I know asking for bokeh is too much for action camera. I'm also looking for much better Bluetooth microphone feature. As of now, it's not existed.

    Camera B. Hands down. Clarity & color alone. Watching on a 85” tv and I can see how much more of a difference it is. The GoPro is way clearer and colorful. Since it’s first priority and what it actually is a “camera” that’s what it should do best. Both companies have work to do. Great video David. Thanks!! So do I want a longer battery with poorer videos? Or superior video with less battery? Hmmm

There also both designed as Action cameras, picture quality is not their priority, ease of use and reliability are, there the Action wins hands down. Want picture quality use a heavy pro camera such as an SLR.

I also did a 1 hour+, indoor, 4k recording test and no had problems but still felt it might be unreliable. I have the original dji Action and am considering getting the Action 3. Not willing to buy any more GoPro cameras. Its amazing how dji entered this action camera game only recently (May 2019) and is now kicking GoPro's butt.

But your first comparison vlog had me leaning towards DJI. I of course watched other vloggers comparing the same cameras. In the end, I finally decided to pull the trigger last week. For me this video is about 5 days to late, my camera will be here next Tuesday. I went for the DJI Osmo Action 3. Now I feel like I made the right decission!! I had the gopro hero 5, 7, 8 and 10 over the years and I had issues with all of them. I sold those other cameras and decided to try the A3 and I have not had a single issue with that camera. Not only that, I am a mobile editor and I use luma fusion on my m2 ipad pro to edit my videos. When plugging the A3 into my ipad, the files app recognizes it as a drive and it makes transfering files that much easier. With the hero 10 I had to either go thru the gopro app or I had to do it thru the photos app and that was always an extra step I had to take which I didn't like. I also have the dji mic system and that has been flawless as well. I am very happy with my action 3 but I am curious with what the hero 12 will be like. Its a shame we are coming up to 12 generations of the heros and yet those cameras still have issues while DJI is 3 gens in and they have pretty much made the A3 near perfect (at least for what I use mines for).

    I had the GO system forever. I didn’t have the 11 but had 2 GP 10 and all the stuff. I use mine professionally and the over heating crashing and having to dismantle it from the mod to pull battery and reset was hard on production. I picked up the DJI 3 and after a month or two using it extensively I put all of my GP gear on CL. I took a bath on it, but better than it growing old in a drawer. For me the GP isn’t even close for me extreme needs.😎🤙

    I've been looking at action cameras as I transition my TH-cam channel into more outdoors videos. I was pretty much sold on a GoPro. Names been around forever. After watching, I've spent the last 4 hours digging and found SO MANY GOPRO RELIABILITY complaints! Thank you for pointing that out! I struggle with Tech sometimes. @nomad0714 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Hi David,
    Some more thoughts to consider when buying either brand:
    - Accessories. Most people have GP as it’s been around for awhile so starting new means, they can be reused especially for GP9/10/11 like Media Mod, Cage, etc. Can’t do that with A1/2/3 so we need to factor this into the total cost to be fully objective than just entry price; and
    - Batteries. Stress test is nice but when I want continuous long form shooting both don’t cut it unless you use Volta or Ulanzi power banks + tripod legs and I don’t want to lug around extra batteries I will probably use so depends on your workflow; and
    - Image Quality. The devil is in the details and hands down, GP11 is better for me.
    Aside from this, we left the Elephant out of the room. What did DJI do for those who had the close focus quality issues? Like Gopro, nothing. Didn’t confirm or deny, just fixed it and kept quite to avoid lawsuits. So if you’re in that lot, I’m sure you will not be happy as well as the freezing issues over at Gopro. Both get thumbs down for this again trying to be fully objective for new buyers to know and now buy early models of A3.
    The other thing is that for vlogging, DJI exposes the subject and blows out the background when switching between say in the forrest and back to sunlight, while GP seem to balance between subject and background. Check for yourself so depends on your use cases.
    The other things not mentioned is photo quality, GPS, 8:7 to reframe portrait or landscape or re-crop, 360deg horizon lock in most shooting modes while DJI is limited to 2.7K. If these don’t matter in your workflow than DJI is the way to go;
    - TCO. Total cost of ownership, where accessories is one but the big one is between new models, there’s no backward or forward compatibility not consistent drive price.
    Meaning if you bought A1, it was good value for money and affordable. Then A2 was crazy high, completely different design, had overheating issues and got left behind after A3 was released, same chip and inside but repackaged but yet A3 got the 10bit upgrade, wtf DJI! And it cost way more than A3. So be like Sony and punish your loyal customers who spent more. Then you get the A3 which is more affordable but different design again. So if this trend stands and you upgrade, then expect A4 to cost more and a new design
    I myself couldn’t decide and got the A3 (and previous pissed off A2 buyer) in Jan’23 to avoid the quality close focus issues only because Gopro ecommerce couldn’t let me buy the GP11 working overseas for some reason so their loss.
    I’m a fan of tech so will load up where I can and both have major flaws and should go back to releasing every 2-3yrs so we get finished products instead of half baked ones and be guinea pigs and buy early and then get happy when they release firmware updates 3-6-9mos later when it should be there Day One.
    I’m waiting more eagerly on both ZV-E1 to arrive and the P3 to release as I don’t do extreme or underwater sports as much these days.
    Anyhow, good content as always and you covered most of the bases for new buyers to consider.

