To be fair, this isn’t true industrial. True industrial is wiring and fitting off 6.6KV 3 phase motors. Instrumentation and control wiring for closed or open loops. Control panels full of relays, contactors, Trip Amps etc!
True industrial is just strut racks and rigid pipe all day lol at least in the us. This looks like a regular commercial job to me.
it is harder when you throw in conduit as well ,done both industrial and domestic,and always find industrial more rewarding because 90% is on show 👍
Depends what you're doing, a nice clean site like that it's a doddle to work in and nice to just job and home. When you get older factories that have really oily, swarf and dust ridden atmospheres and anywhere you touch leaves a trail it's not so pleasant and takes ages to get anything done because half your job is cleaning what you just put in. Plus if they're older places they're generally stupidly hot as it's blown warm air heating.

A domestic spark has to wear many other caps to wear while they do their work - pulling up and refitting while trying to leave the décor in the same state; industrial/commercial you more often are working with ducts/trays/false ceilings and other designed for access routing voids, the complexity of the electrical system is greater but the physical installation typically requires less finesse.
Domestic and domestic only sparks are absolutely great at what they do and I’ll admit, being someone with experience in both I’d say domestic is more physically demanding and requires you to have to focus on as little damage as possible in the most efficient time possible whilst always having to deal with the pressure from customers who are usually a layman in regards to what it takes to get a job done (in particular occupied haha) but most domestic sparks struggle to crossover into the industrial side of things when it comes to the nitty gritty of Industrial work for example things like schematics, control panels, 3 phase equipment, PLC’s, DALI systems, Containment, Glanding and Termination of big cables (185’s, 240’s, etc) the list goes on, both require equal amounts of workmanship, finesse and attention to detail just in different ways, no sector of the electrical industry should be looked down upon from one another
@@dg9015 There’s been a new course released for a domestic electrician in the UK, however up until very recently every apprentice got the same NVQ Level 3, if you’re looking for an apprenticeship I’d seriously do your due diligence into the company you’re applying for, cause if they’re a purely domestic company and they put you through the domestic Electrician course, in-which you’d only be qualified to work within domestic dwellings you’re seriously limiting the potential for where you could take your career
Commercial is much better than residential for sure! You don't have to worry about all the house stuff, and running cable is typically easier. We had about a 100 meter/yard run that we had to go between offices and the production floor down a long hallway that had a lowered drywall ceiling, but no access between the concrete roof and plaster (drywall) at all except the ends. Our solution was a remote control car and tied thin pull string on and drive it all the way through down the hall and then could start heavier pulling rope and then used that to pull the wiring down. That was before cell phones and go-pros back in the 80's so we had to come up with creative solutions to the problems. This was one of the better / elegant solutions we came up with. You can't do that in an attic at a house for sure. At just over 750,000 sq ft (70,000 sq m) that facility was fun to work in.
Great to see Adam getting a different experience to add to his cap. One thing I will say is when you put in gutter bolts in trunking put it inside the trunking and the nut outside to stop burning the cable on the edges keep the videos coming 🦾
That site looks lovely and clean mate. I reckon you should pick up a job in a food factories anaerobic plant or maybe a council waste depot next time and see if you still like it so much.
Nice one fellas. John is a superstar. We work in all environments. True industrial (Motors, BMS, controls etc) is the hardest imo. Followed by domestic and lastly commercial. Thats in terms of the physical effort. In terms of difficulty in design and safe systems of work domestic is easiest. Not that it matters, least non of us are plumbers, imagine!?!

In US, it typically requires higher degree license and pays more too.
Interesting video Nick. If you are going back it may be worth moving those glands to one corner of the board and adding some bungs to the board. That will let a future spark gland there and also give a neater swoop on the cabling for the desired finish

Guidelines for working off ladders in industrial is any job that takes longer than 30 mins needs to be done from a platform, boom or scissor lift. Those ladders though, I wouldn’t get away with using those in work. They have to be inspected with a ticket on display and not conductive. Ours are fibreglass. Strange really when you think the scissor lift is metal.
That’s a new install. You want to try working in a factory that was built in the 1950’s, cables everywhere, pipes everywhere it’s like a climbing frame in our roof spaces and dirty.
Can you back this up with some references? To be honest I used to believe some of this until I realised its all down to the employers liability insurance, insurers hate ladders and enforce bigger access equipment because of the less risk in comparison to ladders. They enforce it like its a legal requirement but its BS! 😐
Nice video. Bottom or side entry to distribution board is prefered, as well as giving some thought to the next guy when you choose your gland placement.
The big box on the floor is for power factor correction. Commercial premises unlike residential premises are billed on their true usage so this can save them money.

It's probably a power factor correction unit to balance out the 3 phase supply making sure that all 3 phases are somewhat balanced

That was the sort of job a 2nd year apprentice might be given. Fair enough that they'd have Adam doing it, but wish they'd handed you BMS/EMS cabs to sort or main incomers to joint.

I really don’t understand people that don’t fit trunking on top of a dist board, so that it makes it easier to put in more cables at a later date.
Can't beat industrial work, all on the surface, no carpets or floorboards to lift, no furniture to move. I much prefer oil and brick dust to other peoples grime and dirt.
A lot of sites I have been on don't allow steps ladders .

