In 2008-10ish or something they introduced the evolution of combat to runescape making the combat alot more like modern mmos thus was the Release of Runescape 3. Many Players hated this change as it took away what made the game unique and alot of players quit. A mod at jagex ( around 2012-2013) found an old server from 2007 and pitched the idea to create a seperate game based on the old runescape 2 graphics and combat system that everyone knew and loved and this was the start of Old school Runescape. Classic 2d runescape cannot be played snymore by the genersl public there are still ways bit very few people have access. Thats a general summary, hope it was comprehensive

@@topjest9365 in case you haven't played Halo, or the minigame inside OSRS called Barbarian assualt: in Halo there's a parasitic evil alien race called the Flood, that turns people into zombies. one of the zombie forms is a massive ball of flesh walking on 2 legs - their only way of attacking is walking up to you and explode in Barbarian Assualt, there are also enemies called Penance runners who look like a big ball of flesh with 2 legs, except they also have an eye in the middle
