Currently working as a power engineer, however I’m looking to get into industrial electrical. Really enjoy your videos, especially this series. Keep it up
i’m 21 years old with a year of experience in commercial electrical work. got offered a job with a rig electrician contractor. Wouldn’t count towards my apprentice hours, would you guys still recommend it for me??
Trying to make my way into this specific field. Started in trades last year in Ontario. I am totally green. This video series has been great insight. What do you suggest when approaching companies with having no electrical experience? Is it all persistence or is there something you think would give an edge?
In my country, we have different educational system. I'm currently in night school(wanted a different career), and my approach was to email every single company in my city(which I know employed industrial electricians), and asked for an apprentice job. Just got a job 2 days ago at a company, which manifactures and do maintenance work on industrial overhead cranes. Cast a wide net and be persistent. Phone them, etc. And when you get an interview, just show them you are really interested learning this area.
Definitely appreciate the videos. I'm currently a residential/commercial electrician. The money I'm seeing offered in industrial is too good to pass up. I'm trying to make the switch and this is a good starting point I see what day to day activities might look like. All the help I can get is awesome. Thanks
Hey Bee Dub, Thanks for the great feedback. You'll be doing fairly similar tasks that you would as a resi/commercial electrician, except on a larger scale. Also the equipment you'll be working on needs to be rated for hazardous areas if working in the oil field
I don’t know if you’re active with this TH-cam channel anymore, but Im a first year apprentice(IBEW)and this is the exact work I’m trying to get into. Do you have any recommendations for where I can learn more about controls/plcs? Books, videos, other youtube channels etc? Thanks!
If I am qualified to be an industrial electrician, does this mean I am also qualified to be a residential electrician? I know industrial electricians need more training, so would my training surpass that of a residential electrician allowing me to be qualified for a residential electrician?
Industrial Electricians are generally working with more complex control circuitry and find it easier to transition into a residential environment if need be. What you rarely get is the opposite. Putting a residential Electrician in a Situation where he needs to calibrate a pressure transmitter and adjust the Range via a Haart. Then that’s unlikely. But both are very different and have there niche code requirements. I’ve seen good and bad industrial electricians as well as residential it’s all relative to the trained individual.
Great point Tommy, certainly that would be cheaper but it wouldn’t work for this application. The motor was spinning a disc stack centrifuge. There needed to be a ramp of time of 10 minutes to go from 1hz-60hz. An across the line starter would not accommodate the massive inrush current with this set up.
Correct! In the application it was being used for in the video actually made it a general area so no area classified equipment was required. The company got a real good deal on the building so they bought it.
Can you do a video explaining what is the job of the industrial electrician speaking very slowly please? I'm looking for resources for my french students who are trying to learn english but there isn't much on internet. Also could you show some of the tools you use in your job ? Thank you
Not quite, there are factors you are unaware of where some sheet metal screws would not do the trick in this application. I had to go overkill on this install.

Is that VFD enclosure suitable for what looks like a class 1 division 2 hazardous location?
Great catch John.

@@jurassicsparks5220 thank you so much
Gotta love the Big Ass EX’D enclosures
Why isn´t that last panel anti-explosion?
why not add a starting circuit? time delay, inductors, and an extra contactor seems like it would cheaper than an entirely new vfd.

That plant room looks like it used to be a flameproof installation.
Correct!
