The album, The Wall came out in 1979. The movie, The Wall came out in 1982. So I wouldn't call the the album a soundtrack to the movie at least not what you would typically think of as a soundtrack. I've always thought of the movie as a visual representation of the album.

I was going through the "English" school system when this song was released and it struck a major chord - pun intended - with me and many of my contempories - some of the teachers really were like that and used to beat us with rulers and canes if we deviated in any way from the "norm" and asked questioned them and they derived a perverse pleasure from it. I lost count of how many times I was beaten but if some "teacher" did that to one of my nephews today I'd take a baseball bat to them.
I got caned once, and once only (and I fully deserved it too). Never happened again, and I didn't tell my parents because I would have gotten twice as bad from them!
Great reaction. Pink Floyd is timeless, the times may have changed but the song is just as relevant today...beware of those trying to put the walls around you.
Class of '85 here. At the time all I heard was "teacher , leave them kids alone". As an adult, I see the deeper meaning. Still appreciate the excellent music!
Fun fact: the kids who sang on this came from Islington Green School, London, years later both my sons went there and were fellow pupils with Paloma Faith..also definitely worth checking out...
This video is an out take from the Pink Floyd Movie The Wall ,That came from there album The Wall. The album and movie in there entirety tell a story. You should see the entire movie and listen to the entire album. The poem that the teacher reads back to the student are Lyrics from the song Money..
I use to roller skate to this at the rink. Music is the time machine. You should also check out music by Queen and LED Zeppelin. Monsters of rock along with Pink Floyd.
I had a t-shirt made for my husband that said, "How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat". He's Uruguayan, so he wore it whenever he was at the parrilla ( BBQ )
While some were disciplined in the schools, not all were. However, if you got in trouble at school, not only could you get a paddling from school, but you'd get one when you got home too. It seems harsh, but they also didn't have fights all the time in schools back then. Kids weren't bringing in guns, or having sex in school. The parents worked WITH the teacher, not against them. The kids were also taught respect for their elders, and for others. Of course there were always some teachers who went overboard, and some students who rebelled. Overall though, society didn't have as many problems. There was a time that everyone watched everyone's kids. It wasn't out of the ordinary for a neighbor to spank you, if you got out of line, then you'd also get it at home too. Times have definitely changed.
My school kids still had fights ( or "scraps" as we used to call them,) I used to smack my kids, but then I realised I was doing it out of frustration, anger not just to teach them they've been naughty. Then realised it was wrong to do that and got better results banning them from TV, games, etc. They learnt manners and good behavior without me laying another hand on them again and they grew up beautiful, smart, funny, respectful people that I am so proud of. 💞💖😁😄 it seems wrong now that I ever smacked them in the first place, weird as when I was young that was normal for parents and teachers to do, now it just seems so weird now. strange times back then.
It's cute sally kilby and it worked on your kids but there are times where you just need to deliver a bit of pain to teach some if not most kids, I was whacked in the ass when I was a kid and I really don't like that kind of pain so yeah it taught me some shit, I guess I could respect what you have done for your kids and it worked out for ya, but nowadays kids are weak and out of control. Here in Australia we can't whack our kids (not that I have any) and a few or so years ago, some new-age fruitcake said that disciplining the kids is bad and detrimental to their health, mentally and whatnot, so because of the 1% of f**kwit parents that beat their kids like a dog we can't do it anymore, just like we can't properly defend ourselves or others otherwise we get mark on our record depending on the severity because some of the 1% of people who beat the shit out of someone and sometimes killed someone in the name of "self defence" so all those martial arts lessons were practically a waste of time besides doing some moves and sparing. Sorry for ranting but we need old-school punishment back into this society it's becoming a shitshow and congrats on having good kids and I hope that they stay that way and have good day :).
British kids went to boarding schools. If you got into a bad one with bullies, sexual abuse, obnoxious teachers, there wasn't really anybody to turn to. Millions of British kids were scarred for life, unable to show emotion or weakness.
