When you start getting old is when you realize a lot of mistakes you've made in your life that you didn't realize. I believe that is what he was singing about.
There are people who leave you due to natural causes over time, but also those you push away by your mistakes. I think Cash is singing about both, but the latter carry more regret.
I'm a grown man, but I tear up every single time I listen to this song and watch the videoclip. The sorrow in his voice. It pierces the memories of my mistakes. But at the same time comforts me. Letting me know it's alright. I'm not the only one.
You have nothing to apologize for no matter how many times I listen to that song I always cry and I have been in a Johnny Cash fan ever since I have been 5 years old and I am 28 now so I just wanted to kind of try to give you an understanding of how emotionally powerful that song is and once again you have nothing to apologize for and I just want to say thank you for doing what you do
You nailed it.. I love NIN's original version, but Johnny just takes it to a completely different level..it grabs my heart and squeezes it. Granted my hubby has MS and had a stroke. You never know what life will throw at you. All I know for sure is life is precious, life is short, and take nothing for granted. I've learned this lesson the hard way.
What I find funny about considering him country is that I love Johnny Cash (every song), but do not really like country music at all... well at least the country music of today. I know..it is strange to say, but I really cannot stand country music. There are 2 songs within the last decade of country that I like. The question is... is Johnny really country or is country today something else?? I do not know. Lol
@@christineharding2011 country today is no longer country. It's 90's pop being sung by talentless pretty boys in tight jeans, and cowboy hats. Johnny Cash, and the rest of the greats are spinning in their graves.
Johnny Cash was a legend in country music. He was of the most prolific song writers in the industry. He was so deep in his thinking and way ahead of his time. The reverend Billy Graham once committed that Johnny Cash was the greatest bible scholar alive. He went through so much in his life. Prison, drugs, alcohol and never wavered on his belief in Jesus. He showed that even the best Christians could and would stumble. He stood for social justice at a time when the word ment nothing. That's why he wore black. A great man in my opinion.
“I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down, livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town, I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime, but is there because he's a victim of the times."
BEST.COVER.EVER. Also, one of the most emotional performances ever. Johnny Cash was a legend, and he lived a hard life. He came from nothing... This was his goodbye to us... There aren't many things to be proud of when you live in Arkansas, but I'm damn proud to say he came from here. He took this song and made it his to the point that the original doesn't even matter to most people anymore...
Some people comment on how thin Cash's voice was at this point in his life, compared to the power of his youth. Maybe, but it suits this song perfectly. You can hear the pain and grief in every word.
I feel you bro. This song is so powerful and real that it literally 'hurts'. He left us with a powerful message and warning in the end. May Johnny Cash RIP with his beloved June forever. ⚘💜⚘✌🏼
It makes me proud that folks from all walks of life feel overwhelmed by this video. Just makes me realize we have so much more in common than we even think. Don't want to sound hippy-ish, but being touched by this song is a universal symbol that we are all more similar in our humanity than we are different in our cultural upbringings.
Cash recorded dozens of songs after this. He said he needed to work, especially after he lost June. But this is the one that puts the punctuation to the end of his life like no other.
Well dang - dunno if it helps any - but as an Olde Guy on the internets, this video hit me just as hard, just the same, as it's hit you. This video is..a masterpiece. And I think it should be listened to, along with Reznor's original take. They're like bookends, of anguish at the beginning and anguish at the end. Truly gutwrenching. Thanks so much for sharing a clearly heartfelt reaction, with all of us randos out here.
I truly feel that Johnny Cash did an amazing job with this song. The fact that he was in his later years when he sang this song just gave it more emotion. Try - Gods Gonna Cut You Down. Edit : If you knew the story of Johnny Cash, this would feel just that much more deep. He was a true outlaw in his day. Along with Hank Williams Jr., Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson & many more.
Tonia Rose Cash said he wished he had done stuff like this earlier in his career, I do too, him covering this when his voice had the power it used to have would have been awesome, I'm a metal head and think this cover is better than NIN original.
