- Vice-President Kamala Harris has addressed voters for the first time since she secured enough support to become the Democratic Party's nominee for US president.
She said Donald Trump "wants to take our country backward", speaking at a campaign rally in Milwaukee, in the critical swing state of Wisconsin.
Harris said she will spend the coming weeks uniting the Democratic Party “so we are ready to win in November”.

Can't wait to see how many will vote in the comming US election. So much is at stake but only 64% voted last time. The same goes for Britain where every one wanted change but only 60% voted. What the heck is wrong with these two countries and its voters. 2022 general election in Denmark had a 84% participation. Other countries is typically 70-90% because it is consideret a privilege and duty.
A few reasons:
(For both US & UK)
1. Countries with FPTP have an estimated 5-6% lower turnout than countries with Proportional Representation, as many people feel their votes don't matter so they don't bother to vote.
(For US specifically)
2. Most US states have much more stringent requirements for voter registration than European countries, suppressing turnout.
3. There's a demonstrable correlation between population density and turnout. Lower density = harder to get to polling locations = lower turnout.
4. Turnout in swing states is actually much higher, usually around 75%-80%. Since the electoral college system makes the election decided by maybe 5-10 swing states, many voters in non-swing states don't see a point in voting. (Especially if the down-ballot races are also seen as uncompetitive)

This is all part of the political game. It's the same reason why big democratic names like Obama who encouraged Biden to step down knowing she would get the nomination but still hasn't publicly endorsed her yet. He doesn't want to seem flaky in his previous support of Biden. The Democratic party is strategically trying to strengthen their base first given that this is the first time in 40 years that a sitting president has dropped out of a race and given the nomination to the sitting vice president instead. But that time it ended miserably for the Democrats who then got crushed by a landslide by Reagan. The Democratic party is endorsing Kamala strongly but carefully. And in turn, Kamala is also trying to unify the Democratic party without seemingly like she's forcing herself on the American people too quickly. It will be interesting to see how her campaign progresses but it's all pretty clear what she and the Democratic party are doing now. They're trying to play as safe as they can instead of hitting the ground running and being overconfident like they did with Hillary.
