Referring to the EICR, the same thing happened to the alarm industry several decades ago. There was suddenly an influx of alarm companies and some of these companies would literally work for peanuts. British standards tend to look at the way you install and not what equipment and level of equipment you put in, which often led to substandard installations with not enough coverage. There will be companies like whats happened PAT testing who will be looking at banging out these reports. The warning label is for the nominal voltage to earth which is 230 Volts. You don't need to put a 400 Volt sticker on at all. 230 Volt is all that's needed. 👍
@@mb-electricalservices I personally would not fit a 230 volt warning label on a three phase isolator or any other equipment that contains 400 volt . Regulation 514.10.1 is very misleading. But if you go to the on site guide page 57 . 6.3 it says a warning label stating the maximum voltage present must be provided where it can be seen . The regulation book reg 514.10.1 words this a bit different. Any phase to earth will give you 230 volts . But the enclosure will still have 400 volts inside . So fitting a 230 volt label on a three phase isolator would cause confusion. .. I would not let my lads fit 230 volt labels on equipment that has 400 volts enclosed .. I have also spoken to NICEIC engineer about this item on are last inspection Vist ..

The part of the cover on the junction box above the light switch can be in or out, however, for just a bit more room inside am shallow box it would be best to have the part facing outward. The junction boxes here in the u.s. don't have that kind of preference as they just have a flat cover that screws to the box. I am not an electrician, however, I have about a year and a half of experience with residential electrical due to college and having to rewire a few circuits in my dad's house, and I also chose to wire my own house. All of which I wired to code per the electrical standards.
VEM quote a default £147 + VAT ( £176.40 ) on behalf of Allen Harris estate agents EICR !! A proper inspection is at least £300-350 absolute min. in my opinion and I agree with you. Something is happening with EICR Landlord certs for letting agents.
Alway did lid bulge out, flat side against box, gasket will seal 100%,but most lids I got were just a flat disc, so could go either way. Other day seen a galvinised 3 way junction, turned out it was made in aluminum, cheaper & from China.
I had the same the other day. A customer contacted me for a price on a EICR i gave them a cost of £350.00 plus vat. The customer come back and told me they can get it done for £120.00 with no vat. I told the customer if i am putting my name to an electrical installation i will do a full test not a ( DRIVE BY).
Perhaps the prices you were told got mixed up £107 for eicr and £290 for board change.maybe that was excluding VAT. Yes, it's still very cheap-but makes more sense.
a 10 way fusebox SPD RCBO board, with 6 RCBOs, a tails gland (not upgrading the tails) and some intumescent grommets is even fitting the version of the same board without the SPD is 158 plus vat materials only. the only way you could be fitting a board for 107 plus vat is if you had no spd, cheapest brand twin RCD board, didn't upgrade tails, didn't use intumescent grommets, no new tails gland, tested nothing.
Really good quality videos with a clear and detailed explanation of the works going on , i have started using Zappi chargers as a result of your channel, keep up the good work. I had a client show me an EICR with a plastic fuseboard code 2.
Nice job. Shame there is no Auxiliary contact in the isolator you could of connected that stop circuit through. Saves the potential of the isolator being under full load when it gets turned off and then back on.
My vote is lid bulge out. I think it's to give you just a little bit extra space and recess the screws. Although I don't think it matters so I think it can be reversed if you wanted to go the other way. But that's just my guest from visiting the UK a few years back and looking at all the electrical.
I charge £450 for a EICR. Takes me roughly 4 and bit hours - 5 hours for 3 bedroom detached house. If the consumer unit needs changing and bonding needs running I charge £400 for labour plus materials on top + Vat. All includes a install certificate afterwards as per usual with anything anyone installs.
wow I feel like I've way undercut myself. My area EICR's are usually in the 150-200 bracket! will certainly do my research before giving anymore quotes.
So you charged 450 for an EICR and then another 400 to swap the board - having already done the testing and inspection? Nice money if you can get it - can’t believe many people are willing to pay that .
CR box lids dent in....dont ask me why, just always do.....5 years ago i was charging 400 quid minimum for a consumer unit change....including the test.
It seems to me that the firm offering the CU change for such a cheap price is not going to change any or very few CUs. They are tempting the customer to go with them, they will do a minimum EICR and walk as long as the CU is not on fire. The odd CU that they are forced to change will be absorbed by the overall profits of super cursory inspections. Indeed, if you were inclined to look the other way you could just about justify never having to replace a CU because it has worked for many years in its current state of shame.
I'm guessing the damage to the armoured was due to the vibrations caused by the motor against the sheet metal. Could you have used some form of masking like you use on the fusebox rear? That way it won't get damaged again.