R.I.P. Johnny Cash! He was one of the greats. He went through so much but still came so far! A great story teller. He will be missed by millions for a very long time. #truelegend
johnny cash is a legend in the country music industry mr cash and his music will never be forgotten my stepdad played his music when i was young and i still listen to his music today we got a chance to see his grave and it was so quiet there you could hear him singing we put flowers and a signed album he gave to my dad we will never forget mr cash but one day we will all see each other again after we die in heaven rest in peace mr cash
He died 7 months after this was filmed, Cash died on September 12, 2003, and almost 4 months after his wife June Carter Cash, she died on May 15, 2003. This is a cover of Nine inch Nails song but after hearing Cash's version Trent Razor (original singer) said it was no longer his song, that it was Cash's.
Wow..it was only 4 months after her death that he died... jeez I don't know why I thought 4 yrs. Thanks for the info, I was so wrong about that. Thanks again!
You hit the nail on the head, it is a dying man's song. It was his swansong having lived an emotionally deep and rich (I don't mean financially) life. June Carter (who is in the video), Johnny's soulmate and some time touring partner, died 3 months after filming this video. Johnny died 4 months later. I've seen the Hurt video probably 50+ times and I've cried at every one of those viewings. It's incredibly poignant and raw; beautiful, but incredibly sad. Very moving. A simple song, though with a lifetime of backstory. RIP June & Johnny. Your legacy is monumental and will never be forgotten.
Give me my family, my faith and love for my woman. You can have the rest of stuff. Most of us dont learn what life is about until the end, then its too late.
Your reaction says a lot, true music must elicit a reaction, it must come from the soul, its tears up the script of expectation, its gives you pause, people listen to music but sometimes they don't feel the words, it's just noise, but you are keeping it real,
This song brings me to tears every time Johnny Cash was and still is an icon in the music business. There will never be another man in black. May he REST IN PEACE
“I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down, livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town, I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime, but is there because he's a victim of the times."
The fact that his wife, June Cash, died before Johnny, very shortly after the making of this video, makes her appearance in the video all the more powerful. She appears behind him almost like a ghostly apparition. He can't see her but she gazes lovingly and sadly at him in the midst of his anguish.
I love that song...hell I love all of Johnnys songs, but that one is great. Finding his dad that named him sue! Hilarious and uplifting at the same time.
Oh I think Johnny wanted all of us to be sad but not from or about this song. Johnny always wore black because he was always in mourning for the hurt of this world. When I read that it just blew me away, he didn't wear black to seem like a bad boy, he wore it to seem like a sad boy.
Garden Crusade - Then why the post? What, did you feel god needed reminding in Johnny Cash's case? Who exactly are you to feel you can tell god what to do?
OriginalTharios how do you know. The devil tricked you. Your soul has a place. Better repent buddy. Stupidity isn’t going to save you. God is for real. Don’t be scared of the truth.
Powerful! I felt that to the core. Anyone who has had regret and loss in their life couldn't help but relate to this. He was one of the greatest artists of our time. RIP😢
G W ... EVERYONE who has ever lived has let Jesus down, but it's okay, that's why he came and died. You should read the story of Paul (yes, THE St Paul) in the Bible in the book of Acts (all of Acts is a great read). He hated Jesus so much and killed so many Christians that he later called himself the chief of all sinners. But Jesus loved him anyway and turned his life around and taught him how to love. Peace to you, GW!
Haven't we all.. it is never to late, to turn things around and ask for forgiveness. We all suck or do things that suck sometimes, we are only human. Be well.
No one that realizes they did wrong let Jesus down...as even Jesus gave in to temptation near the end. The point of life is to learn and grow, to overcome and to seek redemption. You cannot seek redemption without understanding the wrongs you have done and thus must actually commit them.
In all my years of being a fan of music and videos (I remember MTV from the beginning in 1981. I was just going into high school). This Hurt video is the only one I ever teared up at. And still do.
It was his last recording, and you are right . I think Mr. Cash knew this was the end and this song was a glimpse into his life and his final thoughts.
