I am a devotee of Victor Bailey's bass tone, and I think he was a soulful bassist who took the instrument very seriously. I loved the tone of Victor Bailey's red Jazz Bass on the Procession and Domino Theory albums.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!!........Saw this Weather Report tour among many others throughout the 70's & 80's.....Oh My God!!!!! ......What Great virtuosos!!!!!!......We'll Never see the likes of Weather Report again!!!!!!.......What a very special time in My life!!!!!........God Bless W.P.!!!!!!!
Saw this show in 1983 on the campus of UNLV, Las Vegas, NV....Victor Bailey came out with a Ken Smith custom birdseye maple bass that was absolutely beautiful. Great show, great band, great times for a young musician. Those days are long gone.
chad- i was at this show, as well. ninth row, dead center. artemus hamm hall. one of the finest venues in the west and just the best place to see this music. peak live music experience for me.
This tune is incredible. Just listen to the melody - it sounds super easy...but isn’t, and they play it in unison. And the way Bailey plays just one or two notes here and there - sounds so bad ass. And the build-up to the crescendo...man.
Saw them in New York Twice in 1985. This stune is just like a big and endless train coming and slowly gaining full power. Vistor Bailey passed to the astrol world today, stay with God Victor, keep the music going magic in the higher realms of the cosmos.
Love this song. I’ve already voiced my opinion on it today but this live version is beyond description. I guess it’s Weather Report and great memories day.
I saw them in Manchester UK around May/June '83. At that time, I was unfamiliar with their latest output [and no Jaco!]. I later got the Procession album and loved it. Their new bassist was outstanding and brilliant on the record, but his sound didn't come over very well live as I remember it. I felt for him, as the [Victorian] hall wasn't designed for loud amplification.
It takes me there...I watched a show feet away from Omar during this...there's where he keeps the beat going with a steady but explosive almost erratic beat I was gone...
The closest other band I can compare Weather Report to, as far as strength in musicality and compositions, is the Duke Ellington Orchestra in their heyday. But in a more modern era. And in my opinion, that speaks volumes.
It processed in a very complex way and its alterations are mindblowing. Musicianship was on way beyond the usual metrics and mainstream path. Too bad they cancelled the concert in Berlin the same year.
Jaco Pastorius left WR in 1982--he had bi-polar disorder and also, was at odds with Zawinul over the band's direction. What follows is from Wikipedia: "Pastorius developed a self-destructive habit of provoking bar fights and allowing himself to be beaten up. After sneaking onstage at a Carlos Santana concert on September 11, 1987 and being ejected from the premises, he made his way to the Midnight Bottle Club in Wilton Manors, Florida. After reportedly kicking in a glass door, having been refused entrance to the club, he was in a violent confrontation with Luc Havan, the club's manager who was a martial arts expert. Pastorius was hospitalized for multiple facial fractures and injuries to his right eye and left arm, and fell into a coma. There were encouraging signs that he would come out of the coma and recover, but they soon faded. A brain hemorrhage a few days later led to brain death. He was taken off life support and died on September 21, 1987 at the age of 35 at Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale."

i remember 'havona' was a stand out that night.
I just studied this song. It is ridiculous. This band was on a completely new level.
Purchased this album back in 1983, still have it today and sounds just as nice....classic
Only a great talent could replace god Jaco. And Victor Bailey is one of the greatest bass players in history!
What a cool groove, not easy

An absolute Masterpiece, I agree

RIP…Wayne Shorter
Love his look right and left after
his takeoff at 2:22

Both centuries old, way ahead of it's time and timeless!
The one and only time I had a chance to see Weather Report was on this tour! I loved it!
This is off one of my fav WR albums - so great!
A eternal Masterpiece
I saw WR on this tour. First time seeing Omar - as soon as his butt hit the seat, all 4 limbs were a flurry.

Where is Jaco?

@@rampart6557tx for sharing - tragic!
Haha did Omar hit himself in the face at 3:52?
No, that’s Jose Rossy. Omar is on the kit.
interesting lineup ,, shorter and zowbeedo cook
Shorter is awesome,,,Omar is awesome. Who is the other drummer? Obviously, Jaco is not the bass player.
Victor Bailey
Jose Rossy percussion
So
This is great. I think Victor Bailey was even better than Jacob Pastorious. A minority view I'm sure.
on this tune, he truly makes you wonder. this song is a bass player master class.
it's not a challenge... they are both great
Both are great but Jaco was real genius and so unique
Jaco invented this style of bass playing, not Victor. Of course here Victor plays as good as Jaco and I like him a lot but we have to be fair.
FORMIDABLE