Any half decent sparky can learn domestic within a short period of time. Same can’t be said of a domestic spark going into an industrial environment.

Never run SWA,s over the front of trunking 🤔😅 , what do I know ? 50 years from a plug top on a toaster , to pulling a fuse out for a tea urn , which shut down a nuclear reactor, 11kv slip ring 3 phase motors . The contacting electrician is a jack of all trades and tries to be a master of one . Keep going lads to pay my pension and thanks for the video .
I qualified last year and just passed my 2391-52. Glad to hear Adam is doing well with his NVQ... I had to get my local MP involved with my college regarding my NVQ as my assessor was telling me it wasn't his job to mark my NVQ which was already half marked by my previous assessor... Held up my apprenticeship for 2 years!!!
I should of qualified April 2021 but still not had the option to do my AM2 and heard nothing of the college for 2 months now. Did you email your local mp?
@@MALContractors Yes... Had to in the end... Funnily enough the day after he emailed them on my behalf they started responding to my backlog of emails which had just been ignored for months. It's funny how quickly they start working when you get somebody like an MP involved...
Probably also helped I had written evidence (a text message) from my new assessor basically saying it's not his job...

@@MALContractors If you have already gone through 5 assessors I would start ASAP. Every day they arnt progressing your apprenticeship is another day your employer will pay you less money for the same job.
That’s only light commercial Nick,industrial would be 1600 amp ACBs,400mm 4 core SWA,630mm tails,not so easy then

Great video but surprised the site foreman didn’t make a comment on Adam not having a hi-vis. PPE is the one thing we know we have to get right on any commercial work. I was trying to work out if his t-shirt had hi-vis built in or just a colour choice !
i'm more surprised by those ladders. mine need to be inspected and tagged before they let me on site and they wouldn't allow those ones in.

It was a bit selfish, how you spread those glands out, on the board for the FLT supplies.
When another spark comes in the future, to add an additional circuit, all the room has being taken up.
And maybe you should have brought them in from the bottom for the environment that this is being installed in.
I don't mean to be too critical Because I have made these mistakes myself, And when I did my foreman would of let me know using quite a few four letter words.
Easier if it’s thrown it. Hard to make it look like it grew there. Defo a good move as 1000% more appreciated on commercial work as it’s no 95% covered up

PFC = power factor correction nick, used where many inductive loads are present - motors etc. That's a small commercial installation. A nice break from that domestic shit. Try wrestle some >240mm cable. Bet you'll change your mind about commercial then. In industrial myself. Anyways good vid mate.

You should let adam do some proper industrial work,maybe some 400mm swa,chuck in some 25mm metal conduit and 12" trunking ,he'll soon be crying to get back to cushy domestic land.For added entertainment,take away all his power tools.

Wait till you work in a factory, warehouse that's up and running and full of equipment. And one full of old equipment /switchgear. Or even better a steelworks that's filthy, bet you would feel different then. Not to mention the cable sizes. The one you said was big is a tiddler. Get working on some 240mm 4c that hard to lift never mind gland and make off into the switchgear.
You also need to change the top of the 3 pH MCB. Spacing of the glands is FAR too far apart. How do the next electrician gland his cables in.
Be it Industrial, commercial or domestic. All have their hard parts to deal with. You have only dipped your toe into industrial stuff
As a recently retired JIB GOLD CARD APPROVED INDUSTRIAL ELECTRICIAN OF 50 YEARS :house bashing is the easy part of our trade both mentally and physically:but your doing a grand job at what you do keep up the good work but I suggest you stick to domestic work lol
Try working in an indoor fish farm, 28°C and 80-90% humidity….
I’ve done domestic work for 17 years, industrial for 3 years and I’m now on my second year working with fish farming. In my view it’s the customer interaction that’s the big difference, the work itself is different but equally stressful and tiresome. Finishing of a 4 core 240al cable is often easier than second fitting an outlet for a dishwasher.
If you can, I think it's always good to do something abit different now and then to freshen things up and also keep you on your toes from boredom sticking in.

Great. Now try keeping an automated industrial factory, all it's process systems, and optimizers running as an industrial maintenance electrician- like I do. Not trying to be a dick, but be humble. I started on (years ago) what we call commercial and industrial construction here in Canada. Did some of what we call residential (domestic, I think) too. That stuff was pretty simple compared to what I do now.

This site is a dream to work in, you're incredibly lucky to be invited in, Great work 👍. Majority i worked in were shit holes. Full of asbestos, leaky roofs, cold conditions or excessively hot, further were operational businesses.(RS Components) who employ some of the most laziest rude staff in Britain. Couldnt wait to get out of the premises.

Sorry mate you are not doing anything special, wonderful clean site, been working on sites all my life and the amount of fittings available when installing electrics in commercial buildings has never been so easy, ie Unistrut plus all concoctions for connecting ,cable trunking and so on. The hard work comes in when testing and commissioning comes into force. I have to say you love the sound of your own voice.