I grew up listening to Johnny Cash. He was my mom's favorite, and she played him all the time. In 1970, when I was in 7th grade, my parents and me took a trip to Nashville. The high point in a week of high points was sitting in the audience for a taping of The Johnny Cash Show. Liza Minnelli, Arlo Gutherie, Ray Charles and Johnny Cash. Best vacation I've ever been on. This song hits me hard every time I see/hear it. A true masterpiece.
Sometimes when a song is sung by the perfect singer at just the right time in their life it becomes truly powerful, and this is definitely one of those moments. It was always a beautifully written song with wonderful words and a wonderful melody, but here you can FEEL every single word that Johnny sings and it hits hard because it's sung with total sincerity by a God fearing, but flawed man, reflecting on his life with real pain, and probably eaten up by a lot of regrets. Add in all of the visual imagery of the video and it is heartbreaking. It brings a lot of people to tears when they hear it for the first time.
Like all of us, Johnny Cash was a flawed person, but he was such a good person. Check out Folsom Prison Blues, where unlike so many others who speak about Jesus Cash actually cares about prisoners. His music may not be your style, but he is such a cool cat he is def worth the listen to.
“I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down, livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town, I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime, but is there because he's a victim of the times."
Who can take a nine inch nails song and make it better? Mr Cash. He can. Grew up on the highwaymen and this track is fire! Check out Cash’s I Hung My Head.
And this is why art is so important, it moves us and brings us together. Johnny knew his life was running down, that he was soon to lose June, and for all his accomplishments & successes, there was nothing he could do. He turned Trent Reznor's personal song about addiction, into a painfully, beautifully poignant statement on the cycle of life we all must follow. No shame in being moved by great art...
Yo hun!!! You should totally get into some David Bowie!!! His actually death song Lazarus... totally and absolute LEDGEND!!! But this one could start you off!!! “Hurt” is a cover from NIN, but I love Cash’s much more!!! But I love the Pink Floyd, so ya gotta start with some Bowie!!! 💞
Jennifer Zahnow - Johnny Cash is a legend. You could play this song on the radio on just about any radio station and you’d see people jamming out to it. Pink Floyd is ass like wtf nobody likes them anymore at the end of his song he says “You can’t have any pudding til you eat your meat!” Me and my dad make fun of it all the time 😂. WARNING DO NOT LISTEN TO PINK FLOYD YOU WILL GET BRAIN TUMORS
Jennifer Z sorry, screw Bowie, and Floyd..both legends, but neither could outshine Cash on their best songs and Cash on his worst. Waters,Gilmore, better than Johnny? Seek professional help, lol

Thank you so much for sharing your reaction to this song. I knew this song for years before Johnny Cash recorded it, and it reminds me of friends I've lost. I've known the song so long that I don't feel the depth of the emotion in it anymore, but you helped me remember how much it used to mean to me, and in turn, how much I miss my friends. Thank you again.
the pain and sadness communicated song is incredible, it will ALWAYS be one of the greatest musical pieces ever. It makes you feel the pain of the artist in a way that indescribably beautiful, its a perfect example of what great art is.
I have loved this song for many years. Still cry every time I hear it. Knowing his battles in life and that he died not long after this and not long after losing his wife.. so full of emotion. He did this song justice 💛
That is why Johnny Cash is the G.O.A.T. He crosses all barriers and generations. My son who is a 20 yr old metal head and has no interest in country music will tell you CASH is the greatest of all time. I was kinda like you first time i heard this song and video i was frozen and speechless for bout 15 min.
it sucks getting old your body breaks down your looks fade away the one thing I can honestly say your always young at heart!! a rich blessing to all who read this!!!!!!
Sorry to comment again. The scene where June is gazing at him from the staircase while the lyric "what have I become my sweetest friend? everyone I know goes away in the end" BREAKS MY HEART knowing that June died 3 months after shooting video then Johnny 7 months after her...ok...now Im tearing up AGAIN...lol
Your touching silence and inability to come up with the right words to say speaks volumes. Thank you for your great critique of this song and the incredible man who sang it.