The entire album should be listened to from start to finish in its entirety. Close your eyes and listen to it. Love your channel. Remember don't try and live in the past. It will bring you to a stand still.
i'm 63, so i lived in those times. i hated school, but when i got caned for the first time i was amazed at just how much it didn't hurt very much. so i lost the fear of it. the music was well worth it, too. the best ever. i'm so glad i lived in that time. you need to listen to 'dark side of the moon'. it's a concept album which needs to be listened to in one go, as each track runs into the next. PF composed whole albums, not just a series of songs put together. also, you need to see them live. they're actually better live. the live show called PULSE is my favourite. check it out
We're from a small town in Texas. In 2000 while our son was in the High School marching band the band director allowed them to perform this song as the half-time presentation!
If you haven't watched The Wall, Google it, read what it's about, then watch the movie. You won't regret it. Thank you again for another amazing reaction x
I was born in 1950 and this is pretty much true especially at the grammar school in the 1960s. I know my older brothers had it the same and they were 5 years older then me. In the grammar school the teachers pulled ears, hair, slaps, slippers, canes and even brush stales. being humiliated was an every day occurence. I just stopped going. My parents never understood why but then when my dad was a kid in the 1920s it was just the same. Wonderful song and film.
@@michaeljenkinson7099 We've probably gone too far the other way today, but that does sound awful. I went to school in the 70s and 80s and didn't really have any of that. I did see a PE coach slap one kid in Jr High once, but he thought the kid (who was a trouble maker) had deliberately beaned him in the head with a dodge ball. We didn't make a big deal out of these things back then. Today that guy would have been fired and the school sued.
@NorwegianBlue I have spent my life believing that corporal punishment of any sort at school was wrong. To me it was a form of bullying. The quality of the teacher was what determined how they acted. As an example, in my 1st year we had a physics teacher call Lenny Morris, he was old yet he kept 45 11/12yo boys attention for an hour at a time without ever raising his voice, brilliant teacher. the next year we had a welsh guy, Nev Jones, he belittled people, beat them with slippers and never really got control of the class. I think it should be said that 1963 wasnt that long after the war and a lot of teachers had returned with problems, some handled it well and some didnt. I think had all the teachers been as good as Lenny Morris then my life would have been very different. Like my older brothers going to senior school was when I realised how poor we were. School uniforms dont level the playing field, they make it worse, you can see the cheap clothes easily and identify the poorer kids easily too.
"The WALL" The Movie includes "When The Tigers Broke Free" which explains how Roger Waters/PINK lost his father (Fletcher) which shaped his Music and entire life to this day (Perhaps it was too personal to include on the album...?)
There was a line in 1960s Doctor Who about humans being controlled by aliens (Cybermen I think) and the Doctor retorts than mankind would be just like a string of sausages. (no individuality). I wonder if that inspired this part of the scene?
Oh honey....the wall....the movie get a copy you will love it it's the ultimate pink experience! This is the all time best group ever....every album is its own story and every album is a masterpiece that is timeless.......♡
Hell yea man!!! Love Pink Floyd. You should check out Pink Floyd- Learning To Fly, Money. Ted Nugent- Fred Bear!!!!! Rush- Limelight. Allman Brothers- Ramblin Man, Midnight Rider. Joe Walsh- Rocky Mountain Way. Just a few good ones for you to check out sometime!!
As a teen this was one of my favourite albums. Spent hours sitting in front of large speakers totally stoned while skipping school. Ah the memories lol
I grew up during the 60's and 70's. Love watching your reactions. You seem like a real lover of good music and open minded enough to appreciate the oldies. Keep on listening.
This is about Rodger Waters growing up without hits father after the war... its from the movie the wall .. they show the scenes from the sounds and talking parts in the back ground of the album version.
I'm 52 and when I was in school they were allowed to paddle, most of the time it was like 3 licks but it got our attention, then we would get it whooped again when we got home, we didnt have school shootings, knives or bombs, we would fight and get our butts beat or we'd win but we would walk away and be over it
Discipline is the cause in the long run why kid's do what they do because adult's are scared to do it because they want to be friend's, you can't be a friend and a parent, now everyone is scared to make them mad cause they might do something
@@toddhodges4405 what has that to do with one country on earth prevalent in school and other mass shootings? Are you suggesting only one country doesn't parent/discipline correctly anymore and that's why it has these shootings?
