For the record, the reason steam is so based is that it isn't a publicly traded company, so they're not obligated to sell their souls for infinite growth, provided they're still profitable enough to meet their expenses
They basicly own the market by sheer competator stupidity Epic is the only actual "threat" but they gotta give free games to stay afloat so yeah Steam is just passive income
(If i remember corectly Alex was predicted to not be profitable before release but they went "lol, lmao" )
Keep in mind that Epic is also not publicly traded. It isn't just that Valve is a private company, it's that the company was built and is run by people who actually care about advancing and innovating the PC gaming space.
@@catmaster1595Epic are fucking chink sellouts and they have harmful customer practices.
Gaming companies should be headed by people who cares about games but publicly traded companies usually got businessman CEOs to chase infinite growth NOW at the cost of any future profits

As Gaben is on the brink of death, he will call into his tent Mike Booth, creator of Left 4 Dead. Privately, Gaben will tell Booth that it is his will for him to lead his gaming empire once he dies. Later, Gray Newell will visit his dying father assuming that he will be named CEO. Gaben's love for his firstborn son will tempt him to hand the reigns over to Gray, but his duty to protect the gaming world will outweigh his affection as a father; he will be forced to gently let his son down, and break the news to him that Mike will head the empire of Steam. Betrayed and anguished beyond repair by his father's rejection, Gray will smother Gaben to death, and announce his passing before Mike can be named CEO. Gray will claim this title for himself, and his first act as CEO will be to lock Mike Booth out of his steam account. Booth will be quick to see his fate, however, and rip the files from every game in his steam account, creating an untouchable offline database of all the games he owns, initially escaping his demise. Gray will rest in a false sense of security, believing that Mike has been disgraced and removed far from the public eye, while Mike returns to his two year old stardew valley play through. Upon launching the game, however, he finds that his save files have been lost - all of his progress was saved to the cloud. Devastated, he lies on the pavement outside his house, waiting for death to claim him. While he is asleep, however, a roving gang of teenagers lift him off of the pavement and haul him into the back of their Nissan Bluebird. Driving him to the nearest internet cafe, they force Mike, whom they believe to be a lowly homeless man, to compete in online Counter Strike tournaments while they film and upload his matches to TH-cam. Mike, a seasoned CS veteran, is too downtrodden to boast of his greatness, or even to bother fighting back in the tournament - but when he realizes that his entire team is made up of the homeless and impoverished victims of these teenagers, and his opposition consists of professional E sports athletes, Mike decides to unite the homeless and teach them the strategies that made him a great player, all the while retaining his anonymity. Climbing the ranks of the Counter Strike community, Mike begins to compete in high-profile tournaments in disguise, wearing an MF DOOM mask on tournament stages, and referring to himself as "The Man Who Was Left 4 Dead." As Mike's fame spreads throughout social media, word reaches Gray that a homeless man has begun climbing the ranks of the Counter Strike community. As Valve's popularity rapidly dwindles under his rule, Gray Newell decides to referee one of Mike's matches as a publicity stunt. Mike demolishes his competition, and is approached by Gray on the stage after the event. Gray asks him to remove his mask, and Mike refuses. Gray becomes enraged. Mike removes his mask. Gray is terrified, only now learning that his nemesis, and the true heir to Valve, has returned to the gaming world. Months pass, and Mike has gained legendary status in the world of PC gaming, while Gray has become the object of scorn to many. In a final effort to prove his worthiness, Gray challenges Mike to a 1v1 on Rust, in Modern Warfare 2 (2009), online match, live streamed on twitch. Mike accepts the match. Gray hires men to hack into Mike's wifi and stream Zootopia from several devices while pirating One Piece episodes from sketchy websites to slow down his internet connection. Mike still manages to quick scope Gray several times, without allowing him to even land a single kill. Gray panics, and resorts to noob tubing. Mike runs out of ammo for his sniper. He artfully weaves around Gray's grenades until he runs out of ammo and holes up at the top of the map. Gray begs the referee to reset the match, allowing both players to respawn with ammo. The referee does not even respond. With Gray defenseless, Mike executes him with a melee kill. The crowd roars. Gray is fired, and Mike is offered the position of CEO. He accepts, and recovers his old steam account. Finally at peace, Mike will see his stardew save again.

His fear is not unique. Its something I and many others worry about to. Gabe gets shit for some stuff. But most people are in agreement that he's stemming the tide of bullshit corporate greed, with debatable reasonable morals that most find fair and agreeable (Example: his stance on Piracy. "Piracy, your biggest competition, offers games for free. beat them by providing a better service") . Gabe has a system that is better than all his competition, and still found away to rake in billions. Unless he grooms and picks his replacement. the future of pc gaming after gabe is out, is going to be shit.
Even if he grooms a replacement, all that does is delay the inevitable. Because there's no guarantee his grooming will stick with his replacement and even if it does, what happens when that person is gone? It's inevitable that one day Steam will turn into the same corporate slop service that everything else has become.

