Route 66's Hidden Ghost Town

  • Join us as we explore one of Route 66's ghost towns hidden in plain site.
    Rock Island, which later became Glenrio, began its life around 1901-1903 as a railroad siding for the Rock Island Railroad. Officially named Glenrio in 1908, the town thrived as more motorists arrived. By the 1930s, it boasted a paved two-lane road, petrol stations, a restaurant, and a motel. During the 1950s road-widening project, a Texaco Station was added, along with the Brownlee Diner and Little Juarez Cafe.
    Glenrio's unique location on the Texas-New Mexico border led to an interesting setup: petrol stations were on the Texas side (due to cheaper gas prices), while the bar and motel were on the New Mexico side. However, the construction of Interstate 40 in 1975 bypassed the town, leading to its decline. Residents moved out, the post office closed, and Glenrio became a ghost town.
    Despite its abandonment, Glenrio's charm and eerie ambiance have made it a popular filming location. It was featured in the 1940 film "The Grapes of Wrath," and the Glenrio Motel inspired Radiator Springs in Disney's "Cars." Additionally, the opening scene of the 2018 film "Daylight's End" was filmed here.

    Having driven every conceivable passable (not private/closed) bit of Route 66 a few times, it's great to see how much or little things have changed. There are many old, old cemeteries in that area, too. Thanks for this little journey!

    Great photography and video! Seems like I've see the gas station and old Pontiac in a lot of TH-cam videos. I do like knowing if a site was used in a movie. It makes it a little more interesting! It does make me wonder if the the bar and motel were on the New Mexico side of the line ... how could they be the first and last hotel in Texas? 🙂

    • @PinInTheAtlas
      @PinInTheAtlas  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      As you cross from NM into TX on Route 66 it was the first hotel you came to. When leaving TX on Route 66 it was the last hotel before crossing into NM.

    Trying to imagine the gas station in its prime - the style reminded me of a TV series I loved to watch when I was in my teens - "Highway Patrol." Dan Matthews alias Broderick Crawford always gave motoring advice - 'reckless driving doesn't determine who's right, only who's left.'

      I forget the Game Show, maybe " Wordmatch ". I don't remember. But the answer Frank Gorshin said was, in his best Broderick Crawford voice, " somebody asked the score, I said, 10-4, 10-4 ! " Frank Gorshin was a Voice Impersonator, and the Original Riddler in the TV series Batman.

    That row of rooms @ 8:00 seems like they were intentionally stripped of wood, like why would the entire roof structure and every window jam and door casement be gone totally, and not a pile of debris left like it collapsed or slowly dissolved .. very odd

    Howdy Pin. Over 20 years ago since I drove to Texas. Got to Corpus Christi. They have a cool Aircraft Carrier there. Forget the name, but " Blue Ghost ", comes to mind. If you get to the Alamo, there was a poor soul there with the same last name as mine. Spelled with an s, instead of a z.
