You should look into how Louis XIV completely shook French Culture and catapulted it to the zenith of arguably the world, every European power was trying to copy it.
@@johnnotrealname8168 The success of the French court and its culture was largely due to the synthesis of long-standing influences from Florence, Venice, and Milan. Everything from lace, to millinery, pastries to opera; was imported from Italy, rendered French, and then done in a manner of such exuberance, pompe, and expense, that it would, indeed, shake the musical, cultural, and artistic worlds. France in the late 17th to early 19th centuries, was truly an exponent of both the apex of a society, and the later extreme decadence and upheaval of it. @Louise de La Vallière: His name is Boris Terral. I think his acting is very authentic. If he'd stand there with a bored or expressionless face, he couldn't persuade Louis XIV. to respect him again. It's very touching. All his feelings 'bout Louis become free in this moment. All the time he thought, the king and him are friends. In the end Louis didn't show any emotions except contempt. How would you feel? Years gone by and you think, that you know each other. Then you get dissapointed. Lully devoted most of his compositions Louis. "Without him I'm nothing.." It's kinda sad if you realize that it's over. Did you watch the movie at all? I'm sure you would understand his acting, if you did.
Cavalli was an early Baroque composer like Monteverdi, not a middle Baroque like Lully. Regarding late Baroque, for me it's a tie between Bach and Handel. Bach clearly has the bigger brains but Handel seems to have greater beauty.
i don't mean to be pedantic but cavalli died in 1676 living long enough to write "ercole amante" for the wedding of louis xiv with lully (who died 1687) writing inter-act ballets making him contemporary with lully. he's more "middle" than "early" baroque.
Quelle musique merveilleuse, quelle merveilleuse extraite, j'aurais aimé pouvoir voir tout le film! What wonderful music , what a wonderful extracted , I do wish I could see the whole film !
A beautiful scene indeed. Actually, this video contains three different tragedies of Lully. The first one is from Isis, the second is from Armide and the last one is from Amadis.
@bellgaggs The "guy" is Lully himself, the conductor and composer who sings it to himself, savoring it's beauty and his genius. He's not singing; he's only mouthing it as he conducts.
Sublime!!!.
wonder how they chose the three pieces of music here... especially the choice of last one from Amadis' prologue is superb, ending with "ce bien-heureux moment"... 😭
After this film the only option is to watch the stunning recreations by William Christie of the opera/ballets of Lully and Rameau, a glorious revelation in sound and sight.
So, what gives with Louis by this time? How could he possibly sit there so stone-faced and unmoved by this incredibly wonderful music of Lully? Were I Le Roi, I'd have been standing on my seat cheering and applauding! Had Louis' taste already moved on to so-so's like Charpentier, Rameau, or Couperin?
When I see this movie I cannot say who is greater: Louis XIV în earthly power or Lully în arts, în heavenly power. And I admire both, beeing caught between earth and heaven
I like the kings facial expressions here. The first one is like "Right what has lully got for me today" to "For feck sake, lully can you see i am busy??"
Stupendous scene, marvelous music! Lully is too little known. He was a genius. Look up his "operas", which were called Tragedie Lyrique or Comedie Lyrique. They are beautiful. I was quite moved the first times I looked at the youtube presentations of Cadmus staged as in those days and with the old French pronunciation (which is pretty close to conservative Canadian French!)
Does anyone know where I can get the English lyrics to this? This is absolutely glorious and moves my soul to realms unkonwn. The man portraying Lully does so with such passion it is amazing such as scene 0:52-0:54 where he seems to be transcended into the atmosphere around him! BRAVO!

The set pieces in this film are mind blowing, extraordinary, and incomparably beautiful....only problem is, Lully would NEVER have conducted like this (although Gustavo Dudamel does, lol....!). He used a giant staff and simply beat time. But what a great scene, nevertheless, thanks for posting!
@mango2005 No, Lully enjoyed the king's favor, but the king was leery of Lully's crazy lifestyle and afraid it would stain him too. He probably was disappointed he couldn't dance any more. His father, Louis XIII (of 3 musketeers fame) was the first royal promoter of dance as a dancer himself.

