    hey i was wondering how it is that you get the bird to tilt? my cockatiel adjusts to any movement of the perch to keep himself upright.

    My bird (hahns macaw) was one of 6 birds in his nest. We choose him because at 2 months old he was the only one of the 6 that was calm on his back. He was the oldest of the 6. Over the time since then we have continued to flip and spin him hold him and otherwise touch him as needed so he doesnt care about being held to begin with! But this is a great tutorial for those who dont normally do this!
    Note, we choose him at 2 months old but we took him home at 4 & 1/2 months old. His breeder was kind enough to allow us to come out weekly to get & keep him super tame before we took him home permanently.

      How do I flip my macaw, he’s a big boy, big enough to scare my golden retriever

    • @budgiebreder
      @budgiebreder ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@doggomoredoggo6547 alot of patience!
      Start with a secure hand over their back, then over time tip them to one side closer and closer to onto that secure hand. Mqke sure you secure both wings! And the bird never feels like its going to fall. That will always freak it out.
      Start working with it to allow touch freely above all other training (except recall - thats the most important “trick” any animal should know!)

    How do I train a timid bird? She's so clingy and adorable but she's too scared to learn anything new so idk how to "train" her. I've tried to teach her sthg as simple as wave but she's interested in scritches only

    • @point4939
      @point4939 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Hi, I’m gonna assume you probably don’t need help anymore since it’s been two years, but for anyone else who stumbles across this and has the same problem, here’s my advice:
      It helps to have a designated training spot with limited distractions. The bird will most likely start to associate the spot with learning and focusing, and after a while, will automatically change its mindset whenever it’s training time. This is similar to how it’s recommended that you don’t work on your bed since you associate it with sleeping and will probably start getting tired or not want to work, or to how we have designated schools for learning.
      It could also help to build a consistent schedule of training, i.e. ten minutes every day at 4:00pm. Of course this isn’t always possible due to other responsibilities and the happenings of life, but even simplified versions can help a lot, i.e. roughly once a week in the afternoon. Repetition and consistency are always key.
      The length of each session is also a big contributor. My bird isn’t very timid, but does have a super short attention span and a very defiant personality, so I keep the sessions short and stop once I see he’s getting too distracted.
      As for a timid bird who’s scared of learning tricks, it’s super important to take it really slow to avoid forming or enhancing any anxieties. Learning too much at once can be very overwhelming and nerve-racking, and once your bird has a negative experience, it forms strong opinions and associations which can be really difficult to rectify.
      You should focus on simple tricks and integrate plenty of rewards, from treats to a quick scritch, and, when applicable, constantly reinforce that the bird is doing the right thing, like a *click* in clicker training. Any form of encouragement helps motivate the bird to keep trying. FlockTalk is really good at taking each step slow and emphasising that any progress is an improvement, so definitely follow her advice and be patient; very patient. If the bird isn’t making any progress, change your teaching approach. The bird is probably confused and will promptly give up if they feel they’re getting nowhere.
      Target training is a great simple trick to learn which I and many other people recommend starting with since it’s the basis of many more-complicated tricks and can be adapted and varied very easily to suit the birds comfort level. The location of the target can change almost infinitely to increase or decrease the difficulty, and things like a time limit can be introduced to make it more of a challenge, i.e. if the bird doesn’t reach the target fast enough, the target moves to a new location, making it a game of chase and speed. I’ve made a play gym for my bird which is great for practicing this trick due to the variety of obstacles, paths, and locations to place the target, and I’d definitely recommend anyone else do something similar since it encourages exploration -good for timid birds-, is fantastic intellectual stimulation, provides heaps of entertainment, and can be easily customised and altered for any need.
      If the bird still isn’t learning as fast as you hope, isn’t learning anything at all, can’t do anything more than basic tricks, doesn’t have the mental capacity for learning tricks, etc, then maybe it’s best to lower your expectations and find a way to be proud of your bird no matter what. Some birds don’t learn as well as others and by lowering your expectations, you’ll probably find it easier to teach your bird since any form of improvement -whether it be looking in the right direction or waiting a second longer before turning away- is seen as an accomplishment.