Hi Jordan , I also think Kevin could be right about the pricing .Price low to get through the door , then up sell with faults & earthing etc . Not a good way to keep customers on the long term ! Great video 😀
You can absolutely use Wago 221s in the appropriate MF box in an inaccessible location. The original Wagobox does not fit them, but there are adapters and there's a variant for 221s and 2273s. Check the MF instruction sheet next time you open one.
3-phase 10 possible combinations - L1 and L2 - L1 and L3 - L1 and Neutral - L1 and Earth - L2 and L3 - L2 and Neutral - L2 and Earth - L3 and Neutral - L3 and Earth - Neutral and Earth Very quick though - the danger of making mistake is so much greater on 3-phases. You should have a tick box on piece of paper or some nice tool?? Just to double check. Great work and very interesting. Thanks Jordan. Did you take photo of the phase rotation? you could check phase rotation on the fluke 1664fc.
Nice job as always! I think the bulgy part on the box goes outside, since otherwise the rubber has to stretch over it inside the box and that may lead to small openings or at least more stress on the rubber. I'm curious: Why did u spray the box with Zinc spray?🤓 Bests
Not come across anyone charging so low for a CU change and EICR, I would have done the same as you and advised caution if they went with them. But I would want to check their work once finished and check a few of their EICR results. Professional curiosity, to make sure it is safe for the tenants and report any dangerous workmanship. Personally I think the "bulgy bit" sticks outwards providing a compression around all edges and also around the M4 screw threads. With it sticking outwards there wouldn't be a compression around the M4 threads it seems. I'm trying to think of a reason why it bulges at all. The only thing I can think of, is it provides a bit of protection for the M4 screw heads. Should an object hit the galvanized box. P.S. For the flexible conduit, I like to use the rigid conduit at low levels up to the roof then go out of that with the flexible conduit. You can use regular threaded conduit adapters onto a flexible conduit gland. Or the more expensive route of using a specific spiral flexible conduit gland. Which does the same thing but ends up been more expensive.
Pricing such a dark area sometimes. Obviously it depends on the board to be changed. I always go between (for rcbo c/u) 350 and 500 up to 6 breakers.. I use fusebox normally although my favourite is the hager. Be interesting to know from anyone here regarding prices. Always good to hear others opinions. 🤝
Thoses prices are stupid but there are sole traders in my area still doing rewires of 3 beds for less than £2500 EICR and gas safe company’s doing both in package deals for less than £200 the race to the bottom is most definitely on
wow, I think what you replied is good. I think I would have also added this is the services that are included and this is the brand that I fit which is quality and they must be using the using the cheapest one which might not even be up to the current standards assuming it's not reused. My installation will The last and you will probably have multiple people in for repairs on there's. obviously they're looking for a second opinion because they're not sure what they're getting either, or they're looking to get it even cheaper and in that case I would assume you wouldn't even get a reply.
You had me doubting myself as I'm using Wago 221s on a job just now and had counted on them being classed as maintenance free. They are MF when used together with a compatible MF certified enclosure like the Wagobox 221 or Wagobox XL. DId you remember to fit a "wiring colours to two versions of BS7671" label?
They are likely going in to change the consumer unit for £400, and will then test out afterwards, unless the find anything horrific in the first 20 mins, in which case they will just do a failed EICR for £290 and quote higher to sort out the awkward ones. Edit: Or I suppose it's very good and they can just whip through EICR testing "some" sockets and "some" switches, along with coooker/shower for £290.
Refer the issue of drive-by EICR’s to your registration body, the national association of landlords, the tenants association, and the press, to fully publicise this, because in the end the tenants of these properties suffer by living in an inadequately tested or maintained property.
Stat away from 3 phase, totally different game.Look at the Regs,If there is no earth you need to run a separate earth along the armoured, even if it's a TT system
I've seen (and used) self-amalgamating tape on antenna and telephone installations many many years old, the only problem being that it's impossible to remove. It is incredible stuff and would have been more than enough for your job, however, I see why you changed the cable. But, I do wonder if you shouldn't have some company. In the factory I ran it was a requirement that nobody would work alone in the way that you do. I realise that an assistant needs pay but they can also save a lot of time, particularly if you are running cables (in your case, they can also hold the camera).
£300 for a consumer unit replacement around here, that's a BG dual RCD board. Don't see the problem with BG, if it meets UK spec...then it's all good... Sadly, if you give the customer a quote for a Hager / MK, Vs BG.. they will always go with the cheapest..
Ok so pricing varies around the Uk but you charge more than 240 + vat for a 3 bed EICR and at least a grand for a board swap ? Fair play Jordon I’m not saying you shouldn’t charge those prices but in West Midlands that’s about twice the going rate. Basically then you are working on £500 as a day rate it seems. Sparks like me here can probs win work on a recommendation basis on anywhere 175 to 250 a day beyond that no chance especially if pricing versus Jonny no scheme.

14:26 that is a confined space my friend.
