding another $80. What are your thoughts, or should I keep looking? The single SSD slot is the only major letdown so far. Thanks.
i was gonna buy this laptop, you said you can't use dgpu while using usb c dp? i saw one with the 14700hx and 4070 and it has the same port specs, i was going to use 1080p 240hz monitor with it, so that means i wouldn't be able to do that? im so confused here i hope you saw this thanks
It will depend on how you connect it to the monitor. USBC always connects to the igpu and HDMI connects to the discrete graphics. So, if you want it connecting to the 4070, you'll need to use HDMI.
@@JarrodsTech so hdmi 2.0 in the victus is capable on running lenovo y25 - 30 1080p 240hz? and what about the asus tuf fa507ui that has usb4 typec? is it connected to the discrete gpu or it is the same as victus? (usb c connected to igpu) thanks for your reply

With the 2021 ive found that putting pressure on the front of the laptop (like if youre holding it with 1 hand) makes the trackpad click the mouse- have you seen that at all with the 2023?
Hi Jarrod, You think you can do a review of the msi gp68hx with a 4080 before black Friday. Normally your reviews are complete enough to decide one model or another
Which one would u suggest Jarrod, victus 16(totally the same as this one), or a lenovo loq 15 ryzen 7 7840hs rtx 4060 8gb 115w 16gb ram ddr5 512gb ssd Will be used for editing videos and photos through adobe apps, and some gaming, thanks for awesome videos
The loq is better than this version of the victus generally, but the problem with the loq that it has a bad screen colors (56% srgb) in your case if you would like to use it for adobe wich needs good colors you will have to use an external monitor and hp in the other side even with its bad specs it has a 100% srgb screen
Does anybody know how to get the type C port to charge the laptop ? None of my chargers or cables works and I've been using anything between 65 Watts and 100 watts...

"I wish I could get this laptop since my current one is really old and has some hardware issues. But I know my mom is doing everything she can, and I'm grateful for her support. ❤"
10:30 Unless you update the BIOS on the 2022 Helios 300 which caps the CPU forever at 56W PL1 / 45W PL2 (or the other way around, can't remember). 😅 Though even before I did that the behavior was very random, sometimes it'd boost to 115W, other times it'd be limited right away, and it would always stay limited the moment a GPU-intensive app was started, even after closing it, and until a reboot. Hell, the whole reason I updated the BIOS was to see if that could be fixed, but instead it just made it worse. :D And unfortunately there's no way to modify this behavior with ThrottleStop or anything, the power limits values seem to be hardcoded. It makes me think that the CPU boosting to 115W sometimes wasn't actually intended by Acer and it was "corrected" in updates. I'm quite happy with the Helios overall but this is one aspect that I've found rather disappointing. There's just so much performance and thermal headroom left on the table, especially when running CPU-only tasks. So ironically this Victus even with a 60W power limit (let alone the 80-90W limit in performance mode) would still be slightly superior on the CPU side, even if it had the same 12700H CPU.
I bought this but with a Ryzen 7 (newest gen) / 144hz / RTX 4070 for around 1000 euros. The next laptop with around the same specs are at least 300 euros more expensive so this almost feels like a no brainer since my budget was 1000.

How are you cpu temps ?
A 60hz screen in a laptop with any graphics card in 2023 is a huge failure.
Nevertheless, I am pleasantly surprised by the very good temperatures at idle.
Anyway, thanks for the review!
You can get it with a better screen, honestly it seems more difficult to get the weird 60Hz config that they lent us.
@@nunolopes8515With HDMI, definitely, as that also bypasses Optimus (USB-C unfortunately doesn't seem to).
@@JarrodsTechYeah, 60 hz in 2023 for any gaming laptop over $500 is a joke. Unless MAYBE it was OLED.

I also have the same. It's going great never had any issue and it performs flawlessly
How is the battery life?
@@v1d300 In my experience it's pretty average like other gaming laptops, 2-4 hours depending on usage. If I use battery saving and turn the refresh rate to 60hz then it "could" survive a full college day.

Can you review the HP Omen 16 with the 4070 and AMD 7840HS
The more I watch reviews and read different subreddits (laptop, gamedev, and engine-specific forums), the more I'm leaning away from the 4050 just because of the cost per value of the gpu. And this video just reinforces that maybe I should consider something from the cheaper 30xx series. Thanks!
3060 max 140w for the win, babe!
@@DarknoorX yeah been reading reviews about 3060 being better than the earlier 40xx series hmm any laptop in mind that has this?
@@mrlito1 these are good points. One of my criteria for buying a laptop is definitely some future-proofing. And your point about drivers is a problem I already have with my old unit, an ASUS ROG GL553VE with GTX 1050ti. It's about time I upgrade for work purposes, game development is becoming more demanding.
From your point of view, driver-wise how long do you think the 3060 series would be supported by NVIDIA that it won't F up? Because right now, if I update my nvidia drivers I get BSOD after just a couple of minutes of game development. Which always prompted me to revert to an older driver.
the xx60 series is by far more bang to buck than the xx50 series

Thanks for another great review Jarrod. Keep up the good work.
Their service manual for the 2023 victus 16 shows 2 m.2 slots, so that makes it even more confusing/concerning as to why they removed one
Correct me if I'm wrong.
But i believe it to be a peculiar cost saving measure with lower spec Victuses.
I don't know the reason, but ryzen ones have 1 ssd and Intel ones have 2.
The FPS are not as high as they were when I bought it . What should I do in this case ?
Check your battery health,it may be screwed, try cleaning it up,it is most likely thermal throttling,so you still have warranty on it ?

@@techno.maestro Personally, i like the tuf dash f15 more as its slightly slimmer and is cheaper (for medium specs), but recently my fav is probably the lenovo loq 15, as its relatively cheap, has good build quality even tho it is all plastic, the specs are on the higher end and it isnt that bulky, sure it is heavier for the price, but I personally really like the look and performance of the laptop

I have ordered 8645HS RTX 3050 with 144 hz screen version, my biggest concern is the overheating. lets see how it goes
How is it?
@@Resnicu about the hinge, its okay but time will show. One of the reviews they sere saying the hinge was strengthened but it is hard to say.

What are your thoughts on it so far?
@acecodm2550 Thanks for asking
I upgraded from a 5 year old non gaming laptop, so my expectations were pretty low.

Thank you!!

@@PeymanRahimi-v4j yeah it is a single zone rgb. You can change it with the pre-installed HP Omen utility.