All I'm sayin is when kid's got their butt's whooped when they did wrong we didnt have all this stuff happening, not sayin kids were angels back then but it wasnt an every day thing, that's just facts
@@toddhodges4405 Perhaps but consider how many of those kids who got that ass whooping both at home and at school grew up and today are policy makers in office which now detrimentally affect the lives of millions of people today so I ask you, what does your statement really mean?
Yes in the olden days, teachers had the authority to beat up on students. A local celebrity in my home town said things were grim in the Catholic all--girl public school she attended in the 1970s.
This song came out in 1980 before I went to high school in Scotland. It was a massive hit and was in the charts for weeks. It had it's own animated video. I remember vividly in on part, hammers took the shape of soldiers and marched side by side. It was very strange but I'll always love and remember this song. I remember us all singing along to it and pointing at the teachers at the end of term disco. We thought we were 12 year old rebels lol. Corporal punishment was still used at the time. I remember one teacher demonstrating the use of the strap. She lay a piece of chalk on her desk and hit it with the leather strap. It broke and flew in different directions across the classroom. The demonstration worked though because after seeing that, she never had to use it all year.
This was the part of the movie where the rock star named Pink was flashing back to his childhood. He was ridiculed for the poetry that ultimately became his ticket to fame and fortune. I'm sure this would be relatable to many hip hop stars.
1970. My freshman year in college .(catholic medwest collage) Was the first year women were ALLOWED to wear pants SUITs (only suits) on campus. Pink Floyd was a reflection of the changing times.
70s kid from Australia here. They gave the cane in primary school and in high school (80s) the science teacher would throw the chalk board eraser at your head if you so much as sneezed in his class. I was "quiet and conscientious and a pleasure to have in the class", a total straight A student. We used to get yelled at and hit at home, I'm talking open hands, ruler, wooden spoon, and even the strap. School was a haven from that if you flew under the radar. Which is why I detest bullies (unfortunately my high school experience) as you never know what that young person has to endure in life. Thank God for the amazing music back then... we escaped into it for sure, literally life-saving 🙃 I can't believe how bad it was and probably is still in some schools around the world - State condoned sadism.
In the late 1960's the elementary school I attended in the USA, if you didn't do your homework my math teacher would outstretch your hands, palms up, while she beat your palms with a wooden ruler. In those days this was commonplace and was just part of the everyday school experience (unless you did your homework). I recall getting spanked by the principle once. He used a thick, elongated wooden paddle that delivered searing pain, which you would get a second time around when you got home after the school called your parents.
I am glad you took back what you said because the 50/60 were a terrible time to live in. Now you have childsright, no child abuse or no childs labor, Back then i heard it from my mother you were as a child an outlaw. no rights, no protection and absolutely no say in anything, even sexual abuse. It was survival back then and authoritees lived above the law. Compare to then, we really live in paradise.
amazing ..The Wall was an awesome movie...just dont blink if you miss something you are completely lost... it's sad in so many ways but at the same thing he has spoken his mind and stood up for others amazing talent
I'm Australian and back in the 80's at my high school the boys got the cane, or six, six hard whips across their hands. Our Vice Principal really enjoyed doing it.
Pink floyd stored their equipment 2 streets away from where I lived ( I didn’t have a clue who they were). The kids in this video were from Islington green school, which was in my street, and where my son went school. It’s was top of the uk charts xmas 1979. Great song.
JB. That was my look to when I first saw this music video as a kid in the 80's. We still had discipline like that till I left high school in 93. I'm from South Africa, now live in England.