May even be a zoned area and the DNO supply and mains are in zone 2
@@c8bbr what? I was just thinking that had 1 entrance and exit. Can you enlighten me please.
@@tresslerj1985 A grain store is a dusty environment and potentially explosive so it could under a Dust Atex zone and if it is the sparky should be Compex trained for dust and yes from my training I would class the ventilation shaft as a confined space so ideally he should have confined space training to!
Thanks for the comment!
VEM quote a default £147 + VAT ( £176.40 ) on behalf of Allen Harris estate agents EICR !! A proper inspection is at least £300-350 absolute min. in my opinion and I agree with you. Something is happening with EICR Landlord certs for letting agents.
I totally agree
Nice job, thanks for sharing 👍
Awesome video. I love these videos that follow up.
👍
Alway did lid bulge out, flat side against box, gasket will seal 100%,but most lids I got were just a flat disc, so could go either way.
Other day seen a galvinised 3 way junction, turned out it was made in aluminum, cheaper & from China.
Interesting thanks!
I agree that might make more sense. Equivalent to MOT. Cheap to get one but good upseller
Bet there will be a board change and a load of remedial work to be done,
a 10 way fusebox SPD RCBO board, with 6 RCBOs, a tails gland (not upgrading the tails) and some intumescent grommets is
even fitting the version of the same board without the SPD is 158 plus vat materials only.
the only way you could be fitting a board for 107 plus vat is if you had no spd, cheapest brand twin RCD board, didn't upgrade tails, didn't use intumescent grommets, no new tails gland, tested nothing.
I would have thought The Bulgy Bit would go In by default and out when things get tight, Nice Video (as Always) Jordon
Really good quality videos with a clear and detailed explanation of the works going on , i have started using Zappi chargers as a result of your channel, keep up the good work.
I had a client show me an EICR with a plastic fuseboard code 2.
Awesome thanks. Code 2 on plastic CU is only if it’s got signs of overheating really.
If you’re doing a fair bit of heat shrink and you’re after a new toy you can get cordless heat guns - dewalt do a 18v one
Nice I’ve got a corded one already and don’t use it much
Nice job.
Shame there is no Auxiliary contact in the isolator you could of connected that stop circuit through. Saves the potential of the isolator being under full load when it gets turned off and then back on.
ahh here again! this should be interesting 😊 darth sparkey... use 3 phase mains... luke, use three phase mains! 😂😂😂😂
Haha thanks
your the best mate
My vote is lid bulge out. I think it's to give you just a little bit extra space and recess the screws. Although I don't think it matters so I think it can be reversed if you wanted to go the other way. But that's just my guest from visiting the UK a few years back and looking at all the electrical.
Thanks
3:20 Big incomer? 😂😂😂😂 Residential Standard in some countries... I‘ve got 4x35mm2 CU TN-C at HOME!
Small stuff that, was working with 50mm 4 core and up in 1994 until 2006,wrestling pythons I called it
I charge £450 for a EICR. Takes me roughly 4 and bit hours - 5 hours for 3 bedroom detached house. If the consumer unit needs changing and bonding needs running I charge £400 for labour plus materials on top + Vat. All includes a install certificate afterwards as per usual with anything anyone installs.
£540 inc Vat on EICR cost.
That sounds like a proper price
wow I feel like I've way undercut myself. My area EICR's are usually in the 150-200 bracket! will certainly do my research before giving anymore quotes.
Jonathan Stephens no mate those are b#sh1t prices no ones going to pay more than 200 for half day labour outside of central London
You can use the 221 as maintenance free as long as you use the spacers.
I do mainly commercial now but I was charging £300 for a mains board change 10 years ago
A rusty box does not mean you need to change it for a shiny new one, it's not electrically unsafe. Given the environment a clean and paint
Its agricultural - where's the RCD?
Nice one Jordan. Always entertaining
Thanks Chris!
Great video Jordan. Are you certain the board change wasn’t labour only, no one can run a business on those prices
Thanks! Yeah it’s ridiculous.
No it was rodent damage
I’d put the box lid the opposite way to you but I guess it’s personal choice as long as the gaskets fitted I can’t see an issue either way
Hi Jordan , I also think Kevin could be right about the pricing .Price low to get through the door , then up sell with faults & earthing etc .
Not a good way to keep customers on the long term ! Great video 😀
How about replacing that old motor with new IE3 one?
You can absolutely use Wago 221s in the appropriate MF box in an inaccessible location. The original Wagobox does not fit them, but there are adapters and there's a variant for 221s and 2273s. Check the MF instruction sheet next time you open one.
Nice thanks

Very quick though - the danger of making mistake is so much greater on 3-phases. You should have a tick box on piece of paper or some nice tool?? Just to double check. Great work and very interesting. Thanks Jordan. Did you take photo of the phase rotation? you could check phase rotation on the fluke 1664fc.

