Shell VPower vs Petro94 Ethanol Test (Winter Blend)

  • Checking the Winter Blend regarding the ethanol content vs. Manufacture claims. Winter blend means (usually) the fuel company adds butane in the mix to help the engine cold starts. By double checking the numbers for the Petro94 Winter blend, I did see 24ml of water in 400ml of fuel, so this represent %6 of ethanol in the Super Clean 94. Which is lower than anticipated, but, falls under Petro Canada claims that the 94 has ethanol up to %10. Maybe the summer will have the %10 so that the RON number increases a little bit. In Canada the average has to be 5% ethanol content, Petro Canada uses 10% in all octanes whereas Shell and others use 10 in 87 octane, 5 in 89 and 0 in 91. If you have a small engine don’t use 10% ethanol in it before storing your equipment for more than 30 days, such as lawnmowers, snowblowers that are seasonal. For cars ethanol is good for decreasing the amount of emissions

I'm not running a high compression engine, just a straight NA 3.8L buick V6, i switched over the coils and plugs to run hotter because i noticed my engine ran a little rich, now i can actually get a full clean burn on 91 from shell and i dropped a full 1.5litre/100km from 10.7 down to 9.2. Im managing 730km out of my tank (and yes it drops down if i use 87 shell it still runs well though i lose about 100km in range). If i put even a splash of petrocan garbage in my car, it runs rough and i jump back up to over 11L/100km

I do all my ethanol mixes with Vpower. Its a more stable fuel vs Petro, but on boost applications, the 94 will give extra power vs the 91

For shell, instend of using ethanol it seems they use straight additives in place of ethanol. Additives they can be obtained cheaper at the same time reduce emissions while passing government regulations.

I hope Quebec ethanol content is same as Ontario. 6% is very nice. I saw somebody that they tested 21% ethanol in Ultra 94 that is more than double the allowed content.

Yes, it seams it varies from province and season. In the summer, it has more E fuel in it. On the same station, I saw %12 in the summer vs. less than %8 in winter. (In Gatineau). Others, reported up to %18 in the West end of Ottawa.

Shell sells v power with zero ethanol because still over 85% of the gas they sell has ethanol anyway. Petro can uses ethanol to achieve 94 octane. Esso and shell have 91 octane gas no ethanol. Chevron in BC and Alberta sells 94 octane gas with zero ethanol.

Sucks that we have no E85 (or E30, E50) available in Canada. I think, maybe on Vancouver Island has one, but, Since Trudeau was elected in 2015, the McEwen only fuel station not far from the Parliament in Ottawa that was selling E85 stop after the 35K in credit tax to the fuel station from the Feds was eliminated. They replace that pump with Diesel!. But, because of an old army connection that currently works at the McEwen storage place in Kemptville, I'm able to get by drums some E99 (actually more E99.99, but for legal reasons, it's sold has a E99. It cost me $1.24 per litters for that pure alcohol. I mix it with Petro94. Because of the limit of my injectors, I'm currently max out at E35. I've also notice, the Ethanol content in the summer of Petro94 is more like E12. Some even reported E16 on the West side of the city. But, you guys in the Pacific, your weather is a lot more stable vs the Eastern Ontario and Quebec.

@@SkylineFinesse is that in a Turbo engine? My friend works for a oil company. He said Petro Canada puts more additives in there gas than any other gas station. Turbos seem to like it but I notced I got like 1/8 of a tank less range in my Bmw with Petro Canada. Try Shell 91 or Shell 93 or CO-OP 91 and then try Petro Canada you will see the gas needle drops quicker. Ethanol is notorious on the HPFP on Turbo cars.

On a trip to montreal though i got over 700km or 5.2l/100km on petro 94, apparently the 94 in montreal is actually 96 because of the additives (this is on their website)