      I agree with the rest, however image quality is very subjective. Because the sharpness and quality is top notch on both. But unless you plan on uploading your footage straight after recording it. The DJI’s more neutral color tones makes it easier to edit and correct post production. GoPro is better without editing, DJI is definitely better with editing.

    Reason to buy the GoPro: higher resolution sensor. You can print photos larger or zoom in while editing video. Also 5.3K can give you a high resolution screen grab. Single door latch. One less point of failure. I read of several dji action 3 leaks while snorkeling. Even if the GoPro has a lower depth water resistance rating, the door seems to be better designed. The GoPro can be found for much less with frequent sales and with the subscription.
    The dji has the advantages you mentioned, but it seems you ignored the GoPro qualities over the Action.

    Time to redo this one already - Action 4. Can you please look at two additional scenarios? Scenario 1 - can both work externally powered without the batteries inside them? Scenario 2 - You'll need 4 cameras for this one; but can you pair two up (2 x DJI and 2 x GoPro) and control them with a remote control so that they start and stop video recording somewhat together? This is a multiple view of the same scene scenario where you want to start and stop the cameras together to capture the same scene. Scenario 3 - bonus scenario - do both have loop recording ability with said remotes, and here's the key, at what resolutions/frame rates (ideally all of them but I know GoPro doesn't work at all of them).

    In your comparison and others, I definitely like GoPro video better (but, yes, it's not a huge difference). I recently upgraded to the Hero 11 from a 10, however if 1. I had not gotten the GoPro, with an extra battery, for $300 and 2. I didn't already have a bunch of GoPro accessories (including the dome, which wasn't cheap) and most important 3. I have not experienced the bugginess/overheating that so many other people have (don't know if it's just dumb luck or what I use it for, hopefully I haven't now jinxed myself for saying it), I would have went with the DJI, the connection system is so much more convenient, battery is way better, no bugginess, just better overall except for slightly lower video, and I have a DJI drone, which I love. Next upgrade I will probably switch to DJI, it just sucks when you have so much money invested in a brand that can't be used with another one. Oh well, the grandkids will be thrilled when they get a free GoPro 😁

    I LOVE the GoPro 11 picture quality and I own 3, - one regular and two minis. I've had to return & exchange 2 different minis in less than 6 months due to battery issues. And even tho I'm a member and GoPro says that includes "No-questions-asked camera replacement," I was asked questions for a half hour or more each time! I deal with shut downs from over-heating regularly and often retrieve the camera and find that the last 20 minutes of awesome footage I believed I got does not exist because it shut down for one reason or another. When David said "BUGGINESS" I was like, "YES! EXACTLY!" I love these cameras even with their faults but I will be purchasing DJI from now on and use these GoPros if I specifically need the image quality the GoPros excel at (more contrast, saturation, and 5.3K).
    Also, David, it does sound like you are saying DGI instead of DJI but it literally sounds like that in every TH-cam video that anyone does for some reason, so don't sweat it.

    Thanks for a great comprehensive comparison between these two cameras! I'm SO GLAD you addressed the Overheating issue finally at 12:57! THIS is why I'm here, to see of the Osmo has any overheating issues...and you cleared it up for me, thank you!!!
    About 07:42 - Bugginess - I'm really surprised that I I didn't hear you say in THIS chapter about overheating (this is where I was first looking for your comments on overheating), because my GoPro 10 overheats EVERY SINGLE USE after 5-20 min at 4k60fps AND 30fps (NOT 120! I don't even bother with 120 since 30-60 is so bad!). To me, that is by FAR the BIGGEST bug of any GoPro in this range! And other TH-camr's videos show this as an issue with ALL gopros in this number range.
    BUT, that's why I'm looking to switch to the Osmo, because nobody says it ever overheats...right?

