    For that much, to still be standing. That was really good stone work. I doubt anyone could even do that kind of work today.

    Ha ha! All around the watchtower the fires burned. Then the hooligans came and burned the tower. Now it sits, a memory of the past. Just a stones throw from waters that could last. Great job to both of you. The editing, the narrative, and the story all clicked. Well done! 😊 The best part of my day. Thanks for sharing. Stay cool, lov yas. 😘

    Those structures must have been lovely, as shown in pics from the early days. How sad what became of it, after the fires... and that the owner died so soon, after it was completed, in the accident. It's in a beautiful location, and sits up high. Thank you, Andrea and Steven, for filling in the details, as you always do so well. I think there is a melancholy feeling about the place. The weather suited it so beautifully, I thought.

    Another interesting site and video! I actually commented earlier, but those comments seemed to have disappeared yet again. The fire is thought to of started as a result of one of the fireplaces throwing out sparks during the time it was a hotel. I suspect the "Castle" is just a marketing upgrade to get people to come see it ... though there are a lot of places called castle in the states. Being a fan of "Dances with Wolves" ... ha ha tonka sounds like it should be laughing buffalo! :-) We use to take geology students to Missouri every fall. The area we would visit was around Johnson Shut-ins State Park. It's part of a volcanic caldera and it gave the students a chance to see volcanic rocks in place. The last time I was there ... Missouri had a record cold spell and snowfall. I ended up sleeping in my insulated coveralls in my sleeping bag to keep warm. Around midnight ... there was a lot of noise ... people, hammering and such. I did not want to exit my warm cocoon to see what was going on, but the next morning a city of expedition tents had been built around me. It appears we were there the same time as the Boy Scouts Fall Camporee. We had our rocks described and we left that morning giving the scouts the winter wonderland!

    What a beautiful area. Those darn hooligans, they always destroy places that have so much history. I bet when they grew up, they realized what they destroyed and wish they could take it back. Hopefully they raised their children right and told them don't destroy or vandalize history. Thank you for sharing and God Bless you and your family. There is the question---why? In 1979 vandals smashed the irreplaceable Fresnel lens in the Sandy Point Shoal lighthouse with a baseball bat. How do you quantify damage that cannot be repaired or replaced? The 1942 fire destroyed the house but was an accident; to purposely set fire to the water tower is a crime that defies reason. Well, you are as far East as I have seen you--does this mean you may see some sights on the East Coast?

    • @PinInTheAtlas
      @PinInTheAtlas  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We can never understand why either.
