Sting said: "I think the song is very, very sinister and ugly and people have actually misinterpreted it as being a gentle little love song, when it's quite the opposite."
He insists it is about the obsession with a lost lover, and the jealousy and surveillance that follow.

    •  6 ปีที่แล้ว +28

If you watch the video to this song, then you can see by the look on Sting's face that he's not being dear and tender regarding who he's singing about. He looks disaffected, jilted and angry about the loss of the person he loves who has spurned him. There's a few tender sounding moments, but generally there's a feeling of menace in his words.

When this song came out I remember really listening to the words and thinking it was kinda creepy. I couldn't understand when people would say that it sounded sweet because he loved her so much. Found out since then that I was right.

#1 hit for 8 weeks back in 1983 from their #1 album Synchronicity which was the last studio album they made. Of course, bass player and lead singer Sting has had a long solo career and he's acted in movies too. No one thought they would ever reunite after parting ways in 1986. That's why it was a big deal when they suddenly got back together for a tour in 2007. They did a world tour and put out a live album but now they haven't been together since 2008.

Bassist singer Sting himself has stated that it is about obsessive jealousy, but also that it can be understood as a pure romance. In an interview for the CD box "Message In A Box" the band members stated that the inner turmoil within the band was at its worse around this time and that they almost lost the song for not getting the feel to play it. The guitar part arranged by Andy Summers was what saved it. Also they said that the double entendre of the lyrics gave it the power and edge needed.

I am happy though when they hear the original versions and like/love the originals.

    Great reactions. I'm loving these!
Several years ago i saw an American rapper/hip hop artist (sorry, but i can't remember his name right now) on tv talking about listening to the radio through his headphones on the way to school. He was talking about the first time he heard Running Up that Hill by Kate Bush. It blew him away because it was so different to anything else he had heard up to that point. He loved it then, and still loves it today.
I thought you might like to take a listen to it yourself, when you have time.

P.S: Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic is also a good one by The Police.

The Police are a band formed in the late 70s. Two of the members are British, one, their drummer, American. While they all wrote songs for the band, their principal songwriter is their lead singer/bass player, Sting. They had big hits around the world, this being one of them. One of my favorite bands of the 80s, I'm a big fan. By the way, Sting appeared onstage with Diddy and did his sampled hit live on some awards show, you might find it here on TH-cam.

Sting sang backing vocals for Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits on "Money For Nothing". Mark even gave him co-song writing credit on the song because Sting came up with the "I want my MTV" line. If you listen to that part closely, you can tell that it is the same tune as "Don't Stand So Close To Me" by The Police, which is another great song.

A lot of people have completely the wrong idea about this song, viewing it as a sentimental love song. If you actually listen to the lyrics, you soon realise that it's 'anything but. It's about jealousy, control and unhealthy obsession. It could even be about stalking.

@@CDO1113 Don't water it down with other Bruce Hornsby songs! If we're gonna get this guy to react we need to join forces, and the answer is "The Way It Is".

Night driving music. Brings back memories as a kid for me too. I liked P Diddy's version when it came out. Was cute seeing you sing with it.

correct P Diddy/Faith Evans used this for the Biggie tribute. Just so you know this song is about and obsessive, stalker. But the music is lovely so I think people overlook the meaning.

You might be interested in looking up the live version of "Every Breath I Take" w/ P. Diddy, Faith Evans & Sting (lead singer of The police) - it was an amazing tribute performance, I loved both versions so seeing them all perform it together was unreal.

For any guitarists out there, I am sure you can appreciate how insanely difficult this is to play. It sounds like such a simple riff but its ridiculously difficult to play correctly

Dude when you said your grandma... Sorry to bring the mood down, but when my grandma was dying in a nursing home, I remember holding her hand and I was tearing up and we had a little radio next to her bed so she could listen to music. This song started playing and I was overwhelmed with emotion and meaning. Anyways that's my story time done with.. Great reaction man
EDIT: Every time I hear this song I cry

It was and is a superb track from Synchronicity (1983), but listen to the lyrics: 'you belong to me how my poor heart aches' and 'every move you make every breath you take I'll be watching you'. Sting was originally a teacher from NE England . his 1982 first marriage breakup was acrimonious, thus the venom in the words and quite vicious, relentless beat throughout! The video was hugely famous at the time and the song and video was awarded multiple times; Grammy Award 1984 Best Pop Performance, 1984 MTV Best Music Video, Best Cinematography Award etc, etc.
