I love how everyone in the audience give Erik a Standing Ovation and completely ignores the man on stage. That had to have pissed him off. Way to steal the spotlight!
It made me cry. He deserved that applause and probably assumed he'd never have that sort of acknowledgement or acclaim from anybody, let alone a packed house of 1100 people.

I like this scene. It sounds like Christine proves her love for Erik thru song, and the smile he gives her shows that he acknowledges her love. And I think that this scene is their triumph over those who oppressed them. Just a thought.
this is so cool how they weave the story of Marguerite into the drama of Christine & the phantom..both personas singing for deliverance from the dark forces...
and Faust applies to both Gerard and Erik, though Erik was able to give his "Marguerite" a decidedly better ending

FYI everyone both of them are lip syncing. The names of the opera singers actually doing the singing for them is in the movie credits.
This scene is so beautiful...as are the words Christine and Erik are singing to each other. I personally really dislike the ending and can't stand Phillipe, but this is one of my most favourite adaptations/interpretations of Phantom of the Opera... (:

I loved this entire TV movie/series, pretty much everything about it but this was by far my favorite part. From the part when Erik starts to sing and everyone is shocked at where the amazing voice is coming from, to the well-deserved standing ovation just for Erik!!
And, I know it wasn't Charles Dance singing and therefore it was sung by a well-trained opera singer, but the way he hits that last high note is incredible!
the first time i watched this it brought tears to my eyes WAY better than 2004 version the power in this scene is phenomenal! and just saying she's the only Marguerite iv'e ever seen

+Melissa Allen I agree this was so much better than the 2004 version, I originally saw this when I was just 15 and found it again now, I so love this version.
Well, if you are talking about the version with Emmy and Gerard Butler, that had original music. They are basically doing a cover of a different opera here, and the voices are much more developed and operatic than the 2004 version because they are dubbed by people either older or with more professional experience than the characters, whereas the actors in the 2004 have the voices of the actual characters.
If we are thinking of the same 2004 version, then the music from th e 2004 version is different than here. This has more tacted onto it and might sound better as far as a lot of content goes, but that's because the song they sing here is from a completely different opera, not 'Phantom'. But I do love this!! I feel like the Phantom is a bit of a fanboy for operas (no socker ;).
Actually, the song they sing here, is the exact song that is sung in this part of the story in the original Phantom (the book).

The ascension scene is my favorite because Margarette finds redemption and is saved. Ever since I saw this sung by Jeanette McDonald in the movie “San Francisco” I have wanted it sung at my funeral. Brings tears to my eyes everytime
I saw Faust a few days ago and during the prison scene this scene from the phantom of the opera kept coming to my mind.
I love this scene. The perfect triumphant moment for their love.
My dad taped this when it came on TV when I was little, and I never watched it until I became a Phan. There were some things that I thought were sort of silly, but this scene just blows me away. There's the true power of music for you! Wow.
Probably my favorite part of this film and everyone sings so beautifully because it incorporates actual Opera.

This scene is really beautiful, I love how the song fits the plot and the moment and gives a great scene. This is my favorite version of the story and Eric.
Also I have to point that, without any context, seeing a man creeping around in shadows, with darkened eyes with the "he's here" ringing in the back... it's kind of scary.

@darkprose But my favorite interpretation is the book "Phantom" by Susan Kay. It tells the story of Erik's birth all the way to his death. Kay did tons of research based on the few clues that Leroux gave about Erik's past. It's a phenomenal book.

Erin F it's opera - no. It is almost always the first line of the text. Most arias are indexed that way and not named individually because it's basically an excerpt from a greater composition. This particular piece is a part of Faust's fourth act. You can usually find it as "Faust final trio" or "Faust final scene".
I saw this for the first time back in 2016, and something clicked. I'd heard opera before, but not like this; in a form that I loved because of my previous love for the characters. Years of training later, and I'll be going to school for opera performance next year, and I have this very scene to thank for the beginning of my journey.

I can tell you having been in production with him at the end of his career Jacques Mars was one of the kindest, sweetest and most generous artists you could ever meet . I have great memories of Michele in Spontini's La Vestale and Jean Dupouy is so wonderful in this.

They skip around a lot for the POTO movie, but it's still a really touching scene. My favorite part of the movie. I guess it would be awkward to talk about "The demon! God protect me, forgive me" etc when she's really singing to Erik, so they skip the "le demon!" part.

