@phangirl1986 I agree. In the song, Christine sings "Yes, it's you whom I love." while Erik sings "Yes, it's me, I love you." This scene always made me tear up for it's beauty and meaning

When I first saw this song I was so surprised and awed when the Phantom started to sing because this was seriously the firs time in the movie. His voice is gorgeous. I can't get over their duet. His vibrato. Ugh. I just go and fangirl in a corner.

Yeah. I fell in love with opera & phantom after that duet. Its so so breathtaking &soultouching! So amazing. Its like they made love singing... With passion & desperate deep affections (I guess thats why Raoul looks so jealous ^^). Stunning. Masterpiece all times.

May seem like a stupid question, but which part is vibrato? And yes, his voice is fantastic!

***** Vibrato is when the singer produces a tremulous or pulsating effect in their voice

Surely one of the best adaptations. It is much not Leroux accurate, but it keeped the main message about the story and it brought us one of the best representations for Erik, that many versions missed. For more adaptations like this one! Enough of turning a tragic, misunderstood antihero wishing to be loved, forgave and understood like Erik into a heartless, stupid villain with no respect to Leroux. Great acting of both Polo and Charles Dance, they are of my fave Christine and Erik ❤️❤️
Btw, she should have stay with Erik, and not that useless, selfish, narcisist count! Raoul/Philippe doesn't deserve a girl as sweet as her :)

This is my favorite part of the whole movie. PhantomReviewer called it silly; I can't see how he can think that. It's so passionate. I can't understand the words or the subtitles, but the emotion shines through so perfectly. Whoever does the singing for Teri Polo and Charles Dance, bravo! The Phantom's voice especially is gorgeous!
The only thing is, I kind of feel bad for the guy playing Faust. He got his role stolen! You can see him in the background mouthing the words, poor guy, lol.

This scene is amazing. The translation in French is that she is telling the Phantom that she loves him and that he is her heart. He responds in kind. This is why the Count doesn't look very happy because they are both declaring their love to one another. Though I know both of the voices are dubbed in, both actors had to learn these songs in French, as well as act the scene realistically, a major accomplishment. I HATE how the movie ends, but this scene makes the movie worth it. I LOVE THIS SCENE. The music is gorgeous. The sentiment looks so real.

@@theatrekidwithinternetacce704 He was dying of sadness. Christine passed away after seeing his deformed face and then woke up only to try and escape. His heart was destroyed. I don't think science can explain or even prove that, but heartbreak can really make a person sick. I've been through something similar. A rejection from someone I truly cared about. I couldn't eat, cause there was a knot in my stomach. I couldn't concentrate in anything else. Just wanted to sit in a corner and cry myself to death. Purple dots appeared in my thigh and I felt physically sick. So yeah, he was very much dying.

I love the Erik and Christine moments in this film. like the little looks he gives her or the tendor touches or moments when he wants to hold her touch but is surprised. when she's getting ready and he says 'don't worry I've never seen such perfection' and then the look of tender love mixed with passion is just so well done. Also talking about the bistro and helping her with her dress jusy great moments. All the Christine and Erik moments even the ones when he's angry are great. Some of his one liners are great. My grandmother recorded this movie when it aired on television over 30 years ago. My siblings and I would watch it. We were very, very young. I was probably 9 or 10? My baby brother was maybe 5 when I first sat and watched it with him. I LOVED the movie then and I still love it today. This was always my favorite scene!
Every time I watch it my entire body becomes covered in goosebumps.
This year, I decided to read Faust and figure out what the opera story is about…Goethe is not light reading but I’m almost finished with the book. I’ve been learning a lot and expanding my mind…and it is all because this scene inspired me and sparked my curiosity when I was a child.
Thank you to the person who made it available on TH-cam!

Erik was (almost) human and simply amazing, Christine was more confused than ever, raoul/phillipe was a bigger douche than I've ever seen him, and the duet was heartbreakingly wonderful. The portrayal of their relationship in this version was my favorite. The 2004 version was cool, but it did not hit me in the tear ducts like this one did.

I love this version of The Phantom of the Opera and I just adore the duet aria on this version. I would love to be able to download the aria/song/duet that Christine and Eric sing to my music collection; but even Shazan cannot identify the area/song. Oh woe is me.. Two hearts beating as one.

This song is from the final trio of Faust: it can be found by googling the first line of it. It's Mon cœur est pénétré, Ah! C'est la voix and Alerte! Alerte!
Hope I helped you. They cut quite a chunk out between Ah! C'est la voix and Alerte! Alerte! So the scene is much longer than it looks here. But it's truly beautiful. Happy hunting!

I wish I could find recordings of the female opera singer who actually sang this! Her name is Michelle Lagrange. She is excellent!

I agree! I love the duet in this! I know its dubbed, but all the same Charles Dance gives so much expression of his love. And I like how the audience applauds him, as though his mask in those few wonderful moments no longer matters. He seems so happy when the song ends. ''Oui, ce moi je t'aime!'' (I hope thats right) He really believes it. We love you, Erik! Beautiful...Its so sad it has to end.

He pretty much so chose how to do everything in the Opera house according to Gerard & he taught Christine to sing. He also made everyone in the Opera house think he was a ghost & knew ventriloquism. THAT is intelligence in my opinion

I've seen it called: "Ah! C'est la voix du bien aime! Oui, c'est toi! Je t'aime!" ("Ah! It is the voice of my beloved! Yes, it's you; I love you!"), or just "Oui, c'est toi! Je t'aime!"

Watching Season 2 of Game of Thrones, and found out Charles Dance was in it. Squeed when I heard him speak. His voice is just as alluring even when he isn't playing the Phantom.

Got to hand it to the conductor and the orchestra, they just kept going.

Oh, in the book Raoul is more sensible and attentive to Christine's happiness.
This movie is great (it's my favorite adaptation ^^), but it has nothing in commun with the book :S

I really like this version of the phantom, he actually has a personality, instead of the typical angsty selfish asshole personality we usually get this phantom is likeable with his funny sarcastic comments.

one sad thing about Eric's singing is that it makes think if he had a normal face he probably could have been an opera singer and been on that stage with Christine.

Actually, in this version, they both sing real opera arias dubbed by real opera singers who know the right techniques to sing in opera stages without microphones. Broadway and 2004 version however is more pop and not by real opera singers, maybe that's why for majority people, they are easier to listen to. But in the real opera stage, their voice, with that way, cannot deliver and too small. Yes, Emmy Rossum was in the MET, but she was in children choir and not yet learn true opera techniques.

Double agreed. *raises teacup in agreement* Couldn't've said it better myself. Possibly the most beautiful singing I have ever heard. THAT there is why I adore opera so much. The Phantom singing it just makes it seem like the lottery in chocolate.