@Louise de La Vallière:
His name is Boris Terral.
-First Baroque Period-greatest composer Monteverdi
-Second (Middle) Baroque Period-greatest composer Lully
-Third (Late) Baroque Period-greatest composers Handel,Bach,Vivaldi
i beg to differ. replace lully with cavalli.
Cavalli was an early Baroque composer like Monteverdi, not a middle Baroque like Lully. Regarding late Baroque, for me it's a tie between Bach and Handel. Bach clearly has the bigger brains but Handel seems to have greater beauty.
Aldea Alexandru uhh???? Rameau deserves a spot too!
i don't mean to be pedantic but cavalli died in 1676 living long enough to write "ercole amante" for the wedding of louis xiv with lully (who died 1687) writing inter-act ballets making him contemporary with lully. he's more "middle" than "early" baroque.
I would add Cavalli and Purcell as well :-)
juste divin
Such a great century in arts it was!
It cannot be put on repeat!
What a majesty !!! What a grace !!!
Quelle musique merveilleuse, quelle merveilleuse extraite, j'aurais aimé pouvoir voir tout le film!
What wonderful music , what a wonderful extracted , I do wish I could see the whole film !
Great compilation, and beautiful performance!!
One of the many great scenes in this movie
A beautiful scene indeed. Actually, this video contains three different tragedies of Lully. The first one is from Isis, the second is from Armide and the last one is from Amadis.
@bellgaggs The "guy" is Lully himself, the conductor and composer who sings it to himself, savoring it's beauty and his genius. He's not singing; he's only mouthing it as he conducts.

I love the movie. I love the mucic!!
absolutly Awsome!!
I can't get enough from this video!
its my favourite!!
Sublime!!!.
I really love the sound of the timpani roll at 2:00 towards the end , it sounds like rolling thunderstorm
wow the actress is stunninggg
Magnificent music.
Amazing... I never thought I would have to love opera...
wonder how they chose the three pieces of music here... especially the choice of last one from Amadis' prologue is superb, ending with "ce bien-heureux moment"... 😭
one of the best movies ever. i love it
J'ADORE CE MOMENT. LA MUSIQUE EST SIMPLEMENT PARFAITE.
Wow...amazing.I love the music from this time, fab!
Oh my God! AMAZING
The king have not to show any sign of hapiness. The same for the first view of the hall of mirors. ;)
***** I know right?! But ya he'd more than likely moved on to Charpentier and the like. I see you have Empress Mathilda as your avi :D (I adore her!)
0:40 love this part 😍😍😍
Pures Meisterwerk!
*Vive Dieu et le Roi!!* Vive Louis XIV!! ⚜🇫🇷⚜
So good, I keep rewatching it.
Thank you nyke or w/e your nick is for bringing me here this was some gooooood stuff :)
Che musica! Che spettacolo! Bravissimi!
the singer is very beautiful !
It's just an actress. The music was recorded by someone else.
When I see this movie I cannot say who is greater:
Louis XIV în earthly power
or Lully în arts, în heavenly power.
And I admire both, beeing caught between earth and heaven
Great music!
Lovely 17th century mantuas!
@2BiTeddy Thanks a lot. i've been looking all over for this
I love that soprano!!!! 💋💕🎶
Bellissima musica, immagini eleganti. Bravi
absolument génial !!!
what power in this music !
Gosh, so beautiful...
I like the kings facial expressions here. The first one is like "Right what has lully got for me today" to "For feck sake, lully can you see i am busy??"
It's a beautiful movie to watch.
J'adore tout qui touche Louis XIV
magnifique !
Great music shines through.
Marvelous version and quite becoming to Louis le Grand!
From 0:43 until 0:55 is the best part !!
Wonderful !!!
Royal !!!!
BRAVO!

beautiful
0:44 - 0:56 sounds very similar to Lully's Te Deum. His music is marvelous. It surprises me that Lully is not more well known.
I love it!
i loe this!
i remeber when i irst saw this moviw,an i saw the drama-dramatic lully opening his mouth to the woman´s opera voice,i crycked up like hell xD
The best musician of the earth 🌍 in those years the Italian lulli .. son of the Tuscan traditions since landini Palestrina and Monteverdi..
In that periods listen this was like listen Led Zeppelin in 1815
Its gets better every time i here it...