    "the video quality is almost identical" cracked me up. Just take ONE look at the surface textures on the dji and you'll see there's almost no detail compared to the Gopro.

    • @DavidManningvlog
      @DavidManningvlog  ปีที่แล้ว

      See, that's where preference comes into play. The GoPro for sure has a more crispy and textured look, but many people see that as over-sharpened and digital. If you appreciate that look though, for sure the GoPro is the way to go👍

    • @TheNitpicker
      @TheNitpicker ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DavidManningvlog sharpness and details are 2 different things. The GoPro video is objectively more detailed. The oversharpening can easily be corrected in the settings, after all there's 3 steps available but even without the sharpening there's still more detail and also way better exposure. The dji still tends to blow out highlights, one thing that's super obvious on my dji pocket 2, and it's still present on the action 3. The gopro footage is way more balanced.
      About bugginess, it's actually very stable as long as it doesn't overheat which it still does in 5.3k60. I can use the hero 3h+ hooked up to my powerbank and record my bike ride without any issues, but after 30-35 minutes in 5k it overheats.
      I've not had any stability issues besides the overheating which still is a bummer for sure and the strong point for the action. But most people won't use it like that.
      For my bike rides the Gopro was definitely the better choice, I want to see the road texture, which the action simply doesn't show

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheNitpicker I was hoping someone would point this out in the comments. I can understand if someone prefers a more cinematic look compared to a super-sharp digital image. However, sharpness is an entirely difference issue compared to detail. All the way through his comparison shots, the Camera B video had FAR more detail and texture everywhere. I recorded a bunch of screen shots just to confirm this to myself. In the closer shots, on Camera B, you can see all the beard stubble on David's face. On Camera A, there is none at all. It's just smooth, blurry skin. In all the shots on cement or gravel with brick walls in the background, Camera B shows tons of detail. You see all the gravel and the texture of the cement and the detail in the walls and in the bushes and trees and even in his clothing. The Camera A footage of those same shots has no detail at all. Stop the video at the point when David is with one of his daughters on the slide, and you can see tons and tons of detail in the Camera B footage. His beard stubble and skin texture is so clear. And his daughter's hair looks great. But the Camera A footage has no detail at all. His skin is just smooth white space. The same for all the background gravel and cement and foliage. And the Camera A footage was almost always slightly out of focus and blurry.
      I had no idea which camera was A and which was B when I watched the comparison, but the B footage was SO much better. Like you, I was astonished when David started his discussion by saying that the image quality from the two was identical. I have no idea how he could come to that conclusion. There was such a large difference. And it has nothing to do with sharpness or any kind of "over sharpened" GoPro look. It was all about simple detail and texture and focus and a balanced exposure. It's not like Camera B recorded sharpened beard stubble and gravel and Camera A recorded more cinematic, unsharpened beard stubble and gravel. In the Camera A footage, there simply was no beard stubble or gravel. It just recorded smooth surfaces with little to no detail at all.
      There are still lots of reasons for someone to buy the Action 3 over the Hero 11. David listed a bunch of those: cheaper price; less buggy; the quick switch button; the ability to see the video on the smartphone app while you are recording; better battery life; the magnetic mounting system; etc. And perhaps all of that is enough for some people to outweigh the issue of video quality. I can understand that. But to say that the sample video clips in this Camera A vs Camera B comparison are identical is really quite strange. They weren't even close to identical. I'm not sure how David can't see that. He's usually pretty reliable in his video reviews and comparisons.
      David's conclusion was that it all comes down to preference in terms of which look you prefer and that some people like the "over sharpened" GoPro look. But that seems like an inaccurate conclusion. I didn't see a difference in sharpness. I just saw lots of detail in the Camera B footage while the Camera A footage had smooth surfaces with very little detail.

    David thanks for the video. Timely in my case. I have the DJI Osmo Action and I love it but I’m thinking I need to upgrade to the 3. First, I use it while cycling and I bought 3 1300mAh batteries to help extend battery life. I’m on the bike sometimes for 2-3 hours and the batteries just don’t last. DJI says that’s about as good as it gets for the Osmo Action. Second, I have a front and rear mount on my bike and it’s helpful to glance at my phone (also on a mount) to see what the camera sees, especially when using the rear mount. It’s very helpful to see traffics coming up from behind. The bugaboo is the battery and SD card indicator font is so small I can’t see it while riding. I asked DJI if font could be increased and they said no. No way I can do it on my iPhone 13 either. Don’t know if this would be any better with the Action 3 but thought I’d check with you to get your thoughts.

