    I need to address a few things before the comment section gets out of control and then even at that I'm probably not going to be able to stop people from saying something about safety ahead of time
    I've been injured just as many times with safety glasses on my eyes as without them and we often make a joke in the shop about the injuries with them on as opposed to not wearing them
    Somebody mentioned something about the lift not being let down on the safety locks and there's a reason for that you will never see me put a vehicle down on the safety locks or I should say rarely will you see that because I've had the lift malfunction with it on the locks and then have to call a tow truck to get the vehicle off of the lift and I'll never go through that again
    The third thing is hearing protection - this channel is about showing people repairs and also helping people as well as putting the customer first but this channel is definitely not about a bunch of safety stuff and I honestly don't expect the safety Hawks to come out of the woodwork and start preaching
    Let's all be a part of a community and enjoy each other's videos and help and commentary and stuff like that but let a guy work the way he feels like he needs to work without you trying to get involved in that personal part of his life, to be honest with you it's not needed we've all been doing this long enough to where we know what we should be doing we just choose not to do it that way and by you telling somebody to do something or what's in their best interest you're not doing anything but just making that person somewhat agitated they know what they're supposed to be doing
    I love you all to the fullest extent and you guys are great people but the safety commentary.....just no lol it isnt needed
    I appreciate you guys being concerned, trust me I got this I've been doing this for a long time I'm not going to change the way I'm doing things

      I was wearing safety glasses when I was working on the front of my 90 Camaro and I was grinding on the frame horn and I got the brush out had it in the drill and I was drilling away on the frame horn a piece of debris shot out from the wire wheel and went right in the bottom of my eyeball and I had to go to the doctor and have them Dremel it out of my eyeball
      Had my safety glasses not been on my face it wouldn't have bounced off my cheek then hit my glasses and then went right into my eye

      Tools and knowledge are expensive. In order to do the job well and in the time people demand these days and still get to feed and clothe your kids, a man has to charge a fair price. Fair is a two sided coin. Both parties should get every bit of what they deserve. That’s fair.

    Always had a little sweet spot with these. My first garage job was at a cab company, and we had about 6-8 of these on the road. Biggest issue were the transmissions going out around 225k, other than that, they were tanks.
    Ik mine was older, but I had a 97 awd with the 5.0, absolutely loved it! It was a complete monster in the snow. Got it for free not running, threw a $75 sensor in it, fired right up. Everything was near perfect on it. Definitely wish I didn't get rid of it and just kept taking the time to made it perfect perfect.

    not sure who invented lubed for life suspension but thats all i have in my fleet - until its replaced with an aftermarket piece ! i have gm vehicles with 12 grease zerks on the front end alone with 250,000 and my trucks ball joints lasted 465,000 before replacing !

    • @peterl2017
      @peterl2017 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If you notice, the ball joint he was replacing was greasable. Lots of greasable parts wear out especially if not greased regularly plus some do not have a sealed boot allowing water in. I have seen lots of lubed for life parts last a very long time. The only parts I really have faith in to last a long time, and likely never need replacement again are Moog.

    • @JAMESWUERTELE
      @JAMESWUERTELE 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m still on the fence, I have grease zerks on my current 2 brand new rides. I’ll grease them every 5k. I however usually go back with sealed ujoints etc. I’ve had better luck with sealed. Just my 2 cents.

    • @peterl2017
      @peterl2017 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JAMESWUERTELE A big part of it is if the part actually gets greased or not, and how often. With extended oil change intervals now, it can be a while before greasing - IF the shop actually does it. Someone doing their own services may do it more religiously. As I said all are not equal - some ball joints will have a sealed boot with a weep hole for any excess grease(better), others will just have the boot in the box and just fits over the ball/socket and does not really keep the elements out. I have greased this type and see a lot of water come out - imagine a joint like this doesn’t get greased for a while. Lots of places do not grease everything - time is money. It takes time to properly service say a full size older truck - ball joints, tie rod ends, pitman arm, idler arm, u joints.....more time than can be allotted for the price of many oil change specials. This was always a pet peeve of mine - a proper oil change should cost more than what places are charging.

      @@peterl2017 I did tie rods one time, greaseable units, idk if i was pressed for time the few times i did oil changes (5k kms maybe 6k kms so like 3500 or so mile oil changes) and after a year or two in the rustbelt yeah they got fked bad. I got like 3 or so zerks on each side now from multiple different things, and it gets a good grease every time, if not AT LEAST when i change over my tires for winter ect.

At 200K I replaced the power steering pump and steering box. Both failed at about the same time. Cars today, regardless of the manufacturer, do not last as long.

    Speaking of ball joints - Have you noticed that aftermarket ball joints are fused into the control arms? That makes removal almost impossible. Even my mighty Milwaukee high-torque impact couldn’t budge the suckers. So I went on Amazon and instead of buying new ball joints I bought new upper and lower control arms with fused-in ball joints. It wasn’t even that expensive, perhaps because I have a mass produced Ford Expedition XLT 5.4 l. But just wondering if you’re seeing the same thing, I.e. ball joints fused into the arms.

    I had a silver 07 that seemed cursed. Thermostat housing started leaking while wife was driving and it overheated causing the head to warp. Shop right next to my work fixed it but gave it back with what sounded like a cam chain rattle. Finally got him to agree something wasn't right and he was about to fix whatever he did wrong and the week in was supposed to leave it with him he was murdered by the guy that drove his tow truck. Then the transmission went into limp mode and a transmission shop couldn't figure it out and just wanted to replace it. I had to just get rid of it. Before that happened though it was a good vehicle for the couple years I had it.

I put greasable ones in when I can (I know, no guarantee they’ll ever see a grease gun again) but even those are getting hard to find for some of the newer models. I’ve seen pickups go to the junkyard that had greaseable ball joints on them that are still good after 100,000 miles. All the class 6,7,8 trucks have grease fittings all over them, we have the factory install a central greasing system on ours, pays for itself by fewer repairs

      The ball joints on these things are easy to change but just about everything else blows. The 4.0L engine needs to be removed to replace the timing chains which is a somewhat common failure. Then you have the 5r55 which is known as one of the worst transmissions ever created, coupled to that engine. All of the wheel bearings are press in style and they have a somewhat high failure rate too.

      A runner up is the 4.0 OHV V6 (till 2000). Some people argue that it is tougher engine. Plenty of 500K examples. Very high torque engine at low RPM. Mine has 4.10 gears.

      Keep the revs down otherwise you'll have cracked trans bellhousings, loose ignition coils, loose or missing oil caps, as well as a dead starter due to the severe vibration from the flat-plane crank 5.2 "Voodoo".....the car itself is awesome, but the engine doesn't last. I would stay away.

    I own an 09 Explorer. That was the last generation of the the “real” Explorers. 2011+ is 👎

      My 2009 4.6L is still as strong as ever. Only issue is the front bearings, at 250K I've already done them twice.