When I was in high school me and my best friend blasted this song over the intercom system during second period......we had a lot of fun......yeah, school was pretty much done for the rest of the day because we got most of the students all fired up running out of classrooms, running down hallways and stairs, and right out the nearest door jumping in their cars and cranking up the stereo lighting up a smoke and in no hurry to go back to class so the principal sent everyone home for the rest of the day......my friend and I got called to the principles office the next morning so he could "punish" us for our disruptive unruly behavior and suspended us for 5 days.......guess he thought that would "hurt" or bother us and didn't realize that we would consider it a reward for playing good music that the whole school enjoyed and appreciated so much they were literally moved by it.....all except for a few snotty students the teachers and staff who were supposedly APPALLED by it.....LOL!!! Damn, I sure miss those days
Pink Floyd is pretty awesome! Check out “Set your controls for the heart of the sun” very cool! And THEN blow yourself away with Iron Butterfly’s “In A Gadda da Vida” (In the garden of life) - mind you it goes for seventeen minutes! You will LOVE IT! Just settle in and let it take you. Make sure you get the “best long version” with the cool video graphics! If you like cool organ playing, great bass / guitar and solid male singing with actually a great romantic story line- this is FOR YOU! Note- I am a 65 yr old white gentleman in Northern California wine country and grew up with all the songs you are showing such GREAT APPRECIATION & RESPECT for - THANK YOU! It’s great to see your reaction to White Soul! Yep - we also have our version of SOUL!
Oh yeah. I'm 47, but back in the 80's, in High School, the boys got the 'cane'. Whipped across their hand. Our Vice Principal enjoyed it, did it to a friend of mine once while I was in the sick bay.
As others have already said, this is not a music video as such. It was the video accompanying Pink Floyd's new album (project) called The Wall, which was about how kids slowly build walls around them, to protect themselves from being hurt- by teachers, other kids, life in general, etc. This song, "(Another) Brick In The Wall" is about that first part. English schools in the 60s were like this, very strict, and fairly mean. Many 'walls' were built there. Rest assured, the young guy depicted eventually breaks out of it, and destroys his wall. [Yes, I did a paper on this album when I was in school in 1980]
Bee Snort it's been 30 years for me and they were crazy times I would never recommend it now days to much weird stuff going on. The wall just reminds me of my buddies and old times, I apologize for spurting a memery . Sounds like you got good taste. Check out some concrete blond love their music
Wayne Satter oh I will check them out. I didn’t mean to shame you in any way over that. You had fun times with your friends when you were young and should definitely be able to share those great memories. I’m actually jealous that you got to have fun and let loose without your fear controlling you!❤️❤️
Bee Snort thanks I'm not shamed I just did not want to give rong message to teens if they read this stuff . Hope you enjoy the band send message and let me know I'll take recommendations also
The "poem" that the teacher read is from another Pink Floyd song called "money" and he is daydreaming about burning the school down, and writing it down, and they are calling his parents at the end of it. When I was a senior we picked this song for our senior song, when the programs came and they read it, they made us sit and glue all of the pages together to "punish" us, kind of made our point if you ask me, and yes I got plenty whippings while I went to school.
In the 70's would have the ruler over the hands, what we called the slipper, was like rubber sole a few times over the backside just for things like not having a pen or school tie. For fighting or insulting a teacher was six of the best with the cane. We had one teacher who was a real bastard, he gave us 200 lines instead of the ruler or slipper, we all preferred them to lines and he knew it.
I'm sure quite a few people have already told you to watch the movie The Wall,so the "videos" for this album will make total sense to you,and I completely agree. The film is an absolute masterpiece of cinema history, and also(of course)one of the most amazing albums ever.(to fans of Pink Floyd at least.)I'd love to get your opinion on that as well.😊
This is a clip from the movie. You have got to find a full version of that song that is not from the movie because you are missing a setter guitar solo, and then some.
I was 14 when this song hit the radio. You have no idea how huge this song was. Every kid in school was talking about it. But yes, teachers could beat your ass back then. They would call your parents who would then beat your ass when you got home. In my grade school the principal had a paddle, it was painted white and written in red was "White Lightning". It had lightning bolts drawn on it too in red. LOL
I remember my best friend being taken to the hall way for a spanken. That shit was real and they made you walk in front of the class and tell what they did wrong.. This was in 1979. I think they continued it into about 1982?!