I fell in love with this opera because of this movie - and it's still one of my favourites! And especially the scenes from here - but the Phantom is sung originally by Gérard Garino, from whom I unfortunately only found one other recording. He's wonderful!

I wish this scene came with subtitles because you KNOW they're confessing their love to each other!
She's in jail for drowning her baby and would be executed tomorrow. Faust comes to rescue her at night but she refuses to go because she already accepted her crime and also notices that the devil is with him, prefers to die and go to heaven to being saved by the devil and go to hell later.
If the scene wasn't interrupted the character would die and go to heaven (some productions make it more religious as she goes to heaven in a beautiful way while some make dramatic executions).
Either way Faust is dragged to hell in the last scene.

In this miniseries yes, she absolutely loved the Phantom. But this version also deviates from the original cannon in which its way up for debate.
Did she love him in the original? Maybe. Raoul thinks so. She denies it but she still returns to him again and again. Does she love him? No one really knows. But she was definitely compassionate toward him, and at the very least she pitied him heavily. Which isn't really THAT different from love at its core.
I am also a huge fan of Gounod's Faust and It always cracks me up how Mephisto just runs into this scene and tries to get Faust out.

So, basically the song is Margueritte rejecting Faust-an evil man, ostensibly-and finding god as she’s dying. She talks about love and Faust thinks that she’s talking to him, but then she cries out “You have found me again, I no longer fear death” and the angels bring her to heaven-“Angels pure, angels radiant”. She was referring to god the entire time, and denouncing Faust and his wicked ways.
Erik is her Angel of Music and he has returned to her, much like the angels come for Margueritte and save her soul. It’s not EXACTLY about love, but it’s absolutely spiritual and moving! And it’s how she shows her love to him, because the technical demands of the song are pretty high and this is her crowning moment, performing as Margueritte, for him.
So romantic! I listened to this scene at least 20 times❤❤❤❤ . I've watched this movie another 20 times. I recomend the real opera with Jonas Kaufmann

I really Love the Phantom of the opera, and Faust by charles gounod is my favourite opera. So this is perfekt! But i think my favourite Phantom Movie Version is the 1943 or the 1964 Version. But this is really good, too !

@LollirockStar7 yes, Charles Dane was lip sincing to the lyrics that were modifyied from the original libretto of faust just for the occasion of this soundtrack. They couldn't have chosen a more hansome and lovlier man to support the voice and interpretation of Garino...two very talented men!

Sedgewick I meant Leroux's Phantom of the Opera novel. Several literary incarnations of Faust do predate Gonoud's faust opera though.
Actually, it's a lot more like the book than any other version, down to the exact part of Faust where she disappears.

AFAIK you're right, the singer is Gerard Garino. I remember that I saw the movie and ran to the next classical music store to find SOMETHING with him singing in. Back then, there was only one CD available... but I got one :)

@genmaximus110 Thank you for these book recommendations -- they do sound very interesting. And I'm glad you clarified that you did like the movie. Some people believe that writing is a "purer" form, and that movies only end up distorting it. Which isn't completely wrong -- all movies adapted from books change their source material -- but that doesn't mean the movie is inherently inferior because of all that. All art is transformation, anyway.

@genmaximus110 And for uniqueness, I like "Angel of the Opera" by Sam Siciliano. It's a book that tells the same contents of Leroux's story, but throws in Sherlock Holmes trying to investigate the case. It sounds strange, but it's very true to the original book and it's just fun.

@darkprose Don't get me wrong, I do love this movie. It's just not accurate to the book, which I thought was what you meant. I liked the character that Dance added to Erik. He's so likeable and mysterious. And I love how he plays flute in the movie as well. It was so cool. And of course the Faust scene, which is important, because Christine should be singing Faust. That's how it is in the original book. And I love the pranks Erik plays on Carlotta, especially the itchy wig!
@darkprose Writing isn't always so pure, especially when they write a book after a movie comes out. Those are some of the worst books ever! And movies help you visualize so much better, at least for me. I have an active imagination, but I do like to see visuals to help boost my experience. Yes, if you're a big Phantom fan, a fan of all the media out there, you must read those two books, especially the one by Susan Kay. It's priceless.