No need for apologies good sir and from an old man to a young man I will tell you a great life lesson. As a man, young or old, there is no reason to not cry when moved. I have cried to this song more than once and I just cried again, not from the song but from watching you listen to it. It is powerful and moving and it is just fine to be moved to tears.
Don’t apologize for showing emotion. Young kids coming up need to know a man can cry.
Amen. Being in touch with our feelings is the only way to make it thru the crap today. You hold it all in you will burst.
This is a song that can never be prepared for. Same impact every time. Thank you...

Beautiful legend. Johnny Cash is the greatest country singer of all time hands down!
Bee Snort great for sure but not the greatest
Tony Wilkins just my opinion. But there are so many greats that everyone has their favorites! 😁 who’s your all time fav?
What I find funny about considering him country is that I love Johnny Cash (every song), but do not really like country music at all... well at least the country music of today. I know..it is strange to say, but I really cannot stand country music. There are 2 songs within the last decade of country that I like. The question is... is Johnny really country or is country today something else?? I do not know. Lol
@@christineharding2011 country today is no longer country. It's 90's pop being sung by talentless pretty boys in tight jeans, and cowboy hats. Johnny Cash, and the rest of the greats are spinning in their graves.
King George
Johnny Cash was a legend in country music. He was of the most prolific song writers in the industry. He was so deep in his thinking and way ahead of his time. The reverend Billy Graham once committed that Johnny Cash was the greatest bible scholar alive. He went through so much in his life. Prison, drugs, alcohol and never wavered on his belief in Jesus. He showed that even the best Christians could and would stumble. He stood for social justice at a time when the word ment nothing. That's why he wore black. A great man in my opinion.
Just FYI-Johnny Cash was never in prison-common misconception. He spent the night in jail once. That's it.
“I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down, livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town, I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime, but is there because he's a victim of the times."
Just like Colin Kaepernick; at a time when social justice means nothing.
Misty Michele When Trent Reznor first heard this he said “This is no longer my song.” It was not a cover. It was a takeover. RIP JC
I grew up in Mississippi County Arkansas down the road from where he grew up in Dyess

Some people comment on how thin Cash's voice was at this point in his life, compared to the power of his youth. Maybe, but it suits this song perfectly. You can hear the pain and grief in every word.
Everyone who does a reaction to this beautiful piece has the same reaction, Speechless and Tears. Thank You my Friend and Be Well!!!!
It was his last recording I do believe. And that's exactly what this song. His dying song.
It was also a tribute to his late wife June. He passed away a few months after her.
no his very last recorded song is a duet with his daughter Rosanne cash called 'September When it Comes'
th-cam.com/video/J2WilM6ljUg/w-d-xo.html
Mandy Atterbury my friends were surprised that he lived as long as he did , after June died.
The way that he closes the piano at the end, as if he knows it is the last time ever.
His later years? More like his last few months.
Tonia Rose Cash said he wished he had done stuff like this earlier in his career, I do too, him covering this when his voice had the power it used to have would have been awesome, I'm a metal head and think this cover is better than NIN original.
Gods gonna cut you down is my third favorite song by johnny
Johnny cash is a country legend he will be missed
@@christineharding2011 almost 4 months exactly, she was the 15th, he was the 12th
that means she pretty much died not long after she appeared in the video with him...
@@MGTV1 3 months after the video
WizardPandora June passed on my birthday...I always say a toast to her
You hit the nail on the head, it is a dying man's song.
Johnny Cash..the man in black ..I grew up listening to this man..my favorite..RIP...CASH 😭🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Loved your reaction, beautiful song so powerful when you see him sing it.
This Song has been covered by so many bands, but nothing like Johnny Cash's Version, EVER🙏💞
great react. Very sincere.
Johnny Cash was a legend. I’m glad that we get to hear his music to this day. What a powerful song.
this song causes me a beautiful pain. if there is such a thing
Russians call this sweet melencholy "тоска" (taska).
The beauty and clarity of sadness.
It's bad enough listening to this song trying not to cry. I have never been able to watch it without sobbing.
He is known as The Man In Black.
fishshooter24 He should react to that song. Man In Black. That song goes deep into my bones.
