Ghost Town Ranch - Historic Stage Coach Stop

  • When you think of the “Old West,” images of Cowboys, stagecoaches, gunfights and rowdy saloons immediately fill your mind. But, for a good reason, that’s how it always seems to be portrayed.
There were also ranchers, who still to this day work mighty hard for their income. This particular ranch was a stagecoach stop in 1865, and due to its popularity, a new larger station was built in 1880.
What makes this particular ranch so special was, that a post office was established in 1888.
With the railroads becoming a more favourable way to travel, the stagecoaches dwindled, and this ranch, like so many others, was of little use. Finally deserted, it now lies forlorn and is a Ghost Town Ranch.

Some people are saying the station wagon is a Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser. It also could be a Ford Station Wagon too. Ford also did swing open wagon door too! Sometimes either on the firewall or drivers door frame you might find a vendors tag with information. Somebody was still going up their at least to the 1980's. Finding the Chevrolet up there. Another good video.

Judging by the metal fence posts in one barn, I'd say it was still actively used at least into the 60s or 70s. Just hard to say. I pounded my fair share of them into the ground, when I was a teenager in the 70s! Quite an extensive old place, that a lot of labor went into. Thank you, again, for an awesome tour of the past!

So when the stage coach arrived couldn’t you imagine how exhausted the horses would be.So they would put the exhaust horses in the stable to feed and water them and check them out and hook fresh horses up to the coach. And they would have chickens maybe pigs and cows to feed the tired travelers. And bunk houses for the travelers to rest. I think the length of your videos are just fine. You guys are getting better with every video. Thank you for sharing with us.

Being a former stage stop, often they would have fresh horses to swap with the Stage Coaches.

    • @PinInTheAtlas
      @PinInTheAtlas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes, definitely William. This place did appear to have an old corral and stable, plus people stayed here overnight. We've read different things about the length of time the stage horses ran before they were swapped. Some sites say 10 miles, others 12. Some even 25. I guess it would depend on how tough the trails were.

  • @mobiltec

My guess on the duplex building is that it is kitchen on the right and dining room on the left. Not only did the ranch hands have to eat but also the travelers from the stage. The funny shaped tank, being that it is on the ground and revited together was most likely a fuel tank to run the generator in later years being that you saw electrical in the building. The electricity also most likely ran a pump from the well in later years. I think the station wagon may have been a Vista Cruiser like the one seen in the TV show "That 70s Show"... Judging from the sun window in the roof. In the final building the door is called a Dutch Door. Stable door in England I suppose. And I bet that building was the post office. Thus the dutch door to hand out mail. The board you thought was a ladder was for shelving. The rest of the structure for the shelving is just gone. People have been dismantling wood structures for fires all these years. So much is missing. Thanks for the tour. Another great video guys.

Is it suppose to be rake not rack and rakes not racks. Now I know why a flunked spelling in the 3rd grade. And from Wikipedia; "a mechanically more complicated rake was developed, known as the side delivery rake. This usually had a gear-driven or chain-driven reel mounted roughly at a 45-degree angle to the windrow, so the hay was gathered and pushed to one side of the rake as it moved across the field. A side delivery rake could be pulled longitudinally along the windrow by horses or a tractor, eliminating the laborious and inefficient process of raising, lowering, and back-and-forth raking required by a dump rake. This allowed for the continuous spiraling windrows of a classic mid-20th-century farm hayfield. Later versions of the side delivery rake used a more severe transverse angle and a higher frame system, but the basic principles of operation were the same."

Former California city boy, now some 30 yrs in Utah when not trucking... I think the door that appears to be a 2nd story door out to nothingness was for when the snow piled up so high it would be the only way in or out above the snow. Also, the bins in the "barn" looked like chicken nests, so as to have fresh eggs since chickens love to nest (raised my share as a lad). Also, alot of stage stops were built of stone and had stalls and corrals for horses as well as other farm animals. Not sure where you were here, but I've seen similar (though not as extensive) a stage stop in Wyoming just south of I-80. I don't know if you are trying to keep locations obscured but it might be nice to show the roads in to these places. Some TH-camrs make the journey the show, others, the destination. Me? I enjoy a bit of both. Thanks to my dad, I got the bug back in the '60's before people started doing such things en mass out in Death Valley and Yosemite. Many thanks for the videos. Keep on truckin'!

Wow!! First to comment? Yee-Haa!!! That means i can really run my mouth:) Station wagon, Looks like an old Vista Cruiser. Oldsmobile? That big crane/hoist truck bottom thingy:) was a truck bed. The grate that the pole (pole truck) was sitting on would have been behind the cab. Thie grate protected the driver. That pole would have been leaning the opposite way during operation. Like a tow truck. If you tried to pick up to much for the cable to handle and it broke , the pole would come flying back at the cab, Didn't take but once or twice before you'd have the pole on your head. Not good. Really cool looking place. Up by that station wagon was a truck bed turned on its side; If you notice it's laying across a wash, modern day flood control. Believe the rock building was before the wood. It almost looks like the wooden building was built in the old rock corral. Think it had two rooms because one would have been used as a kitchen/ storage area, the other wold have had tables to sit at while they changed their teams. Big building i believe you were right, A store/hardware/post office, might have even had a small bar for the locals. More then likely the stone building got burned down by the Injuns:) Sounds cool. Then they built the new building in the corral. Yeah!!! Then they'd have a place to hunker down behind the stone walls and shoot back; And then, maybe my imagination runs wild sometimes. Yee-Haa!!! Great video.

Love it Richard! We searched for some old photos to kind of help us picture it, but came up empty handed. Your explanations always sound right on point to us. This was such a cool find in every aspect, to the amount left, the condition of it all and the lush grassland and trees made it seem like a paradise in the desert!

@@PinInTheAtlas As you can tell, i really got excited about it. We call them boom trucks by the way. That boom would extend toward the rear and would be held up by two other poles, like a tri-pod. When they first started using them they were he men and often tried to pick up something that was much to heavy for the cable. It would snap and the boom would fly toward the cab often with fatal results. Hence the rack behind the cab. Sure would have been cool to be in an actual indian fight. Yee-Haa!!! Y'all be cool. Catch ya on the next; "Pin in the Atlas".

@@richardbeee I am picking up what you're laying down there Richard, LOL... loved it! The boom as you call it, is what we used on an alfalfa ranch... it was called a "cherry picker" as I knew it. They would lift hay bales up to 30' in the air, one or two guys on the boom truck and one to catch on top of the stack. One day my dad was working on the boom with a guy and the cable got away from him, it almost took the guys head off. This place was wonderful to see and does get the imagination going for sure!!! Loved the video!

Once again, the driver door or door jamb would have a data plate with that station wagon's specifications. That particular car would like have glued on lable stickers that cannot hold up to heat.
However, at bottom driver side corner of the windshield would be an aluminum VIN tag. You could google the VIN tag to get information about the car.
Trucks as late as 1972 and even later had wood for a cargo area. And if the VIN tags or other information markings, or the cab is destroyed to a point you cannot find VIN information you have to rely on your expert knowledge of vehicles. Good luck with that one.