I’m going college to become a electrician any tips or tricks that might be helpful?
Nice job as always!
I think the bulgy part on the box goes outside, since otherwise the rubber has to stretch over it inside the box and that may lead to small openings or at least more stress on the rubber.
I'm curious: Why did u spray the box with Zinc spray?🤓
Bests
Hey, do you still have that fire alarm panel form the scout hut?
No I threw it away. Why?
@@artisanelectrics Well I am a hobbyist in fire alarms and I really want a panel because my homemade panel is very good and they cost quite a bit!
@@artisanelectrics but yea
What code do you use to fail that isolator. Was clearly just deteriorated, but it didn’t impair it’s function. Looked like job creation to me
What was wrong with the existing isolator?
Great video! Well said! It's a shame some people go for cheapest in an industry with its fair share of cowboys and cheap rubbish.
Some people have little choice.
Thoses prices are stupid but there are sole traders in my area still doing rewires of 3 beds for less than £2500 EICR and gas safe company’s doing both in package deals for less than £200 the race to the bottom is most definitely on
It’s crazy
Madness is near me 2.5/3k is about the going rate for a 2/3 rewire.
Does the fan have soft starting or is DOL? 🤙🇦🇺
I agree I wouldn't get out of bed for less than a grand for a consumer unit change
What was your 3 phase voltage
wow, I think what you replied is good. I think I would have also added this is the services that are included and this is the brand that I fit which is quality and they must be using the using the cheapest one which might not even be up to the current standards assuming it's not reused. My installation will The last and you will probably have multiple people in for repairs on there's. obviously they're looking for a second opinion because they're not sure what they're getting either, or they're looking to get it even cheaper and in that case I would assume you wouldn't even get a reply.
bulge out or the gasket doesn't seal and you lose the ip rating. flat surface to flat surface
Good point about the CU change, no way could I install that at that cost. I 100% agree that something needs to be done with this 'race to the bottom'.
Thanks!
Good call I actually forgot to fit a label
@@artisanelectrics That defo needs one with it being three phase.
Phew! I was about to double check as I've just used some 221s in a MF scenario...but I put them in an XL box 👍
Great video👍👍. I am an electrician in Norway so its interesting to see how you are working in the UK😊👍
Nice thanks!
5:50 Darth vader mask. lmao id be the same surrounded by all that asbestos.
Refer the issue of drive-by EICR’s to your registration body, the national association of landlords, the tenants association, and the press, to fully publicise this, because in the end the tenants of these properties suffer by living in an inadequately tested or maintained property.
6:11 tester wrong way round to test if it’s working
LOL it really doesn't make any different which way you do it
Stat away from 3 phase, totally different game.Look at the Regs,If there is no earth you need to run a separate earth along the armoured, even if it's a TT system
How did you have that much SWA in your van stock, that was lucky 👍🏻
Jordan, why not bring the Tesla for a spin and put the old tool box in its boot ??
👍
That's for those late-night house calls to change light bulbs
I'll say put it faceing in giving you a tighter seal
At 2300 “wago connectors of course are not maintenance free”, according to wago they are maintenance free
I believe they are maintenance Free when used with the new 221 maintenance free junction Box.
While I agree that 107 is far too cheap for a new board but over £1000. What are you fitting?
I only fit Hager RCBO boards with SPD
Ok so pricing varies around the Uk but you charge more than 240 + vat for a 3 bed EICR and at least a grand for a board swap ? Fair play Jordon I’m not saying you shouldn’t charge those prices but in West Midlands that’s about twice the going rate. Basically then you are working on £500 as a day rate it seems. Sparks like me here can probs win work on a recommendation basis on anywhere 175 to 250 a day beyond that no chance especially if pricing versus Jonny no scheme.
22:33 phone the manufacture
Look on the bright side, those 'electricians' quoting that low will never be able to afford a Tesla 😉
Exactly! 😉
All equipment installed in an Agricultural Installation should be a Minimum of IP44 (Special; Locations) Equipment doesn't comply.
It was replacement of an existing switch not designing a new install
@@artisanelectrics To try and help you going forward, Anything you do should be to current BS7671 18th ed.

Very interesting video Jordan I totally agree with changing the switch which was rusty it would only of got worse equally the new one is coated with rust resistant paint. Price wise reme be if you pay peanuts you get monkeys nuff said
I know I’m a little bit late :), but i think this £107 for change consumer unit is only work pricing and you need to extra pay for materials. Then you have £400 for one day work and I think is more realistic.
Good to see your sticking to your guns with your pricing.keeps your work standards high
Yeah definitely
Got to be some sort of a misunderstanding with the consumer unit hasn’t there? Either that or they’re lying. Excellent videos thanks.
Who know
I would trust your work. I've never seen you leave a jobsite in unsafe condition.
