Deserted and Abandoned - Ghost Town or Mining Camp?

  • This was a Silver and Lead Mine that was worked up until the 1930s, now deserted and abandoned. You tend to wonder what ended up happening to those that worked and lived here. Sometimes they have more exciting stories than the dilapidated ruins they have left behind. Which is the case with the owner of this mine.
Quite the entrepreneur, he sold this mine, started an airport which then became Nellis Air Force Base, and then operated a successful business with his wife for travellers between L.A. and Vegas for many years.

“Gly”: I enjoyed that site when I was out there. You’re right, that shaft with the concrete needs a grate over it. Laura and I will be roping into the shaft with the headframe you found this coming April or May. I think the collar collapsed about 100 feet down but there’s only one way to find out. Stay tuned!

I'm getting to be an old guy now, but I remember the "romance" of roaming around the old mining camps in the '60's as a kid. I remember a mine I went through out in Death Valley that had comic strips in it (dated from the '30's) from pack rats. But I've since worked most of the oilfields in North America hauling crude or fuel or water... living in all sorts of hellish conditions away from my family. I think most of the people who populated these camps and ghost towns, even with the once-beautiful homes, really just wanted and dreamed of a Molly Brown experience where they could strike it rich, move to a big, proper town (San Francisco? Denver?) and leave the dusty, lonely landscapes behind. Heaven knows I'll never be lighting cigars with $100 bills!! 😂 You guys stay safe out there!

Seems I recall a visit out there with another creator. The numbers on the side of those core sample boxes are feet. 165-173=feet. The dates and assay values would have been kept in the office. Usually marked "Top Secret". Obviously you don't want the public to know including workers. Them beefy tables is for slabbing and eye balling them. Usually the assay furnace would be in close proximity to assay them. Pretty cool place. Nice job.😊

Interesting explore! I think Sarah has been to this site too! I saw Gly's comments on it. Every explorer has a little different point of view. Core libraries are more about mapping the rocks than anything else. I'm sure they were glad anytime they brought up ore in the core, but it was more about locating the ore body. If you knew the ore was located between rocks E and G ... and you brough up rock C or D ... then you knew you weren't quite there yet, but if you brought up rock G and didn't find any ore then you have reached the end of the formation. Today they bore holes in the rock and use gamma ray loggers to identify the rocks using bore holes at different angles depending on the job. The oil, natural gas, and coal operations use it a lot. I know they also use it in the Canadian diamond mines.

@@PinInTheAtlas Back in the late 1980s my geology professor wrote a computer program that we all had to use that was a lot like a gold mining SIM City (slightly before Sim City was a thing). We'd have to bore holes to find the gold to sink a shaft into, but you had limited funds to do your drilling to map out the ore and if you spent too much you didn't have enough money to sink a shaft and recover enough gold to continue mapping and mining. There's a funny Australian movie, "Rikky and Pete" where the heroine retags the drill cores to pull one over on the sexist mine boss.