It was fun while it lasted. Thanks Gabe
Most of this stuff is Libre licensed (like Proton). You can easily fork it. That makes it effectively immortal.
Furthermore, people like Glorious Eggroll who already maintains a proton fork could take over as the lead maintainer.
And this is why you shouldn't let the game store hold the keys to your collection.
If Gabe dies he's gonna unveil the Gaben AI that will functionally be the immortal God-King of Steam.
What if Gabe goes full Ready Player One mode and sends players on an Easter Egg hunt competition the winner of which becomes the CEO of Valve?
Nah, pc gaming will be fine even without steam. But without steam, companies will suck ass bc they dont have normal pc stores, which will lead to piracy spike. And when and only when someone takes the initiative to make service like steam, pc gaming will function again. This is scenario that already happened. This is scenario of steam.
This is correct. Steam was created as a means to reduce game piracy because before steam it was a pretty big problem. Who knew that if you offered the customer what they want at a decent price with lots of conveniences that they'd stop pirating?

It’s a reasonable fear to have honestly. I’m glad I have other hobbies to fall back on worse comes to worse, but even the car enthusiast scene isn’t what it was 10-15 years ago. Pretty much every aspect of it is worse.
I unironically believe Gabe will be immortal, or at the very least live for another 50 years. I have no concerns of this sort.
It's incredible that this guy hinges everything on one person, almost like Gabe IS steam, then ends it by calling him some random old fat guy, the duality of man
Gabe has steered steam very well, and there’s a great risk of trouble when he’s gone, but it’s not because someone looked to make profit. If they didn’t look to make profit steam would’ve never existed, nor valve, and as even the green text went into, the foolish ways AAA companies are running things loses them money in the long term and often loses them money immediately. If you wanted to be as profitable as possible reliably, you’d either steer steam the way Gabe does, or make minor tweaks to somehow improve customer experiences. At the end of the day, truly successful business (business that earn lots of money) is done such that the customer actually likes giving you money. If everyone hates your product and every online personality derides your company you end up like Ubisoft, whose stocks went down 90% until recently bouncing slightly because it’s going to be purchased by someone else. That, or you could be like blizzard which is failing, was bought by Microsoft and went promenade, and is taking a nosedive towards the ground, or any other AAA studio that’s dying and doing so rather quickly.
Profit motive makes good companies and games, shortsighted greed mixed with sheer stupidity makes bad companies and games.
he plans to become immortal
If Steam fails, we still have GoG. While they don't support Linux the way Steam does, they do promote DRM-free gaming, which means you can keep your games for as long as computers exist.
Gabe hits me as the type of guy to have a successor lined up just incase his plans of immortality doesn’t work
The peasant fears how his king's succession will affect him, will the heir be worthy or will they degenerate to a tyrant, those are the questions they hold. What the peasant doesn't know is that the king is immortal
Just wait for your games to disappear from your library 💀
I look at Valve and it reminds me of how there are legal and moral monopolies present in the world. Particularly companies that provide power or water for your house. But for Valve/Steam it’s all a combination of lack of alternatives, proof of competence, and player acceptance.
Untrue, they would also remove the feature to connect libraries do you can play games that you cant aford and your friend has
The Sons of the God Emperor will crash their Chapters against each other all laying claim to the throne.
This isn't just a fear, it's genuinely what will end up happening.
We have to trust that Gabe knows what he's doing and that he won't allow his legacy to die. I have to believe he has a plan for his successor.
A successor can never be fully trusted though, no matter how well-groomed they are for the position. A cursory look at the history of monarchies will tell you that.
@@Commodore22345 Of course, but I believe that a good friend who shares his vision will still be more than suitable for the job.
So basically Steam if Valve was run by any CEO other than Gabe
I wouldn’t worry too much about this. Unless something truly boneheaded happens, I think anyone that takes over will understand what makes steam great and profitable. Keep in mind that sometimes lowering pricing and increasing the quality of the experience makes more money. With that being said, whoever takes over hopefully understands that. Heck, the successor could even make it better somehow
It will be a very slow transition. You wont realize the water is boiling until it's too late
I'm sure Gabe has planned for this.
He's the last remaining original employee so I'm sure he knows who to trust with the company
My guy has lost weight. He's an averagely built old guy now. I'm so proud of him.

Companies that aren't cease to exist

All I hope is that he has named a trustworthy successor
You know what? Now I got that fear too. I... should probably activate and get a pirate group to stick up after that worse case scenario come up.

I’ve been saying this, everyone is on the strongest copium thinking it’s not gonna happen.
