These Trains Haven't Been Run in 50 Years Arrived - Let's Test Them!

  • I was sent these vintage model trains from a guy named Adam. They belonged to his grandfather and apparently haven't been run in over 50 so it was going to be interesting to see if they would start after all that time. It was incredibly generous to send these and I'd like to give Adam a big thanks for it!

    The first Pennsylvania locomotive was made by Penn Line. Penn Line made models of almost all of the Pennsylvania Railroad's steam locomotives and yours is a model of a class I1s 2-10-0 (just to clarify as they look the same typed, it's an I as in the word igloo, not a L as those were the PRR's 2-8-2s). They came in RTR and kit form and were made between the 1950s and early 1960s, after that Penn Line went out of business and the line was picked up by Bowser who kept it going until they stopped production of steam locomotive kits in about the year 2008. Fun video by the way!

    I know I'm late to this one, that PRR Decapod has a special place in my heart. My Dad gave me it to me when I was way too young and I wrecked it. Then later in life I realized Bowser kits existed. Bought the PRR Pacific as a test to see how it would come out. Built it and it was great! Went back to buy the Decapod and the company discontinued the steam engine line. Anyway he was happy to see the finished Pacific which was cool.

    B&O had GP9TT that were used for local commuter runs. The TT (torpedo tube)was the designator for air tanks that were moved atop the roof where the dynamic brk blister was and the fuel tank was expanded in size for extended running distance.

    • @Petemonster62
      @Petemonster62 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stan - The large tank may be two tanks; one for water & one for fuel. The water would be used by the steam generator to provide heating for the commuter cars. Many railroads had those GP9TT for both freight & passenger operation.

    I just got that Pennslyvania Railroad T1 2-10-0 Decapod just a couple of days ago including with that long distance tender with the "Dog House" on top!
    There is a story with the model companies that made that loco. The originals like the one I got were made by Penn Line. However, Penn Line went out of business in 1963 after only 16 years in business. The dies and tooling where aquired by Bowser. You can tell the difference by looking at the end of the tender. Just above the coupler and "behind" the ladder if you see "Penn Line" then it was obviously made by Penn Line in 1963 or prior. If it is blank then you have the Bowser version. Another way you can tell is if it says "Penn Line" under the tender trucks above the screws.
    Also if it has a working headlight it is likely the Bowser version, if it has a jewel it is likeky to be an old Penn Line. One more difference: If you see the wire to the tender in the cab going through a hole in the bulkhead its a Penn Line. If the wire goes under the cab and the hole is pluged up then it is probably the Bowser version. It looks like you got the Penn Line version since the wire seems to go through the bulkhead and has a cavity for the headlight where the reflector jewel suppose to go.
    I have the Penn Line version with the jewel headlight and the company name on the tender andctrucks.
    Regardless, the one you have is in decent shape (and it looks older the one I got, probably from the early 1950s) but it is missing two large air tank cylinders above the pilot (it is also missing the pilot steps).
    www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/ho-bowser-prr-decapod-10-steam-engine-1789658172
    You could probably get a replacement pilot and air tanks either through Ebay or from Bowser directly (albeit they are discontinuing their steam locomotive models so they may not have it anymore😕).
    Mine worked smoothly when I got it but I still disassembled it and cleaned and lubed it. It runs great! On yours YOU REALLY NEED TO CLEAN THE WHEELS! They are not only dirty but some of the drivers look like they have some corrosion on the threads!
    I recommend this elite194 video on how to refurbish a Tyco Silver Streak C-430; not to show you how to do it since you've done it a million times before, but he does it in a way that he could install a DCC Decoader inside if you wanted to in the future. Among other things he was able to get the stall current draw of the motor below 1 amp making it safe for DCC; a Tyco Pancake motor! He also has a few tips on preserving traction tires and how to make the body come on and off easier without the death struggle he had at the start of the video!😂 He also shows a little on installing an LED headlight and how use stock blank circut boards to make wiring neater:

    Steam engine is a Penn Line PRR 2-10-0 Decapod with long haul tender. Bowser may have the missing parts yet, they produced it after Penn Line quit.
    Flat car is early (1950s) Rivarossi, check for a Lionel logo on it as they made Lionel HO in 1956 and that car was one offered as a Lionel.
    B&O set in the box is worth some money all by itself. The 0-4-0 was not included, someone added it. The Penn Line engine's worth a decent amount too. Probably $300 worth of trains there.

    It appears to to be a Pennsylvania RR I1s Decapod. A Baltimore and Ohio USRA Heavy Pacific. The tyco Mikes and Pacifics were probably their best locomotives. The little 0-4-0 Shifter was popular but likes to stop on insulated frogs. Are these the metal passenger cars? I worked for a toy store when this train set was popular, and I think it was $50 or less, The lowest priced sets were about $20, but minimum wage here was $1.50 to 1.65 per hour fifty years ago, so the passenger set would have been a weeks take home pay for many.

    I like your videos. I also used a Santa Fe engine , a coach made in France and a goods wagon. I ran but I sold it of. HO scale.

      These models also seem to last practically forever. Almost all quality metal parts and a simple design which doesn't have much to go wrong.

    The 2-10-0 is a bowser or penn line maybe the boiler looks like a k4 boiler from bowser or penn line maybe.

    Only in passing, ~10 min in, the 2-10-0 is probably a Bowser model. Penn RR "I-1" Decapod, used in long haul freight service. They have many service points, as in more than 10. I had a friend built one while at sea, in ~'69 I think, which is 50 years now. . . He had modified the drawbar so the tender would run close coupled until a curve required wider coupling. I never cared for the PRR "Belpaire" firebox, I have a Frisco "Russian", much smaller and smaller tender. Since I am in the deep south, PRR stuff doesn't interest me that much.

    The 2-10-0 is a Bowser product. Bowser made several PRR steam locomotive kits.

    I’m a novice model railroader and I have 50+ year old model trains and a train table. They belonged to my mothers father and they haven’t run since she was little. Is there any advice you can give me to help me get them running again?

    😮😊👍I believe the PA 2-10-0 is referred to as a “Texas” class

      @keystonesteam6888 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually 2-10-0 is a decapod 2-10-4 is the Texas

    That 2-10-0 is a Bower locomotive because I have a bower K4 and they look very similar