In England and here is theses united states. Corporal punishment was permitted and even sanction by the parents back in the day. I grew up in a catholic school and corporal punishment was the norm. Another brick in the wall to my meaning is that children are used as money by the state run school system, and private institutions to fund their bureaucracies. Great reaction JBL! Love your site...
Being beaten was accepted. NEVER try to think outside the box. Born in the '50s, this has been a very "interesting" journey. Thank you folks for understanding and helping to make things better..
Again, loved your choice. 👍🏼 When you witness the level of disrespect the youth of today appear to have towards their elders - it does makes you wonder, whether a little bit of corporal punishment during their schooldays, might have made them behave otherwise. It didn’t seem to do me and most of my generation (60’s/70’s) too much harm.
The movie, "The Wall", was developed from the album. The movie is from the '80s. The music is older. The story behind both is about a man falling into madness.
Watch the concert of The Wall. Is basically a giant musical that came long before the movie and as the songs go on they build the wall. Ugh it’s awesome!!! Lol Shine on You Crazy Diamond is probably my favourite Floyd song. Haunting and beautiful and sad. Very underrated in my opinion
You can also try "Learning to Fly", "The Division Bell" and "Dogs of War" from Pink Floyd as well. I definitely felt bad for you at the outset when you said you were already feeling the song. I literally laughed darkly and said, "Buckle up!" This album/movie was one of the things that sorta got me through high school. Their music was always amazing. When Roger Waters left, it was a huge blow, but they recovered sorta kinda decently.
Ok, this will take awhile. The album, The Wall, is a story album. The whole thing together, start to finish, tells a story. In thus case, the background and eventual mental breakdown of one of the band members, Syd Barrett. There's a movie that was made based on the album, as well, and definitely worth watching. Part of this story goes back to WWII, England was being bombed. Children were separated from parents, sent to live with strangers away from the cities, in an attempt to keep them safe. Many of those children never saw their parents again. Food was rationed. Children's ability to learn was affected by malnourishment. This was when meals at school first came about. The meat was probably not very good quality, probably tough. There were "puddings", usually a steamed, fruit filled dough. The kids loved the pudding, but often didn't like the meat. But they needed it, and the vegetables, for the nutrition. That was where that bit came from, "If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding. How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?" Some teachers had mean streaks and used this as another way to torment the kids. The original intent was to make sure the kids ate what they needed to be healthy. But there are plenty of stories about sadistic schoolmasters. Some British boarding schools were particularly harsh, at least from what I've gathered from books and movies. Another thing mentioned in the album is a singer by the name of Vera Lynn. She was famous for a song called "We'll Meet Again", sung to troops about to leave for war. Anyway, I strongly recommend listening to the whole album, seeing the movie, and maybe watching some movies and drama series about living in England during the war. A lot of things will become clearer, the more you learn about that period of history. Pink Floyd is great, and The Wall is a masterpiece.
You got to watch the whole movie. There is a story behind the song, and you already get it based on how you explained this particular song. Also, Roger Waters performance of "The Wall Live in Berlin". Many famous people participated. It wasn't the band of Pink Floyd, but it was the song writer and the lead singer of Pink Floyd and ex-band member that put on the show.
The "poem" the teacher is reading, is actually part of the lyrics of the album "Dark Side of the Moon"

Amen to that
@@LadyIarConnacht I know, never went to one thank god but have heard of so many who have, these poor kids how on earth did they manage?
That poem is the lyrics to one of their songs on a previous album
Money from DSOTM.
Excellent choice my friend. You have good 👍taste in music.
If you haven't watched The Wall, Google it, read what it's about, then watch the movie. You won't regret it.
Thank you again for another amazing reaction x
The album/movie is based upon the lead singer's life. He was born in 1943, so this part would have been set in his early childhood in the 1950s.
You should see the Pink Floyd movie, “The Wall.” It’s a mind trip.
"The WALL" The Movie includes "When The Tigers Broke Free" which explains how Roger Waters/PINK lost his father (Fletcher) which shaped his Music and entire life to this day (Perhaps it was too personal to include on the album...?)