    Camera B hands down had better clarity, better near and far focus/sharpness, better colors, better dynamic range, more contrast, and the underwater color looked waaaaay more natural with her skin tone than A. The wind sucked on both but on B it didn't sound like a blown out speaker where... A did! I'm crossing my fingers B is the GoPro because that's what I have but even still my GoPro doesn't look like Camera A did in these shots so there's that! Hahahaha Woooohoo it was the GoPro!!! Next point of fairness, YOU CAN PUT THE RODE WIRELESS GO II ON THE GoPro so don't be trying to act like DJI has a leg up with audio there! In the final aspect of this, I would 100% buy the Hero 11 again and again! I'll take less battery life and shorter stress testing in lieu of significantly better image quality and performance! Knock on wood, I have yet to experience any buggy issues with my Hero 11 but I'm also not using it as any form of an A cam so it doesn't get pushed as a main cam would nor should it.

The Rode Wireless GO II works great on the GoPro, but in comparison to the DJI Wireless mic setup, the ease of use goes to DJI. With my GoPro, I need the MediaMod, then the Wireless GO with a cable running into the media mod. It's a great solution and sounds awesome, but the DJI Wireless mic plugs straight into the camera and overall I like the DJI Wireless mic system over the Rode Wireless. The thing is, this comparison is like comparing a camera that's 94% fantastic to one that's 98% fantastic. You really can't go wrong either way in my opinion!

      I had the exact same experience. I've spent a fortune on batteries for my GoPro Hero 9. In a very short time, all of the batteries swelled up and I had to throw them away and buy new ones. I've lost count of how many batteries I've gone through. I could have bought an entire camera for the price of those batteries. Now, I've replaced them all with the new white Enduro batteries. I'm hoping that they won't swell up like the old ones did.

    Not hard to tell as far as video quality goes, picked out the DJI right away, there was no 'tie' in the video quality... The shadows are still just mushy and muddled for the DJI. For me video wins over all, I never run my camera long enough for the over heating to be a problem. But I can totally see how someone that does vlogging prefer the DJI as they may have clips that running longer.

    Thanks for the vid, I checked them out last fall but didn't hear much since.. As a pilot who uses cams on the outside of the plane I would much rather have the DJI, my gopro's stop working and never last in cold weather. Plus the no remote with preview really bad, I'd like to see on my phone if my shot is still good. Not like I can get out of the plane midflight to check it out.. LOL

      Yeah, for use cases like that, the Action 3 is 100% the way to go👍

      @@DavidManningvlogCan you confirm that if you buy a osmo action 3 now it will not have the focus issue.. Thanks.. Keep seeing people very confused on this issue, I thought it was fixed 6 months ago.

    A couple of things I'd like to add from my own experiences of using both cameras. Battery life is definitely one area where the Action 3 excels. However, you can get a significant boost to battery life with the the GoPro by turning off the wireless function when you don't need it. I was told recently by one GoPro athlete that it can be as much as 30% more, and certainly, I've noticed a huge difference by doing this.
    Overheating: I often use action cameras to film my kayak freestyle practice so I can judge what I'm doing wrong and make corrections. When I was doing this in the swimming pool over winter, I've often left my GoPro running with Hypersmooth turned off and it's never overheated. Amazingly, it was the Action 3 that shut down from overheating! I wasn't expecting that.
    One other thing that you can add to the Action 3 benefits is the ultra-wide lens that doesn't need a dynamic stretch mode like Hyperview. Overall I still prefer my Hero11 day-to-day as I prefer the image quality, and I don't like that I can't adjust the sharpness setting on the Action 3. But, damn, the ultra-wide on the Action 3 is to die for and is incredible for POV shots. I really hope that GoPro has something similar up its sleeve for the HERO12.
    There is one last thing you could have included on the list. And that's a consideration in choice if you are a true power user, for example the highly customisable Labs firmware for the GoPro.
    But yeah, it's a very tough call, and it's undeniable that the Action 3 is a very serious rival to the GoPro and offers amazing value for the money as well. But, it's all good in my eyes because it spurs GoPro on to make the next camera even better, followed by DJI etc, and so the cycle continues. We all benefit. As for being mad at your decision? Nah, that was a really good, considered video, dude.

      I don't care how many different setting you choose to use, the GoPro should simply work and it simply does not. GoPro SUX!
