One of the best bowhunting videos on youtube showcasing the amount of effort it takes to hunt the swamps of WI. Also enjoyed how you walked everyone through the setups and the thought process of every hunt. Great story. Great video. Great buck! Thank you for putting this together!

i encountered a same situation like yours in 2007... i was bow hunting, when i saw a nice 140+ '' buck walking to ward me, but i noticed he had intestines hanging from his belly...the buck bedding about 20 yrd from where i waited 2 hours, but he just didn't present any shot, so i waited 1 more hours, i got tired of waiting for him to die or get up, so i took a sandwich and tossed at it and he stood up and i shot him right through his shoulder ...he couldn't run with both broken shoulder and dropped 20yrds from where i shot him...
i was taking my equipment down and went to the deer, when i noticed an older gentleman with a limped legged was searching for signs of a wounded buck, so i asked, '' are you trailing a 10 pointer with a gut shot, and he said, yes sir... i told him, i saw a big 10 pointer gut hanging from the side of his belly and bedding 20 yrd from me where... i waited 2 hours before i shot him and he's dead over there ''... we went to the deer, i can see his expression that he needed it that deer... i felt bad and asked, '' do you want it, even though i killed it, he said, no you killed it it's yours, but i can see in his eyes he was sad and wanted the deer''.. we talked and found out that's his first deer ever with a bow that's why he gut shot it, so i told him to keep it, cause i shoot plenty of bucks even though i tagged it already...i told him to follow me to the gas station and once i'm done registering it then i'll give it to him...
the best thing was, he really needed some meat for the family, cause he lost his jobs and since then, i always hunted and gave him 90% of my kill..
since my encountered with will, i always donate all my deer killed to him, so he can put food on the table for his family... i love hunting, but i also love to donate all my kill to those unfortunate families, elders that can't go out to hunt..

@@marshalgriep614 trust me, it was really hard to let go that deer.. you don;t come upon a 140'' + buck on public land much, but where i hunt, the county is know for monster deer.. if the gentleman was an ass, i would've kept it, but he was really kool and nice knowing he never shoot a big buck like that, wasn't hard to do, but let him have it , plus i can always huntfor many many years to come, but he was an elderly man, not much strenght, and ability to hunt...
we as hunters should treat and respect each and every hunter out there alike regardless our skin color.. good luck hunting and be safe brothers and sister..

Love your videos and the name Big Buck Serial Killer!!!! Thanks for sharing your wisdom and passion. The ending reminds me of my first case i read in law school, Pierson v. Post. Old case where a hunter was chasing a fox with hounds, and another hunter, knowing the first hunter was in pursuit, killed the fox. The court eventually held that whoever takes dominion over the animal, ie kills it or mortality wounds it, has a claim to it as property. Merely wounding it is not enough to claim it as your property.

Feel ya on the setup. Saturday had a nice buck come running right at me from a bottom. I was on top of a ridge. Before I got on that tree I had looked at one closer to the edge of the ridge and almost went to it. The buck ran to the bottom of the ridge and stopped, where I couldn’t get a shot. Wind was blowing directly that way. I’m sure he winded me. Needless to say if I was in that tree I would have had a wide open shot directly at him. Oh well lol. Hunting

I was a frustrated hunter, then I realized, the way I was hunting was just like everyone else…on small parcels of public in Oklahoma, in my experience, the big boys don’t bed on public. They come onto public after dark and leave their rubs(sporadic rubs). So people set up on those and don’t see anything. Follow the trails, read the tracks, date the ugly chick. Doe and dawn beds were easy to find, but no buck beds in sight. The does would bed on public and upwind on private….the bucks were bedding. I asked myself…what would the beast do. The bucks would scout the hunters walking in, right by the parking lot. Being close to the rut in Oklahoma, the bucks would start to stage in the small tract by the parking lot. Hunters walked in, bucks went out the back door. Testing my theory and scouting in the coming days. Thanks Dan!

Dan, Great video. I found it really interesting and informative the way that you filmed and presented the entire hunt sequence. It really gave a lot of perspective and insight into your decisions, thought processes, and strategies to hunt the area and that particular buck. Great use of aerial views and ground views to show the viewers your points. I hope you continue to do more of the same style of videos - I feel that for many hunters, the thought processes behind the strategies and being able to utilize the sign and terrain effectively is often the most difficult part of hunting mature bucks as opposed to does and younger bucks. By the way, I was surprised to see you touching the rubbed trees with your bare hands and leaning your bow against a nearby tree. Did you shoot those sequences after the hunt, or did you feel that the area was already "contaminated" with ground scent so it no longer mattered? Thanks for the info. I have all of your DVDs also - great resources for those that are interested.

That setup with the seat facing away would've been perfect with a tree saddle. I love facing into the tree a bit. It's easy to slide up to my feet and if I setup my saddle correctly I should get almost 360 degrees of shooting all around the trunk. Only need to be 12 to 15 feet up in some of those scenarios.

Another great Beast video. Congrats on the buck Dan.
The bigger buck in the area, how much do you think he would have scored?

The buck that was supposed to be the giant, I think would of scored in
the 160 range. Not all that much bigger than what I ended up with.

I guess you did end up on that side. So maybe I'm being aggressive when I hunt. Looking at a map as actually scouting an area is a difference

Dan, another great video and excellent info all of us hunters can take from this. But I have to ask why? This almost seems like it goes against everything you preach on here, as far as not over hunting a spot, most of your videos are you hunting a spot only once or twice and your moving on to the next, maybe to return after some time has passed. No disrespect at all, just had to ask! Congrats on another nice Buck!

I think if you watch close Im not sitting the same spots, Im moving around and hunting the deer down. Big bucks do not vacate areas, they stay in the same area. That swamp is 2 miles long and that buck lived in that two mile stretch.