I will never forget when they played this song at the Berlin Wall 1990. What a great show!
Your reaction to the "meat grinder", lol. LOVE your channel!!😁
There was a line in 1960s Doctor Who about humans being controlled by aliens (Cybermen I think) and the Doctor retorts than mankind would be just like a string of sausages. (no individuality). I wonder if that inspired this part of the scene?
Hey JB! There is actually a movie called Pink Floyd’s The Wall! This was from the movie!
The Song with the best Guitar Solo EVER!
Time is dived into 4 parts. Past, present, future, and Floyd.........subbed cause you finally found us. Welcome.

Pink Floyd. Listen to the whole album it’s amazing!
This is about Rodger Waters growing up without hits father after the war... its from the movie the wall .. they show the scenes from the sounds and talking parts in the back ground of the album version.
This came out when I was in high school. It became our anthem.
I'm 52 and when I was in school they were allowed to paddle, most of the time it was like 3 licks but it got our attention, then we would get it whooped again when we got home, we didnt have school shootings, knives or bombs, we would fight and get our butts beat or we'd win but we would walk away and be over it
We had the cane and such too but not any longer. We still have never had any school shootings. The two things are not related.
I’ve got my cat chillin up here listening to Floyd with us 😂😂😂 love Pink Floyd
Im 55 love this music
Pink Floyd is a great band. Love them! Love ya kiddo! ❤️🙏
Compare to then, we really live in paradise.
thanks so much for not talking over it incessantly, as some do..bravo
We need more Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin
amazing ..The Wall was an awesome movie...just dont blink if you miss something you are completely lost... it's sad in so many ways but at the same thing he has spoken his mind and stood up for others amazing talent
just hear the tune and feel the words...thumbs up JB from an old white UK man.
Great song.
you gotta see the movie "the wall" to really get this great reaction though!
JB. That was my look to when I first saw this music video as a kid in the 80's. We still had discipline like that till I left high school in 93. I'm from South Africa, now live in England.
My favourite track from my favourite album of all time
Love these guys
You listened to two songs, the first one is called the happiest days of our lives
It's all good to enjoy this..back in the day, I wore out 2 Brick In The Wall cassette tapes!!!
Keep in mind that Roger Waters wrote about what things were like when he was a kid, which was post-war England in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
5:10 yes and back in the days especially in the United kingdom they were very strict to their students compared to how it used to be in the U.S
Once a Floyd fan, always a Floyd fan.
I got a drumstick from their drummer at one of their concerts. Started collecting them, have about 80-85 of them now.
LOL Great reaction! It's okay to enjoy it a little too much! Sweet react!
[Yes, I did a paper on this album when I was in school in 1980]
You must watch the movie sometime! You will love it!
Bee Snort best on acid
Oh I wish I wasn’t such a chicken about that. I’ve always wanted to try that once before I die!!! But I’m scared of seeing scary things lol
Hope you enjoy the band send message and let me know I'll take recommendations also
Another blast from the past my friend. Takes me back to the rollerskating rink. Lol this and abracadabra.
Go buy the whole Movie. The Wall. So worth it.
In the 70's would have the ruler over the hands, what we called the slipper, was like rubber sole a few times over the backside just for things like not having a pen or school tie. For fighting or insulting a teacher was six of the best with the cane. We had one teacher who was a real bastard, he gave us 200 lines instead of the ruler or slipper, we all preferred them to lines and he knew it.
the movie was incredible. Pink floys wrote the wall in 1981, but fashioned the story after their youth in the late 1940's mid fifties
Naw. They were still doing it beyond 1982. Trust me. I know. Hahaha
I just love your reactions...
I first saw this movie in a theater at a midnight screening. it was an incredible experience!
Pink floyd they are trippy yessss😀👍
Man, I loved your response
The album The Wall was written years before the movie. The movie was literally made to fit the album.
ONE OF MY FAVORITE FLOYD SONGS!!!!!
Its from my days the 70s also listen to some moody blue and the doors