Real men cry for good freinds and family but we still move on . God made us strong in this earth . Life is sad
Thanks, man! This song gets me every time, video or audio. I like all kindsa music, mainly rock, heavy shit or rap, but Johnny is for everyone.
Johnny Cash would not want you to be sad. Do a reaction to his most famous song (a happy one).... "A Boy Named Sue" by Johnny Cash
I was gonna request that 😂😂😂😂😂
I love that song...hell I love all of Johnnys songs, but that one is great. Finding his dad that named him sue! Hilarious and uplifting at the same time.
What about Folsom prison
One Piece at a Time is another great one.
Oh I think Johnny wanted all of us to be sad but not from or about this song. Johnny always wore black because he was always in mourning for the hurt of this world. When I read that it just blew me away, he didn't wear black to seem like a bad boy, he wore it to seem like a sad boy.
I bawl like a baby watching that/It's so REAL/ Your reaction was also. Beautiful!
Brother I can remember the first time I listened to Johnny cash own this song. Nin is unbelievable and I love the original but Johnny owned it.
Thats what Trent said too! :)
Johnny had a timeless voice. If you don't cry listening to this you don't have a heart.
God bless Johnny Cash. He was a devout Christian.
I think that any decent god should bless everyone, devout or not.
He does!
Garden Crusade - Then why the post? What, did you feel god needed reminding in Johnny Cash's case? Who exactly are you to feel you can tell god what to do?
Sam M don’t blame him for your wrong doings? Correct yourself and ask for forgiveness. Follow The Lord.
RIP😢
I let Jesus down too. If I could start again i'd do a lot differently.
We all have sinned man
@Dick Fageroni Yes He is and I pray that you seek Him!
In all my years of being a fan of music and videos (I remember MTV from the beginning in 1981. I was just going into high school). This Hurt video is the only one I ever teared up at. And still do.
great, honest, soulful reaction. well done
One of the most emotional performances ever. J. B. once again, YOU NAILED THIS ONE.
Great reaction, man! I love how this reaction had no frills, cut to the point and we got your opinion and your reaction without over explaining.
This man was very strong in his beliefs and it's great to see that you understand what this song is saying.
Sometimes being without words is a perfect reaction!
I know, it's heartbreaking song. Johnny Cash was real. No wonder he is loved by so many.
A true masterpiece.
my favorite Cash song/video
“I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down, livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town, I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime, but is there because he's a victim of the times."
he spent his life entertaining as a singer, songwriter, actor, producer , and yet at the end the hallmark of a TRUE artist, he can still make us cry
Watch the Movie walk the line for the Jonny Cash story
Thank you, I never would have seen this beautiful song. I have listened to Johnny Cash most of my life. I never saw this side of him. Thank you.
Ironically he died not too long after he released that song
Jim Foxx That’s not irony, he knew he was dying when he recorded it.
You let rock music do what it does best, grab you by the emotions and take you on a journey. No need to apologize.
David Bowie is good tho
Jennifer Z sorry, screw Bowie, and Floyd..both legends, but neither could outshine Cash on their best songs and Cash on his worst. Waters,Gilmore, better than Johnny? Seek professional help, lol
Everyone has their opinion... hope, someday, the sun will shine bright enough on ya, so that you can state yours without insult to others.
Those images were scenes from his life. I loved your reaction. It was my reaction as well.
just to give you a heads up you are going to cry
Thanks! I've seen 3 reactions to this song this week. I've cried each time. And all 3 reactions have confirmed and justified the power behind it. Absolutely incredible song by an incredible musician, lyricist, and person. Thanks again.
Do eye balls sweat lol
Tears are salty and wet, so...yeah? LOL
That is exactly what it is. He hurt a lot of people throughout his life, and he had a lot of regrets.
Baby, its about drug addiction.Loved your reaction.Beautiful song.
I love Johnny Cash...the feeling put forth in that song....if that dont move you...your not alive !!!!
Love your reaction to this.
Such a great sad song.
Dont let your life pass you buy, because it will.
Beautiful reaction man. Love the genuine emotion you showed!
